The Ugly Truth

I watched the film The Ugly Truth in mild amusement, like I do most films about male-female dynamics. While the movie is meant to be entertaining, it kind of highlights a lot of what goes on with gender biases and social perceptions of men and women.

The male lead character basically describes men as the simple creatures who will do and say whatever it takes to bed a woman. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it’s a romantic comedy.

It did make me look further into the notion that men and women can both be ethically ambiguous. I read somewhere that that socialists consider a component of “ambivalent sexism” in the theory of benevolent sexism: “Women compared to men, tend to have a superior moral sensibility”. They actually conducted studies and claim that “women have a superior moral and ethical fortitude as compared to men”. I don’t know about that one!

It lends itself to male vs. female battle but we already know we are different. What are your thoughts? Should we really give credibility to these kind of studies?

Maybe it’s just a case of the Mondays or maybe I just kicked it too hard this weekend…but HUH? What is this topic about?

I did go see the movie though and found it to be one of the funnier romantic comedies. This is one I think a guy would actually enjoy.

Happy Monday everyone!

Good Morning, All!

I haven’t seen the movie, but based off advertisements it seems to play off the typical male/female stereotype. In regards to the studies, I think they should be taken with a grain of salt.

Sidenote: Tried the california rolls at Strip..not too terrible, but I think I will try it at some of the places you all mentioned Friday. I will say the drink Bubble bath was my thing.

Good morning,

I haven’t seen the movie (prolly won’t).

In relation to your question, WD, I think women do have a higher moral sensability than men (superior may be a step too far). Personally, I don’t find it to be a bad thing.

Having a higher moral sensability keeps some women off the pole (still the best topic title ever), from having children before their ready, and in general from participating in destructive behavior.

We men get the luxury of “being men”. We can do stupid things, chalk it up to testoterone and typically be excused for it without being viewed negatively.

“Should we give credibility to these studies?” We already do, there called “double standards”.

Good Morning All,

I agree with Dan, the only credit these studies give is the double standard. Think about the subject of cheating(that one comes up once a week) or even sleeping around. Remember a week ago the sowing of wild oats..with guys its expected..if a woman does it(break out your Victorian hoopskirts.) It really is a timeless battle of the double standards. Women are to be soft and light, held in high regards(morally upright) while Men are expected to be hard and dark….(sorry I blanked out for a sec) and expected to screw up now and again.

chalk it up to testoterone

so what happens when women hit that “chalk it up” zone..usually around 27-29 when they are nailing anything with two leggs…then they hit 30 and decide ok now its time for me to pack away my whorish ways and find a “good man”…lol….we men finally wake up say around 45 THEN we look for a “good woman”..lol

It is a well known common truth that double standards do exist. I am okay with that. I just get in where I fit in. And yes we women are held to a higher standard of morals and ethics than men are. But what can you do about it? Date like a man??? I think not. That doesn’t give you male status, it just gives you a bad look.

The ugly truth is they do it for the kitty. Or the possibility of obtaining it. Nearly everything a man does to get to a relationship, building a relationship and in the relationship, they do for the kitty. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying men are not capable of performing duties out of love for their mate however the ugly truth is they do if for the kitty. Guys tend to be more active, giving and attentive to the relationships where the kitty is accessible.

Good Morning all!

I have not seen the movie but to answer your question, I definitely think there are double standards that we live by and I agree with Dan we make these studies credible because we live them out.

For example, If a woman has an extensive dating history she either can’t keep a man or there is something wrong with her but, when a man does the same thing he is a player or deemed to be “The Man” women are rarely given the “luxury” of “working out” their life without it being percieved as a problem or having issues.

For Example: When women stray from their marriage they are 1) unhappy 2) confused 3)abused by or had issues with a parent, etc.

But when a man strays, he is 1)a scum bag 2) sex addict 3)doesn’t know a good thing when he has it.

Now, with that said, when a woman misbehaves she is 1)crazy 2)has anger issues 3) is not polished.

When a man misbehaves the ‘boys will be boys’ attitude prevails.

Women are usually expected to be the better parent, the better person and have a higher moral compass. What I find truly sad with women is(our lack of solidarity, when we promote these sterotypes against each other) Feel me on this, bottem line it’s not fair!! But it’s the world we live in.

