Battling birthday blues, how do you cope?

So I have a birthday coming up this month, which means I will probably go through a period of “woe is me” my life isn’t where I want it to be yet.  I always treat birthdays like some kind of weird deadline that I somehow missed.  As if I have gone an entire year accomplishing nothing.  I know it’s completely ridiculous, but in my head, that’s how I perceive it sometimes.

Thankfully I have wonderful friends and family that always make a big deal of my birthday.  Even when I try to avoid everyone and pretend the birthday isn’t happening. They don’t let me wallow in self-pity for long.

It sounds so silly, but I admit that being single (with no real prospects) on my birthday is far worse then rolling solo any other time of the year.  Believe it or not, I handle the holidays without lamenting about my singlehood. I relish in it, even; but when my birthday approaches I almost have to fight off a case of the birthday blues .

Does being single during your birthday ever bother you?  Do you have moments when you wish that you had someone special in your life? Does it happen randomly or during a special time? How do you handle it?

What is the best way to celebrate your birthday when you are single and ready to mingle?

What is your most memorable birthday? I would love to hear about it!

Good Morning Crew!!!!

I must admit while I got over the Holiday’s with a smile being single my approaching birthday has me a bit twisted…….the past three years for my bday has been with my former FWB person……..that is not the case this year thank God!!!!!!! No need to waste time with someone where the relationship is going no where…..lol…..now my summer theme is girlfriend affairs and group settings……I am truly not complaining and thankful for my growth to stand alone and not force dead end relationships any more….it is just a thought or reminder that this year birthday I am truly feeling some kind of way……..being 30 has been great!!! 2010 has been awesome too!!!! so I will take and build on that for 31 and continue to be a better person and allow love to find me!!!!!! :)

Good Morning Lady J… My first bday after leaving my husband was difficult, but I got through it with awesome friends who said we are going out. I am so thankful for them doing that. Now I am okay and trust that love will find me when the time is right.

What is the best way to celebrate your birthday when you are single and ready to mingle? If I fail to travel to Miami or some other place I am going to do several celebrations around the city with severla of my different groups of associates…..starting with No Mas! Catina, Sweet Auburn Bistro, Chow Baby, a concert, planned Happy Hours, and things around the city I have yet to do like Imax and Martinis……lol…..I love to plan and entertain so I will plan it up the month of August and I know how to alternate each group on different dates to get everyone in……lol….I am so not interested in a birthday party perse…….maybe @ 35 or 40 but def not 31……..lol

Lady J you’re on fire already, chica. That post shows you growing as a person and knowing your value as a woman b/c you choose to NOT entertain dead relationships. I did that, too recently and I feel so much better about it and most of all ME. :-)

No need to waste time with someone where the relationship is going no where…..lol…..now my summer theme is girlfriend affairs and group settings……I am truly not complaining and thankful for my growth to stand alone and not force dead end relationships any more….

Worth repeating…

Good Morning All,

WHAT!!?? WHAT??!! IS THIS !!! Wisey! are you sure you are a Cancer? I mean the blues about a birthday? Come on sugar! I mean I can get the blues about a dude maybe at Christmas..or around Arbor Day. But my birthday? Naw that day is all about me and nothing gets me down about my day. I look at my birthday not as all the things I haven’t accomplished in a year..but with a grateful heart that I made it another year..without hurt, harm or danger—and thats to other people..but I digress. I guess if I get the blues about singlehood..its at random times. Maybe if I hold a cute baby I will think awwwww it might be nice to do this again..but that quickly passes when “the boy” walks pass or ask me for money for some silliest. I am coming up on the Big 40 in two years and I am already planning my day or rather my year. I want to go to London, I want to take another cruise, I want to learn to play golf. I am ready for a whole heap of new adventures..maybe it will include a guy..maybe it wont.

wassup LadyJ! I love your posts this AM you are on fire! Hey Sassy and PK

Hmmmm

The B-day Blues I understand the deadline thingy I do that a lot. I want to achieve _________________ by 35 and ___________ by 40. I think that is good, but I usually achieve my goals and I know what a win is in life. Sometimes a win my mean you did buy that house by 30 in accordance to with your deadline, but you have saved more $$$$ so you will be more prepared and have a successful home ownership when you do.

