Get a hobby, Find a date

The very wise Lou Holtz once said, “If you’re bored with life — you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things — you don’t have enough goals.”  I happen to agree with him.

I remember my Dad would say that you can actually tell a lot about a man by where he spends most of his time and money. So if he has some over the top obsession or massive porn collection, you might want to pay attention to his habits, including their hobbies.

What kind of hobbies are you in to? How did you get started with it?  (No, dating should NOT be considered a hobby!) What do you think your habits and/or hobbies say about you?

Our friends over at The Frisky listed some hobbies that can make one appealing to the opposite sex.  I am not in favor of picking up a hobby solely to snag a mate, but I definitely love the idea of having/finding a passion for something. If  you happen to meet someone, then it’s time well spent and personal growth. Can’t beat that!

What hobbies would make you sit up and take notice and why?

My hobbies (as they change) really only signify my interest in a given subject at that time.

As for having hobbies to attract a mate, there is some relevance to that. When a person is comfortable in an environment and with themselves it radiates (see AB’s comments about attached women yesterday).

As for what would make me take notice? Whatever hobby she has: wearing high heels (or boots), tight clothing, and a smile whilst performing said hobby.

Morning, Do women have hobbies?!?..

If she could cook, I guess I would take notice. That seems to be such a rarity nowadays. How do you not know how to make cornbread, I mean really.. If shopping is a hobby, I wouldn’t take notice. Unless you know how to save money while shopping… If gossiping is a hobby I wouldn’t take notice, but that seems to be a favorite. If she is an avid reader I would take notice, because at least I know there is some quiet time…

GM All!

I like to read; he doesn’t. He likes to cook; I don’t. However, we both enjoy watching & playing sports, and we both love dogs. We often stroll out to the dog park, and just this past weekend we went to another protection competition.

I don’t think I would notice a man more for his chosen hobby, but meeting someone who is into something different does allow an opportunity to learn new things. I’ve challenged him to read TD Jakes, and he helps me hone my skills in the kitchen.

czBrat – the same is true for my relationship. Also we both love working out.

I always thought hobbies to be something that one does regularly, purely for pleasure. That is why I don’t list working out as a hobby – for me it’s a necessity. Also why I don’t list travel as a hobby – it’s purely for pleasure but I don’t do it nearly enough.

I enjoy watching men play musical instruments, but I’ve always thought musicians to be a little off, so I would be wary of dating one. But I do check out musicians, particularly drummers for some reason.

I wonder if singing karaoke can be considered a hobby?

Merning folks.

Having a hobby is a great way of releasing some of lifes pressure. My hobbies, as I’ve noted, are training dogs, shooting pool and fine watches. My absolute love is dog training. Through dogs I met my last gf and a ton of people I otherwise wouldnt have met. I also used my dogs to generate income for my real estate business. Its what I’d do all day everyday if I didnt have to earn a living.

CZ, what competition did you attend? What kind of dogs do you have? I had presa canarios.

My hobbies are playing music, golf, antiques, travel. We’ve re-landscaped and re-decorated, but I wouldn’t call it a hobby, although we sure seem to watch a lot of those DIY TV shows — man, I’m over those, but she still likes them.

I don’t think I’ve ever really met anyone or scored dates from pursuit of hobbies, but the more those kinds of things match up, the more compatibility there is.

Morning All!

Tazzee – I like musicians too, guess b/c I played an instrument. But to take a line from my favorite movie…”My mother said to never date a musician, you will be inviting pain & heartache into your life”..LOL! Seriously though, I have always thought musicians to be a little ‘interesting’ as well. Personally I dig trumpet players…the sax players, drummers.

Hobbies. Like Infamous I LOVE music, especially live music. I like shopping for new scents, whether for the house or a perfume/oil for myself. I like ’smell goods’. Love sports, football/basketball/baseball/tennis/gymnastics/ice skating…..I like watching all those. One thing I would love to get into though is photography, I like capturing moments so to speak. Oh and my secret interest/hobby….I love reading Greek Mythology, dont know why but something about it really grabs me.

