Need better matches?

After enduring some dating disaster or meeting a host of strange creatures, single people have to get proactive.  We can’t sit by and continue to let bad dates happen to us!  The thing is, it’s not necessarily difficult to attract people to you.

I could probably write a book about how to meet men who are handsome but know it and are arrogant.  I could teach a course on dating men who want all the perks of relationships and marriage but mention the big M word? They disappear faster than Tiger Wood’s sponsors.

The big question is: How do you attract the right people to you? The people you actually want to date past two weeks. The people that want what you want, when you want it.  Impossible? I don’t think so. Challenging? Definitely!

What are ways we can improve our chances of getting better matches?  If you aren’t online dating, you have to meet people more organically.   Is it possible to meet “The One” in a bar?

When you think about your last great date that developed into something substantial, where did you meet? Do you believe that the way you met and how you met made a real difference?

I met my current GF online. Yes, there were alot of whackos, but statistically not any different than the amount of wackos walking down the street. How do I attract better dates? If I focus on being a more attractive date (ALL factors, not just physical and material), then I attract higher quality dates. It’s that simple. Works the same for both genders. Dump the arrogance, be friendly, and you would be surprised what happens.

Good morning,
Meeting “the one” has a lot to do with being patient and having the right attitude about the opposite sex, purpose of “mating up,” about you, and about life in general. Happy people have happy lives; they create events and situations that keeps them happy overall.

The problem today IMO is that every where has become the meet-market. I remember the times when you could just happen to be somewhere, just happen to be doing something and just by chance meet a great person. But now everywhere is “where you go to get a date”. People are going places (i.e. church, the market, the hardware store, the food bank) and/or taking on classes and/or hobbies for the sole intention of meeting Mr. or Ms. Possibility. That’s the problem. Everyone is on the prowl.

IMO the best way to meet the right one is just by chance. And by chance could be someone you have known and developed a true friendship with over the years. (Yeah that’s me. I DO have the best thing going) Or by chance could be by association. Or by frequency of patronage.
Bars, club, social gatherings with the intent to mate are IMO some of the worst places to meet someone when you are looking for a LT endeavor.

Your better match could very well be that person that you deal with day to day. However, if you deal with shady and treacherous individuals you probably need to find new friends.

My marido makes the statement a lot to his cousin that the condition surrounding when and how you meet someone will vastly determine the nature of your relationship.

On one of the Eharmony commercials the lady states that because of her business she was too busy to get out and meet guys. My marido stated that that will be the nature of their relationship. He will find that she is too busy for him. There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting the time and effort into having a lucrative and successive business. However, you have to take the time to live.

I’m with you! Perhaps Bad Timing. I actually “met” a guy @ Publix, i mean we knew each other in high school and even chatted on the phone back then but never “dated”. He was sort of a bad boy then, but we bumped into each other exchanged numbers and so far so good, he has matured and so have I.

I don’t mean to generalize but there are certain places that you are not going to find quality dates. Period. The after parties. The latest up and coming clubs. “The Place to Be” are just not where it is at. Like you stated Diva the guys that are handsome but know it and are arrogant, those guys aren’t hanging out at library. Those that want all the perks of relationships and marriage, they are not gathering at the park or at Brookstone. Those types are usually mixing and mingling wherever the “cameras” are rolling.

There comes a time in our lives as serious adults that we need to get away from having to be in the know or having that guy or girl that runs a close second to Hollywood’s finest. You want someone that is going to treat you right. There are still a lot of people that just don’t know how much of a treasurel that is.

No he may not be rippled like LL Cool J or up on the latest Jay-Z hit, but he has heart. A loving heart. Your best interest at heart.

A daffodil ain’t nothing but a pretty weed. Good for nothing. But a cactus is plant. A plant that capable of providing fodder and protection.

On topic, I’mma agree with Mike P. A lot of what we attract is what we put out. A lot of people that lament being single do so because they are trying to define themselves via a relationship. Be you; do you, and without question, the rest of it will take care of itself.