As for needing an SO to help me have a good time on my B-day. Nawwwwwww I know enough single people that love getting out so I will have a blast with them. Not to mention I was not born with a twin and don’t mind kicking it solo.

@Sassy I’ve been thinking about that over the years. I want to do something fun and classy at my home, or maybe a concert with a close, selective group and dinner before the show or even take a trip. I think about it every year, but I haven’t planned it yet. Maybe this will be the year!

I didn’t grow up celebrating birthdays, so not much to say on the topic of that specific day. However, I do have moments of reflection when I get flustered about my life…mainly career.

I’ve never really set a goal around an age, but at this age I thought I’d be solid on what I wanted in life…not.

Anywho, good friends and a good time out should do you just fine on your birthday. Hell, why even go out? Have a casual party at your house with adult games…maybe catering…maybe massages, facials…maybe an in house screen on the green…with some close friends.

@Luvbug I agree I am picky about who I let in my house…I need positive energy and positive people there, but there is nothing like inviting four or five folks over and having a great time. Last year I cooked a pan of lasanga, salad and breadsticks along with tea, water and a pitcher of sangria. My friends had a wonderful afternoon just talking…listening to music and chilling. This was an unplanned event I wanted some lasanga and they said they were coming over to help me eat! Just think how wonderful a plan event will go with good friends.

I,too, will be celebrating b-day #31 later this year,as a new wife and I am so excited. This year has been a very blessed year and we are only 1/2 way through it.

Birthdays are meant to be celebrated whether it is an all out bash or just hanging with some friends, don’t let your day be clouded by your relationship status. I celebrated my 30th with my girlfriends and female family members with a Girl’s Night Out at Taboo 2. It was awesome, we had a ball !! This year I know I will do something different and wild and crazy!!

Preach “A Plan”!!!!! Morning all –

I did have a particulary heinus birthday while I was single. I was seeing somebody, but he flaked last minute and I was alone. I think it was my 30th at that. Though I celebrated hard in Vegas a few days later, it wasn’t the same.

Being single typically never bothers me, but there are times when it’s just inconvenient. I’ve been fortunate to be blessed with thoughtful guys in my life, who at least remind me I am loved.

As for the holidays, I enjoy being single as I can make my own plans without having to worry about someone else’s family. Not to say I wouldn’t enjoy bouncing from house to house with my s/o.

On Topic: I don’t really get into holidays, so birthdays have never been a big deal for me. Now, I’ll never turn down a good time, so if friends or fam want to get together and celebrate, I’m down. On the other hand, I’m just as good doing whatever I would usually do on that day of the week.

can’t identify with today’s topic at all. i enjoy every occasion with or w/o a special someone in the pic because i always have my friends and family, and they are what make celebrations special to me. i do believe that when you’re coupled up it enhances the good times, but there is simply no ‘woe is me’ factor in my life for lack of an s/o at any time.

ARed – I see the helicopter lights shining on me. I’ve just jump over the fence, am being chased by dogs (sound effects: errr grrrrrr)…now attempting to break and enter through the rear patio of some stranger’s house. LOL

That’s me all the way. I don’t think it’s healthy in my case. I like the convenient part of relationships, but if you stay around too long, Medusa is sure to pop out like a jack-in-the-box.

Examples of past real life internal dialogue…Didn’t I see you yesterday? How long you gone be here? Will this end soon? I can’t breathe!

