On Friday, I flew to Washington, DC last week to attend a really unique conference called the Blogging While Brown conference. I did not know what to expect because I had never been to a blogging conference. I knew it would be interesting when I received a cryptic email that some conference attendees would have a chance to speak to White House staff members at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. I pretty much became a basket case from that moment.
We had a chance to meet with Corey Ealons, Director of African American Media and Coordinator of Special Projects and Jesse Lee, Online Programs Director. They were both very kind and engaging and we had a great discussion about politics, education, technology, etc.
They talked about the need for people to become more involved in the political process and the national discussion using various forums and platforms online, especially through whitehouse.gov. A lot of people don’t feel as if they have a voice or influence on what goes on in our country. This site provides an outlet to engage and interact with the policymakers.
It made me think about how much our politics make up who we are. I certainly learned a lot about myself and my friends in the last presidential election. I think it definitely becomes a part of how we view potential partners as compatible or not.
Do you think the politics and dating relationships should mix? Would you be brave enough to bring up a hot button political topic when you are on a date?
I can recall being on a date with a white guy who made some pretty provocative statements about black women and politics. I have to admit that it made me gun shy for a long time about dating outside my race. Do you think that our politics have to match in order for us to date successfully?

Several points:
1. I think you should at least have a basic understanding of each other’s politics. There are some things that will eventually have to be talked about.
2. No, your politics do not have to match. Some people with similar politics seems to get along quite well, some people with vastly differing political ideas seem to get along quite well.
3. I’m sorry that this guy’s political beliefs made you gun shy. In an ideal world we can talk politics without having to be in each other’s faces about it.
4. “Director of African American Media and Coordinator of Special Projects” Is this a real position? Conversely, how much anger would there be if the White House created a position called “Director of Caucasian American Media and Coordinator of Special Projects”?

@stirrin-itup: re #4: it’s called ‘the white house press secretary.’ or just accept that messages are crafted differently for different audiences. what may resonate with *you* does not resonate with everybody. it’s no different than any other form of advertising.
that said, your politics = your values. in a long-term relationship, values compatibility is important. but even in the dating stage, it’s key. i want to be able to enjoy dinner and not want to throat punch my date. i can’t do that if i am dating a conservative. there are very, very few policy points on which we’d agree. and the driving principle behind conservative ideology and policy (’strict father’ as george lakoff put it) is one i can’t really get with. i, frankly, don’t understand how carville and matalin do it.
so i say all of that to say: yeah. your political leanings are important (to me) in a relationship. (reason #217 why i’m marrying the finance.)

@anonymousella: “i want to be able to enjoy dinner and not want to throat punch my date. i can’t do that if i am dating a conservative”
Are you saying that you want to harm conservatives? Whether you agree with a person politically, or not, it shouldn’t drive you to violence.
Also, I don’t mind the position at all. I’m jsut thinking that, if we live in a post-racial society, as I was actually told Obama would usher in, why is it necessary to have Black Entertainment Television, a Miss Black America pageant, a Director of African American Media, a congressional Black Caucus. There is a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, but I don’t foresee there ever being an NAAWP. Just sayin’…

I like to be able to discuss politics and current events with my dates, but I generally try to keep it light at first. The overall objective of a date for me is to get to know someone while having fun. Many women just aren’t that interested in politics, and that would make a date boring for them. Boring for them is boring for me. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and resort to talking about Lil’ Wayne going to jail. lol
Conversely, how much anger would there be if the White House created a position called “Director of Caucasian American Media and Coordinator of Special Projects”?
Stirrin A special title isn’t needed for such a position because generally all media is Caucasian American Media.

why is it necessary to have Black Entertainment Television, a Miss Black America pageant,
Stirrin Let’s invert the situation for a moment. Suppose ALL television was Black Enteratainment Television, almost every channel. Imagine that in the media your views and circumstances were either never discussed or misrepresented when they were (probably due to lack of white producers and writers). I’d wager my salary that in that scenario, it wouldn’t take long for a White Entertainment Television to evolve. Consider the same for a Miss America Pageant where 98% of the contestants were black. All that said, BET is only there because nothing else is. It doesn’t represent quality programming and caters to a certain not-so-positive cross section of AA society.