I don’t think we need better matches. I believe we need more reality checks! You are not going to find your rich mate unless you have a high salary as well. Life can be pretentious! You have to have something to get something. You can play the part but eventually, your true lifestyle will be unveiled. The only suggestion I would make (yes, I’ve done this), is to make that proverbial list. Make a list of your desirable mate. Dump as much as you can on this list even if it doesn’t make sense. Then put an asterisk by the items that are negotiable. The more items that are negotiable on your list, the higher the probability of meeting that wonderful mate.

Downtown, I actually believe that the closer your beginnings and background harmonize the more compatible you will be. Yeah many grow up and make it forgetting and looking down on where they come from. But I believe that the more you can relate to each other’s beginning the better you bond and relationship will be.

Now yeah, you shouldn’t be out there looking for something that you yourself aren’t able to provide. But that again goes back to your background. Just because a person has money doesn’t mean they know how to handle it. But two people that have a beginning or background in being financially wise have a better chance than just two people with similar checkbooks.

The best relationships are the one’s that happened to me when I’m at a good place in life( enjoying my job, in good shape etc.). And consequently, the one’s that have been absolute train wrecks are when I’ve been at a bad place mentally and emotionally and have tried to force things. I’m sure there is some luck in meeting the right person, but I don’t like just leaving things to fate. I feel that when I do things that bring joy in my life, I feel good about myself and that kind of rubs off in my interactions with women. I just prefer a more proactive approach to meeting women than a reactive one.

I will also say a man’s idea of friendship and a woman’s idea of friendship are really different. I think that most women will say that they want their lover to be their best friend, and they’re right in that ideally that is where you want to end up. But in the very beginning, especially in the dating/courtship process; NO woman wants a guy that’s going to treat them like a friend. Sorry ladies, it doesn’t work that way and you know it. Take it from a guy who has been in the dreaded friend zone; trying to get involved with a woman by being her friend rarely works. Guys have to do things and say things that are going to separate themselves from the pack of lukewarm nice guys and the endless supply of jerks.

Hey Lady J, Princess and Kinderbabe!

Hmmmm I think timing is everything and I do believe that one should not go out searching. I like going out having fun and if I meet someone well that is a plus. As for attracting the right people personally I feel you cannot control who are attracted to you, but you can control who you decide to deal with. I listen and note red flags and I bounce if needed.

Rell, exactly. Some folks are more concerned with image than they are with having what or who can truly make them happy. - players stop confiding in ladies that you want to date..thats step one toward the friend zone…second..stop being available when she needs to talk…thats why she has girlfriends…third, take your dyck out your hand…four..have a unique and interesting life…women love to have fun or to feel some type of inspiration toward a goal or ideal. Be a man of integrity….be who you say you are. “mint b4 dyck” it works trust me..that is all

Great blog post you cited, but beyond all the “energy” notations is the same as we been saying here – get you together. In whatever fashion that is, whatever form that takes, become the better match.

@all

This feeling of things happening ‘to you’ is crap. Complete and total bs. You’ve created the life you’re leading (good, bad, or ugly) by the choices you’ve made. Accepting that as fact, own those choices and decide to make better ones. Bad dates don’t ‘happen’, you choose them.

- i agree lito…the type of women in a mans life reflects is current mental state. What we do is try to live in two worlds…we want that chick we with to be more than what she has experience for…meaning you cant continue to “slum” expect to find a dime. You have to upgrade your mental in order to see the dimes walking in front of you..they are everywhere in all SHAPES AND SIZES…trust that…again in our immediate circle is your potential long term mate..but something in your mental is keeping you from them…if you want something different then what you know..then you have to create a new vision for your life to attract that something different…

Rell, I agree with all that you have said. Also the underlying self defeatist attitude is very sickening to read. If people sell themselves short in any sort of way they will always come up short in every way. IMO

I guess guys are used to encouraging themselves to step to a woman and a man can have any woman he puts his mind to getting, yes I said it ladies. If a man chooses you, you really have no choice in the matter, if he REALLY wants you he will get you. You can not stop a determined man. Thank about those guys you wish you were never involved with, the one night stands, the wasted months, the failed relationships or the great LTR’s or your happy marriage. He chose you. So a man can date whomever he pleases, the issue is if he wants to put in the work or not. Sometimes he will just to get what he wants and then leave or he may want that woman for the long haul. I hate to break it down that way. :)

That’s why we have so many 2 date max runs. Many find that they can’t keep it going. Many of us can make a date, but can we date.

