My music, my muse

This week I had the opportunity to attend Janelle Monae’s album listening party at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel. If you haven’t heard of her before, she is one of those musicians who still understands that music is art.  Her latest project, The Arch Android is another example of what happens when a talented singer has a unique vision. She puts a lot into her songs and performances. I had a really great time hanging out with my cool friend Karsh and meeting new friends Brittany and Mark.

The crowd was mellow and eclectic with a nice mix of ages. We all watched Sean “Puffy” Combs’ on video from Paris rave about Janelle Monae’s new project slated for release on May 18.  He said we would not be disappointed and he was right. She had me at the first beat on the first song that was infused with her soulful voice and strong beats.  When the fourth song’s intro had me literally shrieking out loud, I knew that I was officially an Arch Android. This was the song (Cold War) that had a really great production, uptempo, and lyrics that made you stop. “It’s a cold cold war. Do you know what you’re fighting for?”

I’m no music critic, I’m just a fan. I can only tell you to be prepared for quite a ride for this album.  Do you have a favorite artist that you enjoy watching perform live?  It was nice to be surrounded by people who are into the same music.  We felt like one collective music family vibing off the same beats and feeling the energy that Janelle Monae was giving us as she cut  a rug and showed off her moves (love her dancing!).

Have you ever dated someone whose taste in music clashed with yours?  I remember once that a guy I dated insulted my taste in music.  I don’t want to say I dumped him because we had opposing views about music.  I just know that a rude comment about how I needed to “do something about my taste in music” was pretty much the nail in dude’s coffin.  Probably not the most mature move I’ve made but I don’t feel a huge loss.

How do you merge your interests in a new relationships?  Are you open to being exposed to new music, food, etc?

Happy Friday!

I love experiencing different cultures. As a white guy who grew up lower middle class in a small southern town, I’ve been very fortunate to have travelled for 10 years for work. Having those experiences has helped me put my cultural upbringing into perspective.

Relating it to dating: If I meet a woman who’s into rock climbing, I’m going to try it. Who knows, maybe I’m really good and wouldn’t have known it unless I had dated her. Maybe I’ll bring out the runner in her. Plus, it has helped me realize things that I DON’T like that I thought I would.

Morning All,

Favorite artist–Prince. Never had anyone diss my taste in music because I love all kinds of music..especially if it involves a guitar..Something about a guitar. I think the best way to merge interest in a relationship is to respect the other person’s interest. I mean if I meet a guy into ultimate fighting or NASCAR..I am not going to dismiss his interests because I don’t understand them..I will give it a look and then tell him not for me buddy..and go turn on another tv. There is nothing that says two people who like different things can’t gel(today’s word is gel or geling) you just have to respect the difference and keep it moving. Now if the joker doesn’t like football..he might be hitting the bricks. J/K(not really):-)

Speaking of new things, saw Pat Metheny last night, and what a fantastic show! Having an open mind and being willing to experience new and different things, to me, is the key to exciting opportunities.

just know that a rude comment about how I needed to “do something about my taste in music”

A lot of times it’s not what you say, but how you say it. How condescending. Wise, why do you apologize about it not being mature that you dumped dude? You said it was not the only reason you guys broke up. Anyway, he was the immature one, not you.

Oh, Good morning & TGIF!

Good post! First of all, Janelle Monae is FANTASTIC. Absolute artistry.

Secondly, love the question – what do you do when your love interest or friends have a musical taste that clashes with yours. Definitely inspired a follow up blog of my own. I can say this, if you don’t like Janelle Monae, you’re not a good friend of mine!

P.S. – Prince is a JM fan and caught her show in Minneapolis.

Umm this is a hard one.. I saw Prince in the late 80’s with my older Sister and then again at Atlanta Live.. I like Jilly from Philly and the Roots live.. I actually really enjoyed Floetry.. I cant call one cause Parliament still rocks as well as Frankie Beverly and Maze.. Heck I like Grits and Jelly Butter on a Friday night at Vino.. Oh but wait Anita at Chastain was really nice.. I cant call it ya’ll.. I cant.. I just like live music with a Band.. No prerecorded tracks real live music.. Dang and Coldplay at Lakewood, that was one of the best shows ever.. Again I cant call it..

