Diversify your dating options?
I was hanging out with my fabulous cousin Stephanie recently. She lives here in the city but since we both travel and have crazy work schedules we don’t hang out as much as we’d like to. We were talking about our (only) male cousins who had married white women and how it seemed as if the family accepted them. Stephanie turned to me and said, “Well, you know Grandmother thinks that we both are going to marry white men. She told me that once”
When my cousins married white women it didn’t seem to cause an uproar. For some reason, I don’t expect the same reaction if Stephanie or I decided to marry a white man. I don’t have any proof of this, it’s just a feeling I get. It seems that we aren’t supposed to have the same options as our cousins did.
The Modern Day Match Maker aka Mr. Brunson recently interviewed author Langhorne Folan about her book “Don’t Bring Home a White Boy.” I was impressed by the points Ms. Folan raised here. She basically described the exact challenges and expectations a woman like me could face when we consider exploring our options in dating other races.
As in the video, I also wondered if interracial dating will continue to be so controversial? What kind of challenges will the next generation face if they decided to “diversify their dating” so to speak?
How can women find ways to meet and date men of other races without it feeling so “premeditated” and plotted out?
Ladies, if you have tried online dating, do you widen your selection criteria beyond one particular race?
Guys, do you find it difficult to diversify your dating options? Do you find it easy to meet women with diverse backgrounds who are interested in exploring relationships with you?

Good Morning All,
Give’em hell Morrus.
On-Topic..Wisey my cousins say the same about me. If I brought home a white guy..no one would be shocked. Hurt but not shocked.
The older I get the less I am concerned with race. If you had asked me oh I don’t know say a year ago..I might have been nope I am down with the brothas..I am not trying to swirl.(is that the right term) But now..I am all for someone who is going to do right by me so I can do right by him..period..end of story. This is no longer about successful black women blah..blah.. or cant find a good man blah..blah..nope I am concern more with someone who will show me care and concern. Now if you ask me do I dream of a white chocolate prince..not really ..well there was that dream about Nick Cage..ohh and Brian Urlacher could get it on a bad day…ohh and I got a thing for Timothy Hutton and the other guy on Leverage..but I digress.
If I ever do take the plunge back into online dating..well I personally would not rule the swirl out. That is all.

I have yet to date outside my race…….With time I do see less color but many times I am reminded color is there…..If I brought home a white man there will be jokes bc I have dated and married well very dark skin or darker men….it is my weakness….lol…….I do embrace the theme dating outside the box and if the experience is apart of my journey then one day I will see what the hype is about……I applaud multi-racial dating and marriages who fight the stigma and perception of our society……

the whole interactial dating thing requires some humor — both to laugh at yourself — and the funny stuff people do. But its also an education process and im finding that my white guy wants to “get it”, he just hasn’t been around certain things enough. But at least he’s trying and that[s what matters. Plus at the end of the day, we all want to connect with somebody so if it works it works.

I used to think I would never date anyone outside of my own race/culture-the odds are stacked against interracial marriage.I have many friends who are biracial and I’ve heard about the personal angst this has caused them in society. So I thought-no way. I’ll stay with what I know. (I’m Italian).
Then I fell madly in love with someone from a different race, culture AND religion. Did it cause some waves in our families? Yes. Do some people give us dirty looks when they see us out together? Yes. Have we had to deal with a lot of ignorance being here in this region of the country? Yes, yes, yes.
We make things work by having very open minds and very honest communication. Because we’ve had to discuss everything from religion to culture to racism, we’ve built an incredibly solid foundation.
Being with someone outside of your race/culture has its unique challenges. I think each individual has to be honest about their level of maturity, open-mindedness and need for approval from society and others before getting seriously involved with someone from a different background than your own.

Its great to hear so many folks say that they are open to interracial dating, but speaking from my own experiences, Let me be the first to say that there is very little difference between Black women and white women, but society really makes it hard for those relationships to work! The bias is still there and the anger and bitterness from the sisters will eventually take their toll. Good Morning,
I have not diversified my dating options yet since I am slowly getting back into the dating pool. I have no issues with interracial dating and/or marriage. My brother married a white woman who had two boys prior to their meeting. They now have a young son of their own but I consider my brother stepson my nephews because they are family. With that being said, my dating preference is black women.

I have dated outside my culture/ethnicity, but never outside my race. I’ve dated latinos, but they were obviously black and readily acknowledged their african ancestry. I also kicked it with a Samoan girl, but she also acknowledged being black. Same for the girl from Fiji. I dated a sista from England, and one from France. A Nigerian, a Kenyan, an Ethiopian, a Cape Verdean, a Trini girl, an Antiguan, a Guyanese, Belizean. All different cultures & ethnicities, but the same race. Almost dated an asian girl with pretty dark skin from Laos once, but we just stayed friends.

The longest relationship I’ve been in was with a Mexican, but he looked like a light-skinned black guy. I’m not opposed to dating outside of my race. I’m only apprehensive about dating one particular race, white guys…not b/c they’re white but b/c white guys get a few (if not a lot of) freebies with the criminal justice system. They can be 5-6 murders/rapes in before someone considers them a suspect…and that’s just with white on white crime. I’m not absolutely against dating a white guy, but I’m more likely to strenuously vet him and have 3-4 exit strategies set up in advance.
Maybe that’s way too honest a statement, but that’s how I feel (so far).

