I have a thing for smart guys. The smarter they are, the sexier they become. It just seems to make things a lot more interesting when you are engaging in an intelligent discussion that one or both of you are passionate about. I believe that intelligence alone can make a person increase their hotness exponentially.
I can remember a time when being a smart woman didn’t matter much to guys. The shallow years had their fun moments but they certainly didn’t have many deep intellectual moments. If a guy asks me what my interests are I tell them that I am a science geek with a Biotechnology masters degree. I embrace my geekdom! It seems that as I got older the men I met and dated got less shallow, and so did I.
How important do you think it is to be intellectually matched with someone? There is only so much stupidity one can endure before the person becomes un-hot and annoying. How long could you last dating someone just on looks?

You are right, the brighter a man is, the more appealing he is. The best way to get to me is definitely through my brain.
I once dated the nicest, kindest, most thoughtful man around. He also had mad skilz in the boudoir. Unfortunately, he just wasn’t all that bright, and I ditched him for that reason, but never had the heart to tell him why. I know he wondered what went wrong, but there wasn’t anything he could do to change his lack of brainpower.

I may be considered by some a brighter man then others, but I can’t say it’s translated into more successful relationships. If anything, I welcome the conversation with intelligent women, the problem for me honestly has been finding them. I am re-entering the dating world after taking some time off to focus on my career, and I must say it seems the smart, beautiful women have already been taken.

Good Morning All,
I have this same condition Wisey. I love Geeky, quirky, smart guys. Not so super geeky..but someone I can have an intelligent conversation with..world events, politics, history, sports..just be able to converse on something other than American Idol.
How important do you think it is to be intellectually matched with someone?
Hmmm while the person doesn’t have to be super smart. I would like to date someone who again..has a higher IQ than cheese. If I ask him about politics..know enough not to say..”Yeah Obeezzy is putting them haters down.”(shout out to the Boondocks) Be willing to embrass learning and know that it is a lifetime process.

Um, guess I need to knock on wood because for the most part, I’ve dated intelligent guys. Can’t recall at the moment ever dating an AirHead or Beevis & Butthead type…that wouldn’t even turn me on in the first place. However, there are surely many different levels of “intelligence” as we’ve discussed on here before. I’ve never dated a guy that was President of the Mensa Club but does that mean all others were BIG DUMMIES? (said in my Fred Sanford voice

I’ll answer this one for some of the guys. It’s not intimidation of a woman’s brain power. It’s the ego and all that comes with it that some women have when they have a degree and a great paying job. Women tell THEMSELVES that men are intimidated, but that’s so they don’t have to look at their own flaws.

@ Jeff, I’m humble about my accomplishments.
I only tell about my credentials when asked specifics about them and then I keep it moving.
I’m proud about my accomplishments because they have opened doors for me but I don’t go around with I’m a better than you sign tattoed on my forehead.
I’ll date any guy as long as he has the following traits:
Disease free, heterosexual, single, respectful, honest, ambitious, has goals, enjoys spending time with me, enjoys being around my son
The last guy I dated, I told him I was trying to get into grad school (he asked about my goals) but the minute I took him to my house it’s like he flipped. He actually tripped that I had a house, degree, and that I was making it as a single mother.
What can I say ? I do what is necessary to survive but if I meet a guy that doesn’t hold a degree or a house it doesn’t mean he ranks low on the totem pole.

I just got out of a dating match with someone that could not carry on a conversation to save his life. They were empty and thin at best. Engaging conversation is a must for me. You have to keep my interest and stimulate my mind and in return I will do the same. Doesn’t work with only one person at bat.
To the person that asked about the degrees, I have always had more then any man I’ve ever dated. I think it only bothered one person, the rest didn’t probably think about it past the time of the conversation. What I am lacking to find is someone that is college educated. I think I might have had one. Actually, ya, I had one.
It’s difficult finding exactly what you want if your single. Dating isn’t exactly like going to the grocery store to pick some items up for dinner, it’s more like a menu of ingredients you need to make the perfect meal, finding those ingredients, and then combining them for the perfect recipe!

Three things DO come out quuickly in the investigation phase, 1) is the self absorbed, 2) is she bright, 3) does she have a good heart (tied to #1…or actually untied). Then it is time to stay or time to go.