If you are looking for marriage, then you need to move away from Atlanta. People are afraid of committment in the A. My wife and I went to more weddings when we lived in Detroit versus being in Atlanta and we have lived in Atlanta for 10 years. We only lived in Detroit for 4 years. The dudes are mostly committment phobes or just like being with different chicks and the women for the most part are too darn picky. Just my .02 cents.

Let’s see, where did I meet the “substantial” (more than a few dates) ones…

I’ve met the two most substantial ones at mixers/events that one of the fraternities has thrown around the city.

I’ve met one at a professional networking function.

One I met the one and only time I actually went out with someone on a dating website.

One I met at the Compound during Morehouse homecoming weekend.

One I met at some HBCU reunion party (neither one of us went to an HBCU)

One I met through a fix up.

One I met after years of bantering back and forth on a greek message board we frequented.

Hey Gang!

I met my boo at Publix and it’s been all good!LOL!! Anyway, we have somewhat similiar backgrounds and ran in similiar circles. We are very compatible. The same on some things, but we have differences that add spice.

All fix-ups have been terrible. 2 were 1 date, no more. One did result in a 3 year run that was 2 & 3/4 years too many. I blame myself for staying in it past the expiration date. He was the only man to ever steal from me & cyber-stalk me. I shudder to think about it!

Anyway, did anyone see Millionaire Matchmaker last night? The AA couple was beautiful and had a fantastic date! I think the lady was a former contestant on America’s Next Top Model, but I’m not sure. They just seemed to click really well though.

Avoiding “Psycho”

In all seriousness, I still like Internet dating the most and all of the “meaningful” relationships I’ve had since my divorce were started on the “net”. When I see a lady on line that intrigues me, or I receive a message from one that has some potential, I take the time to know her as much as possible before we ever meet face to face. I start with emails, graduate to a phone call or two, and if they have made it through the “weeding out” process, then I ask them out…not one minute before I get a sense of who they are and if their stories are consistent from contact to contact.

I can tell as much from a few emails about how a person thinks, as I can from an hour at a dance bar playing the ”mating” game and rituals. Have I had a few bad moments? Certainly I have had a few, but not many. Did all stick??? Nope. But before I meet her, I have already seen a picture or two, I have read enough of her coorespondence to get a general feel if she graduated from the “Bates Motel”, and can tell if she is smart enough to write a complete sentence.

Rell, I never said there was anything wrong with trying. I even said that many can get that first date but many find that they are not able or capable of “dating” that individual.

Heck my oldest son used to like to get girl’s telephone numbers and I would hear him telling his friends that he got more than a few. But how many of those numbers were genuine. And better yet, how many of those girls gave him a real date. Not nearly as many as he hoped. He talked them into giving him a number but he wasn’t able to get passed that for many of them.

I am not going to lie to you there were guys that I didn’t give the time of day when I was dating. Many of them came at me with some good game and a masters of suave but it wasn’t for me. We weren’t on the same playing field. Yeah some of them could beat their chest after getting the digits but it feel flat after that. And there were some guys that I tried to date that were just too much for me. I am not a jetsetter and trying to date one was just fooling myself.

So it’s not just being able to get a date, it’s being able to date. That’s the premise of the topic this morning. Finding the one.