Have a great day! :)

It’s just as stereotypical as men’s supposed total preoccupation with getting laid: chicks are catty, secretive, manipulative, mendacious, and will cheat in a heartbeat. 75-80% of AA babies born to unwed mothers last year doesn’t indicate a higher moral sensibility on their behalf, nor on behalf of their sperm donors.

To have to work for a woman is to have to deal with a lack of moral and ethical sensibility.

If you are lucky enough to have a woman of high moral and ethical sensibility, consider marriage! It illustrates a character that exceeds the stereotypical norm by a mile — it has to, in order for that to be true.

Side convo: I think what you’re speaking of is the “subjective morality” that we (male/female) all exhibit.

I’d like to say that I’ve met nothing but high moral character women, but that wouldn’t be true. Nor would it hold true for men. And neither would hold true enough to establish a percentage.

Situational ethics is more to the point, and using that knowledge certainly helps me seperate moral from immoral and square from down.

‘Course, Dan. It does illustrate the folly of considering a romantic comedy such as the one cited as having much to do with the way people really are.

Folks tend to think of themselves most highly, crediting their lapses to necessity, and/or protective reactions to other peoples’ turpitude. Moral behavior is defined by religion; for Christians, the New Testament contains the definition of morality. Measured by that standard, most of us are not very moral.

I dare say you’ll find no one willing to claim perfection. Rather by a 3rd party code (religion) or one’s on ethos.

My point is to allow for the failings of individual to be prescribed to that individual, not to entire gender, race, etc.

The world and people are a lot less cynical that we (each) project.

I will say that we all know men & women are different – and that’s a GOOD thing! Both can offer their voice of REASON in different situations. Yin to Yang, the natural order of things, balance. you really really think that it is through religion that you gain oneness with God?

I was wondering the same thing?….

W8©

@Page-Okay

In layman’s terms a religion is an organized and structured belief system, however spirituality is generally neither focusing more on an individuals beliefs than a groups. Religion is man’s limited attempt to reach out and understand God. Spirituality is God reaching down to man and inspiring man’s mind to understand and know Him. God is a Spirt the only way to relate to God is spiritually, the word spirit in the ancient Greek text means “life”. Being religious is following after a religious teaching about God. Being spiritual is seeking after the truth to know God, to know life. So, if want to “know” God you have to learn to “know” Him on a spiritual level. If you want to know “about” God then you join a denomination or some religious sect where men will teach you “about” God or whatever you decide to follow

W8©

August 10th, 2009
11:35 am

Spirituality comes from within you. Religion comes from outside of you.
Spirituality is the self understanding of your reality through your submition of whatever your higher power is. Higher power is the concept of believing in something beyond your power, beyond your intellect, or a peak of ones own knowledge, however one decides to decipher their higher power renders their own definition of God.
Nothing or no one can give you spirituality. But many can give you religion if allow them too.

Dan

@abc

Let Demi answer in his own way.

But for me spirituality and religion can be two different things. Sometimes they are linked, sometimes not (based on the individual, of course).

For me religion is a set of beliefs: personal and intimate. Spirituality is the essence of that belief of a “higher power” or the interconnectivity of Man in general.

I think you can be spiritual without being particularly religious (or have your beliefs tied to a particlar doctrine of faith); and that a person can experience religion via spirituality.

Vick met with Green Bay officials late last week. They don’t have a single owner like most franchises so there is not a single guy that can lurk over the GM/Pres and veto the move. They are publicly owned (mostly by their fans), and have a board of directors instead of a Jerry Jones, Al Davis or Comcast -style owner.

They are one of the few teams that have not publicly ruled Vick out either.

ON a serious note a God’s groupie is when a person starts putting Church (Notice I said Church not God) in front of what God has ordained for them or their own family and life..i.e. not taking care of home or your marriage is falling apart under the guise of one just serving the Church…

I can relate to that. It’s a book title I saw a while ago, “I’m fine with God, it’s Christians I can’t stand!”.

