When we discussed the topic of diversifying your dating options, I posed the question, how do you meet people who are a little “different” than you normally date. Well, I think I’ve answered my own question. One word: Yelp.
Yelp.com is a website that allows people to set up profiles and review local businesses. It’s a great way to find out what others think about places you haven’t been to. There is also the fun social networking aspect of Yelp that makes it appealing to people who enjoy meeting new people, like I do.
From time to time, there is some fun soiree that is organized by Yelp as a way to connect people with businesses in their community. You get to sample a little bit of everything and discover places that you may not have heard of.
Last week, Yelp held one of these soirees billed as Atlanta Yelp’s Gilded Age, at the oh so sexy Gold Club. They truly know how to party because I walked in and the first thing I spotted was a lady standing there in a Moulin Rouge outfit. You know it’s going to be a good night if feather boas have been spotted.
I made my way through the crowd to find Kathleen, the Atlanta community manager for Yelp. I had met her before when we hung out at Drinkshop and chatted about Atlanta and the dating scene over cocktails. This time, I wanted to ask her if Yelp was secretly a online dating website because everyone there seemed to be single and ready to mingle!
The crowd was diverse, which I totally loved. Imagine inviting all your friends from all different backgrounds to one place to nibble on yummy food while a DJ plays good music. That is what the Yelp parties are always like. A totally random, completely fun group of people who like to explore the city and all it has to offer. You mix and mingle without feeling as if you are at a meat/meet market.
Kathleen said that although Yelp is not promoted as a dating site, meeting a potential date is just a natural by-product. When you share interests like eating out or skydiving, you seem to organically gravitate to one another. The free event drew a great crowd of people who seemed to be relaxed and enjoying themselves.
Not to mention the delicious samples from places like Cafe Sunflower (a fave among vegetarians), High Cotton Bakery, Joli Kobe Bakery, The Melting Pot, Sheik Burritos & Kabobs, Maker’s Mark, Leblon Cachaca, 3AM Vodka, Savida Sangria, Cypress Street Pint and Plate and sponsors included Zipcar, Dames Aflame (how cool is that name?), and of course the The Gold Room.
I tried to make as many stops as I can, so believe me when I say it was a fun night of mingling and sampling. This was my first effort to broaden my horizons and think outside the box. I am still thinking of other ways to do it this summer. Any ideas?

~I Am-I agree life is what you make it……we can’t focus our energies on what we don’t have and trust I am preaching to me too……it is a pain in the ass but it is not a death sentence to be single……do you whatever you want but be responsible and true love will find us…….one day…….

I am whatever, when I was a young my mom used to tell me not to hang around certain girls or deal in certain crowds. That was because of what they were doing and/or talking about. Being in the crowd gets you to thinking about things and wanting to do things. I didn’t understand back then but when I got a little older I understood. I learned to take her advice until I was able to be in a certain atmosphere yet have discipline.
Now I am not telling you to not come here so don’t think that I am. I don’t even have that authority because this is not my playground. But what I am saying is you have got to learn to discipline your thoughts. Hear (read) it and don’t hear (read) it.

I think I’m gonna do a bag of peanuts and a sugar drink…dr. pepper. Seeing that I weighed in this morning still 21 lbs under what I iniatially lost 2 years ago. Although it feels like I gotten back a couple of inches, a little afternoon walk a couple times a week will get that. I need a boost
