The results of the Great Male Survey 2009 from Askmen.com are in. I eagerly anticipate this each year (no sarcasm, really) because it’s like getting a small peek into a cross-section of men that are in my dating pool. From what I can tell, modern men are still big on tradition: “When it comes to the romantic front, everything old is new again” I feel that this is a great thing to hear, for the most part. That doesn’t mean I don’t struggle with some of the ideas that come with that though.
The Dating & Sex part of the survey had a lot of great questions. I would be interested to hear some of our male readers to respond to the first five: Do you believe that you have a soul mate? What is the most important personality trait that makes a woman “relationship material”? Is it important for a girlfriend to have “wife potential”? Do you believe in marriage? How important is it to you for your future wife to sign a prenup?
Ladies, the Great Female Survey was given by Yahoo’s female portal, Shine. Same questions for you: Do you believe that you have a soul mate? What is the most important personality trait that makes a man “relationship material”? Is it important for a boyfriend to have “husband potential”? Do you believe in marriage? Do you want your future husband to sign a prenup? Would you sign one?
Some of the numbers surprised me, what do you think about the responses?
Happy Friday everyone!

I remember completing this survey a couple of weeks ago. Some of my answers were not posted on the cue box but here goes:
Do you believe that you have a soul mate? Yeah . . . more than one.
What is the most important personality trait that makes a woman “relationship material”? First of all be a lady . . . simply put I ask myself the question would I be proud to introduce this woman to my mother?
Is it important for a girlfriend to have “wife potential”? Of course . . . why bother with a relationship otherwise.
Do you believe in marriage? Yes.
How important is it to you for your future wife to sign a prenup? I’m not a man of great wealth. I’m not a pauper either . . . in a nutshell I would not make my soulmate sign a prenup.

@ C – So interesting that you mention being a lady. I have a GF that is GROSS!!! She’s always burping – and she sounds like a man when she does it. It disgusts me so I know if she does it around a man he has GOT to be totally turned off. I asked her if she does that (burp) in front of dudes and she said “If he got a problem with gas, he can’t be with me!”(ewwww!). She smacks when she eats, talks with her mouth full, and is very messy. She also curses worse than a sailor. I think being a lady (but not a priss) is important.
Do you believe in a soul mate YES!!!! But, I think mine was killed in a car accident as a child so I’m SOL…
Personality trait for relationship material Consideration.
Husband potential? Absolutely! I don’t date for “sport” anymore – nor do I date to find a husband. But, I am looking for a long-term committed relationship that will hopefully be my last, so…
Marriage? It’s not my end-goal but, if he wanted it, I would do it to make him happy. I’d be satisfied with the Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell deal as long as we were totally committed to each other.
Prenup? Ehhh…I wouldn’t require it and I wouldn’t have a problem with signing one either.

Morning blog people!
Enjoying a day at home today. Happy Friday!
I believe in the soulmate concept and I believe you can have more than one. My boyfriend must be husband material or I’m wasting my time because I date to marry at this stage in the game. I had fun in high school & college. So needless to say I definitely believe in marriage. What makes a man relationship material is character. If he is of good character, other things will be present like integrity, honesty, true to his word, responsibleness(if that’s a word). He does what he says he is going to do.
I really don’t want to go down the prenup road. Me nor my SO “got it like that”. We’re comfortable and each has different responsibilities. He has kids he has to look out for. We both have homes. I expect should we marry we would have things in place like wills, insurance policies, etc. A prenup would be just overkill and leave an unneccesary bad taste.

Do you believe that you have a soul mate? Yes…I believe in soul mate(s) you can connect with more than one person (ohh that was too long).
What is the most important personality trait that makes a man “relationship material”? Honesty…you have to keep your word

Hey Kimmie! Thanks for the recipe yesterday was crazy, but I did get it…
Peach- I will never forget I was at the Ob/gyn and he asked me at what age did I become active and how many partners I have had…I answered him truthfully and he told me I had very low miles and to keep the morals (we have a good relationship), but I was not expecting that….
@C you are right about being a lady. I grew up with all male cousins and I was a tomboy/prissy little thing. I really credit both of my parents for giving me etiquette and preparing me on how to conduct myself. I have seen so many women that are not ladies and men that are not gentlemen…it is a shame.

