Dating politics: Wise Diva goes to Washington

On Friday, I flew to Washington, DC last week to attend a really unique conference called the Blogging While Brown conference. I did not know what to expect because I had never been to a blogging conference.  I knew it would be interesting when I received a cryptic email that some conference attendees would have a chance to speak to White House staff members at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building I pretty much became a basket case from that moment.

We had a chance to meet with Corey Ealons, Director of African American Media and Coordinator of Special Projects and  Jesse Lee, Online Programs Director.  They were both very kind and engaging and we had a great discussion about politics, education, technology, etc.

They talked about the need for people to become more involved in the political process and the national discussion using various forums and platforms online, especially through whitehouse.gov.  A lot of people don’t feel as if they have a voice or influence on what goes on in our country. This site provides an outlet to engage and interact with the policymakers.

It made me think about how much our politics make up who we are.  I certainly learned a lot about myself and my friends in the last presidential election.  I think it definitely becomes a  part of how we view potential partners as compatible or not.

Do you think the politics and dating relationships should mix?  Would you be brave enough to bring up a hot button political topic when you are on a date?

I can recall being on a date with a white guy who made some pretty provocative statements about black women and politics.  I have to admit that it made me gun shy for a long time about dating outside my race.  Do you think that our politics have to match in order for us to date successfully?

I equate politics with WWE rastlin’ (as my grandpa used to call it). My best friend’s aunt used to do housekeeping for a hotel, and he would meet wrestlers because they were on the road. The funny thing is that some of the wrestlers that claimed to not like each other were roommates and hung out together when they were on camera.

I’ve always felt that the two big parties work together to keep a third party from really gaining prominence. Seeing them out there together on First Street, Constitutional Avenue, and at Union Station together is a sight.

During the spring of 2010, I got to spend some time in Washington working with a lobbying group duing the whole Health Care passage battle. It was interesting to see folks like Boehner (Repub) hanging with some pretty liberal folks. Or seeing John Lewis hanging with conservative.

I just told a guy on my team whom is disgruntled with another co-worker (female) that arguing with a woman is gay. He asked me how is arguing with a woman gay. I paused and he got the point. LOL

extremists are usually the most intolerant and take themselves and their views a little too seriously.

Ain’t that the truth…and for some reason they look at you crazy for not understanding their fervor with regards to said views…come on now son.

Which is why dating someone with views radically different from mine is out! Believe me, I’ve tried. I am liberal, but I dated a left-wing extremist once and it was not pretty.

I mean, Carville & Matlin are cute and all, but no thanks!

Sassy Me, I agree with you also and will even expand the definition of “extremists” views not only to politics, but to anything. Parenting, food, dating, health, money, sports etc. :)

Don’t you know that Wise Diva is loaded too? She has a vacation house on St. Lucia, a house in the Hamptons, and is a part-time resident of the State of Hawaii.

She drives a Maserati Granturismo.

@PR – yep ’cause there are some women that will verbally humiliate you – so it may not be appropriate at work, but it taint gay!

Kimmie:

I’ve got some rosemary and thyme growing in my garden. But, I have so many tomatoes that I have to give the plants more support. I’ve got regular tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. There are so many cherry tomatoes that I will probably take some to school and give them to the secretaries and deans.

Poppa – I wanted to plant some cherry tomatoes! Didn’t get around to it though.

I did plant some hot peppers this summer. I use them to make pepper vinegar. My boss planted a lot last summer and kept me in business!

Try to get paid by the number of posts.

PG,

I did the green bell peppers first, but when I saw the price on the yellow and red peppers I planted some of those as well. I have several types of hot peppers and some cherry peppers as well. Plenty of herbs, tomatoes (all sizes, collards and cumcumbers. Next year I plan to add beans and squash!

Dang Professor you got the farmer’s market going on. Can you do some acorn squash just for me. There’s a nice dish I like to use it for.

Speaking of cherry tomatoes, my little niece likes to get into my moms garden and eat them…I’m not sure who is worse, my niece or the squirrels. lol

@DreamM, I love fresh veggies out the garden. This time of year I love preparing a meal centered around my harvest. I gotcha on the acorn squash.

@Slim I love fried green tomatoes. My mom had to plant extra tomatoes when I was growing up, because I would pick them and fry them. So she had to plant extras if she wanted a ripe tomato.

I usually don’t buy my plants from Home Depot, but this year I did. They had a sale for all vegetables and herbs around Mothers day. So, I got the plants that that I stated plus some cucumbers and zucchini. It was like 10-12 plants and I got them all for less than $20.

yellow squash plants yield a lot of yellow squash. I ran out of things to do with it. Zucchini yields a lot too, but I can make zucchini bread or something with it. I don’t know many folks that want yellow squash bread….

You found a good deal. My mom will plant her own seeds in flower pots and sit out the plants when it is time. I go over to her house and reap the benefits. I purchased my red and yellow bell pepper plants from Wal-Mart.

Professor…I know that it was a good deal. It was less than $2.00 per plant.

My dad plants dry beans and corn kernels and gets plants from them. However, he is retired and has nothing else to do but tend to them. He didn’t plant any tomatoes this year, though. My mom is already calling me about mines so she can do fried green tomatoes.

For the record…me don’t likey squash. Zucchini yes, squash no Just doesn’t sit well in my mouth…immediate gag reflex

Slim, I like my tomatoes sliced with s&p on the side when I eat greens. As for the cucumbers I add a dash of vinegar to the salad dressing. This year I planted some pickling cucumbers IMO they have a better crunch and standup to the salad dressing and vinegar better
