Are first impressions reliable?

Have you ever been out and met someone who you instantly didn’t like? The person just rubbed you the wrong way because they said or did something that turned you off.  When that person later turns out to be someone you become friends with or date, you have to wonder how reliable our first impressions really are.

So often we seem to make so many snap judgments and quick superficial scans and we actually rule a potential romance out based on this.  When you think of your best relationships or closest friendships, do you remember what you first thought about that person when you met?

Do you think your first impressions on the dating scene gets you a second look or makes people steer clear?

HAPPY MONDAY! How was your weekend? Did you have any first impressions (good or bad) this weekend?

Update: Attention music lovers! Janelle Monae is in the city! She has an album listening party and performance tonight.

yeah I have had that happen where my first impression of someone wasn’t always spot on.
For example, I worked with someone that would get on my last nerve.
Somehow or another, this person ended up being a cool friend of mine.
I value his friendship.
Would I ever date him? Hmmmnn…. probably not :
A) He’s married and I’m not a homewrecker
B) As I grown to know him better, there are traits that he has that would cause a conflict if I were ever to date someone like him
C) he’s married

Morning all!

Hmm…I don’t know if I’ve made any snap judgements that turned out to be wrong. Let me think a little longer. Anyone whom I didn’t like upon meeting, I still don’t like. I probably didn’t spend any real time digging below the surface tho!

My weekend was great! I was off on Friday. I took the honey bun to lunch and then hung with his family for a bit. Then I met up with some friends to see “Why Did I Get Married Too” —> :? Saturday went to a lovely bridal shower and watched the Final Four. Sunday was church then grubbing at my faux hubby’s house!

IHello Ms. Lurker! I hope all is well with you!

I try not to make snap judgements about anyone when I frst meet them. I tend to sit back and listen. Sooner or later their true colors will show. I have met a few people who rubbed me the wrong way and later we became friends!

Morning blog peeps… (working on my 3rd cup o’ java already…)

Hmmm… Actually, I think first impressions are usually pretty accurate. Trying to think of an instance where I’ve been totally off-base about someone… Then again, maybe like ARed I just stick with my first impression & never really give a 2nd chance to make a first impression…

Loving the spring weather (finally!) — had the top off on the Jeep all weekend long, kicked a little arse on the tennis court & did a little grilling & chilling at the new swiss estate:-) About as good as it gets in my book… :-)

First impressions. The woman I am in love with, I really despised when I first met her and thought she was full of games. Not anymore though. I just had a block up for the relationship area of my life, I was not receptive to anything that approached me in that manner in a meaningful way. So, I kept blinders on off sort and only saw the negative.

Morning
I’m pretty receptive to people, so it takes alot to “rub” me the wrong way. You never know what’s going on with someone, so I try to make it a point not to characterize another person by their surface interactions with me.

I am, my weekend was great. I was done with work Friday by noon, so I had some time to explore and play. It was so beautiful in Florida that I flew her down to be with me. We both loved it. We vacation there often and decided to come up with a plan so that we will both be living there together within a few years.

I’m sure your mother or grandmother told you “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” or something along those lines. Being superficially judgmental is actually a bad first impression on your own account.

I have a tendency, right or wrong, to pay more attention to people who make a bad first impression. Most often, they’re just a bit rough around the edges, a bit socially inept perhaps, but generally more up-front, truthful and trustworthy than average. It’s the ones that are obviously practiced in the good first impression that seem disingenuous to me, and thus met with my suspicion. Your mileage may vary.

Morning ALL!!

yup. the weather is mighty fine these days :) i’m gonna ditto 007 8:53. i can’t say i’ve ever formed a negative first impression of anyone. i sit back and let things work themselves out for a while before i decide if i’m interested in knowing more. however, i do believe that the first impression i give tends to be negative. i prefer to watch and listen instead of just warming right up to folks from jump …. so that makes me seem unfriendly.

I have had good first impressions that were wrong and bad first impressions that were right.

I know that good first impressions can hide a multitude of character flaws and faults that if you knew upfront you would run quickly in the other direction.