The thing about musicians is that they’re likely to be more interested in music than in you — you’ll always take 2nd place. There’s always more chicks to be found on gigs, and relationships are rarely on a musician’s agenda, anyway. That, along with their being broke most of the time, is the drawback to dating musicians.

Professor

@DK…we use the Pygmalion effect all the time in training and business, but look at where that concept and name was taken from Pygmalion fell in love with a statue and was so enthralled he believed in this ivory statue and would not date a “real woman” so Aphrodite gave the statue life.

As for business when you set high expectations that are higher than normal and believe in what you are doing those that you are training succeeds beyond the average standard. So you have to “believe.”

The Elizabethen Era was more ritualistic for me, it was more about the pomp and circumstance (easily relatable to my disdain for boughie people).

The rebel in me likes the upheaval of the Dark Ages; like the founding of Calvinism, the Lutheran Church, the revolt against the patriarchial and patronizing Catholicism of the time.

For me, those times produce some of the greatest (and lasting) works of the human mind.

What do you think your habits and/or hobbies say about you?

That I am a creative thinker…and that is what I notice about someone else when they have hobbies as well…what does it say about how they are expressing something about themselves…are they methodical, analytical, creative, inquisitive, disciplined, adventurous, athletic, etc.

Again, the Prince and Princess, King and Queen meme does nothing for me. “Let them eat cake” (whether historically accurate or not) is all I think of when I think Victorian. And don’t get me started on the “spreading of Christianity”.

The fall of Rome would be more pointedly characterized by Nero and Ceaser’s freaky great grandson (whose name escapes me). It was a time of societal complancency that allowed hungrier nations to bite off pieces (sound familiar?).

BTW, Prof, I was and English Ed major & taught 9th & 11th grade Lit & composition in my younger days. My advice to your niece: if she really wants to teach, do so at the college level — and in that case, she needn’t worry about the education courses (which are worthless anyway), just stick with her Lit major & continue on to graduate programs. High school is a horror show.

DK…

You are correct in questioning our government. You argument isn’t anything new. Have you ever read the Federalist papers? It has been a concern from the beginning of the country through both the Articles of Confederation and into the Constitution.

As far as the gov’t goes. Only one branch, the legislative, was supposed to be the voice of the people. Therefore, they are the only branch in which the people truly elect its members.

The President isn’t elected by the people. President is elected through the electoral college. Remember , even with Florida, Gore got more popular votes than Bush in the 2000 election.

Of Course, the Supreme Court doesn’t have to answer to any elections. They have lifetime jobs unless they break the law or violate the Constitution. It is actually written in the Constitution as such. (Art. III)

The greatest example is this health care debate. It isn’t about looking out for americans health care. It is about protecting capitalism. If people and companies are going bankrupt over healthcare costs, it takes money from other areas of our economy. I worked in foreclosure law (representing banks) for many years. At least 1/3 of the bankruptcies and foreclosure came from one person being diagnosed with an illness and having to pay out of pocket for a lot. Most common was some form of cancer and having to pay for chemotherapy.

On another note, that KISS concert was superb. It was one the top five concerts that I’ve ever attended.

I guess that I liked it even more than normal since I was in a suite and the job paid for the tickets

DK, don’t go for any old music storefront guitar teacher. It’ll make a difference in what music styles interest you: classical, jazz, rock, acoustic? I might be able to recommend some good teachers, who’ll go way beyond chord shapes and strumming patterns. I suggest some classical lessons first, no matter where your real interest lies, to learn to read music and get a feel for where guitar repertoire really originates.

Also, I’d recommend springing for used pro-level instruments if you can. You can expect to pay 25-30% less than for new ones. That way, you’re not held back by a lesser instrument, and if you should change your mind about wanting to play a year or 2 two down the road, you can get your money back out of them.