Curiously, in a supposed anti-incumbent year, most of the departing are not retiring but seeking higher office. We may recycle more than we replace. The bad news is that a frustrating 114 seats still have but one contestant. Two of them aren’t even incumbents, meaning they will affect state policy without being vetted by voters. And I have to think that we’d be better off if many had run instead for the Legislature — and cut down on the number running unopposed. Georgia’s problems are numerous. They aren’t going away. There’s too much stale thinking at the Capitol, on both sides of the aisle. New voices would be welcome.

Question Wise. Your degree is very specialized, and realistically only a few people can really understand what you’ve studied. Most people would need two semesters of coursework just to understand your dumbed-down explanations of biotechnology. Do you find yourself avoiding talking about that, or do you just try to keep it light when you get on the topic of biotechnology?

intimidated and turned off are two(2) different thangs.
If u blarb on AND ON about ur home and degree(s), two minutes after ur meeting somebody, or as u trying to consumate the relationship and go on and on about how ur high office stressess the heck outta u,yada yada yada…most men will be turned off…..not intimidated per see.
Leave ur degree certificates at home and not pin them on ur forehead and just talk about what we gon do….and when we gon phluckk..
U be just fine!
If degrees/jobs etc have to come up,it has to be in the course of a relevant discourse..not outta the blue just because …
However, check this..some females who are bookish..multiple degrees types may fail to relate and lack street smarts coz they are too removed from the street happenings. Some dudes may avoid them coz such pple tend to be naive smtimes and bringing themk up to speed may not appeal to those guys coz oif how uneducated those chics are on some street aspects of dating etc……they are also easily taken advantage of……
They are likely to peddle the “intimadating” point without realizing the real truf….
Educated chics do intimidate some Dumb dudes tho, thats for sure!!

Dating – worse, marrying – below your intellectual level is a train wreck waiting to happen.
People who value learning and understanding what intellectual curiosity and growth and love of learning mean just know stuff, and part of that “stuff” is knowing how to be happy and knowing how to make appropriate decisions and exercise proper judgment.
This is how so many high school age girls go astray…aligning themselves with with old “hairy legged boys” who only know Redneck Foreplay, “Get in the back of the truck, bitch.”

This topic struck me as so coincidental as it is at the heart of my current love-hate relationship. I am college educated, my girl is not. I have a professional job, my girl does not. We have good chemistry, lots of fun together and a great physical relationship. Since I was raised by a stay at home mom I suppose I have old fashion values and a womans job or how much money she made has never been an issue.
The problem is she has poor reasoning skills and thinks that her emotions or how she feels is the most important aspect to conflict resolution. The obvious issue is that I am alot more intelligent than she is. She finds inteligent discussion irritating. Is it possible to ever find an intelligent woman that I am attracted to?

If your romantic interest is not as smart as you think you are, and that’s a major determining factor for a long term relationship with you, then who can blame you for not staying. Do what you think is best.
But as it relates to relationships (on average…who’s chosen and not chosen)…keep in mind that a lot of “dumb” people are successfully connecting with other folks and a lot of “superiorly smart” folks are not.
Now, maybe their intelligence is too supreme to match…or maybe smart and dumb (or trash and treasure) are not as concrete as some might think.

Extremely career-driven women aren’t intimidating to men. They’re just not that attractive. I’d imagine that an extremely career-driven man would be somewhat the same for the discerning woman: how much fun is life going to be with a person like that? A man doesn’t necessarily want an accomplished and bread-winning woman. That’s not what men want women for.
I’m a patient guy, but unintelligent women tax my patience. They tend to be difficult to get along with — I find the less intelligent, the more emotional and unreasonable.

Different people have different applications of intelligence?
The degrees and importance of the spectrum of intellect are not as relevant to dating, as we sometimes make it out to be. Is it nice to be able to have a conversation about issues that you feel are relevant? Yes.
But as Raqi pwned yesterday, being able to say nothing and enjoy one another matters more.

Are guys intimidated by a women that has more degrees than the guy and a lot of goals on her plate that she is actively trying to accomplish?
Some might be, but the men who are managing their own accomplishments are not. Some women in this position will use their accomplishments as a mechanism to emasculate or belittle men whom she may exceed in education and income level. But it’s also probably used as her rationalization when she can’t deal with her insecurities because he might have rejected her
.
Intelligence is an essential component for a meaningful relationship (for me). If I can’t conjure up any intellectual respect for a woman, then the relationship will not grow past friendship or fwb status. Dating attractive ditzy women is like chewing gum; at the first the taste is really good but after a while the flavor is lost and I end up spitting it out. Our assessments of an intelligent person is subjective, but to me it means the ability to conduct conversation across a spectrum of topics and have the ability to generate interesting questions regarding topics you’re not knowledgeable about.

