Dating: What have you learned

It’s great to be alive and well to see another birthday today! When I was younger I remember being in such a hurry to grow up and brag about my age. Now I pretty much dread it and try to avoid acknowledging how close to 40 I am getting *cough*.

I once wrote about what I would forewarn myself  about if I had a moment to speak with my “younger self”.  When thinking of everything I learned in my 20s about dating, sex, and relationships, what could I say? If you take all the pain and heartache away from our experiences, we probably would not be the same people.  What would you say to your younger self?

You know they say that we are the sum of all our experiences. I suppose that is true in many ways, but what lessons can we take from it all?

I have been writing here for 5 years and I have learned a great deal about love, relationships, and men from the dialogue we have here!  What have you learned?

Happy Monday & Happy Birthday to Moi!

Good Morning All,

Happy Birthday Shout out Wisey D! My fellow cancer! This topic falls in right on time, because I just had the best weekend at my 20 year class reunion. I have to say I am not fighting 40..I am embracing each new year because I swear they just get better with time. Because we are the sum of our experiences I have to say I truly would trade nothing for my journey. If I could offer my past me any advice it would be to continue to test and challenge myself..don’t let fear rule the day. Listen more, Laugh alot, and inspite of it all Love Always. I have no clue how long I have been blogging here..but I have to say I have learned more about myself in the past 3 years than I have about men..frankly I think they are the weaker and more confusing sex..talk about a mystery wrapped in a riddle..but i digress.

I am whatever you say I am

Good Morning!

I would tell my younger self plenty! Mainly:
_ don’t waste time on situations that will not be beneficial to you. I mean emotionally, spiritually etc…

_ If you have to MAKE It work leave it alone!

_ always stand on who you are,

_ don’t be so in love with having somebody in the light that you overlook what’s done in the dark

Whoever claimed different? I agree that men are weaker (more needy), but confusing…back up the bus there, ladies hold all records for that category. Men are like Labrador Retrievers, simple and loyal. Just feed them, pat them on the head once in awhile, and talk nice, and they will follow you anywhere and jump thru every hoop.

Now women on the other hand, even confuse themselves.

Suprinsingly, my vision in my 20’s about dating, relationships, have not changed that much…I knew then that marriage was something that I wanted and even after a failed marriage, I dusted myself out and got back out there. No relationship can sustain when there is no direct communication and honesty about feelings and emotions. It can only stay bottled up for so long until it blows the lid off…LITERALLY!!

I would have told my 20-something to slow down and go ahead focus on school more than trying to be this-do-it-all-for-my-husband type wife! No relationship means you have to lose focus of yourself and who you are.

Everything we go through in life, we should learn something from, be it good or bad. I take everything as a learning experience and seek to find a different, better way to do it!

Side note: I learned my dang lesson Sat @ The ATL Summer Jam when I hurt my ankle wearing these silver heels before we even made it to our seat!! The concert was GREAT nonetheless!!

Good morning. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WD. EMBRACE EACH YEAR. EVERY YEAR IS A BEAUTIFUL YEAR. TRULY!!!

I’m pretty much the same as I was in my 20’s. I didn’t really throw caution to wind. I had my fun, but was careful on most fronts. I have learned:

1. To love myself first.
2. Laugh a lot
3. This too will pass (don’t make yourself sick over a situation)
4. People will disappoint you
5. Love yourself FIRST!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISE DIVA Thanks for all you do to keep me entertained from 9 – 5! :) Have a great birthday.

Truth be told, the mistakes I made in my 20s are still the mistakes I make today. I’m still head strong, I’m still a flight risk, I still stick around when a guy isn’t sure about what he wants out of a relationship, I still have low tolerance for stuff when it doesn’t go my way. I think I’m better at articulating my feelings and not getting caught up in emotions. However, I see a common theme with the guys I date and the issues they face, so it can’t be all them it must be me.

Don’t think I’ll ever have it figured out til I’m off the market for good. :)

Happy Birthday WD, the blog has been a trip, and you are responsible, thanks.

@ ARED …on a serious note, you bring up a very good point that should be noted by all when you said “it can’t be all them it must be me”. When we (and I mean me also) find ourselves in repeated situations, it is a hard but necessary thing to ask, “what is the common denominator here???”. A fact of life is that the person in the mirror IS the common denominator. We are where we CHOSE to be almost always, consciously or subconsciously.

Again, I mean me also.

I don’t think it’s really a matter of gaining wisdom through aging such that you could advise your younger self and get a response of anything but ‘yeah, whatever!’. People in their 20’s that aren’t after settling down and commitment are certain not to find it.