Curiously, in a supposed anti-incumbent year, most of the departing are not retiring but seeking higher office. We may recycle more than we replace. The bad news is that a frustrating 114 seats still have but one contestant. Two of them aren’t even incumbents, meaning they will affect state policy without being vetted by voters. And I have to think that we’d be better off if many had run instead for the Legislature — and cut down on the number running unopposed. Georgia’s problems are numerous. They aren’t going away. There’s too much stale thinking at the Capitol, on both sides of the aisle. New voices would be welcome.

I enjoy birthday celebrations filled with friends and family, food and drinks. My favorite was Lordy, Lordy…I turned Forty. And this years Alive at Forty-Five (Prince vs. Michael Jackson party). Since I am single, I invite all of the women that I’m dating to come to the party. Two of them got upset, but everyone kept their cool. I want people to witness my life. Is it ok to let the people you are dating see the competition?

@Purple Rain, I changed my moniker (My Name is Prince) to show respect. I am a huge Prince fan as well. Started back in the 80’s when Prince, The Time and Vanity 6 went on tour. I haven’t missed a concert tour since. I have seen Prince live in Detroit, Atlanta, Washington, DC and Alabama. Even considered quitting work to follow Prince on tour around the US (still may do that one, when he tours again).

I’m good cz…..actually having a moment as I read all of this positivity and celebration of US….To all the Queens of the MIA blog:

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Good Mornting Crew!

I look at my birthday not as all the things I haven’t accomplished in a year..but with a grateful heart that I made it another year..without hurt, harm or danger

Kym, I like that!

There have been a few times where I felt a little sad, but after losing some dear loved ones, some that were young and in their prime, I am more thankful and reflective. Now I see every year that I am not only alive, but healthy and thriving, I am extremely grateful.

My birthday is January 17, so most folks are just getting over Christmas. Usually there is some kind of “snow” that hits just around my birthday too, so living in Atlanta you know what that means! Mom said there were snow flurries when I was born!

Anyway, this year my SO gave me a wonderful birthday party, and he catered it mostly himself.

But yeah, birthday is the time to go wild and really LIVE IT UP!!!

The 378th Annual Festival de la SexyCool this past October was probably one of the best birthdays thus far.

We celebrated with GNO (Girls Night Out) on Friday.
Couples Bowling on Saturday.
And me and the dude alone together on Sunday.

It was really my first time ever having a real series of planned events for my birthday. It was cool how my folks came out and celebrated with me.

My 40th birthday is coming up in 2 years also. Initially, I am planning “40days and 40nights of SexyCool” with some sort of activity for the 40 days or nights leading up to my birthday. I will be inviting my favorite folks on the planet to join me for things like massages, mani/pedis, drinks on patios, card parties, cookouts, a couple of weekend trips and a whole lot of fun and debauchery. But…not so much that I kill myself. I will be turning 40.

@Harvey Pardue ~ it is typical although I never understood it. I was chided by a few friends for being so chipper about turning 50. Hell, if you have your health, your eyesight, your hearing, your ability to walk and talk, a job and place to eat and sleep, why not be happy. If you’re not in a relationship SO WHAT. Many more should embrace the fact that they’re able to see another year.

Morning Folks!

peeping in from work

Lady J Congrats on aceing (sp?) your midterm. You just got another reason to celebrate.

Wise Diva Girl you are going to be too busy this month to even think about not having a man on your birthday! I’m like Kym in that my birthday was always the one holiday when a man was the LAST thing on my mind. I was too busy celebrating me. My best years were 34 – 38. 34th was celebrated with a trip to NYC. 3rd row center seats to A Raisin in the Sun. 35th a bunch of girlfriends and I went on a cruise. The prelude to that trip was the main crew hanging out in Orlando for a day. 36th was the Tom Joyner cruise with friends. 37th was spent on the beach in Miami alone (after a cruise with family) and my 38th started with hanging out at J’ville beach alone followed by a week of celebration in Atlanta.