The preponderance of men in my world seem to be the ones who go out with women who will never get an invite from MENSA. The ones with more looks than brains. And then when the “I’ve got a hot girlfriend” newness wears off, they moan about her stupidity only t trade her in on a model no better. I’m all for the intelligent man but a man with stuff oozing out, that ain’t even true smarts, to the point of becoming a tunneled pompous idiot frankly irks me. Good balance of book knowledge, common sense and street smarts makes for the intelligent man. The ballplayer is the prime example of the classic idiot. What’s sad is you don’t even possess true book intelligence….natural smarts. You b*&tched and moaned and pulled the race to get your position but you best believe they granted you that position but you better get to proving yourself. Now you round here tombout getting the Market Executives to come down on the “low ranked” employees cause they don’t possess what you define as “intelligence”….burns my butt. You’re so busy hob knobbing and what you call motivationally speaking that you can’t see that’s not on the agenda for getting revenue up in this mug. On client visits your black behind can’t form a good sentence without stumbling…what a freaking joke. You can’t even get the big boss man, the same market exec you snitching to, to take you serious enough to stay on a one hour conference call and it happens EVERY time, once the big boss man drops, there goes all the other execs that dialed in. When you wrap the call and ask for comments, we can’t hear nothing for all the crickets in the background. You come round here tryna “shake things up” but ain’t got intelligence to know some things ain’t NEVA changed…go ‘head, speak on my brother. What makes you an even bigger idiot is that your counterpart is making it happen. You round here wanting to kumbaya and and hob knob but this chick makes everybody jump. My CEO, your CEO clients CEOs. Not cause she’s a bully but cause she’s got a knack and possesses finesse. She’s got a budget for entertaining alone that some of us can take down our mortgage. Yet and still you can’t even get clients to take you serious enough to commit…freaking idiot. You round here emailing the 50 plus floors in the building of some award you’ve gotten but you ain’t pullin revenue….

Here’s my take on the whole “Are men intimidated by my success routine” and I’ll use last night as an example. I attended my first speed dating event and one of the 30-something ladies’ had on a business suit and clearly engaged her end of the conversation as if she were a hiring manager and I was interviewing for a position lol. “So what do you do for a profession”, hard eye contact etc etc. So obviously she believed she was in a position of authority- which is the downfall for many of the SexandTheCity types. It was not her attire or background but the arrogance and failure to realize that it is the MAN who decides whether to ask for number, call, etc. A woman has zero power unless a man gives her some ladies and you MUST acknowledge that. And I’m not saying anyone needs to kiss my Converses, but pretty much on a daily basis, women give me cause NOT to approach them and then you get to choose from the lesser guys who choose you.

I don’t believe the hype one bit that men are intimidated by women. I think if that’s what you want to believe a man won’t try and convince a woman otherwise. I think he’ll oblige by letting her believe that all the way showing his back.

This topic is right on point. A co-worker just stopped at my desk asking how I’m doing. I knew she had a hard breakup about 2 years ago so I ask how’s she doing and if she’s now dating. She says she’s not. She says she seems to intimidate men. Yes, she’s highly intelligent and one step up from being a “plain jane.” (Clearly my observation). She’s highly salaried and lives alone in a very big house. She goes on to say there are too many dumb men out there and she’s leaning toward FWB. Don’t know how I did it, but I managed to keep my eyes from bucking! She’s frustrated with the dating scene and may just opt for a boy toy. I laughed and told her to go for it.

I agree with the statement (in the article) that she should have been fired…no opportunity to resign. I completely disagree with her failing him because he wouldn’t have a baby with her. However (and I know the following statement is controversial), I’m not sure how I feel (anymore) about a 17 yr old boy sleeping with a 29 year old woman.
NO, I WOULD NEVER SLEEP WITH A 17 YR OLD, but I’m up in the air about how much it affects the guy in the long run.
I can think of at least 3 guys who dated much older women (as in well over 21 yrs old) during our years in high school. With each case, when I would try to convince the guy that it was rape, he would give a strong push back…pretty much… “It’s not rape fool. I’m dating an older woman”…then some huge smile.
I can think of another who bragged about being played with by his housekeeper…when he was about 6-7 years old.
I don’t know what counts as rape for guys?!

