I have pretty much been on all the traditional dates you can imagine. You know, the safe and predictable ones. I know that I am not the only one who is tired of going to dinner and a movie for a first date, am I? I think it’s time we all shook things up a little.
Why not use the remaining weeks of 2009 to think outside the “dating” box and move out of our ridiculously safe (read: dull) comfort zones. Let’s all make a list of the most outrageous, non-traditional, completely out of your character date activities you can think of and then go do it!
We all need to participate so we can all report back to share how great/terrifying/outrageous thinking outside the dating box really is. We could even vote on who has the best idea and who was the bravest!
You know a great place to start? How about in a bull pen!
The Professional Bull Riders are charging in to town (har!) this weekend at the Gwinnett Center. Ladies, if you want to meet men you have to go where they have a good time. Events like this are filled to the brim with guys and yours truly will have an inside track: the hilarious and talented Flint Rasmussen.
I’m going to meet up with him on Friday for a quick interview to learn more about the sport and pick his brain on how to handle the manliest of men. I bet he could provide a lot of outside the box ideas, too, so I’ll be taking notes.
Who is up for the challenge? What kind of outside the box activity can you do with a date? What can you do that would be completely out of character for you?
What would you do if money were no object and you wanted to go the adventurous route for a date. Where would you go and what would you do?

Two things off the top of my head:
- Gun range
- Hockey game (I know this isn’t that outside the box, but this isn’t the first sporting event most brown people think of attending)
As far as money being no object, I’ll have to get back to you on that one… I do know that it involves a helicopter ride
Good topic WD… looking forward to some neat-o ideas

I realize more and more women are comfortable doing this, but I think a date to a strip joint can prove to be adventurous. Heck you might even inquire where the girls shop for their outfits. When you get back home with your SO you can incorporate some of the moves you memorized. Just a thought!

One idea for an adventurous date could be whitewater rafting. You could ride on the Ocoee River in Tennessee, just 2 hours north of Atlanta. While it’s not out of the box for me because I really enjoy the activity, it would be non-conventional for a date. But of course, it’d have to be with a woman who wouldn’t mind getting her hair wet…

Dating is about INTERACTION so why guys still take girls to movies in the beginning is crazy because you really cant interact in a movie.
There are a ton of good out of box activities in Atlanta. I have brought dates to my bartending class which was a good and fun interactive activity.
Some good activities are:
1. Arrange for a flying lesson at Dekalb-Peachtree Airport. It takes alot of guts to go flying in such a small plane but shows adventure.
2. Explore a day in a city that is close by, drive to Birmingham, Charlotte, Savannah, etc and just wander around.
3. Take a cooking class together in a totally different cuisine (learn some cuban, japanese, brazilian, food).
4. Meet for a power lunch doing the work week. Take a couple hours to just hang out during the day to change up the pace before you go back to work.
5. Have a game party at your home with just you two. Tailgate watch the game and just enjoy the game if you have 2 sports people.
Hope these spark some interests!

The less traditional these ideas are, the more they sound like simply doing things that are fun with your SO, and less like a date-date. Like, not really a date at all, just going and having fun, in all extreme likelihood with someone you’re already well familiar with, if not in a relationship with. I suppose you can call fishing, a beach trip, or hiking a date, but it doesn’t sound like one to me. More like, what are you into today? Want to go hiking, a drive into the mountains? Let’s take a long weekend, do you like Rosemary Beach or Gulf Shores this time?
Speaking of beaches, I’ve decided after our last Caribbean trip that as far as beaches go, there is little or no reason to go anywhere but the FL panhandle. Those are among the best beaches in the world. Beaches on Aruba, Barbados, Curacao, even St. Maartens don’t even come anywhere close. St. Lucia was different, with black sand and all, and striking scenery.

I have to disagree. The traditional date would be going to a restaurant and sitting down to eat. How many times have people done that…or going to a movie.. yeah traditional but not really a good idea for a date IMO.

Movies make poor first or 2nd dates, because you just sit there and watch the movie, without much interaction. I suppose you can talk about the flick afterwards, but… big deal.
Having a nice meal for 1st, 2nd or 3rd dates (or later), on the other hand, gives a great opportunity to converse and get to know them a bit. You have to eat anyway, so why not? Dates don’t all need to be carnival rides, and frankly, hiking, beaches, etc. are more along the lines of being relaxing, not entertaining. I’d say that if it takes that much to amuse a person of interest or potential interest that they’re not interested in a nice dinner and whatever afterwards, then they’re probably not that much into me, but are rather just looking to be entertained. I’m not the entertainment committee.