The thing about Christian churches is they seem to strive to get the congregation to worship the church. Just the same, I’m not so sure that unidentified inklings, suspicions or intuitions that there is a supernatural higher power that remains unknown and undefined connotes Spirituality.

One can take a Zen and existential approach to life, with journey as destination, becoming one with the Universe, and I’m not so sure I could say that was Spirituality. An opposite to that would be to say that I have a spirit that I focus on, feed and nurture, and in that way I’m Spiritual. It just doesn’t seem to embody the concept.

To answer an earlier question, whether a person can become one with God only through religion: I wouldn’t say that a person can ‘become one with God’. God is, to me, a distinct entity, Trinity notwithstanding. The only way to know God is through religion, even if you never set foot in a church, synagogue, or temple your whole life. Maybe people introduced you to Godly concepts through organized religion, maybe you read some books, or maybe God spoke or interacted directly with you, but to just pick it out of the air on your own is… well, super-intuitive, I suppose.

No such thing as spiritual. You can’t base your spirituality off a religion and say you spiritual. Taking bits and pieces from the various religion makes you a non-domination religious person.

I just started going back this year after giving it up for about 20yrs.. I still prayed but I told myself I dont have to go to church cause a preacher cant save my soul. He cant but its good to hear some good news you can use every now and again. I was raised in the church in a church where the entire family went. Its funny cause I just realized one day that I wanted to go and hear some word and just kinda stumbled into this church and been going every since. Man I went in there and ole dude was preachin the gospel and spoke to me, I think I even shedded a tear or two cause I knew I had been out there and way wrong. Well put. Unfortunately, not too many pastor/bishop/preachers have truly been called to perform His work in my opinion. Instead we have men and women in robes chasing the almighty dollar and asking parishoners (many who are struggling financially themselves) to help them live a life of luxury. Many family members and friends contend that Sunday is the new Sabbath or Saturday is no longer the Sabbath and that the Sabbath was nailed to the cross, but how can that be, the 10 commandents didn’t all of a sudden became the 9 commandments. The Sabbath was established since the beginning of time. On the seventh day God rested which is Saturday the Sabbath.

Working on my spiritual man is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself…It allow me to be me…love me for me…and allow me to love others for who (and what the heck) they are. While I read the bible for inspiration and as daily guide for healthy living…I am not going to impose my belief on any one, but to empower and encourage them.

For me, spirituality…is to strive for something greater within myself (God and I). Religion allows me to study my doctrine with others of like minds and surround myself with others…to encourage and be encouraged…

Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Religious folks…can only destroy.

Dan/W8…I agree with the two of you.

@ARed I know but that was just part of it. The documentary actually looked at attitudes toward sex both western and eastern. In eastern beliefs it was ritual..for example..there is a craving with a woman, a man and two other people who are kind of holding the woman upside down..nevermind too hard to describe..anywhoo in Japan (I think, it was consider unnatural for a man to “release” other procreation because it was thought the release would rob the man of his power.

William Shakespeare used “dying” as a metaphor for an orgasm. Life was ending and you were meeting your maker at that climax moment.

Learned that while reading him in high school…scared some of the other kids….why I don’t know, maybe the thought about it in the literal sense. I thought it was funny.

Oh my bad, didn’t know. I really don’t go to Union City that much anymore. However, I remember Ga. Highway 138 having a lot of dealers. I just remember my parents getting their car from a Hank Aaron dealership in Union City. That was a couple of years ago.

I guess that it was a matter of time, though. I find Shannon Mall useless unless you are looking for a cellphone. Is it still open? If people aren’t coming to the area what is the point for the car dealers. I thought that the car dealers were still open, though.

Car dealers have to have land to place the cars. ITP land is expensive.

Dagnabit that Bill Heard owed everybody when he folded.

If I remember correctly, he didn’t pay off people’s trades like they are supposed to do if you buy a car when you still owe on the last car. So,some people had to keep up both payments to keep their credit clean (if they could).

He just showed me. I do know that it takes a minute because the beer batter had to be refrigerated for a few hours after mixing.

The ingredients were all purpose flour, salt, pepper, beer, and of course onions. Mix the batter together and refrigerate for a few hours. After time passes, dip the onions in the batter and fry in veggie or canola oil.

