I watched the film The Ugly Truth in mild amusement, like I do most films about male-female dynamics. While the movie is meant to be entertaining, it kind of highlights a lot of what goes on with gender biases and social perceptions of men and women.
The male lead character basically describes men as the simple creatures who will do and say whatever it takes to bed a woman. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it’s a romantic comedy.
It did make me look further into the notion that men and women can both be ethically ambiguous. I read somewhere that that socialists consider a component of “ambivalent sexism” in the theory of benevolent sexism: “Women compared to men, tend to have a superior moral sensibility”. They actually conducted studies and claim that “women have a superior moral and ethical fortitude as compared to men”. I don’t know about that one!
It lends itself to male vs. female battle but we already know we are different. What are your thoughts? Should we really give credibility to these kind of studies?

Maybe it’s just a case of the Mondays or maybe I just kicked it too hard this weekend…but HUH? What is this topic about?
I did go see the movie though and found it to be one of the funnier romantic comedies. This is one I think a guy would actually enjoy.
Happy Monday everyone!

Good Morning, All!
I haven’t seen the movie, but based off advertisements it seems to play off the typical male/female stereotype. In regards to the studies, I think they should be taken with a grain of salt.
Sidenote: Tried the california rolls at Strip..not too terrible, but I think I will try it at some of the places you all mentioned Friday. I will say the drink Bubble bath was my thing.

Good morning,
I haven’t seen the movie (prolly won’t).
In relation to your question, WD, I think women do have a higher moral sensability than men (superior may be a step too far). Personally, I don’t find it to be a bad thing.
Having a higher moral sensability keeps some women off the pole (still the best topic title ever), from having children before their ready, and in general from participating in destructive behavior.
We men get the luxury of “being men”. We can do stupid things, chalk it up to testoterone and typically be excused for it without being viewed negatively.
“Should we give credibility to these studies?” We already do, there called “double standards”.

Good Morning All,
I agree with Dan, the only credit these studies give is the double standard. Think about the subject of cheating(that one comes up once a week) or even sleeping around. Remember a week ago the sowing of wild oats..with guys its expected..if a woman does it(break out your Victorian hoopskirts.) It really is a timeless battle of the double standards. Women are to be soft and light, held in high regards(morally upright) while Men are expected to be hard and dark….(sorry I blanked out for a sec) and expected to screw up now and again.

chalk it up to testoterone
so what happens when women hit that “chalk it up” zone..usually around 27-29 when they are nailing anything with two leggs…then they hit 30 and decide ok now its time for me to pack away my whorish ways and find a “good man”…lol….we men finally wake up say around 45 THEN we look for a “good woman”..lol

It is a well known common truth that double standards do exist. I am okay with that. I just get in where I fit in. And yes we women are held to a higher standard of morals and ethics than men are. But what can you do about it? Date like a man??? I think not. That doesn’t give you male status, it just gives you a bad look.
The ugly truth is they do it for the kitty. Or the possibility of obtaining it. Nearly everything a man does to get to a relationship, building a relationship and in the relationship, they do for the kitty. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying men are not capable of performing duties out of love for their mate however the ugly truth is they do if for the kitty. Guys tend to be more active, giving and attentive to the relationships where the kitty is accessible.

Good Morning all!
I have not seen the movie but to answer your question, I definitely think there are double standards that we live by and I agree with Dan we make these studies credible because we live them out.
For example, If a woman has an extensive dating history she either can’t keep a man or there is something wrong with her but, when a man does the same thing he is a player or deemed to be “The Man” women are rarely given the “luxury” of “working out” their life without it being percieved as a problem or having issues.
For Example: When women stray from their marriage they are 1) unhappy 2) confused 3)abused by or had issues with a parent, etc.
But when a man strays, he is 1)a scum bag 2) sex addict 3)doesn’t know a good thing when he has it.
Now, with that said, when a woman misbehaves she is 1)crazy 2)has anger issues 3) is not polished.
When a man misbehaves the ‘boys will be boys’ attitude prevails.
Women are usually expected to be the better parent, the better person and have a higher moral compass. What I find truly sad with women is(our lack of solidarity, when we promote these sterotypes against each other) Feel me on this, bottem line it’s not fair!! But it’s the world we live in.
Have a great day!

