Heating things up

Food can be an integral part of the dating process.   At some point, we are either mingling or getting to know one another over food.  Cooking great food is also a great way to add spice (pun intended) to the regular, run of the mill date activities.

I recruited my fabulous new gal pal Chef Bren Herrera to help us navigate the joys of cooking and dating.  She is a fellow blogger who recently wrote about one of her clients thinking outside the box for a non-traditional date idea. He hired her to prepare a special meal for a special lady.  I have to say, there is something about a personal chef that can add instant wow factor to a date!

Chef Bren

Photo: Shannon McCollumn

I asked Chef Bren how cooking could heat things up for a non-traditional date:

1. Cooking on a date will show both guy and gal that you’re atypical and think outside the box! Who like movies and dinner dates! So, so passé! It’s 2010.

2. You can totally spoon-feed each other while “tasting” what you’re making. That makes for an intended sexy moment, without being forceful or offensive.

3. If you’re looking for a life-long mate that can cook, this is the test!! How willing are they to break out the cutting board and knives and mince garlic(which will make your breath stinky, but that’s another test of his/her real interest)? If they’re down for it, chances are they are conscious of budgeting, their health and quality time at home.

4. If the food is good, you’ve sealed the deal and a 2nd date is in order.

Well, she makes a pretty convincing argument. What do you think? Would cooking a meal prepared by the two of you not impress the socks (yes…just the socks) off of you?

Have you tried it before? What would you do if you showed up to your date’s place to find the meal waiting to be cooked.  Would you be impressed and turned on a little (Am I the only one thinking of the film 9 1/2 weeks right now? Just me? Ok.)

Would you *ahem* go with the flow and roll up your sleeves? As far as non-traditional dates go, this would definitely be outside the norm.  It would definitely be a memorable night.  I won’t forget the night younger guy brought all these ingredients to my place.  I left to run an errand and when I walked back in, I was shocked to find dinner was done. Then he fed me. No seriously, he literally cooked and fed me. You’ve got to admire those younger dudes.

Chef Bren said that a male client’s favorite dish is the spicy seared scallops in honey with a mango and cilantro relish. That sounds amazing! Do you have an amazing recipe that would be ideal for date nights? What dish do you use to impress the ladies/men?

He probably felt like he had been in a headlock when he cooked all that food and didn’t hit. Because the condom falling out is a clear indication he thought he would.

Average piece of salmon takes about 17 mins — best way to tell is to take a fork and pierce the flesh open. You can tell from the firmness and the color; less pink and more white.

I agree with Rell, cooking and definitely feeding are not for first dates. Or even 2nd or 3rd. Those are the tricks you keep up your sleeve for someone you have established dating with.

And I agree with whoever mentioned about the soul food. For one thing “soul food” is quite heavy. And when in an instance that we are “heating things up” lighter foods in my opinion work much better. They don’t leave you so much with the itis. And another reason “soul food” is out is because the sexiness of cooking is in trying new things. Experimenting and teasing the palate. It adds a bit of spiciness to it. Heck we can get fried chicken and mac-n-cheese pretty much anywhere.

Now if the idea is to fill him up and put him out, then yeah likes get soul/country with it. Smothered pork chops, biscuits, gravy, collards, scalloped potatoes.

And cooking together gives you time to talk and share.

Pasta with light sauces are always a hit.

Another plus to cooking together is the smell of certain spices is an aphrodisiac. Cinnamon, ginger, vanilla.

Morning Folks!!!

My Mr and I have been spending more time in the kitchen. His meals are simple, so he doesn’t need a sous chef. But when I cook, he helps with chopping veggies. It’s just another way for us to bond and work together.

We haven’t done any of the sexy stuff yet though ;-)

AmRed – Love Groupon and Living Social deals. I said I wasn’t going to buy anymore until I used the ones I had – then messed around and got the belly dance classes.