I think for me I want to catch them before they leave the nest so to speak.. Its that fork in the road mentalIty they have.. it’s go off to college or go get a job… While college doesn’t necessarily grant you success in life, it gives you the tools to become successful. I remeber in high school there were so many pregnant girls, kids with unproductive parents, unruly kids, and kids that were trying to make it out of their neighborhood. i want to make a difference in those kids… let them know that ther are choices out there, give them something to hope for… I used to live in milwaukee and when I came to chicago.. The thinkgs they were learning I had learned 2 yrs ago.. It was so sad. Mo – I have a co worker that is hanging on to some split ends!!

Speaking of which…I have a coworker that I would see in the building for years, prior to working on this team. Her hair was always about waist length. She had braids added on top and said it damaged her hair. She had it all cut off and did a light press and pull back in a ball for about 4 months. She had about 5 inches taken off last weekend and someone pressed for her….absolutely gorgeous. It’s growing back and now under her shoulder blades. You can take care of hair and it doesn’t take much to whip back into shape.

U2 was here earlier this month and they sold out the Georgia Dome. I missed that one. I had a midterm the next morning.

The best concert was I’ve seen was Prince during his Hit or Miss tour and he was at Tabernacle. (I like small venues)

Mechelle Ndegocello was a relatively close second.

Michael Jackson was very good also. My first concert ever….The Bad tour. The wife wanted to see him so much that we considered getting tickets to his concerts in London. However, our schedule didn’t work out so that we could have. As it turns out, MJ schedule didn’t work out either……

Rick James/Teena Marie, Quiet Riot, Cinderella, were all good.

“My heart would be with the kids. I am a sucker for turning a bad situation into a miracle.”

That’s the attitude you must have. My hat’s off to you — Anyone who can do that job & do it well has my utmost respect, because I know I certainly can’t do it. And you are correct, punk kids from bigger punk parents, school systems terrified of lawsuits stripping teachers of every shred of disciplinary authority, teen pregnancy (on a side note, just in the 6 classes I taught, there were 7 — yes 7 — girls who either were pregnant or already had a baby… 1 girl was pregnant with baby #2), drugs… It truly is a calling, not a profession.

“Tell me the story swiss!!!!”

Okay, I’ll tell it, but it really is a downer — don’t say I didn’t warn you…

So, I actually taught at my old high school — so, most of my former teachers were still there. One of them was asking me how things were going & at that point I had already decided to move on to other things & told him so. His says to me “that’s a wise move… if I knew I had to spend the rest of my life in this place I’d kill myself.” Well, I didn’t think much of it, because this guy had always been a little odd. But the next morning, the biology teacher in the adjoining room got to work & found this guy dead in the equipment closet between their rooms. He had built a homemade gas chamber & gassed himself to death at the school. What’s even creepier — he had some of his student unwittingly help him build the contraption he used to off himself…

But hey, that’s the kind of weird crap that only seems to happen in my home town — now, go out there & change the world… ;-)

Also women who are overly ambitious with their naps. Trying to make their hair do something that it was not intended to do EVER. Most women really need to figure out the style that works best with her natural hair and rock that. Any style that requires too much processing, too much working, too much product, too much spritz….is just not freakin’ healthy.

And the chicks that don’t know how to do their own hair but can only afford to go to the salon once every blue moon. Learning upkeep between visits is vital.

If your hair only looks good the first three days after you leave SheNaeNae’s House of Hair & Weave Creations, you have a problem and need to educate yourself on proper hair care.

I’ve apparently missed alot of the conversations today (I am a powerful lurker), but I feel like I need to point out something from the 10:00 time frame:
“The dark/victorian/shakespeare era” is a pretty mixed up statement.

The Dark Ages, or the Middle Ages, ranges from about the 8th century (a little before, a little after, depending on which historian you refer to) until the 13th/14th centuries.

