Bored at home? Do something about it!

When we discussed the topic of diversifying your dating options, I posed the question, how do you meet people who are a little “different” than you normally date. Well, I think I’ve answered my own question. One word: Yelp.
Yelp.com is a website that allows people to set up profiles and review local businesses. It’s a great way to find out what others think about places you haven’t been to. There is also the fun social networking aspect of Yelp that makes it appealing to people who enjoy meeting new people, like I do.
From time to time, there is some fun soiree that is organized by Yelp as a way to connect people with businesses in their community. You get to sample a little bit of everything and discover places that you may not have heard of.
Last week, Yelp held one of these soirees billed as Atlanta Yelp’s Gilded Age, at the oh so sexy Gold Club. They truly know how to party because I walked in and the first thing I spotted was a lady standing there in a Moulin Rouge outfit. You know it’s going to be a good night if feather boas have been spotted.
I made my way through the crowd to find Kathleen, the Atlanta community manager for Yelp. I had met her before when we hung out at Drinkshop and chatted about Atlanta and the dating scene over cocktails. This time, I wanted to ask her if Yelp was secretly a online dating website because everyone there seemed to be single and ready to mingle!
The crowd was diverse, which I totally loved. Imagine inviting all your friends from all different backgrounds to one place to nibble on yummy food while a DJ plays good music. That is what the Yelp parties are always like. A totally random, completely fun group of people who like to explore the city and all it has to offer. You mix and mingle without feeling as if you are at a meat/meet market.
Kathleen said that although Yelp is not promoted as a dating site, meeting a potential date is just a natural by-product. When you share interests like eating out or skydiving, you seem to organically gravitate to one another. The free event drew a great crowd of people who seemed to be relaxed and enjoying themselves.
Not to mention the delicious samples from places like Cafe Sunflower (a fave among vegetarians), High Cotton Bakery, Joli Kobe Bakery, The Melting Pot, Sheik Burritos & Kabobs, Maker’s Mark, Leblon Cachaca, 3AM Vodka, Savida Sangria, Cypress Street Pint and Plate and sponsors included Zipcar, Dames Aflame (how cool is that name?), and of course the The Gold Room.
I tried to make as many stops as I can, so believe me when I say it was a fun night of mingling and sampling. This was my first effort to broaden my horizons and think outside the box. I am still thinking of other ways to do it this summer. Any ideas?

I would like to go on a vacation, even if it’s a small mini-vacay, this summer but the odds of that happening is small…unless of course some man on a white horse comes to whisk me away in the back of his old beat up van, fully equipped with shag carpet, broken a/c, smoke infused, and squeaky brakes. :-p

Grace I can’t wait to do Stn Mtn my child is looking forward to that day too!!!! I have many summer concerts planned, a couple of trips, and dinners/meet ups for the summer….hell it is my normal theme to be out and about…..I need something to do for my bday weekend….although I think I am going to incoperate a Miami getaway right before school starts….who knows…….

As for what I do when I am bored…I will catch up on some reading or like Grace stated get my sleep on. I am still trying to put together some plans to fill in the gap this weekend. Part of me was thinking a few months ago I would do a small trip this weekend, however I have an important graduation to attend so I am working around that event.

I am always open to trying new things, although I’ve flying under the radar lately. I was looking at taking the kids to Europe this summer, but the deals just aren’t there right now. It costs about twice as much to go to Europe as it used to, not to mention you lose on the conversion rate. I’ll definitely be making a trip to the North Georgia cascading waterfalls this summer though. There are also some cool stalactite caves that I haven’t been to in Georgia. Then there’s gold panning at the old gold mine in North Georgia as well. It’ll be a good summer.

I’m never bored at home. There is always something for me to be doing that I thoroughly enjoy – even if it’s just relaxing, napping, vegging out, sitting on my balcony or even on my couch enjoying some quiet time or a glass of wine alone.
I guess since I have learned to really accept me for who I am and realized that my happiness comes from within, that I am in charge of my piece of mind and my peace of mind, I really don’t suffer from boredom.

DreamsM, the parade will run from peachtree (or w. peachtree???) down to auburn ave where all the booths will be set up for the festival.
just a week or so ago there was a deal to italy for about 8 or 9 days at $899 including airfare, 2bd condo and probably a couple other perks thrown in. we seriously considered it for a hot minute. check out travel zoo.