Some people start their families earlier in life. It has the result of kids being well out of the house by the time you’re 45-50. At that point, it’s like getting your life back. You have the means and health to enjoy it. A lot.

Others put off starting a family to have fun being single and unencumbered in their youth, before they perceive they’d be too old to have fun. They put off starting a family until they’re 35-40, and then they have kids in the house until they’re 60-65.

It’s a personal choice, but I think most people don’t think of it in terms of being a personal choice. They consider that no matter which path they choose, it’s simply the way it is for them. I took the former path. I’m glad I did! I get to enjoy my kids as adults, something that those who wait are unlikely to be able to do.

great post!, I don’t feel so bad now. My daughter will be 22 when I turn 45, and at this point i’m really weary about having another child for the reason you mentioned:

“it’s like getting your life back. You have the means and health to enjoy it. A lot”

I am always aware of the fact that if i do get married, that because I already have a child (and possibly he will also) that alone time some couples have right after marriage won’t be an option for us, we would have to get it on the “backside” when the kids are grown and gone.

It’s a personal choice, but I think most people don’t think of it in terms of being a personal choice.

If I had my choice, I would have done it younger. I didn’t want to be a baby mama tho. So single and childless it is.

I’m 32, but I’m seriously considering closing down the shop after 35+ if I am not married. Being a first time mom at 40 is not appealing to me. Having my kids graduating college as I’m filing for Social Security benefits is not appealing to me. Having my kids have to stop life in their prime to take care of my old ass is not appealing to me.

We’ll see what happens tho. If I do marry, the choice is not entirely mine.

What I have learned:

1. There will be haters throughout your life (esp. if you’re happy)
2. Find the silver lining in all things (sometimes, breakups need to happen)
3. You are not a product of your environment, rather a product of your expectations! Keep your expectations high and you’ll yield better results.

Primarily, I would remind or rather strongly advise, the 20’s me that, only what you do for Christ will last.

There would have been a lot of decision I would have made differently, obviously. It’s just that I’ve had marvelous and remarkable experiences serving God then serving my own agenda.

i wanted to chime in on the World Cup. Ghana has speed and controls the midfield very well. I don’t think they will get much farther though, because Germany, Brazil, and Argentina (and probably the Netherlands) all have better strikers. My gut feeling is that Ghana will fall to Uruguay. Before the US game, all the goals thye scored were penalty kicks if I remember correctly.

Brazil is the favorite, but I’m betting on Germany.

However there are other areas in my life that I wish I could have given myself advice on in my 20’s outside of dating. @Lucinda – your 9:54 concepts were sharp.

I think your 20s are for learning about yourself, making mistakes in life and love while navigating through that part of your journey. You have to maintain a healthy balance of optimism, cynicism and second guessing without being extreme in any of those aspects. Hopefully in your 30s you can learn from the mistakes in your 20s and minimize them, thus capitalizing on your experience to guide you in the future.

@Hope you are on point with this one. That is why I believe that timing has everything to do with love. I remember being a teenager and seeing this lady cry her eyes out while I was working at the airport. She had a few people around her, and she kept saying “falling in love was the worst thing I could have done, and everyone told her not too.” Apparently she was in the military or something and she would be thousands of miles away from her beloved. If timing would have been on their side who knows….

I’ve learned that love has a mind of it’s own ~ not that we don’t chose who we love, but we have no control over if they chose to love us back.

What do you think of their chances against Uruguay?

@Swiss??

they are playing some good carpet football(Ghana) but they dont have a potent strike force to pounce on half chances and make them count, esp in bigger stages like the world cup, where defences are tighter. So im not overly optimistic.

Im sad for the USA in some respects.Their patriotism is to be emulated as is their enthusiastic support base, all over america, africa included. That should help popularise the sport here.

But in a way im happy America are out. Their televsion commentaries are so ignorant and overly biased due their basketball and football experiences which make them whine everytime a referee makes a bad call.

Soccer fans the world over know that bad calls are part of the human experience otherwise reducing a soccer match to a baskeball/american football type, slow, stop and go type of scenario would make soccer such a caricature sport.

I was really tired of their whining..the tv sports castors (USA)..glad that their team is coming home. :-)

When you have your kids do you come to fully understand that same firm hand that guided you through is the same exact hand they’ll need as with anything, love life and living happens to us all.

@ Ghana

Accurate appraisal. I wish that my USA team had gone farther, but their skill with the ball at their feet is not what it needs to be at that level of play. I think our stikers were maybe a little better, but Ghana controlled the middle of the field and seldom gave away the ball thru clumbsy footwork as did the US team.

