You’re Too Old For This!

I’m taking a (web) page out of my favorite  “very smart brother’s” blog, to discuss “Things you should give up at 30″ and this hurts me as much as it hurts you. Believe me! When I hit the big 3-0, I realized my perspective about a lot of things needed to change.  Especially dating and relationships! It’s a part of growing older and um..wiser.

I have a classic example of something that can be filed under “you’re too old for this!” and it happened just last week.  I was running around preparing for my New York trip and I drug my friend Brandon out for shopping.  We finished up brunch and I wanted to go to Macy’s to look for a party dress that was blue.

Brandon turns to me with a look of horror on his face when I mentioned the Macy’s location I needed to check out.  It turns out that a lady that he “loved and left” worked at Macy’s and he couldn’t risk going in the store.  Seriously! Brandon is 33 years old, how is it possible that he is still pulling disappearing acts at this age? I told him there are ways to break things off so that you don’t have to face angry women in random places. You’re too old for this, Brandon!

So let’s help others out, today.  If you are nearing 30, you may want to listen up to the old heads (har!) because there are a few things you need to leave in the 20s.

Can you name what things are over now that you are 30? Enlighten us all!

Being over 40 (the New 30, LOL) I am too gosh darn old to being caring about what others think of me and my life. I have lived and I have learned and that’s that.

By 30 you should have open communication with whomever you are bedding and that is bedding you.

By the time you are 30 you should be beyond judging people based solely on looks or education or financial status and expecting people to judge as so.

By 30 you should know by now that you are not the cat’s meow to every feline.

By 30 you should be well rehearsed in knowing that some of the better things in life call for putting in the work.

By 30 you should be over the cattiness.

By 30 you should not be still judging your greatness by someone else’s flaws. Either you got “it” standing on your own or you don’t.

By 30 you should be becoming more in tune and comfortable with your body and its sexuality.

By 30 you should not still be playing jedi mind tricks to get in.

By 30 ladies, you should not be so naïve as to think all the women within your arm reach are jealous of you. Honestly, most women already over 35 careless about what you are or are not wearing.

By 30 you should be over blaming others for your lack of whatever.

By 30 you should be taking accountability for your part of the demise in your failed relationships.

By 30…

You should know what you are too gosh darn old to be wearing.

You should not be shopping from the same racks at the Ltd. that tweens are shopping from.

You should have a sense of style of your own.

You should have a signature scent (if you are into fragrances) that is purchased at a cosmetic counter and not off of a shelf at Walmart.

You should not be still chasing fads.

You should be wearing nice shoes. LOL Get out of the bins at Kmart.

You should own at least one nice coat.

You should be wearing a slip. Yeah I said a slip. And a good bra with proper support.

You should not be chasing a dream of being a video vixen.

You should not be leaving the house with your muffin top or back crack exposed to the world.

A few to add to the discussion…

After age 30…

You’re too old to regress into adolescent behavior anytime things don’t go your way. One of the most unattractive things in the world is to see childishness in a grown man or woman. Grow up and handle your biz!

You’re too old for cartoons and video games.

You’re too old for your high school and/or college life and exploits to be regular (or even semi-regular)topics of discussion. Who cares if you were BMOC/BWOC, were in a fraternity/sorority, got drunk/high every weekend and slept with half the school, That was a long time ago and nobody cares. Get a real life and join adulthood!

You’re too old to be chronically late paying bills.

You’re too old to make baby noises unless you have a baby!

You’re too old to rely upon a “crew” for entertainment. Learn how to do things by yourself or one-on-one.

You’re too old to be hiding your activities from your parents.

You’re too old to have someone (anyone) subsidize your lifestyle.

You should not be walking around with raggedy nails. You can do them yourself at home.

You should not be wearing raggedy underwear.

You should not be still trying to figure out what you are going to do in life. Heck you are already half way through.

You have come to terms with something just aren’t meant to be. Make the best of what you have and try to better it.

You should not be living in regret and letting your mistakes hold you back.

By 30, you should know:

- that Barney purple, tangerine orange, Booberry blue, and Bozo red are BAD choices for hair colors;

- that you speak English according to your audience (no ghetto slang around your boss, while you do business, or around your kids);

- that your “representative” (the package of yourself that you show to others)is much more like who you REALLY are;

- that education just doesn’t occur in school – you have to take the initiative to learn outside of a classroom (you should have been taught this one by age 7);

- that just because you can drink and get drunk, or buy and get high, doesn’t mean that you should!

There’s more, but I’ll stop here.