I said that we started school later. I said nothing about practice starting later. We still started real practice the second week of August every year with two a day practices.

I say real practice because we still had conditioning all summer long before the season came. I spent many a June and July in “voluntary” conditioning drills like running the track or in the weight room. The head coach wasn’t there so it was a legal way around the no practice rule.

Shoot, I know of several high school football programs that go away for football camp. Some go to Jekyll Island for a week of numerous practices. Imagine the heat and humidity on Jekyll Island.

I’ve never had a football practice. I wouldn’t know how hard is too hard, or how much water or breaks a kid would need. Some coaches to go too far.

But I’ll be steering my kids towards indoor sports anyway. Mainly because they are probably going to be tall, but also because I’m going to have to sit out there and watch them, and I’d rather not brave the extreme elements either!!!

The wife is actually funny to me. She gets upset when the coach hits the players helmets (while they are wearing them). That doesn’t hurt unless someone slaps the earhole. That could rupture an eardrum.

Yeah, she is from upstate NY so they actually experience summer for about a week then fall begins in the second week of June.

The heat concern is understandable. Korey Stringer widow lives here in the ATL and it took him down (grown man). But, it has to be properly managed. We always have water breaks on a regular basis and there usually was a trainer around anyway.

yeah, he just finished the theater leg of his tour. The wife and I did make it down to Savannah for that Chrisette Michele/Maxwell concert. (She actually got another pair and we went down that day). It was nice. Chrisette was outstanding. Maxwell’s show was freakier than I expected but still good. Women were throwing roses and panties on the stage as it ended….lol

Erykah gives an excellent concert, too. I’ve seen her in concert many, many times. I’ll probably skip this round.

As for Maxwell, I am glad that I saw him at a small venue. He’ll have to change that show a little for a large venue. In the theater, it was more intimate. I think that his music lends itself to a smaller venue.

As good as the Philips Arena version of Prince’s concert was, I think that his concerts at the Tabernacle were better (during his Hit or Miss tour). When the slow stuff, like Adore, came on the small venue had the right vibe.

I agree for the most part with your post. My only problem is that Crabtree/Stafford/Moreno haven’t played a down in a NFL game. To make more than those who have proven themselves to have NFL ability is wrong. There should be some rookie cap or slot system like the NBA.

Then once you prove yourself worthy of tens of million (like Roddy White) then you have the right to complain about your compensation.

But, Crabtree is in the current system, and he should holdout for what he can get. As I said earlier, there is no guarantee that he will have leverage ever again.

My coworker just asked a question about the Hangover that I really didn’t quite remember the answer.

Did the movie explain how the chicken got into their room? It explained the baby, tiger, and other things, but I don’t remember an explanation about the chicken.

PG: I agree that the rookie salaries have gotten out of control but football players moreso than any other can have their careers ended in training camp. I think the NFL should have a rookie cap and I think vets whose career is cut short by an injury get the league minimal for for 3yrs. Now for something more important, do you agree with me on the Penny and hot azz iron thang?

They explained mattresses and everything else.

The managing partner joined our discussion and he said the same thing about the chicken….LOL. We are so loud that the office manager came down to inquire about the ruckus.

Laughing with the boss… Priceless….lol.

I will try to catch G.I. Joe this week. I have had some friends say that it was too cheesy and others love it. So, I will have to judge for myself.

@PG- I don’t know this is from the article:
http://www.latinoreview.com/news/interview-justin-bartha-on-the-hangover-as-hangover-week-continues-7016

What about the chicken?

Bartha: Exactly.

It’s not really explained in this movie.

Bartha: Exactly.

What’s your theory on the chicken and how it got into their room?

Bartha: Well, all I’ll say is George Bush. We’re talking about metaphors.

How about I can’t look at the Asian dude the same anymore but I am going to see that new movie he is in.

Penny: I can’t do that face thingy but I will take that as a yes. Let me get my checklist out:

1. One iron set on polyester (check)

2. One extension cord cause Penny kinds shawt (check)

3. One 92oz bottle of vanilla scent lotion (check)

4. One tube of aloe vera (check)

5. One 80’s Rock ballets Cd (check)