Morning beautiful blog people!
I recently asked my SO would he date me if I was politically conservative. He said that in itself would not count me out, but we just would not vibe well and have as much in common. We discuss political events all the time and it helps that we agree.
Every conservative I know I have to tip-toe around and avoid certain subjects. I refuse to do that in my personal life, so no, couldn’t deal with it. It’s the same to me as dating someone of a radically different religion. Converting me ain’t gonna happen!

Wise Diva, I don’t think the issue was dating out of your race with the “white guy” who made the comments towards you, it was his political views. I really do not care what a persons political party is. I vote somethings conservative and some things liberal. My main issue is that we both serve the same God, other than that, everything else is tolerable. Like abortions, I believe in them my wife doesn’t. I think if you do not want the child, have an abortion, she totally disagrees. I love her very much, even though we have different views. In essence, politics should not be a deal breaker when dating, they are not your “code” of life and I think if that is all you have to talk to your mate about there are other issues that need to be handled.

Stirrin Did you purposely overlook the comments of some bloggers who were married and had differing liberal/conservative views? I would say that marrying someone with “conservative” views is about as much as you could do to “welcome” those ideals. See the problem is often that people try to create this artificial dichotomy…you’re either conservative or you’re liberal. I may be way off base, but I tend to think that people are much more complex than that. There are areas in my life where I take a conservative approach, there are some where I take a liberal approach, and there are others where I think that neither in it’s extreme is adequate. I do agree that we can eliminate all the news channels though. The Daily Show is probably more objective than all of them. lol

I immediately thought of them once I read the blog topic.
Politics is rarely brought up on dates and is normally discussed on a tangential or surficial level. It’s not necessary to be politically aligned to date someone but that’s one less commonality to connect on. I could deal with someone who may have political differences but likely not if they’re extreme in their views; extremists are usually the most intolerant and take themselves and their views a little too seriously.

I equate politics with WWE rastlin’ (as my grandpa used to call it). My best friend’s aunt used to do housekeeping for a hotel, and he would meet wrestlers because they were on the road. The funny thing is that some of the wrestlers that claimed to not like each other were roommates and hung out together when they were on camera.
I’ve always felt that the two big parties work together to keep a third party from really gaining prominence. Seeing them out there together on First Street, Constitutional Avenue, and at Union Station together is a sight.
During the spring of 2010, I got to spend some time in Washington working with a lobbying group duing the whole Health Care passage battle. It was interesting to see folks like Boehner (Repub) hanging with some pretty liberal folks. Or seeing John Lewis hanging with conservative.

Ok I have a story, sort of related to the topic. I met a woman not too long ago and we were having a good conversation about how childhood family structure influences our current dating habits. She admitted that she deviated from her parents’ perspective in that her parents are creole from Louisiana and some extreme viewpoints about race, color, and “pedigree” (btw I really dislike this word as it applies here). She then follows it up by saying “Don’t worry, you’re light enough, have good enough hair, and went to the right schools, so they would like you.” She said it like I was supposed to breathe a sigh of relief. Although she didn’t completely agree with her parents’ perspective, she still sought their approval. Have any of you run into these extreme sorts of color disparities in your recent dating misadventures?

My exes’ family are from the islands (Trini, Venezuela, etc) and they had a thing about being too dark. I guess I was light enough for them to approve of me but one of the aunts told my exes mom that if he and I had a child, the child would have peekie hair. I guess because I don’t have that silky, fine, straight type of hair. I was offended but sometimes comments like those are better left alone.

wow, Dreams…that is an interesting question. if i was subject to such color requirements, i didn’t realize it. i have heard various family memmbers comment though about a particular kind of hair, skin or eye color being more desirable when it comes to having kids. thankfully, this was NOT in my immediate family but distant cousins. it is sad to think there are people who stand by falsehoods such as biracial children being more attractive just because one parent is white. sad, sad….

