She Only Loves in Stereotypes

I recall having conversations about politics with friends after President Obama won the election. We were discussing if this would mark the beginning of a post-racial America and what that really meant. What would happen if we began to see one another simply as people? How would it change how we perceive one another if we could interact without stereotypes?

If were to be honest about it, we all have stereotypes and prejudices about people: gender, racial, cultural, socioeconomic, you name it, we’ve all had them or fought them. The one that I battle personally the most: Black women are too angry and have too much attitude. I am super friendly, smile all the time, and I’m opinionated. Does it bother me to get stereotyped? Sometimes it does, sometimes I don’t care. I can only really worry about working on my own stereotypes I have about other people.

Dating stereotypes. What do you think we can do about them? Is it good to discuss them and address them head on? Do you think some things are better left unsaid? Have you missed out on the opportunity to date someone because you got hung up on some stereotype? Do you regret it?

When I was growing up, my mother told me to never date someone from any culture that “treats women like second class citizens” ie Africans, West Indians, and some Latinos…I held onto that advice for several years. Last year I met a sexy, successful, hard-working, wonderful man who just happened to be Jamaican. Needless to say, that stereotype went right out the window…he’s my own personal Dexter St. Jock;)

Good Morning All,

Hmmm I don’t think there is much we can do about the sterotypes. All the convo in the world is not going to change what is in some person’s version of the truth. I mean you can address them but again it is up to the individual to want to change their preception. Heck I have my own sterotypes about men. Let’s see..

1. All short men have complexes about being short and they try to hard.

2. All dark chocolate men have complexes about being too dark.

3. All light chocolate men think they are too cute to poot..even the cross-eyed missing tooth dudes.

4. All men who were in frats in college and still wear said gear at the ripe old age of 50plus have a hard time with individuality and are the classic example of sheeple mentality.

5. All tall guys are packing..(this sterotype has been proven incorrect time and time again..and yet one does hold out hope.)

Well, I think, as WD stated, that we are all prone to stereotyping ppl based upon 1) a valid and rational assessment criteria (i.e. experiences or observations that have frequently presented themselves) or 2) from a personal bias and self-imposed limitation in dealing with others deemed “alien” or “foreign” (i.e unknown and unfamiliar to us)…but this does not mean that we can absolutely determine all ppl of any one particular group to have a collective behavior or attitude…in may be more prevalent in some ppl of that group…but not exclusive to them.

But yes, I have been stereotyped some of the typically associated patterns of behaviors assigned to us as a “group”…needless to say, they are the furthest thing from the truth about me…what I have learned is that it is usually the bigoted view of the other that “creates” this perception, not what I convey from within self…and it has become a point of amusement for me as I have grown older…nothing like a fool opening the mouth and letting me know what kind of arse I am dealing with upfront…makes my exit strategy a lot easier…lol.

As for myself, I am very much aware of my own biases regarding others…but rather than impose that preconceived perception on another person, I will allow each individual to define, articulate and express self first…and if that person then conveys a behavior or attitude that lends itself to the “stereotype”…so be it…I left the door open…ain’t my fault if they walked into the wall…lol

@WD…Good Morning

“The one that I battle personally the most: Black women are too angry and have too much attitude.” The sad thing about stereotypes, whether one is black, white, pink or purple is that because a few have exhibited these qualities, ALL get tarred with the same brush. Are all whites racist, no, most I know do not even have it on their minds much at all…but because there are a few jackazzes with half their teeth missing who never graduated from grade school, we all get branded. Are all blacks carjakers and thugs, no, but because some are, all get branded. At the end of the day electing a black president may make some difference, but the real answer has to come from within…judging everyone individually for his/her strengths and flaws. But because of a few azzholes of all races, stereotypes continue. We should all be colorblind.

Re: Dating stereotypes

I do a lot of Internet dating. One of the things I always look at is whether the lady indicates that she likes men 5′10″ or more. On a really good day if I stand up straght, I might almost touch 5′9″ and short of climbing on to the “Rack” in the Tower of London and letting them start craking, I will never be tall. It is usually simpler to just let them go their own way than to try to convince them that looking into a guy’s eyes can be just as good as looking at his neck. But, it is what it is.

In dating, people have the right to seek whatever they think they want. It is not for any of us to question that, stereotype or not.

Morning all,

I don’t think I miss out on people because of stereotypes, it’s probably more so of perference.