I have a tendency to not give those who make a bad first impression the opportunity to change that impression. That’s because I don’t care to waste my life on possible lost causes. And really, there are enough people in the world that one bad impression from someone who I don’t know anyway is not going to make that big of a difference in my life (especially if it’s just someone that I am meeting in passing.)

First impressions can be hit or miss on in terms of assessment, but alter the environment or situation slightly and that could completely change the outcome of the impression. There have been people I disliked at first impression for whatever reason but they evolved into a really good friend, associate, etc. The thing was that I kept my initial dislike internally and it didn’t manifest into an adversarial relationship. That decision turned out great for me because the person I consider my career mentor made a less than stellar impression on me upon our first meeting.

Conversely, some women that have made a favorable initial impression after getting to know them lost some luster which led me to realize that I misread the initial encounter.

Do you think your first impressions on the dating scene gets you a second look or makes people steer clear?

Both; my persona, physicality, and character may appeal to some while leave others unimpressed, it’s just the nature of the beast.

Good morning beautiful blog people!

And really, there are enough people in the world that one bad impression from someone who I don’t know anyway is not going to make that big of a difference in my life (especially if it’s just someone that I am meeting in passing.)

Amen SCool! I get so sick of folks whining about missing out & giving folks 2nd chances and whatnot! Even if you make a bad 1st impression on me, if you were meant to be part of my life in some way, it’s gonna happen! In the meantime I’m not wasting my time crying over spilled milk. I’m not hard up for friends!

With that being said, I go with my gut, or intuition or listen to God’s voice in my ear. That has never steered me wrong. Whenever I’ve gone against that, things have not turned out well. And I’m not talking just about when a person has made a bad impression eithr. There have been times when folks have made a good impression, but my little voice is telling me walk away anyway. When I’ve ignored the voice in those instances, things have not gone well.

So now, I’ve learned to trust my instincts.

Kimme, flour about a quarter cup, a bout a quarter tsp of salt, some fresh ground black pepper and some oregano, chicken breast boned and skinless..umm four table spoons olive oil, some Marsala wine..I am generous with it but no more than a glass, about two handfuls of mushrooms, a half cup of chicken stock and a half cup of sherry and a half of lemon. Mix together the flour, salt, oregano, and pepper. Beat the chicken breasts with the flat side of your meat mallet softly. Roll the chicken in your mixture. On medium-high, heat the olive oil and brown the chicken…both sides. Then put chicken onto a plate. Pour wine into the oil and warm. Mix in the mushrooms, chicken stock and juice of the lemon..flip chicken over to get it well coated with the sauce. Simmer for 10 minutes

Afternoon all,
Do you think your first impressions on the dating scene gets you a second look or makes people steer clear? First impressions definitely get you a second look or not. If you make a good one, you will not be so forgettable. I have had some guys who rubbed me the wrong way in an initial meeting and later were able to redeem themselves and show me another side. But still, you look for signs of the unimpressionable behavior/attitude to reveal its ugly head again.

We invited two-single friends to hang out with is Saturday for a family BBQ at the park and my BFF had to literally cuss out one of JT’s co-workers!! This guy is very crass and direct in everything he says- plus, his comments all ended up being “sexual” in nature. After 30 mins of this, I was ready to tell him to leave. He later got drunk and tried to hit on my sister, after my friend would not entertain his foolishness anymore. He later spoke to JT and said, “he didn’t get why they both blew him off”. LMBO!!! He will be single for a long time if he didn’t get why!!! I think he may be a border line-alchy too, now I am rethinking him being one of our hostesses at the wedding. I can see one of my cousins going to jail if this fool says something out of line to their wives or girlfriends.
Other than that, we had a fun & busy weekend!! Played kickball after we grubbed on BBQ at the park. Sunday-went to the sunrise Easter service at church, Put in two offers on homes in our area, and drove to Columbus and back to meet the future-in-laws to drop off one of the kiddies for Spring Break. Overall great weekend!!