RE: musical taste — I like some pretty obscure stuff, so I’ve grown accustomed to most folks giving me the gas-face when they hear some of the music I like. Mrs. Swiss used to say that she wanted to cut her wrists when subjected to my music in the car… Of course, I also like a lot of more mainstream stuff as well, so I can find a happy medium with most folks & just enjoy the obscure stuff on my own…

In general, though, I tend to purposefully seek out things that are new & different to me, whether it’s food, culture, even people. Just makes life more interesting…

Funny just yesterday the newbie and i were in applebees eating lunch when a song came on and he began singing the words. I jokingly said ummm sir you are not supposed to know the words to that song, we both had a good laugh.

I myself listen to a little bit of everything. I did have an ex who always had something smart to say when i would pop in a beyonce cd, he just thought he was too manly.

I love that TheDude is into music the way that he is. He is a true HipHopHead. When did you fall in love with hiphop? He is always buying music for me. Just this week, I have been introduced to Imelda May and he also bought me Raheem Davaughn’s cd – that I was listening to yesterday.

But what I love most about him is that he is into all genres of music. On his ipod, you can fing everyone from Miles Coltrain to Chris Botti to John Mayer to the O’Jays to Miles Davis to Shirley Ceasar to Guns-N-Roses to Johnny Cash to Brooks and Dunn…and I could go on.

I *thought* I was musically diverse but he has given me a whole course in *Music Appreciation* and I appreciate it.

I love music, and all kinds, especially in it’s pure form – a live band, quartet, orchestra. Music was very much appreciated in my household growing up. Dad loved jazz, real jazz. I took classical piano lessons for 10 years. Attending concerts, especially at Chastain, is one of my favorite things in the world to do. I only pay my money to see top acts – Prince, MJ, Stevie Wonder, Boney James, Sade, Jill & Maxwell coming up. Love neo-soul! Since I am used to the best, so American Idol has never really interested me. I use time & money to see them after they’ve made it, sorry, that’s me.

As for someone having different tastes or interests than me – that’s a great thing and definitely allows for growth if both parties are at least open to experiencing the interest of the other. If you’re closed-minded & shut out my interests completely or put them down, you are insulting me. We would not be together.

SWISS…You are a complete NUT!

Now every since I can remember I grew up listening to an ecletic mixture of music. If I made a playlist and named it…”The Soundtrack of My Life”..OMG it would have styles like Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Hip Hop, R&B, Opera, Reggae, Soca, Rock, Heavy Metal, World Music (Arabic, African, Cape Verdian, Brazilian, etc),Pop, Classical and Trip Hop! When you ride in the car with me or come to my place..you never what you will hear. I like to put my Ipod on shuffle and let it go where it wants. As a performer you have to be open to all types of music…it maximizes your style. My friends call me JukeBox because I can hear pretty much any song and know it….title and artist. Any guys who dates me already know I am weird and will not change. So they can adapt or keep it moving.

Just because I like what I like and you like something different, it doesn’t mean that what you like is better. Just different.

And if you want to put me down or turn your nose up because I like “Scrub Da Ground” or because grilled hotdogs are my favorite food or whatever, you *IS* not gone be in my space very long.

I am old enough and grown enough to be secure in my choices, but at the same time, I am not so closed minded that I am not open to trying new things. However, if you rub me the wrong way or try to make me feel less than because of your opinions about the state of my *culture or class*…eh – kick rocks.

@Swiss..I will have to look at the bootleg at home..but I will def check it out. Yep if I shuffle my ipod anything will come up and my son is learning to love music the same way. Right now he is into old school hip-hop so he knows all the words to Run-DMC “You be illin”, and Kool Moe Dee’s the Wild Wild West, Whodini..the boy walks round like he has discovered something new!

He actually sleeps with the radio on tuned to old school music so one day he was humming…Adore by Prince..(one of my more prouder moments as a parent)..wait did I just type the words old school hip hop when talking about Run-DMC??? Lawd it has come to this!!