Rell, once again I agree with you. You stepped to Chili and she blew you off, but if you wooed her a different way or just found an opening, there is no telling what would have happened. It was your choice to move on to the next one. :) I remember my first date here in Atlanta, I was at Phipp’s Plaza and saw this beautiful woman(very well put together and it was real and not a front) just frowning and walking. I said “stop frowning” she looked me up and down and kept walking and gave me a direct frown. So what did I do? I gave her the ugliest face I could conjure up. (At this point I had already determined I did not like her attitude, but who was she to tell me no? I must conquer) She said, “I do not look like that.”(Uh ohh she is losing ground I got her talking to me now). I said, “To me you do. give me a real smile and I will leave you alone” She gave me a fake smile and I just busted out laughing and so did she. (Oh, now she is laughing with me) Then she gave me a real smile from the laugh that we have. (Got her, now) We talked and walked and I got her number. We went out a few times but I really was not into her(Even though she was a Senior VP at The Weather Channel, had no kids and was verified single, hot and sexy), the deep rooted issue was that she tried to play me to the left initially and I had to prove her wrong, I do the choosing not her.

Raqita, I get what you’re saying. It’s almost like the topic a few weeks ago on dating leagues. Miracles happen, but the chances are slim that you are going to be dating and marrying someone that travels in vastly different circles than you normally travel in. That’s why other than Cinderella stories you hear about, old-money rich usually marries old-money rich. Even though she was a nanny, Elin was introduced to Tiger thru one of the other golfers that she nannied for, plus her family has money too.

I have no doubt I could hold my own in any social situation – I’m intelligent & I clean up well. But I’m not a Washington insider, so I doubt if the Obama’s will be setting me up with someone in their inner circle if I wasn’t seeing my SO. I just don’t have the opportunity.

Funny thing is that I was not “looking” for a relationship, just relaxed and enjoying conversation. I felt she was a good professional contact to have and then all of a sudden I noticed that we were having daily convos about other things and had a lot in common. The connection developed from that and she is definitely a keeper. Show you how to eat your words — both of us said from the outset we would never do a long distance relationship. Oh well.

On the topic of choosing, and how men choose.

1. He pursues you relentlessly until you give in. = He choose to pursue you and not give up, you choose after awhile to give in. (He basically wore you down, but he CHOOSE to endure that path)

2. He made the first step. = He choose to speak to you.

3. You made yourself approachable.= He saw you and Chose to accept your willingness to approach. You think that he was the only guy to see you out there in the open, putting out the “bat signal”?

4. Some women approach men first, so just to save face on my 3 earlier points. Umm, he choose to listen. LOL

At the time, he had finished law school, but had not passed the bar & was temping in DC & renting a house with 2 other people. So needless to say, he was not exactly rolling in money(still isn’t, never passed the bar). Anyway, I was in lust with Grant Hill at the time. I thought he was fine and even though I’m not into athletes, I knew he was intelligent and could play the piano. I said I thought he was just the perfect man! Well, I looked & boyfriend was getting kind of jealous & his buddy was looking crazy. I asked him why he was tripping. He & his buddy said they liked Halle Berry. I said “so”, still bewildered. He said when men mention they like a woman in their heads they are actually making plans on how to meet up with her. I fell out on the floor laughing. I said, like either of you po-as-a-church-mouse dudes actually have a chance at Halle Berry! I said I thought Grant Hill was hot, but I don’t actually believe when he rolls thru town Imma hook up with him & he’ll think I’m any more than 1 of the other countless groupies trying to get up in his face!! Regarding the first poster, Jeff. I would think that any man who’s first goal of the day is to be the first to post a blog, then announce he’s first via another post, probably has no option but to go online to find a GF.

Some rules of thumb: 1. Every time you’re in public, you should look impeccable. Impeccable doesn’t mean expensive or non-casual. My wife looks impeccable wearing clothes she buys from a Chadwick’s catalog. You should be dressing this way because you’ve got too much self-respect not to, not because you’re trying to dress to impress. 2. Sound smart. Most of us want to be in a relationship with a person who has a good head on his/her shoulders. If you butcher the English language in conversation or when you blog, you’re on your way to not making a very good first impression. Again, it’s about self-respect. Do you want to sound like an idiot or be someone who can carry on an engaging conversation. 3. You don’t need a game plan. If you see someone you’d like to meet, go up and introduce yourself – regardless of where you are.