Speaking of first impressions, we went to look at a house in Snellville in very nice neighborhood (250K & up), the house was a foreclosure selling for about $150K. We pulled up and stopped in front of this very nice home because our GPS signal got too low and we couldn’t find the house. This lady pulls up in her Lex and says “can I help you?” with a very snobbish attitude. She then proceeded to tell us there were only 2 homes in the neighborhood and proceeded to tell us that we were parked in front of her house.
In hind sight, I can see how that would look to her to see 2 big black SUV’s sitting in front of your house…but this lady was a trip. She even walked down the street to house when we were there with our agent to see how much the house was selling for and asked our home inspector friend how much would the repairs would cost. She then proceeded to do her own tour of the home and stepped to another prospective buyer that pulled up with their agent.

I can see both sides of this. As a homeowner in that neighborhood, you have to be concerned with the selling prices of other houses. If that house sells for 150K, then her 250K+ house comes down in value. If the value of the houses in that neighborhood start to come down, then other “less desireable” people will be able to afford houses in that neighborhood too, and the quality of life there could suffer. It has happened to lots of neighborhoods in Gwinnett. What you hope is that that neighbor is protective about EVERYBODY who ventures into that neighborhood, and not just certain people.

I won’t front, There are certain types that I don’t want in my neighborhood either but I am not going to resort to tactics to prevent them from not moving in.

There was a lady that moved in and all I thought was oh, there goes the neighborhood. I was nice to her children but I really didn’t want her in my neighborhood (she was ghetto).
Well lucky me, she moved. I think she was more of a renter as opposed to a buyer.

Now I have found that in certain communties the undesireables are less likely to move in (or stay) because of this lovely word I like to call HOA.
If you do not abide by the rules of the HOA, they will put your put out.

I’ve seen places that were realitevly cheap due to the housing market so anyone could afford to live their but the neighborhoods go down because they don’t have an HOA managing it.
Things I’ve seen when I was househunting : broken window, broken garages, missing shutters, etc..
Undesireables may think hey it’s cheap I can afford the mortgage but they don’t factor in the costs of the upkeep.

It’s not just about the values, per se. You want to know, at those values, who will be able to afford to move into your neighborhood. Come on ya’ll. If you bought a house in a neighborhood for 400k, then you don’t want to live around people who can only afford a 200k house. Otherwise, you would have moved into the 200k neighborhood in the first place. I’m sure JtJ would be a phenomenal neighbor, we all know that’s not always the case. Btw, I’m not discounting the fact that said neighbor was an ashhole with a bias against those of us with a darker hue. Infamous got it right though. That ITP real estate is where it’s at. Atlanta, like most major urban areas, is undergoing major regentrification.

That lady did not run us off, our home inspector came with us and took a brief look at the house and found rotted wood in the formal living room floor hidden under the carpet and went up top to the roof and saw signs of moisture damage and he believed that water was seeping through and coming into the wall in the formal living room..hence the damp floor and rotted wood. Poppa I like the power that the Assembly has given HOA’s in regards to foreclosing on a property to get dues.
Negative reserves and the whole community goes to poo I don’t care how nice of a property it is.

However, in some areas, the HOA can be overbearing.
For example, my father lives in golf course community in Phoenix which is probably 90% republican (we are not in case you were wondering).
In his community, they give you 24hrs to have the rocks spread out on your garden area (they use rocks for lawn instead of grass in phoenix) or you will be fined.
within 23hrs and 59 mins they were already knocking at father’s door to inquire about the rocks not being spread out.
My father explained that they had just moved in and the rocks had just been delivered but the very fact they couldn’t wait a few more hours irked my parents.
Now stuff like that, is an example of power hungry HOA.

He lost my respect in his lack of testicles in dealing with Rush. Rush has more power in his position than Michael has in his position. He let it happen. JC Watts figured out that he was being used. Maybe Michael Steele will one day.

I have much more respect for Herman Cain than Michael Steele. They both are black conservatives. Some people have been trying to get Mr. Cain to run for Governor, but I don’t see it happening.

Taxes are going up every year and you cant afford to live there on a low income because the taxes are gonna kill you.. Is it right.. No but its happening. Fulton taxes are going thru the roof and etc.. You either can stay here or not..