Yes, the guy with the cornrows, white tee and grill probably is just misunderstood. Yeah, I’ll never know.

Maybe short guys are better than the tall ones. I’ll probably never know that one either.

Yeah, you should see past his kids and baby mamas. I’ll still pass.

It’s not about what the stereotypes say, it’s about what I say.

I grew up in an Interracial household, mom is white pops is black, so interracial dating/marriages were/are nothing to me. However, regarding stereotypes, we all see them, deal with them, and/or judge people based on them. Is it fair? Nah. But we do. Not only about race, religion, ethnicities, but also gender. Why is it that people STILL believe a woman’s place is at home in the kitchen?? Come on now, in this day and age, more and more women are out makin just as much bread as the next man, sometimes even more.

To add to Kym’s.

All black men are packin…ha! While a lot are, there are quite a few that can’t fit the gold boy they claim to wear.

Skinny ninjas have the biggest dikks. I’ve seen that to be true in a lot of cases, but not all.

If they consider themselves average than short would be around 5′5-5′7 and I dont see many men in that range??? Just wondering …

Good morning.

Although we are asked “not to judge a book by it’s cover” we always do. Getting past sterotypes is a daily battle. Getting past the superficiality of a person to get to the root of who they are takes a lot of work that most no longer care to labor at. Personally, I try really hard to take people at face value and, as M’ so eloquently stated, if you walk into that wall, it’s all on you!

One of my major sterotypes is a skinny man and a skinny woman…bones clacking everywhere.

@Kym, what the heck is “sheeple” and why is the sunshine gone?

I also think that it is more a matter of preference with me. I try not to stereotype people because I battle them everyday. For example, I am single and I have four children so therefore most men I meet think that I am easy or that I am searching for a father for my kids. I am neither. I am a black woman, so of course, I must be angry, I am not. I am a relatively quiet person, so therefore, I must be unhappy, I am not. People are always asking me what’s wrong? because I happen to be a quiet person, the only thing that is wrong is people keep asking me what’s wrong.

I belive the national average height for a man is 5′10″

I do believe they are grown shorter in other areas. When I lived in the Boston area, there were a lot of short men there. They all had phDs, but weren’t very tall. I think it’s the lack of sun. They don’t grow.

Since I’ve been in ATL, I haven’t dated a guy shorter than 6′2″, primarily because there are a lot more options out here.

Hmmm stereotypes…can be interesting things. When I was younger, I allowed stereotypes to dictate my interaction with men. In my best Beyonce voice, “he’s too short, he’s too bright, etc”. I was raised to be open-minded and got sucked into stereotypes based on my group of peers. Didn’t want to be the odd one out.

I am a little older now and enjoy the company of the range of people. I allow everyone I come in contact with a clean slate. I will give a person a shot, because some of the best things come in the not so pretty package.

I don’t want a post-racial America. We need to see the differences and embrace them. Now I would love a post-racist America but I know that ain’t going to happen.

I used to have a bunch of silly stereotypes. For instance I thought that a man with a white car was gay  Well, not REALLY gay, but I thought a man that bought a white car was suspect.

I admit to being guilty of judging a book by it’s cover, but at the same time I like to prove myself wrong – so I try to see beyond that cover.

As far as dating stereotypes – yup, I got them. But they are more along the lines of what AmRed listed – preferences/stereotypes, whatever. I’m not dating the guy with multiple babies by different women.

When it comes to dating, there’s such a fine line between dating “preferences” and not going out with someone because of a stereotype. I personally would not date someone who has an iced out grill, baggy pants, tatted up etc. That’s my preference….but could it also be because I believe that he may have little respect for women, lots of kids and baby mamas, no job, and smokes weed all day??? When I was dating, I never really stereotyped women or anything like that. If I turned down a woman, it was more of a preference than a stereotype. I’ve never believed in the notion that all black women have attitudes, or that single mothers were super sluts, or any of that nonsense.

As for that woman and the false rape charge: She should be locked up for many many years and have her uterus ripped out with a pair of rusty needle nose pliers. Those are images that do tend to conjure up some prevalent stereotypes about certain groups of ppl affiliated with those things…probably as much as my dreads do for some ppl also…but behind each projected image is a personal identity with volition and free will…so while I do have preferences for what appeals or does not appeal to me…I often times will ask a person about his/her personal motivation for doing something…like with tatts…I am interested in finding out why it was done…what is the meaning of the tatts, etc…baggy pants, I write of to contemporary youth culture…except when old dawg in like in his 40’s sporting that style…lol…but there is a very big distinction between preferences and stereotypes.

