Get a hobby, Find a date

The very wise Lou Holtz once said, “If you’re bored with life — you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things — you don’t have enough goals.”  I happen to agree with him.

I remember my Dad would say that you can actually tell a lot about a man by where he spends most of his time and money. So if he has some over the top obsession or massive porn collection, you might want to pay attention to his habits, including their hobbies.

What kind of hobbies are you in to? How did you get started with it?  (No, dating should NOT be considered a hobby!) What do you think your habits and/or hobbies say about you?

Our friends over at The Frisky listed some hobbies that can make one appealing to the opposite sex.  I am not in favor of picking up a hobby solely to snag a mate, but I definitely love the idea of having/finding a passion for something. If  you happen to meet someone, then it’s time well spent and personal growth. Can’t beat that!

What hobbies would make you sit up and take notice and why?

It was an interesting time for social, political, and cultural upheaval, made for great works of art

The RX7 is nice, and you will also want a mechanic you know and trust if you don’t already have one. Yes the sound of the pipes and engine…I love when I hit the gas and my car roar!

Let me stop talking about cars, because I want to drive right now

I agree.. I also believe it was a great time where christianity really thrived. It was an age of exploration a time of discovery…

I enjoyed the way they talked, the way that could say a simple sentence, but make it seem like a word of art!!

What about the Elizabethen era??? I think that was the most intriguing to me… A time of exploration.

Find your way
Run girl run
Run boy run
Hope springs eternal
Do the needful
Just have faith

Infamous/Professor – I read so much Greek Mythology in high school and then again in college as an English Major. I stopped reading some for a while but it always peaks my interest and whenever I ‘camp out’ at Borders/Barnes & Nobles I look for the Mythology first. I really need to start collecting books on that.

Dan – I loved the Divine Comedy. I had a classmate do her thesis on Dante’s Inferno/Paradiso, girlfriend put it down. I was never big on old Willy Shakespeare til I had to take a whole class on him! Interesting to say the least.

Professor – agreeing with your 10:27 and I ‘heart’ Imitation of Life & Terms of Endearment.

@ DK usually the Pygmalion effect is used or taught with the galatea effect. Yea, I see what you mean with using the Iliad effect.

The Elizabethen Era was more ritualistic for me, it was more about the pomp and circumstance (easily relatable to my disdain for boughie people).

The rebel in me likes the upheaval of the Dark Ages; like the founding of Calvinism, the Lutheran Church, the revolt against the patriarchial and patronizing Catholicism of the time.

For me, those times produce some of the greatest (and lasting) works of the human mind.

CZ, I am a member of Precision Working Dog Club. Is ur guy a member of a club. Does he still have presa’s? If so, from where. I had some friends that went to the monograpica this year.

Well DK you should rewrite all of those business textbooks you would make a killing…lol! I think they are sold retail at $200 a pop. There are other techniques out there named after mythology too, and you have to consider most of the business gurus that are putting a name to these concepts are not speaking or reading Latin…they are reading stock markets and balance sheets trying to make a dollar.

Mo (aka Moeisha)

Infamous – you have a point there, it seemed that there was always (from what I can recall at the moment) some expectation trying to be attained in mythology: love, material/greed, power. I so need to refresh.

Dan – Ummm, yeah. Dont know about reading it for fu, HOWEVER I do see how it could peak your interest. I had to read certain parts of it for 3 separate classes in college and that in and of itself was a bit much

Ms Main – I liked your list chica

Yech… Man, I know it’s great to apply lessons/truths from literature to one’s everyday life, but somehow referencing classic literature within the context of corporate motivational babble just feels akin to whacking it to the Mona Lisa. Just dirty and wrong…. No offense intended… I’m just saying….

and I think that’s why I liked it..
I liked the pyramid aspect so to speak of the

King & Queen
Prince & Princes..

and so forth… Although it could be taken as “bougie”.. I think it was an era that some of our people may need to go back to…

The wanted to spead christianity to the “heathens” so to speak. They had manners, proper dialect, and proper etiquette… well for those in power for the most part.

Now the Dark Ages while interesting.. I’m so tires of the whole good Vs evil. light vs dark crap that. that time typically portrays… Was that the time of the Fall of Rome???

I have a ton of hobbies and interest…mostly creative and crafty type things to do…sewing, knitting, beading, cooking, soap and candle making…lots of stuff to do…and I can truly appreciate someone who also has some sort of engaging interests as well…I love woodworking, but lack the space, equipment, or other resources to be able to invest in a serious interest in doing many projects related to that area of crafts production…so someone who had that interest and the things to work with would be a viable interest…I also like to do some outdoors type activities…like hiking, etc…so that would also be of a mutually viable interest…it may not lead to any long term type relationship, but it would contribute to common interests of activities.

@Swiss start whacking because if you look at most marketing campaigns they derived from some type of art, music, literature as the concept etc.

Why would business not borrow these concepts or make reference to them when it works? Also using them helps keep the art or literature alive, because not everyone is interested in reading them in their natural environment

Again, the Prince and Princess, King and Queen meme does nothing for me. “Let them eat cake” (whether historically accurate or not) is all I think of when I think Victorian. And don’t get me started on the “spreading of Christianity”.

The fall of Rome would be more pointedly characterized by Nero and Ceaser’s freaky great grandson (whose name escapes me). It was a time of societal complancency that allowed hungrier nations to bite off pieces (sound familiar?).

Tazzee so should i call yoga a hobby? i’m with you, i’ve always just thought of that as my daily workout/inner peace time. i don’t consider movies, travel or shopping hobbies either, but i enjoy them and do them all the time.

so what consitutes a hobby? is it anything you enjoy doing in your spare time or does it have to have some creative/talent element?

BTW, Prof, I was and English Ed major & taught 9th & 11th grade Lit & composition in my younger days. My advice to your niece: if she really wants to teach, do so at the college level — and in that case, she needn’t worry about the education courses (which are worthless anyway), just stick with her Lit major & continue on to graduate programs. High school is a horror show.