Shakespeare lived and wrote in the 16th century.

The Victorian age, named for Queen Victoria (1830s-19teens) is generally used to describe the 19th century and the 20th century up until the Great War (WWI).

Thanks.

The Elizabethan era IS the Shakespearean era – they lived at the same time. (Shakespeare in Love, anyone?)

Dan, Luther’s 95 Theses are considered one of the pivotal turning points from the Dark/Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It’s a great period in history – alot of the ideas that spring up here in history have carried through to shape the world we live in today. It’s fascinating.

Dream_n: While you say it is a period in which Christianity thrived – some historians would disagree. It was a time in which Christianity was in great crisis, with the splintering of the Catholic Church and the rise of Protestantism (Luther, Calvin, Church of England, etc.)

WARNING – VERY BAD HALLOWEEN JOKE!

A man is walking home alone late one foggy night…
when behind him he hears:

Bump…
BUMP…
BUMP…

Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him..

BUMP…
BUMP…
BUMP…

Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him.

FASTER…
FASTER…
BUMP…
BUMP…
BUMP…

He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him..

However, the casket crashes through his door, with the lid of the casket clapping

clappity-BUMP…
clappity-BUMP…
clappity-BUMP…

on his heels, the terrified man runs.

Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in. His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.

With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door.

Bumping and clapping toward him.

The man screams and reaches for something, anything, but all he can find is a bottle of cough syrup!

Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket…

and,

(hopefully you’re ready for this!!!)

The coffin stops.

Not to get into another meta-fight, but “let them eat cake” is attributed to Marie Antoinette, Queen of France during the French Revolution (1789) and a good 50 or so years before Victoria.

However, Dan, if you’re reading this, I absolutely agree with you that there are correlations between Rome’s fall and the demise of the American Empire. Nero fiddled while Rome burned – W snickered like a redneck while NOLA flooded, California burned and quaked, etc.

Has anyone else who is Historically inclined noticed that the Empires that Rule the World have ruled for less and less time as history has progressed?

My facts are straight. History lesson is over for the day, you can all breathe a big sigh of relief and go back to talking about “ish” and whatnot.

czBrat — No need for boo-hooin’… Here’s a more light-hearted anecdote:

I was giving SAT prep for my 11th graders & in one of my classes I had the prototype airhead. Cute, but utterly vapid little blonde, blue-eyed chick. I was about 15 minutes into the class and the whole time I could see that this girl was dying to ask a question, but was holding back. Finally, she raised her hand and asked, “Mr. Swiss, why do they call it the SAT? Is it because they give it on Saturday?” I’m not sure which is more sad — the fact that she was serious in asking that question, or the fact that the rest of the class had no idea why it was so funny….

For contemporary jazz, Brecker et.al. would be of interest. Grover has/had a nice R&B sort of thing going on, but, not jazz. Miles didn’t play sax, of course.

czBrat – my sister taught Kindergarten and my mom & I went to her class one day. It was sooo freakin funny, and somewhat sad, how the kids couldnt believe that my sister and I shared the same last name with my mother. They were like “There are 3 Ms Smiths??” And then they were like “you have a mommy AND a sister??”

Speaking of prototype – who was I debating ‘prototype’ with yesterday?

Anyway, I looked up the definition of prototype and it is most often defined as the base model for a new product or an individual that exhibits the essential features of a later type.

That’s like buying Windows 95 and installing it on your iPhone.

@ABC…. I know Miles Davis did not play the sax, I was simply stating I enjoy listening to the old school jazz performers. But,I beg the differ on Grover Washington not being a jazz musician, I have most of Grover W. music and some of his music I would classify as jazz!

Mr. old school what is your definition of jazz?

One of my co-workers just came into my office and told me that some dude was asking about me, wanting to know who I was.

My response?

“Tell him I ain’t nobody he wants to know.”

And with that smartbutt statement, I’m out.