Dan, the whole “stop frowning” or “smile” is irritating. I know exactly what Amred is talking about.

I have a naturally serious-looking expression on my face when I don’t consciously smile. It’s not a scowl by any means though. I get that “stop frowning” from dudes all the time when I’m just going about, minding my own business. There’s a security guard here at work that I had to stop from saying that to me all the time. I’m AT WORK with WORK on my mind here. I’m not walking around with a stupid grin on my face like Suzy Sunshine all day. When he sees me in the hall headed to a meeting or my desk or just to the breakroom, unless I consciously smile, which in greeting folks I usually do, I look serious. It’s just my natural face. Leave me alone.

If I look in your direction, but right past you, and I’m serious, I’m not really looking “at” you, but minding my own business, intent on what I’m doing. Believe me, I’ve never driven any good people away that were meant to be in my life by simply tending to my own business!

I think its reciprocity.. What you put out is what you get back.. No one has to deal with your bad behavior nor you theirs. I think communication and campaigning is the answer. I think you should stay campaigning on the date trail. Holla at whoever you wanna holla at and see what happens. I speak to everybody I see cute, ugly, bad built or brick house. If I see you frowning and I want to holla I just say hello and see how you respond and everything is always done with a smile. Its amazing what a smile and a you look nice today goes a loooong way. I always seek opportunities and not wait for the opportunity to seek me, I see every woman as a prospect. Am I out here chasing chicks around Publix or whereever.. No.. Im just being me, being cool and confident going about my daily B-I.. I love the chase though..

First. Yes Rell, not talking to women does work wonders if they’re funny-style(if you’re an empowered kind of guy and they want you to notice them). Society has you all confused but women’s world revolves around men. Don’t shortchange your power.

And second, I’m not going to reward some random woman with attention for having a smug look on her face or being deceptive with her intentions. That would be enabling bad behavior and it sets the tone for the relationship. And if she’s just neutral you say? Well then what reason do I have to deal with her. Because she exists?

See this is why men get run through the ringer! Because you don’t require much. Now, if she has a pleasant smile on her face, then yes, I’m going to encourage that and acknowledge her because that takes effort and I respect her being accountable for how she presents herself.

Dudes today don’t know how to choose.

I actually met my wife in the one place most people say you can’t meet anybody decent: the club. We were both in House Nightclub in the Underground. She was with her friends and I was rolling solo. We passed by each other and exchanged smiles. Even though the night was early, I saw she was already holding her shoes in her hand. I walked up to her and cracked a joke about that and that got a good response out of her. We danced together a few times, and I asked if she wanted to grab some breakfast, which we did. Two days later, we had our first date. Almost 4 years and one beautiful baby girl later, the rest is history :)

Enter your comments hereI like to say that the same people are everywhere. For the most part the same people you meet at a bar, have a job somewhere, shop somewhere, (might) go to church somewhere, go play somewhere. So the pool of people you have a chance of meeting consists of all people who leave their homes at some point. The difference is how we may carry ourselves depending upon the enviornment we are in. That person dancing on the table at the bar could very well be an accountant who goes to church every week, but we all act differently depending upon our surroundings (or at least we should).

I used to have ‘rules’ about who I would not date based upon where I met them until I realized that these are all the same people. Like I said a while back, I know (female)doctors and lawyers who party at the Central Station one weekend, and the Velvet Room the next.

I am all about the Kitchenaid! Alot of times if you go to like Kitchen Collection outlets you can find the utensils (ice cream scoop, veggie peeler, whisk, etc….) for next to nothing! I’m getting ready to invest in a hand mixer, I have the stand mixer but sometimes that’s just overkill depending on what you are doing. I would like the kitchen aid pots but like you i will have to put that on “the list” ;)

Hey Everyone
I think “attacting the right person” is a passive way of dating, more of a woman’s way of dating. Learn yourself, figure out what you’re looking for, and then pursue people you think might match up with your expectations. This isn’t fool proof, but I think it’s better than waiting for “the right one” to find you. Also, you can meet wonderful people anywhere, just like you can meet horrible people anywhere.