Regarding the bad calls, when my son was playing (and being coached by a former member of the Nicaraguan national team), they were always taught that they had strive to score at least three goals, one gaol allowed by the other team, and one bad call by the refs, because as you said, bad calls are part of a game that is moving so fast.

all the rules in soccer are in black and white but in a 90 minutes game, everything is up to the referee’s(and 2 assistants) interpretation of them…..

the foul tackles, offsides, penalty kicks, added time,..u name it.Thts up to the ref.

there are bad calls when teams score or when a foul is awarded..which can also result in a free kick being awarded and a goal being scored.

So where does it end if we were to ask for tv replays for every conceivable foul that can be committed in soccer??…

why not just have a machine do the refereeing then??

I think he broke down at the end because the words of that song were not only personal to him but when MJ first did that performance live on TV..he himself got the “spirit”. I’ve learned the older a woman gets without getting married the less likely she ever will. A woman of 30-40 has met dozens of great men her lifetime, and she turned them all away because they weren’t perfect. Now they are all married and the only thing left is the scarps.

My girlfriend’s sister just turned 26. She barely even dates. Why? Because no guy is good enough for her. She just bought her first cat and is preparing for a long lonely life. Meanwhile her younger sister is going to be getting married soon. Why? Because her sister realized that why I am no means perfect, I am a pretty good guy. I am no Prince Charming. But I treat her right, I am loyal, I have ambition and a good job, and we share some common interests.

This blog and the comments has been a great look into why so many women die alone, despite dreaming of their wedding day since they were 7.

I’ve reffed soccer, and coached it. No question that the (non)goal in the England/Germany game was one of the worst ever. The problem with soccer is that the game moves so much faster than anything we Americans are really used to. I am not sure of the answer truthfully. I think a replay system with VERY limited access (like the (non)goal) could be challengeable, but not much more. Where I have a problem is more with the US game where the ref NEVER had control of the game and it looked like the WWF in the penalty box. I did not question his missed call as much as I questionsed his letting the game get out of control. Bad calls are part of the game.

Amazon, getting played by players is common for women who are goign to die alone. Players lie and make themselves out to be this “Prince Charming” the Die Aloners are looking for. It’s easy to spot a good man and spot one that is only interested in the booty. But delusional women who are looking for that perfect guy just can’t see past their own unrealistic dreams. So they get played a few times and die alone.

I’m saying neither did I (blow off stuff), I just took for granted that I could party all weekend, not have to study, and take the tests with the memory of class and what I read.

I think had I taken the time then to develop study habits I would’ve faired better when having to use the habits vs. relying on my memory.

@Diana

Um, adult men don’t emulate other men. To do so is not an homage, but an admission of some “tendencies”. You see kids biting styles, but once you’re grown you find out what works for you and stick with it. **Note: this generalization is formed froma a number of conversations about beer, food, and clothing preferences from my contemporaries.**

I want to know, how come it seems that many men started wearing a bald head after Jordan made it popular. Before then even if they were balding they tried to make it look good. And my other question is what is with butt implants? I saw this ladies butt at Church yesterday and it did not look correct, it was pointy.

LadyJ The whole rap game is pretty much “surface @ best” right now. I think Drake has skills, and I like that he’s not afraid to be smart. I’ve heard some rappers in interviews and been amazed at their ability to articulate because their music and lyrics are so dumbed down. Plies is one of those people. Why can’t they just be openly smart? Jeezy is one of those people too, although I think he’s embracing it more of late. He’ll also sneak in some gems on the sly to let you know he’s smarter than the average rapper. “I got a black Bentley, I call it Phantom of the Opera” let me know he knew a little something.

On topic for a moment…what have I learned.

1) If it is not right for one, it is not right for either (so if he/she wants to go, it is better for both of you to not fight it).

2) If a woman talks to her man about a problem, she wants him to listen not fix.

3) Most married (and probably single too) women eventually go through a “desperate housewives” phase, where they have an unspecified “unhappiness” that they will, in the lack of anything else, blame on their husbands. All the guy can do is be sympathetic and try hard to keep his mouth shut until it passes or she divorces him.

4) (as said before) NEVER argue with an idiot, bystanders can’t always tell which is which.

5) You cannot make someone love you, they either will or won’t…and logic has nothing to do with it, never has and never will.

6) Respect is more important thanlove in the success of a relationship. All it takes to fall in love is a pulse.

Love me some PRINCE! I like the early, more contraversial Prince songs too!

