Mix and mingle in Atlanta
It’s been a super busy week with about 20 different events going on in the city! It’s one of the many reasons I love Atlanta. I went to a film festival, listened to live hip hop music, Nina Simone tribute that was a spoken word/art event and singles mixer! I am exhausted as that sounds but I had a wonderful time running around town. I will tell you about the events in more detail next week.
On Tuesday, I braved the crowd and ventured to Buckhead to attend the 13th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase the Havana Club in Atlanta. The event was hosted by R&B crooner Lloyd and DJ Drama, the showcase featured performances by hip-hop heir apparent Drake and Atlanta-bred Travis Porter.
One of the exciting moments for me was when BMI Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations Catherine Brewton and members of Organized Noize and Goodie Mob presented rapper/producer Big Boi with the Legends of ATL Award. I am a HUGE OutKast fan, so it was great to see Bib Boi aka Sir Luscious Left Foot!
After I stopped pouting about being in a club on a Tuesday night, I relaxed a bit and had a great time catching up with my friend “SuperStar.” We mingled around as she caught up with friends, including one of the BMI representatives. Let me tell you, there are a lot of perks to knowing people in high places! He was kind enough to help us throughout the evening and kept us posted on Drake’s E.T.A. on stage.
The crowd was getting bigger and bigger, and it was getting later and later. I have been wanting to see Drake perform live since the buzz about him began. Just when I was feeling too old and too irritated to endure that crowd, Drake came on stage. I was pretty impressed by his stage presence. He worked the crowd and really did his thing. I get why there was so much industry buzz about him.
It ended up being a really great event that made me almost fall back in love with hip hop again. One thing I noticed about the crowd that night was that it was pretty diverse. I know I felt older *cough* then the average attendee, but the truth is there were people there of all ages.
When you go out, are you mindful of the age range of people? For the younger readers, do you prefer to hang out at events with people in your age/demographic? How can you tell when an event is geared toward you?
Are there certain places or events that you totally rule out because you know that the crowd won’t be your scene? Is it a good idea to discount any place you have a preconceived notion about? I actually met an older man, in the music industry while we were in line. He was pretty cool and not African American, so I would not necessarily have expected to swap business cards with someone like him that night. Which is my point. Do we mix and mingle with an open mind?

2. Clarity
3. Color
4. Cut
Remember #2 is equally as important as #1. A semi-flawed diamond (a little cloudy) may cost less, but won’t be worth it in the end. Clarity makes it sparkle!!!!!

SWISS..I know right? I mean when I go to buy rings they NEVER have my size. It is a big shock if they have a 5. I have skinny wrists too. When I buy my dance jewelry from the Indian stores they are amazed that I am one size up from kid size. They always are amazed and say that with my height and size (my T & A) I shoudl have bigger wrists and fingers. Go figure!I saw my inner Skinny Chick is dying to get out!

Larry has been married about 7 times,spending an average of what for a ring? for a celeb like him,say 100,000k.thats almost a mil for a rings alone..hope he has good retirement money.
Ed McMon died broke,cldnt pay his mortgage and had been married 3 or so times…..

and the worst part for some broke guys,they buy her a 15 k ring,they divorce after 3 years,she wears that 15k on her middle finger after that, and then dates and courts other dudes,hoping and waiting for another dude to put YET another 15K ring,if not better and pricier on the same finger AGAIN!

Melo – You know I’m messing with you!! You actually are being quite sensible. Supposedly the rule is 2 to 3 months salary should be spent on a ring.
I believe in doing everything within ones means. It’s possible to have quite a lovely ring for a lot less than 15K, and I’m one who knows good jewelry. And you don’t have to go strictly traditional either – I knew a lady that got a pearl wedding ring. She hated diamonds, but loved pearls. I’ve seen some gorgeous gold bands with intricate carvings and stones.
But it makes absolutely no sense to go in debt over something like that. And it’s about where you put your priorities. I’ve known extremely wealthy people that just had plain gold bands. The ring was just not a priority.

@kimmie…i agree that it makes no sense to go into a debt over an engagement ring. i have already told my love that i’m not trying to be all blingy…lol. it’s about us sharing a life together and me have a symbol of being his “intended.” truth be told, i don’t even wear jewelry except my silver bangles and earrings. so i want my engagement/wedding ring to be the only jewelry on my hands.:)

I may be one of the few women on the planet that is not really into rings like that. Yeah, I would certainly appreciate a nice big o’ pretty expensive little bauble to show off to the world.
But…um. well, long as I have his ring perched on my finger, the only real request that I have associated with it is that the ring be white gold, the love last a lifetime and the relationship be solid.

kinder – I don’t wear a lot of jewelry either, especially rings, so that ring would probably be the only one. I have a birthstone ring and a few others I wear occasionally on my right hand, but nothing on my left.
I love beautiful jewelry, but I’m allergic to most of it, so it has to be good stuff! I keep it simple & classy!

A good friend of mine bought his lady a ring from a jeweler at the Apparel Mart for 6K. The same ring goes for double at the regular jewelry retailers.
