Spotted on Twitter: “Blackberries, iPhones and Twitter killed the dating world. R.I.P.” This statement coming from The Fly Guy himself, made me think, “How do we even manage to hook up in person anymore?!” I know a lot of us are way into technology and social networking, but is it becoming harder for you to strike a balance with old school dating?

You know, calling a person up, asking them out, going to pick them up, and enjoying the company with quality face to face time. Yeah, that’s old school dating! Today, we send evites, tweets, Facebook messages to set things up with friends and dates.

The younger guy (I still need a name for him) I am seeing is all about the text. It got to the point where I had to tell him what I was comfortable with on text, and what actually required a phone call.

We have so many ways to showcase our personalities these days: Facebook, Twitter, personal blogs, text messaging, instant messaging, or email. Whew, that’s a lot of typing at each other. How can you determine if a person is actually interested in you when they are using “text”, which doesn’t exactly scream big effort?

Are you seeing someone who spends more of their time typing at you then seeing you in person? Do you think that is genuine interest or boredom?

Guys, you aren’t really big on phones and chatting, do you prefer the texting to communicate because it is a compromise for you?

I can recall a few times that my marido and I have been having dinner out and I could look around and maybe 1/3 of the patrons will be texting or on the phone. I look across the table and my husband will have this little gray square piece in his hand with about 25 buttons punching on it just like many others in the room. Except his is a calculator.

I’m aware that people are reluctant to accept the reality of the how, what and why of things like that. I serve only to inform of risk. Personally, my Internet footprint is so small that most of you could probably never find me, and I stay mindful of keeping it that way. Conversely, most folks tend to think that the bigger their Internet footprint, the better. That’s a foolish and needless assumption of risk, with negligible entertainment value in return. But hey… more power to you! Be young, hip, on the edge! But be informed.

Has anyone ever eaten at Strip in Atlantic Station? If so, what would you recommend?

I used to live in the neighborhood, so that was my spot. The B-52 is popular. I have never liked their drinks tho.

(I also look at those sites for any information to use against them in court.)

Because they hind em, they hind em, they hind em
Them Feds find em, they find em, they find em
Them Feds hind em, they hind em, they hind em
Them Feds find em, they find em, they find em

Talking bout a bail
God (D) what the hellz!
Then you stuck doin the pushups in a cell
Then I swear to God don’t let them Feds find ya
Talking on the radio man, they gonna ride ya
Lost in a tha system, ducked off caus they hind ya
They be like (D) where he at I can’t find him
So you better listen to the codes of the street
You tryin to jump in it not knowin that it’s deep
This concrete ocean ISH deeper than the sea
This ain’t a swiming pool always comin testing me..

EPO, if confidentiality is vital, encrypt, whether voice or data. It’s not the transport that needs to be secure, but rather the data itself. There are numerous encryption technologies that the government can’t crack.

That’s an extreme position to take, I don’t even encrypt to that extent. But I don’t communicate that much using digital means, either. I consider most, if not all of them, to be social ills, quite apart from the obvious risks of security, privacy and confidentiality.

That wraps around to the topic, I guess. If someone insisted on texting me, I’d just stop communicating with them altogether. I consider it rude. If you want to talk to me, come talk to me. Give me a call and we’ll set up a time to meet and talk. Actual communication, body language, facial expression, bad breath, everything! We might even enjoy each other’s company. That’s human interaction, not bowing before the Blackberry idol. If you’re too busy for that, then you’re over-extended, or you just don’t have the knack of such human interaction. Folks refer to that as “People Skills”, remember those? Maybe not, if you’re young enough. They’re worth having.

Fulfilling – The sushi at Strip is decent, but not great. I don’t want you to try it and not like it based on your Strip experience.

But the B-52 is a sushi dish. Like I said it’s popular. I always go with the Philly roll though.

@abc … and i mean that in terms of online and offline. i mean the east german stassi had stuff on lock waaaaay before the internet. between security cameras, IP addresses (which the AJC’s blog software captures), credit bureaus and other sorts of dossier-building companies, public birth, death, and property records, airline passenger records, and passports, i am so not worried about something i post on twitter.

I’ve done Strip. It was ok. I thought that it was overpriced, but most of the restaurants there are overpriced.

Other than the free saki, it wasn’t a great experience. Bad service until I had to explain to the manager that my wife being unhappy means that I will be unhappy. After that “discussion”, things were rad…(just for you Page).

Ella, VISA and MC have been selling information about what you buy since the 1970’s. To that extent, purchasing privacy’s horse has been out of the barn a long time. Retail stores save your credit card information on their networks for at least a short amount of time, and their Point-of-Sale mechanisms are often vulnerable to eavesdropping, especially with adoption of 802.11x wireless protocols in POS systems and in-store LANs. It’s a problem, for sure, but it’s nothing compared to what you give away to web sites.

For a long time I tried to avoid buying things on the web, but retail shops inventories shrink and shrink, and if you order over the phone, they’re just entering the transaction into the same web page you could do yourself, so that worm’s out of the can too. Profiling based on purchasing is long-standing and a permanent fixture, for sure.

That’s not a reason to give away every scrap of data about yourself, though, especially to enterprises known for their lack of awareness or caring, much less diligence, on these matters. The sole reason they’re in it is to get that data and re-market it. They don’t take many protective measures, either.

Capture of IP addresses is meaningless. That doesn’t give them a thing, necessarily. Do we discuss how networks work next?