Ironically, my first birthday with the now hubby was spent nursing him back to health because he had a motorcycle accident. And my 40th was VERY low-key compared to what I imagined years ago. But that’s because I’d just finished an entire month of celebrating with the bachelorette soiree, wedding and honeymoon. Nonetheless, I still spent time with some of my closest friends on my actual b-day.

SCool I’m volunteering for the job of karaoke host on my night of your 40days and 40nights of SCool ;-)

@Harvey Pardue ~ you saying she got her health will definitely fall on deaf ears. A woman turning 50 doesn’t want to hear that. Tell her she’s beautiful. Tell her she should be thankful she doesn’t look 50 (even if it’s a small white lie). If you have the funds, ask her to pick out a special gift she would like. Bottom line, keep complimenting her. Take her to her favorite restaurant after buying her a beautiful dress to wear.

Taz, my SO went on the TJ cruise some years ago and he has not stopped talking about it! He showed me the dvd from it and we are SO going, maybe next year! I can’t wait!

Funny that birthdays are the topic today. On Q100 one of the interns is about to turn 25 and she was reflecting on her life. She said things are not quite how she planned them to be at this point and she was a little sad. She said she is grateful because she has a great career and a nice boyfriend and all, but she sees a lot of her friends have accomplished more at this stage of the game and she thought she would have too. Some folks were calling in telling her to quit whining, but most said that was natural. Everyone doesn’t have it all figured out and most folks lives don’t go exactly as how they planned.

Miss Moni – I love the beach, so if I can incorporate the beach into my b-day celebration, I’m good.

Lady J – that cruise was worth it to me. I complained about the price initially but they got me by saying we were going to celebrate another friend’s 40th and since I’m willing to do a little extra for a birthday… The thing is, I don’t want to cruise anymore if it’s not that cruise. The cruise I went on the following year was so ‘blah’ after going on the TJMS cruise. You definitely should go if you can.

Leggs, funny thing with me is that i’m at my best when single. s/o and i were talking about this just the other day. i fall into the habit of skipping workouts to hang with him and eating/drinking late in the evening, sleeping in on weekends and so forth. when i’m single i’m strict with no eating after 6 and i don’t drink alcohol because i just don’t. my weekend mornings are usually very active and my workout routine stays paramount. we have now agreed to spend more of our time together being active and watching what and when we eat. he will no longer pressure me to join him in the late night meals and snacking. he is very muscular and works out every day at noon, so he can do 3000 cals a day and burn it in no time. me? ….. no so much

@ARed ~ were you insecure growing up? I doubt it in your case as well.

Leggs – I had my insecurities. I was skinny, flat chested, I had braces and a big nose. I remember crying over it.

My mom had us in dance and self esteem workshops. That made a big difference. Then one day she told me that God made me and loved me the way I was. And the sooner I accepted myself, the easier life was gonna be. For some reason I took that to heart. So from age 15 on I was good.

Cuz I’m still skinny, flat chested and have a big nose. But it all seems to work out for me!

I’m trying to get us into a better routine but it is SO hard to crawl out of bed from the warmth of one another to hit the gym in the mornings. After work – I’m rushing home to see him instead of going to the gym. Thankfully I have a home gym, but my workouts aren’t as intense and when I go to the gym. I just experienced my tenth straight birthday being single, not for lack of trying. It does suck, I’ll admit. When you reach a certain age, at least where I’m from, and you’re still single you start to get funny looks. I’ve even been asked, on my birthday, what was wrong with me for still being single. Apparently if you reach 28 and you aren’t married or at least in a committed relationship you have to explain yourself.

LURKER is up there with the rest of the potty mouth bloggers in my book I cannot say he is any worst than the average women included. This is the home of PSH and others. I agree we do not have to go to the gutter to have fun that is why I fail to see why some of the gutter talk is accepted and other gutter talk is forbidden. If we are going to have a policy with no gutter talk it should be fair and consistent with a some “teeth” to it (they should not be allowed to blog). Some of those lurking would probably join us as well.