It’s not about being entertained or having someone entertain you. We can both got to comedy show to be entertained.
Usually you talk on the phone before you get to the date. You try to grasp what kind of person you’re dealing with and what some of their general interets are. Now me for instance … I want to be come a teacher. So if my date said be ready around 11 or 12 we’re going out, and he takes me to volunteer at a school with children. I would be more than estatic. Or if my date knew that I enjoyed to cook, and he took me to a cooking class to prepare a dish that I’ve never tried before. I think that would make for great conversation.

abc the cooking classes we’ve taken have allowed me to see him interact with others, which does offer insight on a date. you still do the traditional sit-down meal when you’re done so there’s plenty of conversation time as well.
problem is, when you do the ‘interview’ date at the restaurant people are more apt to bring their reps. when you do something that’s active and engaging you are more likely to be your natural self – giving unplanned reactions and comments in that situation. that’s the REAL you … and that’s who i want to meet.

First Dates that I planned in the past….Dave and Busters, Malibu Grand Prix (Norcross), Bowling, Gun Range, Paint ball, Q-Zone (Laser Tag), pottery. Sometimes, I varied it by listening to the female’s interests. If she was a girlie girl, sweating activities wouldn’t go over well. In that case, high museum or botanical garden was more often used.
FYI, Viking has grilling and cooking schools. They are located in the Brookwood Shopping area on near the Amtrak Station on Peachtree Street (Near Wolfgang Puck express)

Girl, you know I can change the rules…the reason I only count business days because on the weekend I am having fun eating plenty of food chilling.
I have done the hiking thingy and most of the dates people listed except for the money no object dreams…I really do not have those because I am planning for a few big events now. Listed below are just a few things I have done outside the box:
1. horseback riding- I go a lot and I love sunrise and sunset rides
2. day trips…hop on a plane catch a play or go eat a hotdog or something in a city I like…I am not big on driving so I have to fly.
3. racing…during breast cancer awareness I like to see what my car can do on the track
4. cooking classes
5. hiking
6. concerts, plays and sporting events out of town
7. Wine tasting
8. Massages (couple massages and a day at the spa)
9. apple, pumpkin and berry picking
10. Private pilot lessons

Hi KP
the nice thing about both the places you referenced is that they’re an easy day trip from the metro area. before the first date you’ve probably spent some time in phone convo, so you should be comfortable enough with each other to spend a day of walking, talking & taking advantage of all there is to do in those “intimate” settings without a required overnight stay.

The best way to have it is not to think about it.That may cause an accident be4 u get to the destination, remeber, the chic is sitting in the car/plane,right beside u,wearing soem skimpy maybe and her leather…i mean..cleavage is tantalazing to ur horny eyes.

Haaaaaa, you can only hope to have as great a disposition as I when you reach my age given what I’ve gone through in my 51 years of living….yes indeed and I’m proud of every year. BTW, there are a few lurkers older than me!

We make our own drive-in at the house. A DVD projector, a screen (or sheet), some popcorn and some lawn/patio chairs out on the back lawn. Voila, our own safe drive-in theater. LOL

KP that’s the thing. Certain places usually implies certain things. A guy asking a woman to ‘chateau elan’ on a first date will not set too well with any women that I know. Now if it’s like Melo said and they have discussed what’s expected by the man with him going all out like that, then that’s a different story.
First dates, keep it simple, keep it light.

@czB ~ The reference was made about old people. About me being old. The implication was made that a sign that one is old is that they knit, already have grandchildren and most own cat(s). If a younger person owns a cat, it’s ok, they have a pet. An older person has one because that’s their only companion! As Page1908 would always say, GTFOOH!!

yeah, Raqi, that’s what he blog has advised. the drive-in is on Moreland. it’s in the hood, but as i’ve said before i’ve been going for 20 years without a single incident. i’ve gone alone, with my s/o and as a family. during my separation and just after the divorce when money was tight, my kids & i looked forward to the drive-in because that was the only way i could afford to take them to the movies. kids are free, you pack up all your own food & drink to save $$$, and you get three movies for the price of one.

I’ve taken dates to Arts Festivals before. I took my last date to the Georgia Aquarium for their Friday Night Jazz Journeys series. It was nice to take a relaxing stroll around the aquarium and not get bumped into tons of stollers and screaming children. And, we even touched sting rays and other sea creatures. It’s a very very cool date. The music was cool and there was food and drink available. Afterwards you can take a strolling to Centennial Park and watch kids play in the rings.
I like taking dates with me while I’m shopping. For example, if I need to buy a shower curtain, then why not. I have to be there. It gives us something to do that’s low key, so there’s no “interview” factor. And, if we don’t like each other there’s a way out. Not doing chateau elon or jumping out of a plane. Activities where you are bonded to that person or you should get your will in order before doing are not good 1st date activities in my opinion.
I’d like to take a date to the airport and people watch. That sounds cool, but it has to be the right kind of person.
Do like dude in 40 days and Nights… he took home girl on the bus.