I like to wear tight jeans so the ladies can see what im working wit.. Ha ha ha ha!! Imagine that..

I wear my pants to drape nicely. Cuff hitting the shoes just enough to bend the crease. Fitting so I can put things in my pockets with out it looking like Im happy to see everybody and of course if I get the unexpected boner I can put my hand in my pocket and play it off. Pi-yow!

Otay now…some simple logic…I have a preference for red shoes over black…where is the stereotype????…I simply prefer the color red…now, if I believe that red shoes are only worn by children and whores…lol, as some do believe…then I have applied a stereotype to red shoes…otay….thank you.

I was just reading that…WTF ditto…the world done gone completely mad, inhumane and insane.

My stereotypes, like anybody else’s,mean im biased.
It dont mean those biases are accurate,on point nor warranted. It just means we all myopic smetimes and it takes some consiousness to get rid of those biases.
Growing up, i used to say that i wld neva date a chic with a kid. That changed at some point.Im sure and i hope my other stereotypes will fade with more awareness and learning of other pples.

A-Red thanks for clarification. Personally I do have a child. A beautiful 4 year old son. Being private about the circumstances, it is just him and I now. I don’t feel that there would be any cause for concern in that situation. Is your concern with the child? It is definitely not his fault. The father? Could be a very good man with very unfortunate circumstances. Or the “mamma”? even if she is no longer with us.

I got a couple more stereotypes for ya…

All overweight women secretly hate thin ones

White ppl who have a slightly wider than average nose or hair that frizzes whenever it rains have black blood and don’t know it

<strong. It’s hard to admit that we all are guilty of judging someone by their cover but we ALL do it everyday!!

Well, there is a difference between prejudice (the thought) and discrimination (the behavior)…we can have a plethora of prejudices about anyone and everything…and that is a rather innocuous issue…but when we act on those thoughts by conveying behaviors of discrimination…then we are engaging in a negative perpetuation of bigotry in motion.

Humble – The concern is that I don’t want to be an instant parent. I’m not even sure I want kids of my own.

You should be concerned with anyone not willing to embrace your son and who didn’t want to be a parent to him.

Hmmm…good point! Now one could say that “preference” is a form of discrimination…right?? If you only date tall men aren’t you discriminating against short men?? See…it’s not all black and white. There is a gray area! Which brings me back to my initial point…preferences and stereotypes go hand and hand :) Great posts today!!!

Melo – Not really a justification but we are here discussing stereotypes and my assumption is that the discussion is meant to break them or at least acknowledge that they can be incorrect. I have been reading this the last few days and it seems the same old story. Women always complain about wanting a “Good Man” and not being able to find a “good man”. In actuality a “Good Man” is not at all what they are looking for is it? Now don’t get me wrong, I fully understand attraction and personal preference as I have a few of my own. But if I am attracted to someone and I haven’t even had a chance to analyze the situation, just have a child is not a disqualification. We are not 18 anymore.

A-Red – If a man is asking you to be an “Instant Parent” then I would understand. Its just like a woman looking for a daddy for her kid. I would never go for that myself. I handle everything and every responsibility, want and need that my child has. I never expect anyone to be anything to him except accepting. No one should be asking you to take on that responsibility.

true dat Humble but a negative stereotype is just a pref, a way of weeding out what u dont like,at face value, so that u concentrate on what u actually like.Personal prefs are just that, personal. It dont make them “right”,”accurate” nor “factual”
One man’s meat is another’s poison.
If u get that then ull understand and gravitate towards those who like what u got.

You are RIGHT about that! I can usually spot them a mile away because my own family is so diverse…there was a great deal of passing after the civil war and the result is a whole sect of people who don’t know or choose not to acknowledge that they have black blood.

Humble my post to you got eaten, so I’ll try it again.

I date with a purpse. And I want to one day be married. That’s what I mean about “instant parent.” I can not marry a man with a child without his child being a factor. That kid still needs to be love and provided for.

I think people who say they don’t want a parent for their child in dating are not rooted in reality, or they only want do do a casual thing. How can the two most important people in your life (your kid and your s/o) not be intertwined?

A child is a person and not a habit you can get rid of. You need to factor in a child from the JUMP. Otherwise, why waste everyone’s time?