You should not be leaving the house in your pajamas unless it’s an emergency.

You should at least know how to speak proper English when it rightful time and place.

You should know how to present yourself at a job interview.

You should know what the inside of a doctor’s and dentist’s office look like.

If you are sexually active you have a documented STD test on file.

You should have a valid ID.

You should have a bank account.

You should know to and how to balance your account every month.

By the age of 30 you should own at least on nice suit. And pair of shoes.

You should not be walking around with your underwear showing. Or your pants sagging.

You should not be walking around with your shoes untied.

You should not still be sporting braided or processed hair.

You should not be having to have your girl or mama tell you you need to wash your darn behind.

Morning
One thing I’ve learned is that behaviors often have nothing to do with age. We often use age as an indicator of wisdom, but it’s usually not that accurate. Anyway, I’ll play along. lol

At 30 you ought to be wise enough to:

Know that the cooch does not keep a man or change his mind.

Know that the same approach will yield the same results.

Have figured out that the sensitive thug does not exist.

Understand that taking advice from the wrong people will ruin your relationship.

Make decisions on your own.

Know that the Essence Survey on Love probably isn’t applicable to your life

I’m not into lists of things other people should/should not be doing and at what age. I will be 36 in a few weeks and I still watch cartoons. I might hit up some Super Mario Bros. if I find it laying around. I think people who hold onto certain elements of youth are the most fun to be around because they are not defined by their age.

I think, though, that people tend to fight growing up and having responsibilities and treating people with respect. Along the lines of Diva’s post, at 33 he really is too old to be hiding from an ex girlfriend. He’s also too old to do the disappearing act, though men in their 40’s and 50’s are still doing that mess!

I’d say 30 is too old for anything associated with selfish, reckless youth, but if it keeps your spirit young and you love it, live your life– just don’t expect everyone to agree with how you live it.

We often use age as an indicator of wisdom

Not trying to debate nor rebutt but I disagree here, somewhat. Wisdom (not smarts) comes by way of life experiences. You cannot possibly know what a 40 year old knows until you’ve lived to experience getting to 40. There may be some things you can agree upon but what happens during year 37 cannot happen until year 37…so forth and so on. Now, it’s another story when you won’t learn. Just naturally though, life and living bring lessons, no other way to get it. Even with teachings from our parents, lessons are given as a guide and gauge of what to do versus not, but that will connect and come together during process of maturation.

An aside on cartoons… they are often produced on two levels– physical comedy for children, high level reasoning, cause and effect and problem solving for older viewers. I’m saying that to say that a) cartoons were originally written and produced for adults and b) they still are.

Ladies, sex does not keep a man. You got to have more than that to make it stick.

Men, your Johnson alone is just not going to do it.

They both are too old to not be asking for or stating what their needs are in a relationship. In and out of bed.

lurker, I agree with you about wisdom. Still enjoying life well in your aged years is one thing, but not growing up mentally and emotionally is something quite different.

There is a time and place for everything. Wisdom teaches you that.

Cmon, you have to put my whole quote. lol “We often use age as an indicator of wisdom, but it’s usually not that accurate.” I would also say that wisdom doesn’t come with life experiences, but with what you learn from those experiences and can successfully implement going forward. It’s exactly why age is not a good indicator. A 50 year old has lots of life experience, but if they can’t implement what they’ve learned from those experiences, then they aren’t wise. I think we actually agreed. ;-)

As some one getting older…don’t!

Think young, but act mature.
Be playful, but know when to put the toys away.
Recognize that it really isn’t “all about you”.
Realize that relationships are the most important thing in life…not “stuff”.
Recognize that relationships are partnerships…not your Daddy or your Mama.
Realize that integrity is measured by what you do when no one is watching or grading you.

You should also know:

 that “conversate” in 2010 is still not a word

 that someone is not a hater because they don’t share your point of view

 that you should be financially mature and responsible. Trying to use people as personal ATMs is not cool. Neither is being all ubiquitous when you’re in begging mode while having people to place a missing person report when it’s time to pay up.

 that things of quality in life has a higher cost and some things you can’t get through a “hook-up”.

DreamsMat, life presents itself the same to everyone. All may not learn as they go thru life but the opportunity to learn did cross their path. So yeah a 50 year old should not be still thinking and acting like a 25 year old when it comes to most things in life. That does not mean that some won’t still do it but you should be learning better.

A 25 year old may think money can buy happiness. By 50 you should have learned better. If you haven’t then you pay the price that comes with it.

And are you trying to say that you have never seen someone and said “they are just too to be looking like or doing that”?
