Top ten dating rules for vacations

I have officially shaken my birthday blues off and I am actually looking forward to the big day next Monday. I plan to have a wonderful, fun-filled trip to Florida. I will relax and read, soak up some sun, and most of all flirt like a professional! I’m talking shameless, nothing to lose “boy macking” behavior.

Vacations have a way of loosening some of your inhibitions, don’t they? That is the great thing about taking vacations, you can forget all your worries and focus on having a good time.

Vacations are supposed to be fun but sometimes it doesn’t always work out that way. I can recall a few “when keeping it real goes wrong” trips. I made a wrong move (told an older woman I was alone) and ended up stuck with jerk (her son!) on a boat for the weekend. Or the time when I landed in the midst of a couple’s retreat as I was going solo. Fun times, oy.

What is the best vacation you ever had? Did you go alone or with friends? You guys may know that I am not a huge fan of dating rules, so to speak. I admit that perhaps there is something to be said for being “grown up” and adhering to a few guidelines to avoid any problems.

What would you list as your top ten dating tips or rules for summer vacations? Do you believe that being away from your normal world allows you explore a different side of your personality?

Have you ever been on vacation and did something totally out of character for you?

mqew, there is nothing like my basement for vacation. MiniFridge, Snacks, big screen, cable, surround sound and a bathroom. LOL I can go anytime and it is cheap :)

I don’t gamble either, I like Vegas for the shows, pool side parties, topless pools (lol), heading out to the desert for camping and ATVing. Also, I like that tons of international stores are there for shopping.

If you go overseas, make sure you find a way to avoid those extravagant roaming charges for your cellphones! Sometimes they can be as high as $4 a minute!

EPO @ 10:18: I agree. Please don’t go overseas and go to McDonald’s/Pizza Hut, etc. :-)

The best date vacation that I had was to New Orleans. I rented a condo in Metairie, LA. We had our own wheels around. Cafe Du Monde, Harrah’s Casino, Bourbon Street, Breakfast at Mother’s Restaraunt…

1. You do not have to go on every excursion, visit every site or participate in every activity.

2. Plan for a day of doing nothing.

3. Do not go with someone who is obsessed with sticking with the schedule or must be in charge. (These types tend to add unnecessary drama when Murphy’s Law kicks in.)

4. Learn to relax when dealing with gate agents, cabbies, shuttle drivers, desk clerks and so on. They have been dealing with tense, travel weary people all day. Be a breath of fresh air or kill them with kindness and you just may get the free upgrade.

5. Pack light. Find outfits that go with as few pairs of shoes as possible. (I’m a big fan of travelling in yoga gear.)

6. Find something to do that is off the beaten path that will give you a true experience of local flavor. However, do not place yourself in harm’s way to do so.

7. Drink an apple martini or three on Day One. Pina Colado’s on Day Two. Rum Runners on Day Three. Please email me for drinking directions for trips over three days.

8. Do not pack anything in check luggage that is irreplaceable. Keep your most important valuables with you in your carry-on luggage. Trust me, I work behind the scenes at the airport. I know how easily bags get lost, things get stolen out of bags and sometimes, those machines rip bags open and the contents get destroyed.

9. Speaking of #8 – Don’t check your most expensive luggage. Buy luggage that you don’t mind taking a beating to be put under planes.

@PR ~ with your expectant bundle of joy, you have me thinking of Frank Ski. Him and his wife were married for a number of years, but after a few months of moving to Atlanta, she quickly became pregnant with twins. Then got pregnant again a year or two later. You may be having twins! Something is in the sunshine here in Atlanta! (lol).

Sorry, back to vacation spots.

Hey all –

Most all of my vacations are the best. I love to travel! I guess my favorite one was Paris. It’s been my dream to visit since I was 13. The beach vacations are awesome too because I love the water and clear beaches!

My sister got married in Antigua and because the hotel was a couples resort (and I didn’t come with anyone) I really felt single on that trip! The whole resort was filled with honeymooners and engaged couples. There were a few couples that were there to work on their marriage though. I could tell cuz they looked unhappy, didn’t talk at dinner and the husbands starred a second too long.

Leggs, thanks for pissing on my parade. I pray that we are not having twins. I only want one child and making sure we have no more. LOL. The plan was to move to Florida in the next 5 or so years but with a child coming we both agreed we would rather raise it back home and around family rather than here. So, in the next three years we will be moving back to Minnesota. :)

Also, second favorite vacation was to Washington, DC. Many of the attractions there are free or low cost. My best friend proposed to his wife at the Lincoln Memorial. We were in town with them that weekend and enjoyed the Cherry Blossom festival. The metro actually makes it pretty easy to get around DC. We stayed in Bowie, Maryland. FYI, there is a 6 month wait time to get tickets for the White House tour and you have to go through you US Rep or US Senator. It really wasn’t that expensive either.

Dating Trip to NYC is great also. Who could not like a walk through Central Park. Seeing a Show on Broadway. I would suggest getting tickets in advance. Some people live in the TKTS line. I am glad that I didn’t do that. The Grey Line Bus tours can get you around The CIty. The NYC public transportation is like no other. There is so much to do there. I’ve even taken the Mrs. there just for day trips. Delta and Airtran have numerous flights there daily. It may even be one per hour. I have friends that live here and work there. We usually stay in a Bed and Breakfast that is in Brooklyn. NYC is a more expensive.