Being a lady is second nature to me because I was raised by one and brought up around many(grandmother, aunts, family friends, etc.). Same with my brothers and being gentleman. So the concept of a person not being one is foreign to me. When I see it going on, that person sticks out like a sore thumb.
Good manners cost nothing. They trancend all economic levels. Some of the least fortunate people I’ve known had the best manners and “home training”. Some of the weathiest were the most boorish. If that type of thing was not stressed in your household, read up on it and put it into practice. 2 boyfriends I’ve had did this. It worked wonders for their careers and personal relationships. I’ve certainly reaped the benefits of them myself. Conduct yourself and treat others with the greatest respect. It will just make you and everyone around you feel good! Good manners will take you far.

Prenup? Not signing one & would not consider marrying anyone who suggested I had to.. When I get married, it is until death do us part PERIOD!! Also, I am ONLY doing it ONCE!
All that men tend to like women who have had LESS than 5 partners in their life is CRAZY! They will get a woman that has JUST as many partners as they’ve had

Professor – Cool.
In the past, if I was just “kickin it” with a guy, he was not considered a “boyfriend”. Most guys I know would not give “girlfriend” title to a jumpoff. Friends with benefits, jumpoffs, kickin it – those are not real “relationships” to me, so it seems to reason you would not care if they had spouse or soul mate potential.

Do you believe that you have a soul mate? – I believe that soul mates can be male or female. So, yes. And in fact, I believe that I have more than one. Have I ever had a partner that was a soul mate? Not really.
What is the most important personality trait that makes a man “relationship material”? Patience.
Is it important for a boyfriend to have “husband potential”? At this stage in my life, YEP and YEP again.
Do you believe in marriage? YEP and YEP again.
Do you want your future husband to sign a prenup? Only if he’s promising me mad passionate sex daily in it.
Would you sign one? If he asked me to…I just might change my mind and let him in my heart forever….I just might give my heart and stay here in his arms forever…….so, um, yeah…If he asked me to.

One other trait that I believe is important in my partner is the ability to call me on bvllsht and correct me as needed.

Do you believe that you have a soul mate? Honestly right now I don’t know…I just feel far removed from that line of thinking.
What is the most important personality trait that makes a man “relationship material”? Honesty means alot to me b/c lies breed mistrust and without that there is no relationship.
Is it important for a boyfriend to have “husband potential”? I don’t know about that b/c I’m not looking for a husband but if I were dating I’d like to date a man that I would proudly take home to meet my mom and to date that’s only happened ONCE.
Do you believe in marriage? The jury is deadlocked on THAT one.
Do you want your future husband to sign a prenup? Would you sign one? Truthfully I don’t think I’ll ever get married BUUT unless I hit the lotto or something I wouldn’t make my future husband sign a prenup and if I was asked to sign one then guess who I’ll be looking out for……ME, of course.

Soul mates: In a sense, yes, but I don’t believe in The One. I think there are multiple people who could potentially be “the one” and whether it comes to pass is all about the willingness of both sides to commit.

Necessity of “wife potential:” For anything more than a recreational phluck, yes, there must be some potential there. Otherwise, what’s the point?

And think the greatest divide is on the side of the women. The terms of marriage is what I am hearing a lot of women these days find undesirable.

I don’t think the Cambridge case was racial profiling. The cop in question has taught race relations at the Cambridge Police Academy for 5 years, having been appointed to the task by an AA police commisioner. Gates was unruly. Here’s the deal: get unruly with a cop, no matter the circumstances, and they’ll taze your azz, then take you to jail. Your race doesn’t matter, the cop’s race doesn’t matter. They’re a cop and you’re not, that’s what matters. Gates is lucky he didn’t get hurt.
Now, I have no use for cops, and if anything, I have a very strong bias against them; but this incident had nothing to do with racial profiling. The President was way out of line in his commentary on the case.

Peach I know a lot of married men that are happy being so. I know of a several men that are wanting and looking to get married.
The thing is for men nothing has really changed over the years in the role that men play in the marriage. Since the beginning men have been providing and protecting in the union. The change is on the “wifey” side because many women don’t “need” or want that from a man these days. IMO men just see it as being a man, but many women view it as being belittled or giving up some sort of right.