LuvBug – no difference to me whether the male/female dynamic. Rape is by force. At 17 legally if its consensual then its not Rape. Now underage (under 16) then its Statutory. The teacher was wrong. The student was wrong. He does get some of the blame. It was all good with the perks until the F showed up. Other than the fact of it being his teacher then it would not have been an issue legally in the outside world.
But to make sure we are clear I do not condone this at all.

@Luvbug..cause there is this foolish double standard..that still exist in our highly developed society that men should wear it as a badge of honor to be knocking down female teachers at 12 or be felt up at 6 or 7 by some female baby sitter. But reverse the sex and it becomes a whole other game. Same story but let it be a male teacher and a female student or be a male sitter and a female child. Then folks get outrage. Rape and molestation should not be limited based on sex.

They are? I remember one 12 year old in elementary, and everyone laughed at him and called him dumb. I know things in the schools are bad, but I hope they’re not so bad that 12 year old elementary school students are common. lol

Great post Leggs. I waited in college and was happy to wait. My parents did a great job of educating me on the risk and dangers of sex, especially while in HS. I had a boyfriend in HS and he wanted sex. But because I didn’t have low self esteem, I wasn’t easily influenced enough to try and appease his needs over my own.
In any case, each child is different and some are just rebellious. But they got all three of their girls out of HS as virgins. And one of my sisters waited until she was 23.

Y’all are completely misunderstanding my point.
If a young man, at that age is having sex, it’s accepted by other young men in his age group, encouraged even.
And from the older men, you get a lecture on protection, a nod and a wink.
The disconnect is in the double standard. No guy is ‘raped’ for having sex with a woman at a young age, because it’s accepted (by most) that that’s what we do.
Now the age of the young man and the age of the woman is based on the parents. Me at 12, 13 with a 20+ year old – nope, wasn’t no one having that. But a 16 year old girlfriend, sure. No problem.
@Kym

They all sit in groups in their uniforms, with the commuters, the hood rats and the drunkards.
I took public transportation or walk home at 15. My mom would sometimes tail us in her car (we had no clue at the time).
However, with city living comes city responsibilities at times. Some folks from generations prior to mine walked miles to school in all elements.

There is probably a double standard here as well. At fifteen I was allowed to go lots of places and do lots of things. I’m sure this had something to do with my level of responsibility, but it probably was also the fact that I was a boy. Righteo on this one.
I dont know who asked but I’ll say for time we live in now it’s not joke and kids need to be kids while they’re kids and moved along accordingly into maturation as they age. So naturally when they get the size and double digits numbers in age they think they know as much as you but as a parent it’s your duty to let them know. For me and my sisters, my mom was like no bc pills in here. She was with us throughout growing into being women but she was dead serious about consequences and living through them. So, I take the same route…it worked for me. While some may say that won’t work anymore, all I know is she been taught, she’s being taught, I’m a constant in her ear cause I know from experience some jughead boy can undo that in a small matter of time and touching. And I make certain she understands and know if you get it, it yours…no matter. Consequences. Not only that I talk to her about times are past where you can shake Mr. Smith’s hand based on him knowing your mama or auntie and give you a job. If you want to go big time you better start learning and earning it now. As much of reality as she can grasp at a young adult stepping off into life (she’s got a few more years), I want everything to be crystal clear on how it works out here in the jungle. Having had my son at 16, I am so afraid of him making the same poor choices that I made at his age. I try to keep him on a very short leash, but I also talk to him until I am blue in the face about not being pressured to have sex. Sex is so rampant and everywhere nowadays, it is hard to keep it or anything else away from them. I keep him busy in the neighborhood programs and sports, so he is never let home alone or at anyone else’s house. He starts high school this year and I pray he can make it through high school with no babies. We have talked to him about it and even shown him graphic pictures of STD’s and how they are contracted to get the message through to him.

I know you’re doing everything you can, but kids can always find an opporutnity if they want to. I used to go to camp and academic programs every summer. It was one way my mom used to keep me out of the streets and out of trouble. It mostly kept me out of trouble, but there were girls at those camps and programs too. I’m jus’ sayin’ y’all – if Attention Whore ever wants a new client, I want the referral fee.
There is just nothing okay with these teachers engaging in these trysts with the kids. The onus is on the adult to exercise the better judgment of the two. Wouldn’t you hafta curse or knock a sucka out if your teen boy said how he & the sexy Science teacher were vibing? Cuz that suggests she’s giving him sumthin to feed off. Especially those who were pervy lil teen boys themselves once upon a time.