This has always been an interesting issue for me. I’m a white guy, raised here in the South and just turned 40. I could care less what color someone is, and I think most of my friends would agree. In fact, I have dated hispanic and asian women, and how is that any different than dating an african-american woman? It is not. I think most – not all – white people (especially those under the age of say 45) are over than hump, and I wonder if the black community feels the same? For me, it is all about the heart, and I think we all have red ones.

Black women are so under-appreciated in today’s world. The way a woman carries herself is truly what determines whether a man finds her attractive or not. Never forget that. A “polite and friendly” demeanor is approachable and easy to be around. The mocha skin, dark hair, and chocolate brown eyes that make my stomach do somersaults…well…those don’t hurt either.

For me, I’ve always tended to gravitate to black women because I’ve always been more attracted to dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes, etc. That simple. As far as making interracial relationships work, not to over-simplify, but I think you just have to put everything in perspective. Yes, we are different. In college we watched a video in a sociology class once about a study where they took a class of white kids..and told them that all the kids in the class with blue eyes were better than all the other kids. The study noted that children who have been friends and played together just the week before refused to play with other children because their eyes were not blue. It’s sad really.

As a black woman who has dated white men, I have no issues with interracial dating.
There has been a time *on this blog* where I have stated that I prefer dating black men. I have come to realize that what I am most prefer is dating the man that is going to treat me in the way that I want to be treated and I don’t care what color skin he is packaged in.
That being said, I first dated a white guy as a freshman at an HBCU. My best friend from college still is amazed how I find the one white dude on the football team to date out of all the black dudes running around campus. (I still wonder about Jimmy Vertuno and remember him fondly.)
When I was younger, I was very conscious about the looks and stares of others. As I have aged, when dating a white guy, I no longer give a crap about what anybody else has to think or their crazy looks or anything they might have to say. In fact, my last experience with a white guy, I would, almost defiantly, hold his hand and be clearly all wrapped up in him when we were out.
OH…and btw – my mom always said that I would marry a white man and my dad would have a heart attack. (My dad says he wouldn’t. LOL!)
As it stands, that’s looking like all chances of that are pretty much zero. I so heart TheDude. I’m going out of town for a couple of days on business today. So, last night, I asked him to leave a couple of hickies in some well hidden spots so that I could have some visual reminders. He gladly obliged.

Kym – she is. The thing is – she is at a job making $7.50 an hour and this job would have started her at $11.50.
During the interview, she ended up sharing with me that she left college out of state with the intent to come back home and live with her mom while going to school, but the mom had moved in a boyfriend while she was away at school. Well, of course, that caused some problems.
And now, she is 25, with her first car and first apartment and trying to make it on her own with $7.50 an hour.

It’s not quite as stressful teaching college students either. Most of them are there because they chose to be, and you can spend your time teaching instead of babysitting. lol The only problem you run into sometimes is when you have a student whose parent has lots of influence at the school, and they feel like they’re entitled to a certain grade or treatment. Sometimes the department chairs and deans even enable this behavior.

I think I have phases though. I am in my Blasian/Asian boy phase now. It was was White boys (but for some reason they are always European…gots me a German at the moment). I am always open for whatever race…but lately I have been attraccting Asian guys since like 2008 and recently it is stronger. They actually approach me now with no hesitation. I tend to run from Dominican or Jamaican men…shhhh don’t tell my family…not trying to extend the bloodline!

The thing is, she really needs some schooling.
She would do well in any sort of entry level clerical or mail room or something that would move her in the direction of Corporate America.
Right now, she’s just a young lady with mostly fast food, Six Flags, retail and airport experience.
Her situation keeps forcing her to take a job just to have a job.
I just really liked her spirit and who she seems to be as a person.
She has even called me back to ask if there was something that she did wrong.
(Lawd geezus, my heart breaks for her.)

Marriage update:
I have to step back and let her do some stuff. I am used to cooking and cleaning so I just do it. She does it but we clean two different ways and I just like to cook. So we have a weekly schedule for who cooks. Now she likes to clean with excessive bleach and cleaning products and I only like to clean with cleaning products. AND I do not like my t-shirts smelling all flowery after she washes them. LOL (just had to let that out)

And of course in Latino households…it a mixture of bleach and whatever scent of Fabuloso. Baby is my favoite. Can’t seem to find it here without going to GwiMexico…I mean Gwinnett!
I love Gain…it smells so good then I use the fabric softner Suavecito…don’t judge me…I grew up on it! Just like Coco Rico soda….gosh I miss bodegas!

The first time I was selling my house I cleaned it with Fabulosa. They were talking about it on V103 with such praise that I went and bought some. I couldn’t read all of the directions and never knew I was suppose to dilute it. I had a comment card on the table when people came looking at my house. Came home one day and the card said “you’re house stinks.” Haven’t used it since (even though I used it full strength). Even lil leggs came out her room saying what are you using, it’s strong!!
