Get a hobby, Find a date

The very wise Lou Holtz once said, “If you’re bored with life — you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things — you don’t have enough goals.”  I happen to agree with him.

I remember my Dad would say that you can actually tell a lot about a man by where he spends most of his time and money. So if he has some over the top obsession or massive porn collection, you might want to pay attention to his habits, including their hobbies.

What kind of hobbies are you in to? How did you get started with it?  (No, dating should NOT be considered a hobby!) What do you think your habits and/or hobbies say about you?

Our friends over at The Frisky listed some hobbies that can make one appealing to the opposite sex.  I am not in favor of picking up a hobby solely to snag a mate, but I definitely love the idea of having/finding a passion for something. If  you happen to meet someone, then it’s time well spent and personal growth. Can’t beat that!

What hobbies would make you sit up and take notice and why?

My hobbies (as they change) really only signify my interest in a given subject at that time.

As for having hobbies to attract a mate, there is some relevance to that. When a person is comfortable in an environment and with themselves it radiates (see AB’s comments about attached women yesterday).

As for what would make me take notice? Whatever hobby she has: wearing high heels (or boots), tight clothing, and a smile whilst performing said hobby.

Morning, Do women have hobbies?!?..

If she could cook, I guess I would take notice. That seems to be such a rarity nowadays. How do you not know how to make cornbread, I mean really.. If shopping is a hobby, I wouldn’t take notice. Unless you know how to save money while shopping… If gossiping is a hobby I wouldn’t take notice, but that seems to be a favorite. If she is an avid reader I would take notice, because at least I know there is some quiet time…

I like to read; he doesn’t. He likes to cook; I don’t. However, we both enjoy watching & playing sports, and we both love dogs. We often stroll out to the dog park, and just this past weekend we went to another protection competition.

I don’t think I would notice a man more for his chosen hobby, but meeting someone who is into something different does allow an opportunity to learn new things. I’ve challenged him to read TD Jakes, and he helps me hone my skills in the kitchen.

czBrat – the same is true for my relationship. Also we both love working out.

I always thought hobbies to be something that one does regularly, purely for pleasure. That is why I don’t list working out as a hobby – for me it’s a necessity. Also why I don’t list travel as a hobby – it’s purely for pleasure but I don’t do it nearly enough.

I enjoy watching men play musical instruments, but I’ve always thought musicians to be a little off, so I would be wary of dating one. But I do check out musicians, particularly drummers for some reason.

I wonder if singing karaoke can be considered a hobby?

I can’t say that I have a specific hobby that I enjoy consistantly. I think it just depends on what I am into at the moment…..

Although watching footbal would be at the top of my list right now… :)

Merning folks.

Having a hobby is a great way of releasing some of lifes pressure. My hobbies, as I’ve noted, are training dogs, shooting pool and fine watches. My absolute love is dog training. Through dogs I met my last gf and a ton of people I otherwise wouldnt have met. I also used my dogs to generate income for my real estate business. Its what I’d do all day everyday if I didnt have to earn a living.

CZ, what competition did you attend? What kind of dogs do you have? I had presa canarios.

My hobbies are playing music, golf, antiques, travel. We’ve re-landscaped and re-decorated, but I wouldn’t call it a hobby, although we sure seem to watch a lot of those DIY TV shows — man, I’m over those, but she still likes them.

I don’t think I’ve ever really met anyone or scored dates from pursuit of hobbies, but the more those kinds of things match up, the more compatibility there is.

Morning All!

Tazzee – I like musicians too, guess b/c I played an instrument. But to take a line from my favorite movie…”My mother said to never date a musician, you will be inviting pain & heartache into your life”..LOL! Seriously though, I have always thought musicians to be a little ‘interesting’ as well. Personally I dig trumpet players…the sax players, drummers.

Hobbies. Like Infamous I LOVE music, especially live music. I like shopping for new scents, whether for the house or a perfume/oil for myself. I like ’smell goods’. Love sports, football/basketball/baseball/tennis/gymnastics/ice skating…..I like watching all those. One thing I would love to get into though is photography, I like capturing moments so to speak. Oh and my secret interest/hobby….I love reading Greek Mythology, dont know why but something about it really grabs me.

Professor – have you been to a Hookah (sp) bar?

Playing softball.
Reading CTNs (cheap trashy novels), urban romance, self-help, finance books.
Bowling.
Tennis.
Golf – (Mostly just like hitting balls on the range as opposed to playing a round.)
Exercise.
Poetry.
Blogging.
Watching the world rotate on its axis while sitting on my patio drinking some muscato and listening to great music.
Debating.
Movies.
And I could go on.

The thing about musicians is that they’re likely to be more interested in music than in you — you’ll always take 2nd place. There’s always more chicks to be found on gigs, and relationships are rarely on a musician’s agenda, anyway. That, along with their being broke most of the time, is the drawback to dating musicians.

Professor

October 27th, 2009

@DK…we use the Pygmalion effect all the time in training and business, but look at where that concept and name was taken from Pygmalion fell in love with a statue and was so enthralled he believed in this ivory statue and would not date a “real woman” so Aphrodite gave the statue life.

As for business when you set high expectations that are higher than normal and believe in what you are doing those that you are training succeeds beyond the average standard. So you have to “believe.”