Perhaps my memory is fading, but I don’t remember end of the school year pranks like the ones these kids are doing now. To drive by and throw a balloon with water and bleach at someone’s face possibly blinding them goes beyond my comprehension. These kids are demented to not even think of the severe consequences a prank like this can cause. What happened to egging the teacher’s car???

Two things that I am ticked off about today:
1) The oil spill occurred on April 20th and they are just now starting a measure to plug the leak and they are not sure it will work
2) how the heck are you going to fill balloons with bleach and throw them at children!!! what would have happened if this child was blinded for life ??? WTF!!!! Is school not safe anymore?

@Luvbug ~ I heard about the video and finally got a chance to see it last night. That is ABSOLUTELY RI DI CULOUS!! He doesn’t even seem to breathe between puffs. Who puffs continuously like that. I understand different cultures do things differently. However, smoking affects everyone’s lungs the same way, even worse for someone who’s lungs are in their infancy stages. To think the father sees nothing wrong with this is crazy.

Our nice older neighbors came by and brought us homemade cookies and banana nut bread, that was so thoughtful of them.

exactly,Profesor! that’s why i have to kick it up with bikram and see what happens. apparently my usual Inhale yoga routine is just not enough to combat the foodie experiences s/o and i indulge in. although, to his credit, we have started going for long walks after meals. our plan is to get in a good hike before chilling for the stone mtn concert too. and i’m now doing 3 miles on the treadmill or around the property every day at lunch. i’ve put on about 15 lbs in the year and i half that i’ve been back in atlanta, and i need to get them OFF!!!

I have done it and it works.
I know the cause of my weight gain. It comes when I take a long hiatus from working out. I normally eat healthy but when I stop working out my eating habits go out the window to.

Professor, s/o commented that he’s seen the change since we started dating. i used to never eat after 6pm and i was not a drinker. regular exercise and light meals were standard for me. i’ve moved away from all that (along with a back injury last summer that put yoga on hold for several months), and it’s starting to show. i have some adjustments to make!

Let me tell you, you need little to exercise but a space for the length of your body. Between pilates and yoga (with the occasional 2-3 mile run), it’s really kinda easy to git it in everyday.

Speaking chick flicks, the marido and I watched a really good movie last night called “My Sister’s Keeper”. I am kinda surprised he stayed woke thru the whole thing. It was very touching so maybe the paternal part of him kept him awake.

Oh yeah, I never did tell you all about The Clash of the Titans. It was actually pretty good. However I found out him taking me to see the movie was just a distraction. After the movie we were supposed to go to lunch but he left his wallet at home. He refused to let me pay and insisted that we go get his wallet. As we were nearing the house I saw cars in the driveway and on the street. My sister and brother had come down for my birthday. And all of my best bffs and their beaus were here. They threw me a surprise party. He got me away from the house so they could set up for the party. I didn’t have the faintest clue the entire morning. He did good. LOL
We had to end up cutting the party shorter than planned because I started to not feel well but it was an awesome birthday all the same.

I thought they did too (cover w/makeup), but “I am” said he removed them to cut down on the time sitting in the makeup chair. It’s one or the other. It took him 9 weeks to lose that weight and with his money he could have found the best tattoo removers in the world. Naw, still can’t seem him w/o having any scars. Leggs, it’s not even that. She is focusing on one area and that is probably because she is wanting right now. Hell I sleep beside a man every night but I don’t want sex every night. And being married doesn’t mean you are going to get it every time you want it. And there are soooooo many other things to being married and happy outside of the sex.
She needs to look at it like this. One any given Saturday I will spend pretty much the entire day with my husband. From the time we get up which is around 8am 14 hours will pass in that day before we even lay down together again to even entertain the thought of sex. 14 hours of being together and sex not be what’s going on. how do i meet new ppl??? i attend some of the events on my FB. some of y’all prolly thanking FB for my absences. LOL! it has kept me busy with dating, blogging, activities, and hanging with the chicas. jus last w/e, i went to a dodgeball tourny given by a church that my new FB friend attends. how sweet of him to invite me, but his gf didn’t like it too much. she always letting herself be known. is he flirting with me? hmmmm. it’s nice to put faces with a page. the turn out was awesome!
2nite having drinks with the gurls, 2mrro attending two bbq’s, but only one sponsored by FB. taking the babies with me . . . should be interesting. sunday spending time with my beau and monday spending time with bff at her church bbq.
honestly, this is a lil too much for me. i’m a homegurl fa real. will def let some weeks go by b4 doing this again. but i’m loved and appreciate them wanting me to be apart of them.