City of Atlanta is getting out of the project business. Economics have made it such that way. Capitol Homes had a case about 10-15 years ago where a baby was killed by a cockroach crawling into her mouth while she was asleep. That made it imperative that maintenance expenses increase. There were other cases against the Housing Authority. Maintenance costs and legal costs mount up. Being funded by tax dollars leaves the housing authority not unlimited amount of cash to keep up the housing obligations and the legal obligations.

Money drives everything in America (not just here in Atlanta).

czBrat that has been one of the few areas where regentrification has been REALLY slow to affect. I haven’t really figured out why. Given it’s proximity to downtown and the fact that it’s a university area, it seems like it would have changed a long time ago. Maybe some of the other residents can weigh in on this one.

Like how Dunwoody and Sandy Springs separated themselves from Atlanta. Sort of wierd in the case of Sandy Springs though since Sandy Springs extends from Roswell down to Buckhead. Another case of money. Sandy Springs pooled money and bought all the parks in within their borders from Fulton County. So, now their Parks and Rec. Sandy Springs has to watch it. They are a bit too agressive on trying to enact ordinances that eliminate a group that they don’t want in the city. They have ordinances that borderline US Constitutional violations. They have a few that blantantly target apartment home occupants that they don’t want more specifically latinos.

The one ordinance about having a certain number of people per bathroom can only be legitimized by saying that it is about not overwhelming the plumbing (infrastructure). However, we know who is being targeted. My Con Law professor even has been contacted by a group interested in suing Sandy Springs in regards to the ordinance.

There has always been an issue between North DeKalb and South DeKalb. It was really evident when Cynthia McKinney was in office. Many repub cross party lines in primaries to vote her out. Most of them were in North DeKalb (North of Memorial)

Counties can’t split without a full state vote. Look at the fight to break north Fulton back into the old Milton County that it used to be. Even with this Republican led General Assembly, it has failed to make it to a vote.

After the General Assembly vote, if passed, the citizens of the area get to vote.

Good afternoon. Have no energy to read all of this, but if still on first impressions I have this to say….

I remember meeting this guy while at a gf’s apt. Her boyfriend had stopped by with another guy. I didn’t have a car at the time and when I realized his friend was leaving I asked if he would drop me off at the subdivision a few blocks up. He immediately said no. I asked why not knowing he was passing it due to comments made earlier in the day. He said he didn’t feel like stopping. I couldn’t understand this nor would I let it go. He said I was abrasive and wouldn’t take no for an answer. I couldn’t accept it because he was basically driving by my front door. I couldn’t understand why someone wouldn’t help another out with such a simple request. Hell he could have come to a slow stop and pushed my butt out the door. 32 years later we are very good friends.

I stayed home sick in bed this past beautiful weekend. I was miserable each time that sun winked at me through the blinds.

Ok, w/o going back reading any posts, what is the topic??

@ i am… — That’s the approach to take — especially in this market. “Contingent” offers don’t give you much negotiating power, but if you’re ready to put the cash on the table, you can play hardball. Mrs. Swiss & I were fortunate to each sell our individual places (both closed within a week after the honeymoon), then got a short-term lease on an apt. while we looked for a new place. Of course, we were looking at mostly bank-owned properties, so contingent offers were not really an option, anyway.

I’ve heard of these ordinances. They have been particularly aggressive, and it’s been “successful”. That area right right inside the perimeter where they put the new Target shopping center used to be almost exclusively latino, but not nearly so now. They tore many of those apartments down, renovated the others, and built a brand new elementary school.

Splitting DeKalb would have some major implications. What part would stay DeKalb? After all, the thought is the North DeKalb has majority of the money. That affects things like Grady Hospital funding, it is run by Fulton and DeKalb. MARTA has DeKalb input and gets DeKalb money.

Republicans haven’t done much with their power in the General Assembly. No property tax reform as promised. They haven’t gotten rid of the state income tax as they were talking about and be more like Florida (which has no state income tax). Actually, I think it’s more a rural thing than a regional thing. I’ve been to rural areas in the north & seen the exact same attitudes, just with a different accent. Maybe not quite as overt as in the south, but it’s still there…

at swiss: you know what I do remember an incident up north that made me made as hell.

