Spotted on Twitter: “Blackberries, iPhones and Twitter killed the dating world. R.I.P.” This statement coming from The Fly Guy himself, made me think, “How do we even manage to hook up in person anymore?!” I know a lot of us are way into technology and social networking, but is it becoming harder for you to strike a balance with old school dating?

You know, calling a person up, asking them out, going to pick them up, and enjoying the company with quality face to face time. Yeah, that’s old school dating! Today, we send evites, tweets, Facebook messages to set things up with friends and dates.

The younger guy (I still need a name for him) I am seeing is all about the text. It got to the point where I had to tell him what I was comfortable with on text, and what actually required a phone call.

We have so many ways to showcase our personalities these days: Facebook, Twitter, personal blogs, text messaging, instant messaging, or email. Whew, that’s a lot of typing at each other. How can you determine if a person is actually interested in you when they are using “text”, which doesn’t exactly scream big effort?

Are you seeing someone who spends more of their time typing at you then seeing you in person? Do you think that is genuine interest or boredom?

Guys, you aren’t really big on phones and chatting, do you prefer the texting to communicate because it is a compromise for you?

LOL @ Page using “OMG” and “SMDH” in her post about how she checked ole girl on the way posted her status msg. Hee hee…

The convo between W8 and Raqi reminds me that I actually do text a lot and thats because I don’t have a lot of minutes on my plan. VZW aint cheap!!! Besides, if you have a BB, they force you to get a data plan. If I didn’t have to pay $30 for that, I’d up my minutes and not txt so much. So, technically, it’s VZWs fault I text so much…

On topic:

Texting is cool and flirty like if u placing feelers on a lady or 4 quick updates etc.Not for serious convo.
Al this other facebook, twitter stuff and the constant updating?? Bullshizzle at its best.
I finaly made it on facebook and all i got are my close relatives and friends and a few friends of friends and some fam pics.I have even ignored suggestions to befriend some close relatives!!Dont want no drama on that public wall with some of these family chicken heads!
Kept it small, exclusive and drama free.
I am a prisoner only to my email, thats it.
Queen has a habit of coming home, hooking up her lap and going on facebook to scope her friends’ pics.Ive told her,one of these days she will find me gone coz that facebook(twitterr etc) can be addictive to some suckers.

LOL Peach404- I say OMG like totally all the time. I get that because it’s an abbreviation for oh my god, which i say in “real life” all the time, right W8? LOL. But, what I don’t get is someone using “lqqn” instead of “looking” and “dis” instead of “this” and “kno” instead of “know”. Stuff like that I don’t get because those are not abbreviattions, those are just them shortening the words. To me, what is the difference between typing “dis” instead of “this”….ummm it’s ONE letter shorter!….seriously! sheesh!

*brb…gotta go change my status and text some people*. lmao.

I am of the younger generation but aside from that, I just never been much of a telephone person. When cultivating the beginnings of a possible relationship I suck it up and talk until we get to a point where I’m comfortable enough to say that I’d rather text.

Just updated my FB status that I’m blogging about how much use FB and text

@Pag – you are killing me with your text talk in your posts!!!! Lol!!!

@AR – I didn’t see that episode. Last season I didn’t watch b/c I thought they were ghetto and only perpetuated the negative image of black women – especially in Atlanta. But, after last week (hell, this week too) and that episode with Sheree… I’m hooked!!!

I see a lot of folks on here are on FB… I wanna know what some of yall look like! Lol

Anyway, I guess I’ll do some work now. I have been here for 2 hours now and all I’ve done is goofed around on FB and blogged. BBL!

Then one day I got ragged for not being up on Facebook and Staceye just showed me how to use it…LOL once the new account came Isent out a message saying don’t send me anything personal because someone else has access to my account…then I just changed the password…so I am good now..I’ve been having some excellent football discussions on there..it’s pretty cool…and new…folks are tagging me in photos and they show up on your own page…that’s cool

Peach – Yes, you can’t expect anything from reality TV but madness. Glad to have you on board this season.

But yes, Lisa was in bed sick and Ed’s like “I’m gonna make her some chicken soup!” I was expecting a can of Campbells and he’s over here cutting up chicken and veggies and making stock and ish. Go Ed!

It actually destroys relationships so watch out! – rightly so Melo, I read an article of marriages failing because of facebook. I keep mine to a managable few select family memebers, I ended up having to delete a few friends b/c of their bad manners, and scrap starters, my kids have full range to my facebook and I don’t want them to see all that mess so I had to cut them loose.

Hello everyone
I’m not techno savy person however @ times I will send a text once in a while. I agree with some of the other blogger’s that it is better to have a convo by phone rather than texting, it’s so impersonal. I too like to hear the sigh or the voice tones especiall if i’m in a new
relationship. Face to face is so much better, looking into someone’s
eyes can tell you what they are really saying or not saying.

Raqi...give it to me right, Or don't give it to me at all

Yes Infamous it’s the music, the tone, the beat that moves you.

It’s like if my man was to send me a text saying “you always smell good” compared to him being present saying “you smell good” while his lips lightly touch my neck, with the warmth of his breath and the bass in his voice…

W8 – I like it too. I left home after HS and never looked back and it’s been really nice catching up with folks I haven’t seen in a while. And keeping up with friends who I’m just too far away from.

I resisted for a long time, but it’s been really cool. I’m going to be missing my school’s black alumni reunion and I was bummed about that but with Facebook I get to keep up with all those folks anyway.

There have been so many updates and pics about the Kappa Conclave that I feel like I am there.

As an early adopter, I’ve been into technology since 1982. Bought an early PC, studied CS, programmed through the mid-90’s, first for fun and later for profit; became a data center manager, network engineer, back to programming and then to tech director through dotcom years; now heavily involved in information security and privacy. Believe me, I get it.

Personal blogs scream ‘narcissism’. Facebook is a lonely hearts club where 15% of users suffer something the AMA calls FAD, or Facebook Addictive Disorder, similar to Gaming Addictive Disorder or a more generalized Internet Addictive Disorder. Twitter is aptly named, providing a new marketing channel more than anything else, with $650 mil pumped in through investment capital while nobody has yet figured out how to make any money on it — but that’s the goal of Twitter, of course, to make money, just like all the other so-called ’social networking’ entities.

They all represent threats to personal privacy, personal and business confidentiality, and network security. Only a naive newbie, someone relatively idiotic, or one caught up in the addictive malaise would see great merit in such enterprises. That seems to be about 70% of Americans, so far. All are tools of marketeers, who are plainly wrecking the Internet. It’s still usable as that for which it was originally intended, but relatively few actually use it for that. Most disturbing!

@Raqi oops … yeah that wasn’t clear was it? makes it sound like he’s my imaginary boyfriend.

to clarify: since we became a couple last fall, we have seen each every month or so (he lives in L.A.). sometimes it’s 2 or 3 weeks between visits. sometimes (like now) it’s 6. but before that, we only saw each other once a year.