It’s just as stereotypical as men’s supposed total preoccupation with getting laid: chicks are catty, secretive, manipulative, mendacious, and will cheat in a heartbeat. 75-80% of AA babies born to unwed mothers last year doesn’t indicate a higher moral sensibility on their behalf, nor on behalf of their sperm donors.
To have to work for a woman is to have to deal with a lack of moral and ethical sensibility.
If you are lucky enough to have a woman of high moral and ethical sensibility, consider marriage! It illustrates a character that exceeds the stereotypical norm by a mile — it has to, in order for that to be true.

Side convo: I think what you’re speaking of is the “subjective morality” that we (male/female) all exhibit.
I’d like to say that I’ve met nothing but high moral character women, but that wouldn’t be true. Nor would it hold true for men. And neither would hold true enough to establish a percentage.
Situational ethics is more to the point, and using that knowledge certainly helps me seperate moral from immoral and square from down.

‘Course, Dan. It does illustrate the folly of considering a romantic comedy such as the one cited as having much to do with the way people really are.
Folks tend to think of themselves most highly, crediting their lapses to necessity, and/or protective reactions to other peoples’ turpitude. Moral behavior is defined by religion; for Christians, the New Testament contains the definition of morality. Measured by that standard, most of us are not very moral.

I dare say you’ll find no one willing to claim perfection. Rather by a 3rd party code (religion) or one’s on ethos.
My point is to allow for the failings of individual to be prescribed to that individual, not to entire gender, race, etc.
The world and people are a lot less cynical that we (each) project.

On topic – I like romantic comedies, so I’ll probably end up seeing that movie. But it’s Monday and I have so much work to do that I don’t feel like THINKING and analyzing the topic today, so I’ll just lurk. I will say that we all know men & women are different – and that’s a GOOD thing! Both can offer their voice of REASON in different situations. Yin to Yang, the natural order of things, balance. Problems arise when one tries to (or has to) take on the role of the other. Just not the way things are designed.

Spirituality without religion of one kind or another doesn’t seem to make sense, to me. ‘Spirituality’, as in, affected or inhabited or focused upon a supernatural, i.e., non-physical entity, influence, source of energy — if it’s not a spirit associated with religion, what is it?

Ared, I’m single, and it’s not because I observe the Sabbath, I know people who don’t observe the Sabbath that don’t eat pork or shell fish…..I eat still eat them, I bless my food as required…..what eat is not relevant, it’s what comes out of my mouth/heart that’s relevant.

Vick has already met with Green Bay officials. I keep hearing the Redskins too. (Danny Snyder would love it if it closer to that elusive trophy that he has been trying to buy)

Grace – I was asking if you were single because I know someone who observes the Sabbath as well. I was asking because I was gonna hook you up.
But since you still eat pork and shellfish, nevermind. This guy is great but orthodox in his SDA faith, so a lot of women don’t qualify.

you really really think that it is through religion that you gain oneness with God?
I was wondering the same thing?….

In layman’s terms a religion is an organized and structured belief system, however spirituality is generally neither focusing more on an individuals beliefs than a groups. Religion is man’s limited attempt to reach out and understand God. Spirituality is God reaching down to man and inspiring man’s mind to understand and know Him. God is a Spirt the only way to relate to God is spiritually, the word spirit in the ancient Greek text means “life”. Being religious is following after a religious teaching about God. Being spiritual is seeking after the truth to know God, to know life. So, if want to “know” God you have to learn to “know” Him on a spiritual level. If you want to know “about” God then you join a denomination or some religious sect where men will teach you “about” God or whatever you decide to follow

Spirituality comes from within you. Religion comes from outside of you.
Spirituality is the self understanding of your reality through your submition of whatever your higher power is. Higher power is the concept of believing in something beyond your power, beyond your intellect, or a peak of ones own knowledge, however one decides to decipher their higher power renders their own definition of God.
Nothing or no one can give you spirituality. But many can give you religion if allow them too.

Let Demi answer in his own way.
But for me spirituality and religion can be two different things. Sometimes they are linked, sometimes not (based on the individual, of course).
For me religion is a set of beliefs: personal and intimate. Spirituality is the essence of that belief of a “higher power” or the interconnectivity of Man in general.
I think you can be spiritual without being particularly religious (or have your beliefs tied to a particlar doctrine of faith); and that a person can experience religion via spirituality.