Good Afternoon,

I have not been truly single so I cant answer the first question. My last two birthdays I did not celebrate them with my wife but I was thankful nonetheless for simple reason of just being blessed to see another year pass so all of my birthdays are special.

The best way to celebrate your birthday when you are single and ready to mingle is doing what you want to do. Only you can define what that is. It may be a lot or a little but it is what you want to do.

From Cleopatra we learn that it is not beauty that makes a Siren but
rather a theatrical streak that allows a woman to embody a man’s fantasies.
A man grows bored with a woman, no matter how beautiful; he yearns for
different pleasures, and for adventure. All a woman needs to turn this
around is to create the illusion that she offers such variety and adventure. A
man is easily deceived by appearances; he has a weakness for the visual.
Create the physical presence of a Siren (heightened sexual allure mixed
with a regal and theatrical manner) and he is trapped. He cannot grow
bored with you yet he cannot discard you. Keep up the distractions, and
never let him see who you really are. He will follow you until he drowns.

Dreamboat, of course!

Speaking of fish, I’m going to try this chicken recipe I prepared, but use tilapia or salmon. You rub it with a spicy rub, sort of blacken it in a non-stick pan with a little oil and serve it with mango salsa. Tasty and very light – nice with some sangria!

Charlie, we’ve been down that road countless times on this blog, including debating some of the stuff from Harvey’s book. If you keep running into the same type of woman, look in the mirror at the common denominator in all this – you! What’s wrong with you that you keep attracting the opposite of what you claim to want. You can give women all the advice in the world, yet can’t seem to find the woman you want. Something wrong with that picture.

See, you’re preaching to the choir on this here blog. I’m sure some of the blog men will attest that not only are a lot of us blog women very attractive, we are accomplished in areas outside of work. Many of us can burn in the kitchen, we can speak on any subject and we’re very up on current events. And we know how to rock some fashion. A lot of us are very well traveled. We have interesting hobbies. Some of us make very good money and are responsible financially. We bring much to the table.

Now, what do YOU have to offer? Same old, same old?

Just wow Charlie Wax. First allow me to ask, how young are you? Most of us are grown, experienced, well put together women. Frankly you trying to sell brand new but you got the wrong crowd. I’m sure some 20 year old just leaving the gate can appreciate it though…LOL. Most of us dont do fantasies so you ain’t gotta shake us to wake us. DreamsM your 4:31 made me think of the lady that tried to kill her children. 20/20 did a special on it one a few weeks ago it was very sad. To make matters worst she got preggo because she was thinking the jury would not send a pregnant woman to prison. Her daughter spoke out (the one she was carrying) it was just sad all the way around.

@DreamsM ~ I think most parents DO KNOW, they just don’t care. As DMX stated, she was cruel and mean, but he didn’t die from it. He said he would love her from “over there.” A place far from his being!

One thing I have always tried to do is pause before I yell at lil leggs. Something I learned from my mother…she didn’t do this!

@DreamsM ~ I think most parents DO KNOW, they just don’t care.
Often I think parents react out of anger and frustration. Having kids takes a boat-load of patience. You have to be able to temper your emotions and do what is best for the children. Many parents haven’t mastered this skill, especially if they’re really young parents.

I didn’t see the special, but that’s sad. I do agree that some folks have a mean/cruel way about them and others just think keeping children breathing is successful parenting.

Pipeline is the place or database where we house prospects hoping for prospect turned clients. If nothing comes about, then we clear those out and clean the pipeline.

If you’re talking about the ballplayer, girl he done struck out. I mean it was never a no go for me but as far as any respect, none whatsoever. I will do the needful and get along but that’s about I can muster up. LOL

Sadly, I think many parents view their children as obstuctions to the life they used to live, and therefore resent them. Even if they never actually verbalize this, their interactions with the children say it all. Kids are basically growing up feeling unwanted. Mine will never have to worry about that. They’re a joy in my life, and I thank the Creator daily for deeming me worthy of such a blessing.
