Are first impressions reliable?

Have you ever been out and met someone who you instantly didn’t like? The person just rubbed you the wrong way because they said or did something that turned you off.  When that person later turns out to be someone you become friends with or date, you have to wonder how reliable our first impressions really are.

So often we seem to make so many snap judgments and quick superficial scans and we actually rule a potential romance out based on this.  When you think of your best relationships or closest friendships, do you remember what you first thought about that person when you met?

Do you think your first impressions on the dating scene gets you a second look or makes people steer clear?

HAPPY MONDAY! How was your weekend? Did you have any first impressions (good or bad) this weekend?

Update: Attention music lovers! Janelle Monae is in the city! She has an album listening party and performance tonight.

you could exchange Ohio for AL, GA, etc, made no difference.
This is true. I’ve lived pretty much in every region of the country, and once you get outside the major metropolitan areas, they’re pretty much all the same.

Oh, so now it’s Elin’s fault that Tiger is a ho?!
Every one of us has a vice or temptation that, if thrown in our face every day of our lives, we give in to it. Some people just don’t need to be married. Tiger is the most recognized and wealthy athlete in the world. Everywhere he goes (airport, hotel, grocery store, bar, club, etc) there are hoards of women throwing azz at him on a daily basis. Now consider your worst temptation, and imagine it being presented to you every single day when you left the house, on your way to work, when you got to work, when you left work, on your from work to the garage where your car is parked, at the gas station, at the club, at every restaurant you ate at, at every function you ever attend, in every country in the world. You’re telling me that you wouldn’t give in to that temptation even one time?

@DigThat…if it’s fake, it’s not hospitality. It’s making someone feel comfortable by masking your true feelings where loved ones will find their bodies on the side of the road swarming with buzzards. I remember leaving class many nights riding Marta thinking “this person sitting next to me may hate my guts simply because of the color of my skin and may blow my head off before I reach my destination.” There were so many “undercover” haters when I first arrived here it was truly scary. I like those northerners who “shoot from the hip” thereby giving you no reson to second guess them!

Thanks, LURKER, I guess on the first offer and your second recommendation.

Dreams:

Maybe this may be different since I am female but I’m scorpio so yes temptation can be hard for me.
But if I was going places without my spouse around (I’m not talking my normal 9-5 I’m talking places that require me to hop on a plane and be gone for days, weeks, months, you get the point) I would find it hard to resist temptation.

Let’s say I worked a regular 9-5 and saw my spouse daily but unless the reason was medical related could not perform or give me “lovin”
I would find it very hard to resist temptation. I would contemplate divorce before I did that but if their were children involved that loved their daddy and he was a great man except in the sexual area, divorce may be hard to do.

Go head start with the judging comments (only GOD can judge me) but I’m human and I’m honest.

we have to keep in mind that a man’s sexual appetite is high!!! they don’t want it once a f’kn week, they want it everyday. if i’m working everyday, cooking, cleaning, kids, everyday, even on w/e and not on purpose forgetting about my man’s needs . . .

get it?

@Iam ~ my take is just the opposite.
Leggs I think I line up with Iam’s thinking on this one. Northerners (I am one myself) tend to have this socially elitist thinking, as if they are too enlightened to be racist. So, they mask their racism with subtleties that you could probably never prove in court. It’s a very patronizing type of liberalism, but it’s just as damaging a form of racism as the hard-nosed blatant conservatism that’s here in the south.

@Leggs- You are not talking about Southerners. You are talking about everywhere USA when talking about craziness. Its just that in the south we can still speak and be cordial and go on about our business. Hospitality is just the friendly treatment or reception of guests OR strangers.

Dreams – I agree with everything you said about Tiger & temptation. Yes, some folks don’t need to be married. Yes, being most recognized all over the world & having it thrown it your face, especially if that’s your weakness & you’ve been sheltered like Tiger was, I actually would be surprised if he NEVER stepped out even once. But while I do believe a spouse can do things to make stepping out easier (or harder) to happen, lets put the blame where it belongs – on Tiger. We don’t know, he might not have even WANTED Elin to travel everywhere with him. He may have wanted her to stay home with the kids. He’s a fabulous golfer, but 14+ skanks, sans protection sometimes, yeah he’s human, but he’s a ho.

I don’t see it as a north or southern thing. It is a people thing. Not confined to any area.

Former GA governor Lester Maddox closed his restaurant to keep from serving black folks. That phenomenon has no bounds. I’ve been to Boston and felt like their interest wasn’t genuine.

Don’t get me started on Salt Lake City…..

Being cordial can happen both ways. It just depends on how the people involved were raised.

Dreams – I agree with everything you said about Tiger and temptation. But I think we need to put the blame where it belongs – on Tiger. I really don’t think Elin following him everywhere he went would have changed much – just made it a LITTLE harder for him to cheat. In fact, it probably would have made it more of a challenge, therefore more exciting!

That’s because it wasn’t. lol I grew up there, and in many ways, it was worst than most stereotypes of the south. Actually, in some of his writings, Dr. King noted that during his trips across the country northerners tended to be much more hostile toward him.

i would love to know who’s idea was it most of the time for her and kids to stay behind. She was a nanny by profession, so she was used to being at home with kids all the time. I doubt anyone had to suggest that. Beautiful There’s nothing, I repeat nothing, that Elin could have done to stop Tiger from cheating. All her following around might have changed HOW he cheated, but not IF. It’s like thinking the state of the art security will keep out all thieves. It won’t. If someone wants your stuff, they’ll find a way to get it. If someone wants to cheat, then they’ll find a way to do it, even if you’re tailing them like private I.

Beautiful I didn’t say anywhere that Elin was at fault. Not sure where you picked that up in my posts. If you think you can stop your next “boo” from cheating by following him everywhere, then you’re definitely not more right than me. If he does NOT cheat, it’s because he wasn’t going to anyway, not because of your Inspector Gadget methods. If he’s going to cheat, there’s nothing you can do to stop that either.
