Put a (big?) ring on it

I’m not one of those women who dreamed about their wedding day since childhood.  I’m sure I pictured having a family at some point but weddings and engagements just didn’t seem on my radar.  I remember when one of my friends got engaged last year and she was sort of horrified at the way her then boyfriend proposed. She was even more disappointed in the size of the ring.  I found it odd because she didn’t seem the type to get hung up on this kind of thing.

How important is the ring and the proposal, though?  When you are watching the person you (hopefully!) love spill out their heart and risk the ultimate rejection, is their ring selection really an issue?    A lot of my male friends tell me that if their woman even uttered a complaint about their engagement ring, it’s going back to the store. Not sure if they have found themselves in this situation but if it happened, I think they mean it!

Ladies, would the size of an engagement ring make a difference when you know they can afford something bigger and more elaborate?

What is the protocol when the ring becomes an issue? Ignore it? Discuss it? How do you handle it?

Raqi, I think a Pinot Noir that tended to the sweet side rather than the oaky side would be just fine with salmon, but even if it has some bite, it should be fine. Salmon’s a pretty strong taste and difficult to overwhelm. My own preference would be a Chardonnay, but I’d probably get a Reisling or Zinfandel because my girl doesn’t like Chardonnay; pretty much anything that’s light and sweet works with salmon. Think about it in terms of counterpoint, cleansing the salmon’s fat from the palate.

abc what goes good with the Pinot Noir? We are having dinner with the couple that gave us the Pinot Noir. What should we have? I am not a wine drinker so I have no clue what pairs well with what.

My well informed bff that knows her spirits is out of the country. Please help me out.

A co-worker commented that my ring was not an “engagement” ring (It is a 3-stone ring).

Tell her to check out all the three stone engagement rings on the Tiffany website! Good grief!

I have a lot of friends who got three stone engagement rings.

I was thinking salmon because if it doesn’t rain I am planning for us to have dinner out on the patio. I can smoke the salmon in the smoker or put it on the grill.

You can serve Pinot Noir with pretty much anything that’s not all that spicy — you wouldn’t want to have it with Cajun or Southern, but steaks, chops, and fish are all good with Pinot Noir. It’s kind of an in-between kind of wine.

For Southern, Jamaican, spicy kind of stuff, I’d choose a nice Shiraz. Yellow Tail is a good cheap brand, different from all the others, strong nose, great legs, kind of a sweet and chocolaty finish.

…the closer to room temperature you server the Pinot Noir, the sweeter it will be. If you chill it, it will get some bitter bite to it.

Im one of those over the top expain-sive weddings (Pronouced exspainsive).. Yeah we had all the bells and whistles.. Even renting a Bus for Family Members to travel.. The best hotel money could buy, only to end up divorced 6 years after we did it, really 3 because we stayed in it 3 years too long.. Im not for the expensive wedding I think people should spend that money on paying YOUR debt down before you go into it.. If you have a ton of debt its not fair for you to come into a marriage and expect te other person to help you with your debt.. I think all parties involved should be forced to sit down with a court appointed Finacial advisor and help plot the course or at least open your eyes about the monies… Because quiet as kept alot of people dont know how to handle bread, cheese and doe..

@Dk I agree with you. I can tell you this I would do an inexpensive destination wedding or I would have a small and scared one for no more than 40 people. I am not spending my money on all those plates, so I need only a few people that I really like and they are worth me feeding.

hey Proff??

@Ared..u aint missed Tazzee’ s hangout….

i will tell u guys how they do weddings in southern africa…yeah, its a big show..especially for some families..

the families actually compete,as it were,on the wedding day,to handout gifts…..if the wedding party are coming out homes where fam members have good jobs, biznesses etc..they can actually raise cash to afford them to buy their matrimonial home.

i remember making a big donation to my uncle on his wedding back then..and thats how he got his house…..

but the whole charade of being paraded like 2 prized cows at a farm show makes me sick…….wedding is not for me…

the partying, bachelor party and after party, messing with bridesmaids??

Now u talking!!