I then took him into the area where STD’s were being discussed and showed him the side they dont show you in videos and on TV.
That did it for me too. We had a very graphic sex education program. There were some kids who had no hang ups about sex as teens, and even they felt it slowed them down a bit. We laugh about it on FB now

Sorry… got busy for a minute. Trying to catch up…
“I really don’t understand why underaged guys don’t feel used in those circumstances.”
Simple: Because guys never feel used when they’re getting azz. It’s like Brer Rabbit & the briar patch — “Please don’t use me for sex! Oh please, PLEASE, whatever you do, don’t use me for sex…”
The only way a guy would feel violated is if he was forcibly molested by someone he had absolutely no desire to phluck — like Father O’Grabass, for example. Otherwise, I promise, he’ll be a’ight.

Sorry, I know this topic probably got beaten to death already, but re: the teacher w/ the 17-yr-old — A couple of things:
1) Is this teacher mentally off for wanting a relationship (and a BABY!) by a 17-yr-old? Of course she is. But then, that’s a disturbingly common occurrence among teachers. I used to be one & I’ve seen it up close: Some of these teachers develop unnatural connections with their students and go through this emotional time-warp back to adolescence themselves. One reason why I’m totally on board with abc’s “never date a teacher” mantra.
2) Now, having said that, I don’t really think of this 17-yr-old as much of a victim in this case, other than the fact that ol’ girl tried to sabotage his grades when he wouldn’t knock her up. I mean this guy was 17 and a football player. If he didn’t want to hit it, there would have been no hitting going on…
And I would bet a whole lot of $$ that he never considered himself a victim while tapping that azz…

Yeah right, Melo!! She is still your daughter and you have to love her unconditionally, no matter. Who else will?
Can you love one child unconditionally at the expense of loving the other children unconditionally? Is defending a child unconditionally the same as loving them unconditionally?
A 15 year old having a child brings shame and dishonor to the parents and the family in general. You could argue that if you love your family unconditionally, then you cannot allow the actions of one to bring that shame and dishonor on the others who do not deserve it.

Of all my husbands, the most educated one was the sexiest (he was South American) the smartest (Structural Engineer) sweetest and we had two of the most gorgeous sons…now 25 and 27..unfortunately he passed away from Lung Cancer and I still miss him to this day….22 years later. Yes, a Man is SEXIER if he is smarter…I know someone now who is Extremely intelligent and has two professions…Tall Drink of Water as they like to say in the South….he is gorgeous to look at as well….Very accomplished and will remain special to me forever.
sweet sweet sweet…Sigh……..
Some men I have met have been so good looking that they took your breath away….but not much at intellectual stimulation…so the time with them was short but sweet……My last husband was goodlooking IN THE BEGINNING but the word stupid and LOSER started showing up on his forehead and I had to write him off as a STUPID LOSER. Sometimes good looking does not equate with having a brain. You know, the lights are on but nobody’s home kinda thing. There was one guy, who said (and instead of saying THE STANDARD you’re gorgeous, beautiful, etc.) he said, “You are very warm and I like your personality”…now that’s the kind of man that stands out to me. Goodlooking as hell, gentleman, MAJOR sexy WHERE IT COUNTS…
But anyways, yes It is very important to have someone who is on your intellectual level because if they are not then they are pretty much a short window of opportunity…………..

Melo- I remember you mentioning something about a woman being mature enough to marry around the age 25ish. Now if you’ve completed mapped out her life (including the age in which she is to be married), can she still be considered mature.
Sure it may look that way and she may receive all the benefits of your choices, but she’d have made hardly any of the adult decisions.

@ Dreams….I don’t see that as “dishonoring” your family as you put it. I know plenty of parents who vowed to write thier kids off if they ever got pregnant at a young age to only come to grips with reality and still be loving and supportive parents to their children. Now, I could see writing off a family member (uncle, cousin, etc), but not your own child. Now, I can understand making your child be responsible and take care of their responsibilities, but kicking them out and turning your back on them, brings dishonor to yourself as a parent because you just turned your back completely on your own flesh and blood.

Yes Melo, she may be considered mature now because of the situation, but honestly, you can’t say that you would write her off as no longer being your daughter and turning your back on her. A parent is a parent always, even when their children are grown and mature. You never stop being a parent until the day you die.
She can “do her”, but she will still need her dad. She will always need her dad and her having a baby young should not stop you from being there for her (just not in the same as you taking care of her and providing for her.) Good Nite!!
