Get a hobby, Find a date

The very wise Lou Holtz once said, “If you’re bored with life — you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things — you don’t have enough goals.”  I happen to agree with him.

I remember my Dad would say that you can actually tell a lot about a man by where he spends most of his time and money. So if he has some over the top obsession or massive porn collection, you might want to pay attention to his habits, including their hobbies.

What kind of hobbies are you in to? How did you get started with it?  (No, dating should NOT be considered a hobby!) What do you think your habits and/or hobbies say about you?

Our friends over at The Frisky listed some hobbies that can make one appealing to the opposite sex.  I am not in favor of picking up a hobby solely to snag a mate, but I definitely love the idea of having/finding a passion for something. If  you happen to meet someone, then it’s time well spent and personal growth. Can’t beat that!

What hobbies would make you sit up and take notice and why?

Cz…I am an equal opportunity breast lover. All sizes, shapes, and colors. Like Phife “I like them brown, yellow, Puerto Rican and Haitian”

Seriously though, the group and the music was pretty darn good. I’ve seen the Rolling Stones and wasn’t impressed at all. You could tell that they were just going through the motions. I’ve notice the same with Frankie Beverly and Maze. They’ve done so many concerts in their lives that they can do it in their sleep.

That wasn’t the case at all with KISS.

Just comparing Geritol, AARP eligible bands. KISS was the best.

Professor – Yes I read that article, sad to say the least. High school is a beast. However when I listen to some of the stories my sister tells me about elementary school students I truly wonder which is worse. All the educators I know say middle school is the worst.

Dan – I LOVE Black & white but I think I want to concentrate on more still shots, especially since I have my lil one!

DK, don’t go for any old music storefront guitar teacher. It’ll make a difference in what music styles interest you: classical, jazz, rock, acoustic? I might be able to recommend some good teachers, who’ll go way beyond chord shapes and strumming patterns. I suggest some classical lessons first, no matter where your real interest lies, to learn to read music and get a feel for where guitar repertoire really originates.

It’s never too late to take up a musical instrument!

That is so true… while I still do the latter.. I’m going to ween myself off of that flat iron!!! Sometime I like to flatten the bang then curl it to give it life…

and when I say flat hair.. I mean flat hair with no movement.

Also, I’d recommend springing for used pro-level instruments if you can. You can expect to pay 25-30% less than for new ones. That way, you’re not held back by a lesser instrument, and if you should change your mind about wanting to play a year or 2 two down the road, you can get your money back out of them.

Mo — Well, don’t bless me too much… I did my 1 year tour of duty & got the heck up out of there… Now, I write software — computers don’t talk back. ;-)

Dream — I just wasn’t cut out to deal with high school kids — well, at least not ones that I wasn’t allowed to beat some sense into when necessary. I was an English major because I loved to read & write — and I became a teacher more by default than desire. You have to want to be in it for the kids, and even then you are going to have days when you just want to say F___ it and walk out. I would tell you a story that happened at my school the year that I was there, but I don’t want to be too much of a downer….

As far as hobbies, during my single years, music, movies, and pottery were mine. I met more than a few females at concerts and infinitely more in pottery classes.

My second date with my wife was pottery. We had fruit (grapes) and wine. Well actually it was more like painting pottery that I had already made but hadn’t decorated yet. I called it the “glimpse into my world” date.

I don’t like seeing unhealthy, unkempt hair on women. I mean, it doesn’t have to be fried, dyed or laid to the side. But dry, bunched up roots and stringy ends or hair that looked like it didn’t get the perm pulled all the way through or just lackluster hair period just looks crazy.

I wish that I still played more.

I played the cello until my junior year of High School. Then I focused on football.

I could kick myself. I can still play some but nothing like I would have if I kept it up.

You should pick it back up, Poppa. There are community orchestras that you could get into, geared especially for HS and college players that put their instrument to the side and want to get back into it. Church might be a good playing outlet.

PG – did you like the cello?

I liked that better than the piano but I mastered the piano better. I played the clarinet all through high school. Now that’s what I can play…oh and my mama made sure we all stood around the piano and sang. My sisters play the piano as well and my brothers played piano/drums/violin. My moms was like everybody will do something.

I’m sure there were may obstacles in the way (ie: kids) when teaching… My heart would be with the kids. I am a sucker for turning a bad situation into a miracle. I think for me I want to catch them before they leave the nest so to speak.. Its that fork in the road mentalIty they have.. it’s go off to college or go get a job… While college doesn’t necessarily grant you success in life, it gives you the tools to become successful. I remeber in high school there were so many pregnant girls, kids with unproductive parents, unruly kids, and kids that were trying to make it out of their neighborhood. i want to make a difference in those kids… let them know that ther are choices out there, give them something to hope for… I used to live in milwaukee and when I came to chicago.. The thinkgs they were learning I had learned 2 yrs ago.. It was so sad. The teachrs thought I was a darn genuis when in reality the kids were just not being given the tools necessary to compete with the schools…

Me being a teacher is just the 1st step… I wan to become a principal.. and then who knows where else I can go to make a difference…

Tell me the story swiss!!!!

SCool/Ms Main – Bad hair….where to start! LOL! I hate to see chicks that have long hair for the sake of long hair. Dont do anything with it, never make that length work for them. On the flip side I hate to see chicks with short hair that dont want to keep it up or know how to maintain in between. If you cant afford to keep that short do at least trimmed up then dont go short!! I have a co worker that is hanging on to some split ends!! She has all this length but doesnt realize it looks a mess cause at least 70% is split ends!! I wanna take some scissors to that mop soooo bad!

I liked it. It was tougher than I expected it to be. But I like challenges. I have a issue of not liking to half azz anything. Unfortunately, there is only 24 hours in a day. Playing ball, practicing music, studying in advanced level academic classes all while in high school was just taxing on me. I couldn’t drop school It was really foreshadowing to what was to come next.

Mo – I have a co worker that is hanging on to some split ends!!

Speaking of which…I have a coworker that I would see in the building for years, prior to working on this team. Her hair was always about waist length. She had braids added on top and said it damaged her hair. She had it all cut off and did a light press and pull back in a ball for about 4 months. She had about 5 inches taken off last weekend and someone pressed for her….absolutely gorgeous. It’s growing back and now under her shoulder blades. You can take care of hair and it doesn’t take much to whip back into shape.

U2 was here earlier this month and they sold out the Georgia Dome. I missed that one. I had a midterm the next morning.

The best concert was I’ve seen was Prince during his Hit or Miss tour and he was at Tabernacle. (I like small venues)

Mechelle Ndegocello was a relatively close second.

Michael Jackson was very good also. My first concert ever….The Bad tour. The wife wanted to see him so much that we considered getting tickets to his concerts in London. However, our schedule didn’t work out so that we could have. As it turns out, MJ schedule didn’t work out either……

Rick James/Teena Marie, Quiet Riot, Cinderella, were all good.

Just seeing and enjoying Dizzie Gilliespie was an experience that I’ll never forget

I try not to include Anita, because I am biased. She could sing Mary had a little Lamb and I would be in awe. So, I took her out of contention.

I also kept Sade out of the running too. I spent money to see her here, Madison Square Garden, and in London. It was almost like I stalked her. My wife recently looked at my ipod library (since the itunes site now allows sharing) and said “I take it that you like Sade! LOL” I answered that she is Sweet as Cherry Pie.
