Spotted on Twitter: “Blackberries, iPhones and Twitter killed the dating world. R.I.P.” This statement coming from The Fly Guy himself, made me think, “How do we even manage to hook up in person anymore?!” I know a lot of us are way into technology and social networking, but is it becoming harder for you to strike a balance with old school dating?

You know, calling a person up, asking them out, going to pick them up, and enjoying the company with quality face to face time. Yeah, that’s old school dating! Today, we send evites, tweets, Facebook messages to set things up with friends and dates.

The younger guy (I still need a name for him) I am seeing is all about the text. It got to the point where I had to tell him what I was comfortable with on text, and what actually required a phone call.

We have so many ways to showcase our personalities these days: Facebook, Twitter, personal blogs, text messaging, instant messaging, or email. Whew, that’s a lot of typing at each other. How can you determine if a person is actually interested in you when they are using “text”, which doesn’t exactly scream big effort?

Are you seeing someone who spends more of their time typing at you then seeing you in person? Do you think that is genuine interest or boredom?

Guys, you aren’t really big on phones and chatting, do you prefer the texting to communicate because it is a compromise for you?

TGIF Blog Fam!

Me & SO are very busy throughout the day & I don’t believe in calling folks at work all the time like a teenager. So we sent small texts to each other once or twice, just to say hey! Texts are helpful too for quick messages or I’ve given addresses & directions to people & vice versa. Other than that, no long text conversations. Refuse to FB or Twitter too, just no need to have something ELSE to try to keep up with in my busy life! Plus I don’t like the loss of privacy. Employers do look at stuff like that now.

Too many folk hide behind texts, emails, blogs & other chat stuff when they should be out having real conversations and meeting with people & networking.

@Ared- How do I add Konklave info to my facebook?

W8 – It depends on your friends. I’m getting all the pics and updates from DC because 90% of my Kappa friends are there. I know who didn’t get in til 6:30 last night. I know Marvin Sapp is leading the Kappa Chior right now… there would be chaos in DC if the Kappas made folks check their phones at the door.

FB is good to catch up with old friends… But bad when old friends try and catch up with you.. That Friend suggestion thing kills me, its like nope, but I realized they are doing the same thing to me.. So I guess the feelings mutual. lol.. Texting sucks the life out of you, or the relationship.. Ex: woman/girl text me as Im walking to my truck, says hello whatcha up too? I look up and see her sitting in her car looking at me. I close my phone and keep walking as if I never received the msg.. Of course I got a phone call shortly after.. My two 14 yr nieces are pro’s at texting. Ex: text msg from one pass the ketchup. send. I look at her and knock the phone out of her hand, like stop playing… But maybe Im just being mean…

LOL Remote controls were the first culprits leading the road to a lazy America. Some nights the remote will be over on the couch so we’ll choose to just go to sleep instead.

When I joined, everyone started tagging me and I realized just how social I was.

Everything you put into social networking sites serves to profile you. The profiles used for marketing can easily become actuarial tables that indicate your credit worthiness, insurance risk, gauge how employable you are. That they tend to carry a risk of addictive behavior is by design. They seek data about you any way they can get it.

Similarly, Google Mail parses and profiles based on message body text, saving the messages and profiled results indefinitely, whether you think you’ve deleted those messages or not. Would you care to put all of your confidential business information in Google’s hands through the use of Google Apps? Twitter did. An account of theirs was hacked and sensitive business information published freely on the web a month or so ago. Real sharp, those Twitter guys.

Skype admits that they’re capable of tapping any conversation at any time, and that they have carried out such eavesdropping on governments and business entities. Any file you transfer using Skype will reside, in whole or in part, on computers all over the network, without your knowledge or ability to audit.

On and on and on. Hopefully, you’ve all heard stuff like this before, right? And you’re concerned about the impact of all this on dating?!

so you can see what your friends are doing on your own page…

W8 – No, unless the tag you.

The main page is your “news” feed so you can keep up with what everyone is doing in the feed. You mostly see status updates but pics and links will show up on there too.

The highlight part is the funniest. FB tells you what they THINK you want to see. I’ve seen some relationships change to “it’s complicated” and one girl enter into a relationship with another woman. It’s stuff that people put on their OWN pages that FB broadcasts to all their friends. Depending on how strong or weak your privacy settings are, anyting you do on your page has the potential to show up in your friends news feed.

Grace

I heard must businesses utilize FB when it comes to hiring.

I work in a law firm. The HR here does look at FB/Myspace/Twitter/Plaxo in reviewing applicants. i spent days looking at Facebook for them. (Which is why some days I spend more time on this blog than others).

I also look at those sites for any information to use against them in court. For example, in one case the plaintiff (we represented the defendants) claimed that he didn’t know one of our witnesses. However, the witness was a friend on his FB!! That made the plaintiff look like a liar in front of a jury and he lost his case.

All thanks to FB!!!

abc What you are saying is true… but the same hold true to any digital communication including cell phones, email, land line telephones, etc. All communication is digital these days, all communications are transmitted over the internet, all communications are tapped by local and federal agencies with or without court orders.
True, we make it easier for non-govt. organizations to gain info by posting it on FB/twitter/myspace, etc. But there is no gurantee of privacy in any electronic communication these days.
Aside from the profiling by employers the rest of what you say is going to happen whether we use media sites or not. Credit & Insurance Issuers already look at where you shop, what you buy, and other unknown factors when issuing credit. There was a case where an insurance company got frequent shopper files from grocery stores by subpoena for a slip and fall case, and they argued that the man bought wine/liquor frequently, therefore he was likely drunk and they should not have to pay a claim, I don’t recall if they won, but its still gone wayyyy too far already.

You can hide news feeds too.

Kym – Most definitely. That’s why I said it depends on your settings. The way my friends relationship status change like underwear, I’m thinking they don’t know this.

One guy went from “engaged” to “it’s complicated” to “single” in the course of a week. Relationships are hard enough without 150 people watching it happen. I hit him up privately and told him how to fix that.
