Dating politics: Wise Diva goes to Washington

On Friday, I flew to Washington, DC last week to attend a really unique conference called the Blogging While Brown conference. I did not know what to expect because I had never been to a blogging conference.  I knew it would be interesting when I received a cryptic email that some conference attendees would have a chance to speak to White House staff members at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building I pretty much became a basket case from that moment.

We had a chance to meet with Corey Ealons, Director of African American Media and Coordinator of Special Projects and  Jesse Lee, Online Programs Director.  They were both very kind and engaging and we had a great discussion about politics, education, technology, etc.

They talked about the need for people to become more involved in the political process and the national discussion using various forums and platforms online, especially through whitehouse.gov.  A lot of people don’t feel as if they have a voice or influence on what goes on in our country. This site provides an outlet to engage and interact with the policymakers.

It made me think about how much our politics make up who we are.  I certainly learned a lot about myself and my friends in the last presidential election.  I think it definitely becomes a  part of how we view potential partners as compatible or not.

Do you think the politics and dating relationships should mix?  Would you be brave enough to bring up a hot button political topic when you are on a date?

I can recall being on a date with a white guy who made some pretty provocative statements about black women and politics.  I have to admit that it made me gun shy for a long time about dating outside my race.  Do you think that our politics have to match in order for us to date successfully?

Sasssssssssssssssssssssssssy I guess when I read some of the history books and realized how this “color thang” happened. I always felt some relief that “Massa” didn’t get my granny, and thankful I didn’t have that mentality. My dad side of the family is all shades on colors, but you know us by our features. The funny thing is my grandmother pushed education and not color.

So I am in  mode when I see big, grown, rusty folks talking about color, and where they fall on the spectrum. In my family we talk $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Professor did you deal with that alot growing up?…did you ever feel funny or bad about it? And if you did when did you become comfortable with it?….that wasn’t too much was it?

Melo I usually don’t give a rat’s patooty about what you post but that last line in your 2:55 bothered me…but as you’ve said it’s not hate just a preference…maybe it was the way you said it but either way, I get your point…to each his/her own.

Too much to catch up on, but whoever mentioned training a new employee I feeeeelllll you. I’m doing the same thing and I’m bout to tell this chick just get up and quit. And if she tell me anything else that requires a ST instead of SK I am going to scream. That was my pet peeve as a child and everybody in my hood could never get it right. The word is STREET not SKREET. As uppity as she is trying to be, she is killing me on the inside. And she got a track loose. Who hired her? Ok I vented. How is everyone doing today?

Well you tend to mostly see a darker skinned person with a lighter-skinned person. Not sure why that is but it is. For whatever reason, I tend to be more attracted to brown or darker skinned men. But I have dated on the lighter side of the spectrum…no biggie

@Leggs – I think pretty much everyone is exhausted by her. Yesterday one chick reached her breaking point and basically told her to pull out a pen and pad and write it down step by step. She also told her to quit talking when someone is trying to explain things to her so that she can actually LISTEN and just be waiting for an opp to jump in with your two cents

@Sassssssssssssssy, you know what I had a few people here and there tried to bring that junk to me, but I can truly say I had a Blessed childhood and upbringing. My parents and family (daddy’s side) really built my siblings and I up, they told us we could do anything and that we were beautiful. I always got plenty of compliments even as a small child when my mom would take me places. So when someone said something nasty a school here and there I knew they were jealous because everyone else said I was smart and beautiful. Even in HS I was very popular…had dates and two guys fought over me. However, I have seen that mess society does to others and it is not right. I used to feel a cringe when I saw it going on with classmates and I would jump in and say something. The crazy thing is I was told, “we are not talking about you, you are pretty but such-and-such is not a pretty black like you.” All my life I saw people acting like I was an exception to the rule when they did the color thing, but I feel like we are all in the same boat. Hell, I rolled up this swiss boy head in my car window, he said I was the baddest black woman (he did not mean these little color shade games) he had ever seen, and I told him no I am the baddest woman you have ever seen and let my window up. My thing is this PROFESSOR is not second to anything.

DreamsM – I didn’t know that people would still be surprised that ignance is alive and well… Some people are just ‘color struck’… period. Although, I’ll admit that I thought most people that are color struck were older (50+), and thus some sort of ‘ole school thinking’. I have a friend, older like almost 60 (old co-worker). She’s from some city in GA I’ve never heard of and can never remember… anyhoo… she’s very light and always have not so positive comments about darker complexion peeps…