In other news, my fiance’ is currently at my godson’s “Daddy & Me” day. Normally my godson acts funny when he comes around, but I just got a text that the little one was all smiles when he walked in. I Love that man!!!

Sweet Potato pie is the next thing i want to accomplish, i’m not a pie person per say but my great aunt is the only one who makes it like granny used to so she is going to teach me how to make it so it “lives on” LOL

Cakes are my thing, the newbie mentioned he loves red velvet so should it progress to a higher level i may bake him one ;)

One thing I like is food with heat. A little kick to it. The last time the marido cooked a big meal he made jalapeno cornbread. It was awesome. He knows I love jalapenos. We had some baby backs that he had marinated for an entire day, then smoked out on the grill with that “secret” sweet and tangy bbq sauce that makes caramelized on the meat.

I make peach cobbler from scratch…don’t make it often at all because it’s hell rolling out your own dough. I’m like Ared in that it’s hard to cook for one person so I don’t cook nearly as much as I used to. Now that I think of it, I have no idea what I used to cook. lol

Cooking together is very sexy. A man on the grill, and his woman in the kitchen seasoning the meats and preparing the sides makes both parties smile. He’s skinning and grinning marveling at the skills of his woman and she’s doing the same while watching him out the kitchen window.

Love to get in there and mix it up in the kitchen with a babe because it shows how well ya’ll work together. It also opens the door to all kinds of convo topics. “when a guy cooks for a chick and invites her over, do you all believe the Phatty Catty should follow dinner???”

@Slim
I’m not the best person to ask that because I don’t cook, however from reading some of this and from what I have heard then food is not just the way to a man’s heart but clearly to a woman’s heart and panties too. You should ask the men that are chef’s in here or that can cook and routinely do for a woman. It certainly is a romantic gesture, but has Ared just told us it is not a guarantee for the booty.

Those old women coughing & hacking gave me whatever turburcular condition they brought into the office, so I am blogging from home today.

Carlito – Go on with your bad self. I ain’t mad atcha! I bet your Italian self can throw down in that kitchen! Italian cuisine is my favorite by far & I’m not talking just lasagna & spagetti either!

I would not do the cooking at home thing on a first date, or even the first few. I would want is to be a little established, because food, especially good food, cooked together, is definitely a turn-on and I would not want any apprehensions about taking things there!

I’ve had some VERY HOT things happen in the kitchen, that’s all I’m saying!

“when a guy cooks for a chick and invites her over, do you all believe the Phatty Catty should follow dinner?

- this is the problem with most male/female interactions…we always think what do i have to give up…instead of enjoying the moment…or just enjoying the person we are around…its natural for man to want woman and vice versa….it will happen..but the focus kills ANY notion of a romantic encounter..because in the back of her mind…she is thinking…”i bet he think he going to fluck, nope” and in his mind…”i am going to fluck this chick..wait till i break out the cold bananass covered with chocolate”…..ish never works…what does work is this…a basket of chips and a pitcher of margarita…plan D gets them everytime…lol

Morning
Now this is right up my alley. I love to cook. Cornish hen baked and basted with a butter and marsala wine mix, grilled zucchini or yellow squash halves, and a baked whole sweet potato (like a regular baked potato) with honey butter and brown sugar sprinkled on top. Add a Spatlese or an Auslese, and you’re good to go.

@SlimOne ~ I forgot about my peach cobbler. I stated that the only thing I can bake from scratch is my sour cream pound cake. Forgot about the cobbler. The person who taught me how to make it has told me I’ve surpassed her cobbler. What a compliment. I made so many for so many people that I had to stop. It is work rolling out that dough. Note to self: time to dust off the old rolling pin.

Rell, I agree. Things should just happen as they will. There should be no expectations. Just enjoy the moment. Hell by “The Man” used to cook for me and I had my visitor. Because he wasn’t getting any did not make him put less love, heart and effort into the meal. It was about us enjoying each other’s company and a great meal together.