My friend who is Puerto Rican (looks white) and I were headed home from someplace and we took a wrong town and ended up in this town that was the next town over from us.
Lets say my town has 10 black people, you could say this town has -1.
And this was a town that everyone would whisper about :don’t be caught by yourself at night.

SO while we are trying to find our way home, I found a street that I new ran into my town. It was pitch black (I know sounds like a ghost story, huh) and nobody was on the rode but us.
Out of nowhere we are pulled over by the cops and interrogated.
But what burns me up more was how they thought my friend was white and after I produced a valid license, valid insurance car, they ran my tag and it came up clean, they had the nerve to ask her if she was okay (like I kidnapped her or something). I’m a female (straight one too)!!! they usually ask that question if you are a dude caught parking with a lady (don’t ask how I know)

This is true. I’ve lived pretty much in every region of the country, and once you get outside the major metropolitan areas, they’re pretty much all the same.

Oh, so now it’s Elin’s fault that Tiger is a ho?!
Every one of us has a vice or temptation that, if thrown in our face every day of our lives, we give in to it. Some people just don’t need to be married. Tiger is the most recognized and wealthy athlete in the world. Everywhere he goes (airport, hotel, grocery store, bar, club, etc) there are hoards of women throwing azz at him on a daily basis. Now consider your worst temptation, and imagine it being presented to you every single day when you left the house, on your way to work, when you got to work, when you left work, on your from work to the garage where your car is parked, at the gas station, at the club, at every restaurant you ate at, at every function you ever attend, in every country in the world. You’re telling me that you wouldn’t give in to that temptation even one time?

@DigThat…if it’s fake, it’s not hospitality. It’s making someone feel comfortable by masking your true feelings where loved ones will find their bodies on the side of the road swarming with buzzards. I remember leaving class many nights riding Marta thinking “this person sitting next to me may hate my guts simply because of the color of my skin and may blow my head off before I reach my destination.” There were so many “undercover” haters when I first arrived here it was truly scary. I like those northerners who “shoot from the hip” thereby giving you no reson to second guess them!

Dreams:

Maybe this may be different since I am female but I’m scorpio so yes temptation can be hard for me.
But if I was going places without my spouse around (I’m not talking my normal 9-5 I’m talking places that require me to hop on a plane and be gone for days, weeks, months, you get the point) I would find it hard to resist temptation.

Let’s say I worked a regular 9-5 and saw my spouse daily but unless the reason was medical related could not perform or give me “lovin”
I would find it very hard to resist temptation. I would contemplate divorce before I did that but if their were children involved that loved their daddy and he was a great man except in the sexual area, divorce may be hard to do.

@Iam ~ my take is just the opposite.
Leggs I think I line up with Iam’s thinking on this one. Northerners (I am one myself) tend to have this socially elitist thinking, as if they are too enlightened to be racist. So, they mask their racism with subtleties that you could probably never prove in court. It’s a very patronizing type of liberalism, but it’s just as damaging a form of racism as the hard-nosed blatant conservatism that’s here in the south.

Dreams – I agree with everything you said about Tiger & temptation. Yes, some folks don’t need to be married. Yes, being most recognized all over the world & having it thrown it your face, especially if that’s your weakness & you’ve been sheltered like Tiger was, I actually would be surprised if he NEVER stepped out even once. But while I do believe a spouse can do things to make stepping out easier (or harder) to happen, lets put the blame where it belongs – on Tiger. We don’t know, he might not have even WANTED Elin to travel everywhere with him. He may have wanted her to stay home with the kids. @Tiger??
On rehab: “I was in there for 45 days and it was to take a hard look at myself, and I did, and I’ve come out better. I’m certainly a much better person for it than I was going in. Does that mean I’m ever going to stop doing that? No, I’ve got to still continue with my treatment. And that’s not going to stop in the near future for sure.” Asked what the treatment was for, Woods said: “That’s personal.”

Does that mean I’m ever going to stop doing that? No, I’ve got to ……..????