BTW, it’s beautiful out there! Mabye I’ll see “the one” that I want to approach while I’m out for lunch. ;-)

“Stop frowning” is a compliment like “you’re too pretty to make that face”.

Why would you dislike a compliment?

Dan – “Stop frowning” is not a compliment. And it comes across as an order.

Perhaps I have a reason to frown. Perhaps I have something on my mind that is not some random azz dude’s concern.

If you want to talk to me, or compliment me, do so. Don’t tell me to do something. There are a million things that you can say to me than some order.

part of an email i recieved

Women want men.

Ironically, the only “apology” you’d ever owe any woman when it
comes to all of this would be when you FAIL to deliver on the
outward appearance of being a man.

Further, masculinity as defined by women is NOT a violent,
offensive, destructive force. Masculinity is simply the essence of
maleness–that which ignites femininity.

Men who show strong leadership, demonstrate deft decision-making
power and who build well-formed (and dare I say compassionate)
plans to STOP violent, offensive and destructive forces (which are
but a perversion of masculine power) are indeed masculine.

All of that said, I want to clarify something that’s an IMMENSELY
important piece of the puzzle here…especially as you’ve laid it out
on the table.

Being masculine has NOTHING to do, at least directly and/or
definitively, with “imbueing responses with sexual overtones”.

You need not turn the conversation toward sex in order to turn a
woman on any more than she necessarily needs to do so in order to
communicate her femininity to you.

And nor SHOULD you. Nothing would communicate more strongly
to a woman that you DON’T GET IT.

In other words, simply talking about sex–either directly or indirectly–
doesn’t positively affect sexual attraction any more than a car
salesman telling you that you should buy a certain car makes you
want to actually BUY it any more than you did before.

And that goes DOUBLE if the car salesman pushes the issue too
early and or too aggressively…coming off as if it’s all about him.

Everyone knows it’s the CAR ITSELF that makes you want to buy it.
Once you WANT the car, nobody has to talk you into it.

Sexual desire on a woman’s part is NO DIFFERENT.

No one is being sensitive, personally I don’t really care about it. But, you’ve been told by every male on here at one point or another that talking, asking, referencing another dude’s junk is indicative of an alternative lifestyle. And you keep doing it.

Don’t blame it on “culture” (you been in the US long enough to get acculturated), that’s a cry for help or attention, either way, I’m done with it.

You didn’t have to go all the way to Somalia for a black person to tell you that. There are certain circles right here in Atlanta where you’d get treated the same way. Hello Blog,
Just peepin in for a min until it gets busy at work.

Question: Why is it that if you are not smiling men think you are mean?
For example I was leaving an establishment, I had a great time but I didn’t have a smile on my face and these guys watching me leave said” Smile, don’t be all mad”

I was in a good mood but I just find it creepy to be walking around by yourself with a permanent smile on

Any thoughts?

@i am, most NYers don’t walk around with smiles on their faces. I was told to smile all the time. I wasn’t mad, just saw no need to smile. I’ve lightened up over the years. I don’t walk around with a permanent smile affixed to my face.

Nicey Nash is going to be funny on the show;

They need to not make Pamela Anderson dances into erotic dance numbers. She has nice legs

Poor Budd will be the first to go, but I give him 100 for attempting.

That Bengals guy can move. I don’t even know how to spell his last name.

Nicole (Pussycat Dolls is sensual), unlike Pamela Anderson who sexual energy is annoying (well, to this female energy and I’m not hating, really, I’m not).

The ice skater looked like a Russian James Bond. He’s good.

The mother of 8, Kate, will not have many fans.

I don’t think men really think about what they’re saying sometimes. Even if “it’s not that serious.”

People of God, adversity comes in many shapes, forms and fashions. Everyone will face adversity, but not everyone will conquer it. The difference between facing and conquering is knowing the secret ingredient. The secret ingredient is powerful; it’s a weapon; it’s articulate; and it’s a producer of victory. This ingredient is called “praise”.

Nitey nite!