Late on topic – I take this blog as a fun form of entertainment and I get some valuable tips on things that are not relationship-oriented. Good recipes, concert news, housekeeping tips, shopping and sale tips, etc. I have made a few nice friends friends on the side. As for relationship stuff – it has just confirmed a lot of stuff about men that I already knew or suspected. I had made most of my mistakes with men before I started coming here – the main one being wasting my time in dead-end stuff, trying to make unworkable stuff work. It’s nice to have a place to hear about other’s ideas on things. All in all, it’s fun!

What we’ve individually learned is still being applied, learned and relearned over and over (why some of us are still single).

I get that there are days where a topic may speak to something in your life, and on those days speak up, ask questions, and let those that do answer.

There’s usually no malice intent on here and most people will answer your questions, just be prepared for judgement, misunderstandings, and some real isht to come your way if you ask.

Other than that, most of us are releasing the pressure of work will silly conversation.

Welcome, stick with it, and don’t be such a punk; you can learn anything without asking questions. And knowing is half the battle..

If I meet you and you don’t cook, don’t like cooking, don’t wanna know how to cook, am I not wrong for expecting that to change once we’re in “a relationship”?

If you’re dating a guy (and I happen to be one of them) that can only help and not “just listen”, then I need for you to respect that about me. Call ya homegirl and vent, or if you just wanna tell me, don’t be surprised if I respond to your diatribe with a blank stare. Telling me to listen is giving me keys to a car that I can’t drive.

But that’s the type of guy I am.

If you want a “just listen” type of dude; what you do. He can go shopping, to Sex and the City 3, and y’all can braid each other’s hair. I’m not that dude, and I expect my lady to know that about me and act accordingly.

As far as this “women only want a man to listen” stuff, I say handle that on an individual basis.

Personally, I fall into 2 camps with this. If I bring you a problem that I’ve already found a solution to, yeah I just want to vent. If I’m truly lost, yeah I want you to help me fix it. It’s hard for me to ask for help and that is something I’m working on. If you’re close to me and have been dealing with me for awhile, you know this already. So I will bring it to you in such a way that won’t be hard for you to figure out!

Where you will fall short with me is when I muster my pride and let my guard down and ask you, my man, for help and you have NOTHING to suggest or can’t even offer your support – you are USELESS!

Allow me to interject my knowledge on the topic at hand, as it has helped me in my relationship. If you want someone to just listen, (because men want an ear sometimes as well). We just say something ot the effect of. “I just need to vent” or “I don’t want you to say anything I just want you to hear me as I talk” this was after many arguments due to unsolicited advice. I always tell her if you tell me something really bad and I see it’s going to hurt you I still may comment but do not let that take away from me being just a shoulder to lean on.

Lucinda

Not sure of this, but is one reason becasue men don’t like to lose, and they have this need to be the one who walks. just wondering. Me personally, I just accept it, wipe my eyes if no one is looking, and start looking ofr an upgrade. Why fight it. Never could understand that either frankly.

If I can’t help(ie you don’ want me to), I can’t really actively listen.

I just don’t really get this, but do you, Dan.

Example – My SO got a call that a pipe burst while he was at work today. The water company had to shut off the water. He had to leave work and get a plumber over there. I’m not a plumber and don’t know of any good ones. He already has a plumber he has used before and does good work.

There is nothing I can do to fix this problem for my SO. So should I not be able to actively listen since I can’t do anything about it?

When some ladies want to go tangents about office politics or that “[chick] you just can’t stand” (and you all have one), that’s when a cat like me gets lost, I got nothing.

Dan Your SO already had a solution. Actually, it wasn’t even a problem anymore. He was just relaying the events to you. So, if I’m telling you about a problem that I’ve already solved, then all you really can do is listen. It’s like me telling you a story. Now, if I’m telling you about a problem I haven’t solved, it’s because I’m looking for solutions. For ME, there’s no therapy in venting; therapy is in the solution.

I’d tell my younger self (18 – 27 years):

1. Be selfish; I gave of myself more then I ever received.

2. Eff the future; have fun now, my sacrifices will not payoff.

3. Never be truthful to girls; they only believe in lies and didn’t believe in the truth, so lie your butt off to get what you want.

4. Treat women what they’re worth; never treat them like princesses when they’re sl*ts and h*es.

5. Don’t look for “the one,” look for fun; what you truly seek doesn’t happen for you, so don’t waste your time waiting for her, she’s messing around with the bad boys getting “used up.”

6. Demand sex from women early on; doing the right thing doesn’t payoff, because they’re getting it from someone else but just not from you.

7. Don’t save yourself for “the one;” She doesn’t exist and your virginity isn’t worth anything.

8. Don’t sell my 1,000 shares of apple computers stock before the IPod came out, and buying Google stock at $85 per share isn’t too pricy.