Morning Folks!!! I haven’t read the responses, I wanted to get mine in first:
Do you believe that you have a soul mate? I believe I have soul mates. Male and female, there are people that my soul simply connects with on a spiritual level that extends beyond the regular. In the context of a romantic relationship, yes.
What is the most important personality trait that makes a man “relationship material”? Difficult to name one – really it is, but I’ll have to go with he must be considerate of others. I thought to say ‘unselfish’ but we’re all selfish to a degree – so I need him to be able to forgo self and be considerate of my needs/desires.
Is it important for a boyfriend to have “husband potential”? Yup.
Do you believe in marriage? Yup.
Do you want your future husband to sign a prenup? Would you sign one? Nope but I would have no problem signing one. Mainly because he has children and I wouldn’t blame him if he wanted to make sure they were protected. Although I think that could be accomplished with a solid will – if that were the case then nope.
I’ll have to read the responses in the article later.

I am a major fan of Skip Gates, but I think that I must concur with a comment by Roland Martin that this may have been an issue of tempers flaring. I am still weighing the factual information before I make a decision. Something is missing in the recount of the story. Did the officer’s tone and demeanor convey in inappropriate inquiry to Gates? Did Gates react predisposed to the pre-existing issues regarding the allegations of profiling by the Cambridge PD?

The charge was for being unruly with a police officer, details of which are a little vague. The actual charge is ‘Disorderly Conduct’. Investigation of a possible break-in became a domestic disturbance, brought on by the resident himself, in giving the cop a bunch of crap.
This cop followed procedure to the letter. Given one of the courses he teaches to recruits is entitled ‘Racial Profiling’, he is literally the definition of how to avoid racial profiling in the police department that protects the town where Harvard is located. You can expect that they’re not ill-informed on the topic.

I don’t believe there is only one person that “completes” me. I belive there will be men I have more chemistry with, but ultimately, there is more than one guy I could have a lasting marriage with.
What is the most important personality trait that makes a man “relationship material”?
A strong sense of commitment. You never have to stay in a relationship.
Is it important for a boyfriend to have “husband potential”?
Of course.
Do you believe in marriage?
Depends on the day. I do ultimately believe in it, but I don’t believe many people have the mettle to make it last long term.
Do you want your future husband to sign a prenup? Would you sign one?
I’m not into prenups, but I’d sign if he asked me to and as long as I could add my own rules to it.

Now, having said that, it’s a daily occurance that a case of police brutality hits the news. People die from excessive use of police force every day. I don’t trust a cop’s judgement, period, and the way I deal with them is to avoid them at all costs, whether they’re on or off duty, whether they’re in church, socially, anywhere. I don’t like cops. But this case isn’t racial profiling.
Police brutality being so common is what leads me to say that Gates is lucky he didn’t get hurt. Cops of all races beat up and kill people of all races unnecessarily, for relatively non-violent and trivial crimes, in many cases. Our culture celebrates it, as evidenced on TV and in film.

Frankly, I’d expect an AA cop in Atlanta to do exactly the same thing as that white cop in Cambridge, only the risk of injury to the suspect would be far, far greater. The most cop attitude I’ve ever personally witnessed was from AA cops in New Orleans. Don’t mess with cops, period, just do whatever it takes to appease them and (hopefully) get them to leave. That’s just my opinion though, like I said, I have absolutely no use for cops.

maybe so,but u tell me a crook is not a good candidate to teach others how to be a good crook??
Dont believe the police report either, what do u expect?? for it to incriminate the police officer??
If u heard correctly,Profdessor was arrested when he followed the oficcer, asking him for his ID and name.Thats how the Disorederly Conduct came about. To me that suggests, the officer was done veryfing that the dude lived there.
He was pissed that the guy stood up to him to ask him for that detail.Officers dont like that, esp from a black man.
U still dont believe that??
Why was the charge dropped if it were legitimate??
I did smethign like that way back.A cop stops me on I-85,my car was brand new, i was on speed limit, nothing amiss.
He steps to me,ask for id etc,and evething checks. Why u stop me, i ask?? Oh,ur lights were bright.I say,my lights arent bright now, what u mean, what changed them to deem then,i aint tched them.

As for the Gate’s situation, I believe both parties were power happy. The cop had the badge and cuffs though, so he wins.
I’m sure once the cop got hold of Gates ID, it could have ended there, but since Gates was still going, so the cop did too. Neither person was the bigger person.
It would be different if something suspicious had not being going down at the home. Two men trying to force open a door is suspicious. He wasn’t being targeted, the police were rightfully called. He didn’t roll up on Gates out the blue.

