Does fashion matter?

Have you ever had a date show up and their entire outfit was inappropriate  or maybe even bizarre?  I think it seems like a silly thing to “deduct” points on when you are checking somebody out.  Does fashion really matter that much, though?

I remember talking to a guy who said he didn’t call for a second date because the woman showed up to the first date looking too conservative.  He said she may as well have worn a “nun habit” considering how little skin she was showing.

What do you think fashion and style says about our personalities and image on the dating scene?

Would you dump someone because you didn’t like the way they dressed?

Is it ever a good idea to give wardrobe  “suggestions” to people you are dating?  What if you were in a relationship, do you think it’s ok to change your significant others’ clothing or style?

When you see people out and about, is it their “style” that catches your eye before their looks?

Happy Friday!

As always there are two sides of the story, I believe there’s a reason he made a reference to “nun clothing”.

She may have said/done something to project that image.

Dreams – I’ll admit that while I have several very nice fitting suits, I don’t own any tailor made suits. Every time I price one, it’s about 2k. I had sports coat priced, and it was $900 alone. I can’t afford the stuff I really like. lol

I’m only saying if it’s a thing a man can comfortably do just once, do it. Not implying you’re fashion lacking if it’s not in the budget. Heck I can’t afford $2K outfits. Didn’t you see my RL for $25.00? LOL I see plenty that still look good, tailor suited or not. No harm if you don’t have one.

Jo @ 10:26 So you are ok with the dude in the shirt with the puffy chest plate???

The mens wharehouse is a great place for a man to go and purchase a suit… name brands, a variety of styles and on site taloring can get a little costly but that is relative.

ABC…Black and Brown only??? What about Blue or Gray??? I am good with conservative, but DAMN….

Dan – Simplicity in the work/daily walking around. But I do believe in dressing for the occasion. Khaki’s at the movies wouldn’t seem weird to me.

@PK I hope you keep it, I love that movie and “Under the Cherry Moon” as well.

For the most part I do simple things that set me aside from other as it relates to fashion. I mean these are things most folks should do, but they are a lost art. My leather heels for work get polished professionally, I send my clothes to the cleaners and I buy things to properly fit. I take a lot of pride in my look and I get a lot of compliments…I just think regardless of your budget you can be neat, clean and in order.

Dreams – When I said tailor-made I meant tailor-made. My reference to the stockbroker buy unfinished suites was to ABC’s post that you can buy suites that way and take to a tailor for the alterations. I was agreeing. That was his way and he always looked damper.

Black and GRAY only for suits, never a brown suit. Brown is bad; navy blue maybe, but navy works better in a blazer and contrasting pants, which should only be gray or khaki. Only get items that go with everything else you have. It’s a lot easier to deal with, and it’s not like a chick, who’ll want to wear something different to change their mood.

I confess to a cream/tan sports coat that comes out sometimes in the spring, it’s a very light weight. I have the same coat in navy, it gets a lot more wear. I’d not wear a tan suit, though. Black or gray just plain looks better. It’s a matter of taste, I suppose.

On topic,

Black and Gray suits should be staple in a man’s closet. White button down are a given however, a blue shirt breaks the monotony of just wearing white it just needs to be appropriate for the suit. I own a pink and lavender (or lilac) dress shirts that look good with gray dress pants, add a matching tie and you are set.

Isn’t it in the man law handbook that if a man is wearing skinny jeans, his man card is automatically suspended for a year, no review?

As for abc’s comment, I don’t see anything wrong with suits in different colors other than black or gray (no circus colors though), nor is there anything wrong with different colored shirts other than white (I can’t do the pink). I also don’t think that designer jeans means a man is gay. They’re not my cup of tea though. Hell, I haven’t bought any name brand clothes in years.

Double D’s There are lots of nice off-the-rack suits. I’m partial to Brooks Brothers, Hickey Freeman, and Hart Schaffner & Marx. I like the classics.

Yeah we all been there. That’s cuz chics got a whole industry designed to hide accentuate their features. Girdles, push-up bras, tight jeans, weave/wigs, press-on nails… That’s why the chick in sweats that Dan was talking about does the trick for us. It lets us see the real them.

I actually prefer men in a black suit if it’s a tuxedo. Otherwise I like a softer black, a charcoal grey suit. And a navy suit with a faint pinstripe, not pimp stripe, is classic as well.

I remember going to the exes house one evening. We were staying in so I had on some windpants, my Cal sweatshirt and pulled my hair back. I made the decision at the last minute to wear my glasses instead of my contacts. When I showed up, he told me I had never looked so sexy. That was nice.

As for the make-up unless you have a chic that has an airbrush machine and a MAC make up artist on staff you should be able to tell how she looks…features don’t change with basic make up.

Also I am big on basic stuff anybody can put on their $300 jeans and “strut” around, but I have seen folks looking really nice with poor oral care aka yellow teeth. If you are drinking coffee, tea, red wine and smoking you should make sure you see your dentist on time each year.

That’s kind of the idea, though. Let the tie be your individual statement, if you feel like you have to make one. Only wearing white shirts with a suit gives you a lot of leeway with a tie, too — all your ties will go with all your suits and jackets, if you only get stuff that all goes together.

Actually, Dan, I have one brown suit. I don’t wear it much, though, only if it kind of goes with whatever my girl is wearing.