Miami is another place where I’ve enjoyed a dating vacation. It was a little different than the others. It was little more relaxing than the other places. We really hung around the beach. We did visit some places around Miami, but mostly just chilled. We went out to a few clubs. Not to mention that we literally ran into Luther Campbell & Eve one time in the Pelican.

New Orleans is well known for gravity storms. Other than party ’til you puke, I’m not sure of the appeal anymore… it’s not the city it once was. Much of the cultural goodness is now absent, with the more decadent being persistent.

Vacation for me is more along the lines of a quiet beach or cabin in the mountains, seeing historical sites, stuff like that. Relaxation varies for different people, I suppose.

New Orleans is just somewhere that I am not drawn to. I don’t care how many times I hear how great it is it just has never been enough to give me that urge to want to find out what it is all about.

Now I do like the casinos. My husband hates it but I like it. Never been to Vegas but have been to Cherokee and Biloxi a few times with my girl friends. The last cruise we took I spent a couple of hours at the slot machine.

When plan our vacations we make sure there is something we both will enjoy doing. He likes diving and parasailing and all the kind of stuff. I try that stuff because he asks me to but it’s his thing. I like it okay after trying it but still that’s his thing.

During our last cruise vacay we did the off road safari and that was nice. That is something we both want to do again.

Our next big vacation will be to Spain. Not exactly sure though if we will do a cruise or fly there.

An item on my bucket list is to take a gondola ride in Venice. So maybe Barcelona this year and Venice next year.

Until I get to those big ones I will take as many small ones that come my way.

My son wants to go to Disney Land this year as opposed to Disney World. I tried to tell him that Disney World is better but he still wants to see for himself.

Or my trips as a single guy, Africa is #1. Lake Victoria and all of the wildlife around it. I went in through Kenya. It was really breathtaking.

Rio de Janerio is #2. Sinbad never lied when he said that Americans don’t know how to party. Carnival is amazing.

London is #3. The weather was cool and crummy, but I went there to see my favorite singer live, Sade. That alone put it in my top five. Buckingham Palace was cool, too. But hearing Sade sing about a woman in Somalia….

To show how much I love Sade, she made that trip rank higher than my #4 favorite trip to view the Sphinx, the Pyramids, etc.

abc – I’m with you. I like to vacation in spots where I can enjoy some real downtime.

Being well-travelled. Seeing the world. All wonderful things, however, at this point in my life, I’m not really into seeing places just to say I’ve seen them or doing things just to say that I’ve done them.

And quite frankly, I tend to care more about the friends and family that I am vacationing with than the actual destination. Because me and my folks bring our party with us and we have a good time regardless of the where.

Hey Folkers – Best Trip.. Umm lets see.. Theres been a few.

Heidelberg – Beautiful felt like I was in the sound of music.
Brazil with J Slayer.. Been to Brazil alot but to go with your porn star Buddy Priceless
Ibiza – I wasnt too cool to dance all night
Nice – The scenery and wine was like a movie
Amsterdam – for obvious reasons
Florence – 2 words Leather Goods.. Gucci headquarters
Rome – The Coliseum
Beijing – Seeing a Shoalin Temple outside of Beijing but you know..
LA – This was my first flight and Vacation as a working adult.

Alot of this stuff was done under the guise of IT work.. I often travel alone.. I’ll come back later for the travelling with someone rules.

Now as for traveling.. Pack light preferably a hikers back pack, so you can keep your bags with you. Keep your passport and ID on you at all times, never leave them at the hotel.. Find out where the US Embassy is first thing. Exchange money at the airport for local currency cause if they see american dollars the price goes up.. Where ever you are plot your course before you go out using a map. Dont look like a tourist. Rent a Motorcycle or scooter to get around.. Its easier to move about and make corrections. Trust your Instinct.

I liked Italy, too. Venice was okay. The canals have problems with the water being stagnant. So, it really smelled bad when I was there. They have a few sewage problems, too. The smell killed the romantic nature of it. I really enjoyed Rome much much better.

One way to get around the “going on vacation alone” is to go at the same time a group is going to be there. I have some friends who are lawyers and go to the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyer convention every year. The conventions are always held on some Caribbean island. So I’d go during those time periods so that even if no one I knew was gonna be there, there would at least be some activities and people I’d want to be around.

Music Festivals are also a good idea. As well as themed cruises.

Going to Chicago alone (won trip from my job) was beautiful. Cold as hell, but I was in Chicago and wound up at some gay bar…had a ball. Oops, had a blast!

Won another trip to Washington from a different job and stayed in a fabulous Hilton Hotel. Saw Roberta Flack w/o makeup (not a pretty sight). Very interesting navigating those lettered streets. Not sure how they drive and not have a boatload of accidents. I call it the City of Debauchery!

I can’t put Vegas and New Orleans against each other. They’re great for different reasons.

I love that Vegas has that dry heat. My hair does better there. The humidity in New Orleans is ridiculous.

Bourbon street stinks after a night of drunken partying and is full of trash and horse dung.

The food and drinks in New Orleans absolutely can not be beat!