Dreams – There is still paperbag testing in 2010, yes there is! I have a friend that is half Cuban, half AA. Depending on the day, she looks either AA or Latino. Grew up in Miami & married a AA.
ALL I HEAR around her is lightskinned this, darkskinned that! Of course, I’M OKAY to hang around her cause I’m on the lighter end of the spectrum. If it ain’t light or white, it ain’t right with her! It gets worse & worse! I am offended by it all and have told her. And her mother especially sheilded her from being around AA’s or knowing anything about her AA heritage. It’s certain ATL folk I can’t even bring her around – she wants to be bougie so bad but does not have a clue! I finally had to wean away from her!

Lawd don’t I know it…it hurt growing up in/with a color struck family and constantly being called “black” and other deragatory terms. What’s even sadder is that my dad’s side of the fam was just as if not darker than I am/was. Looking back on it know I just shake my head at it and keep it moving. It wasn’t until I came to the “A” that I grew to understand/love/appreciate my pretty dark brown skin…..ignorance may be bliss for some but knowledge of self is priceless.

@DreamsM, This is still going on. Personally, I know of a bride-to-be that had her wedding called off. When the groom’s mother met her she raised h-e-l-l and said she was too dark. He told her in the end it was just too much and he could not do it and leave his mom out their all alone. The funny thing is he would never let her meet his mom, I thought he had another woman.

I do not hang around people with that slave thinking. Regardless of being dark or light I feel like you are the fool that is keeping the fool company listening to all that mess.
The funny thing is I’ve heard other races say, why worry about that all of you are black.

Yes I’ve encountered that several times in my past. Men of different complexions approach me on the regular but for some reason the lighter complected ones loove me. I’ve also had men who like my dark skin for several reasons…like that’s just what they’ve always liked or I’m dark like their mothers but the one I’ll never understand is when a man claims he only likes dark skinned sisters cause a red one just did him all kinds of wrong…when I hear that ish I’m like
and then I’m ghost…I’m thinking this fool only likes me by default and I refuse to be anybody’s second fiddle.

Told her to remember what she did today because she has to repeat it tomorrow.
@kimmie ~ there will probably always be “paperbag testing” as long as we have race issues. Spike Lee said it best with the Jungaboos (sp?) in Do The Right Thing. How old is that movie? We’re still facing the same race related questions.

@Sassssssssssssssy, you know what I had a few people here and there tried to bring that junk to me, but I can truly say I had a Blessed childhood and upbringing. My parents and family (daddy’s side) really built my siblings and I up, they told us we could do anything and that we were beautiful. I always got plenty of compliments even as a small child when my mom would take me places. So when someone said something nasty a school here and there I knew they were jealous because everyone else said I was smart and beautiful. Even in HS I was very popular…had dates and two guys fought over me. However, I have seen that mess society does to others and it is not right. I used to feel a cringe when I saw it going on with classmates and I would jump in and say something. The crazy thing is I was told, “we are not talking about you, you are pretty but such-and-such is not a pretty black like you.” All my life I saw people acting like I was an exception to the rule when they did the color thing, but I feel like we are all in the same boat. Hell, I rolled up this swiss boy head in my car window, he said I was the baddest black woman (he did not mean these little color shade games) he had ever seen, and I told him no I am the baddest woman you have ever seen and let my window up. My thing is this PROFESSOR is not second to anything.

colored means a cross tween white and black…

returning way late to the conversation. i like how some folks just can’t allow for hyperbole. that said …
@stirrin-itup do i really need to say that no, i wouldn’t *actually* throat punch someone for being a conservative? (they’d probably shoot back, just sayin’.) but i might engage in some loud arguing with lots of incredulity expressed on my face.
(fwiw, i’m “way left” but not, IMO “intolerant.” i actually grok conservative ideology pretty well and understand its appeal. i just really, really have issues with the ways in which conservative policy affects people — particularly ones like myself — when practiced.)
@dreamsmaterialize would i be wrong to say yeah? … lol. honestly, i’m marrying someone who has my back and brings me joy. that he is not broke is certainly a point in his favor. we couldn’t have this relationship if either of us weren’t pulling down dough. but the things that bind us are non-monetary (similarities around interests, politics, religion, education, family background, etc).
