Bonnie & Clyde

I was having a friendly debate with my friend Mark about loyalty in dating relationships. I don’t think it exists.  As humans, we are self-preserving, self-serving people.  Loyalty extends about as far as it can until we decide that our own needs are more important than someone else’s.

He disagreed and said that loyalty is one of the things that people should be willing to prove in dating to lead to a relationship.  Mark and I  joked about how Bonnie & Clyde were known as the most loyal couple in history.

In some twisted way, the fact that she not only stuck by Clyde and covered for him, she  also joined in his crime sprees of robbery and murder. Are women expected to break the law to prove loyalty to their man, though!?

Do you think that loyalty is a realistic expectation in dating? Is it important to you when you are getting to know someone?

How do you know when someone is loyal to you? Is it something you can really prove or a feeling you give?

Do you think that couples have to “keep” their mate loyal?  What kind of person is more likely to be loyal? Is that the kind of character trait you can suss out in dating?

Leggs our little lady is only 5 months and is already making demands.

Babies cry because that is their only form of communication until they learn to talk and ask for what they want. But I’m telling you that little girl as an attitude. AT. TI. TUDE.

Lil leggs has never been whooped by her father either. I did the whooping. Her last whooping you would have thought I shot her with a shotgun. She refused to get up from the floor from her last spanking so each time I had to go in the room she was blocking, I stepped over her leaving her there crying!

Leggs my thing was the laundry. Not folding and putting away that last load in the dryer. I would be watching TV or talking on the phone and either neglect or forget about that last load.

Mom and pop would come home from where ever they went and it was on. My sister would get it because she was just getting home when they pulled up. I would get because of the laundry. And my youngest brother would get it because he didn’t wipe off the counter after washing the dishes. And my oldest brother would get it because he allowed it all to happen. LOL

I see why he became a psychotherapist. He was probably trying to figure out why they held him responsible for what we did or didn’t do.

Cemeeli When I got older I wished my dad would have whooped me instead of me having to endure his lectures.

Hey man, just beat me and get it over with. A two minute whooping versus and 2 hours (actually 20 minutes) lecture.

I have to agree.

My mom was the beater for the girls and my bro, but my dad would only beat my brother naked with a extention cord! (DAM!N). All he had to do was get his grades up and stop getting U’s… !!!

Man he would take him downstairs in the basement make him get naked and wear him out!!

Now that I think about it. Was that chid abuse???

@Cee ~ isn’t it amazing how sweet they are now. My mother was a force you didn’t want to reckon with. When I go home I often find myself looking at her sideways wondering when did the “pea pod” people come replace her with this model. I can hardly recognize her.

Yes, in our day it was child abuse but we didn’t know any better. Heck, the phone was always locked up so we never even thought about calling 911.

Dream my parents would not whip us all over like that. You had to stand there and take it on the rear end. If you moved it took that much longer.

And Leggs I am not going to call it abuse. Our generations wouldn’t dare think of doing some of the stuff these kids do now. Those whipping are a big reason why.

Our parents could send us down the street and didn’t have to worry about us acting up ’cause Mrs. Nella would whip us all the way back home if we did.

True story:

I told my mom’s that I’d call childrens service on her, to wit she responded “Without any bruises, they’re going to leave you here. Worse thing I’ll have to do is talk to somebody a couple of weeks from now, you should be awake by then.” <—never stopped washing dishes to even look at me

You said it InfamousD. Forget about taking away a Gameboy or an Xbox. Do like Kym, clean out their entire room! These kids are buck wild and don’t seem to worry about going home once dark falls after they did something wrong earlier. Nothing like trembling all the way home weighing your options or running away now or getting that beating. In my house, I’m the sheriff and there will be no wilding out! (let’s see I have a good 2 more years to see if this is actually true)!

No accountability.. No consequences for their actions at a young age..

Not only that, but they law..

Case in point. My aunt is raising 2 twin boys that are the epitome of bad. The dad isn’t around and they are out of control. She used to beat the he!! out of them, but they got immune to it. They were in school one semester learning about child abuse, the signs and what you can do if you are a victim of CB.
Well the stupid lil mofo called DCFS on his mom when she beat his AZZ for stealing the “dope boys” drugs. You see around their neighborhood, they hide money and dope in a certain spot. Well this little knuckle head stole it and came home with it… his twin told their mom. And my aunt beat his butt b/c she was scared they would come knocking on her door and god knows what would happen. So she beat the meat off of his butt… long story short he called on her it took a lil while to get those kids back. They went to stay with my other aunt until the investigation was over…

I don’t know the details of the case, but I’m sure that mess will be in the system for a while.

I guess we have gone full circle. It looks like with most of us Mom and Pop were Bonnie and Clyde when it came to disciplining and trying to raise us right.

Like I told my sons, Mason and I are united. We are one. What one says the other agrees and upholds.

Leggs

Ok, not “child abuse” it just hurt so much. More like the 8th Amendment (cruel and unusual punishment). Waking a child up just to fold the pillowcases properly. But all of that loving and showing care for us, albeit painful, pretty much kept most of us on the straight and narrow.

I don’t think Bonnie was being loyal when she hooked up with Clyde. She would have run off with anyone who got her out of that town and could come up with a few bucks now and then.

Is loyalty an expectation when you’re dating in the short term, as in hanging out together now and then? Loyalty becomes part of the decision-making process when the two daters consider becoming a couple and only dating each other. Then, their individual past behavior indicates whether loyalty is a strong character trait. If not, that’s a signal to move on. Loyalty is a must in a long-term committed relationship.

My biggest problem now is grades. My son for whateva reason has one teacher(every other year) who he cannot seem to get along with. I told him everyone is not going to like you. But for whateva reason he has one that gives him hell and he gives it back by not doing the work as if that is punishing the teacher. Now in 6th grade he had a A but his personality just clashed with the teacher. I think it is just “A” type teacher, goofy, nerdy student. “A” type folks and goofy kids don’t mix well. Last teacher was “A” type too. **sigh** 5 more years …just 5 more years.