RE: Cambridge case — Without actually witnessing the incident, I wouldn’t say for certain, but based on what I’ve read, I’m inclined to agree with abc on this one. It is best that you stay out of politics. It wasn’t racial profiling. I think that it turned into a battle of testosterone. The cops requesting proof and Prof. Gates feeling offended having to show proof. Both sides had issues with the other’s person’s tone and it got out of hand.
As for Pres. Obama, he wasn’t there. So, he doesn’t know what went on. His opinions are just that his opinions, but being that he couldn’t look at it objectively, he should have passed on answering the question.
I mean he has acted so cautiously in speaking on other in other matters. Remember he told that reporter that he “likes to know what he’s talking about before he speaks”. This case seems like he didn’t do that.

Look, we know that racial profiling exist…and we know that racism, racial ignorance and insensitivity, racialism ain’t going no where…some form of it has been a part of civilization for nigh 800 years (read Racism: A Short History by George M. Frederickson)…human nature is inclined to form biased opinions of “the other” by perception…we, as a ppl, need to look more closely into ourselves and situations in order to determine the content of racial association with an issue…we also need to learn to be more objective and rationale about racial situations.
Hey-ale…I am a bigot…I have biases about ppl based on varying criteria of identity…so be it…and there are times when I am prone to use these criteria as well…but I learn to control how I articulate my bias/bigoted opinions of others…I how that to my God consciousness to first attempt a more humane expression of perceived or real differences…and I also attempt to discern how my race, class or gender have come into play with an issue before I label it a discriminatory act…did it happen because of these factors or did it happen by way of human idiosyncrasies colliding?.

Cops are going to be aggressive with anyone that gives them crap, regardless of race. That’s what I’m saying: ALL cops are this way, intentionally and by design, to ALL people. We’re supposed to think the cops are our friends, they’re around to help us? Come on. To a cop, everyone is a suspect and a perp, just like to a doctor everyone is a patient, to a politician everyone is a voter.
I’ll admit my bias, though. I just don’t like cops. It takes a certain personality to be a cop, and it’s not something that I find appealing in the slightest.

I agree I think this is a case of his story/his story and the truth and it was a case of tempers getting out of line. A neighbor snapped a pic of the “incident by the way. And for the record that one officer did not response to the house alone. There were other officers there. I believe this was a power struggle. Mr. Gates went high and to the left and so did the officer. This is not a race thing this a my balls are bigger than yours thing.

Leggs – It doesn’t matter if the neighbor knew what he looked like or not. The activity was suspicous, why would he have to be breaking in to his own home? And because the driver was helping, the neighbor could have thought Gates was being taken hostage or held at gun point or something.
And had he been an actual robber, Gates would have been grateful that the police were called.

But seriously who wouldnt have been pissed about a cop tripping on you at your house. Everybody knows how Police act and especially when you dont care that they are Police officers. I talk them exactly how they talk to me, so if they are talking to me in their crazy police tone I talk to them back that way and give them my Lawyers card. Usually they know who he is and know that he’s no joke. Heck I take him with me to traffic court so I dont have to wait in line to get stuff straightened out. See I’ll admit it I’m from the NWA “F the Police” mindset because I have seen them do way more wrong than good and people have to understand a Black Male doesnt get the same courteous, mannerable and respectful approach as anyone else. I myself have asked to get out of my car and on my knees with my hands behind my head. Only to be let go afterwards and the reason was “They felt like stopping me”.

On the Gates thing – I was hoping the POTUS would have said I don’t have all the facts so I can’t respond at this time and then make his comment about the fact that racial profiling exists.
What I don’t understand is, how can I be disorderly in my own home. If you’re in my home you’re subject to whatever I say – as long as I don’t put my hands on you…
The only way I agree that race has a place in this is that I don’t think an elderly white man would have been treated the same way and I do believe an elderly white man would have had choice words for the officer.

Unfortunately, calling a spade a spade may come a steep price for him. Passing this healthcare thing was gonna be tough anyway. But now, he has made it harder. He is now getting some labels as racist president. It won’tbe passed before the summer recess in August. So the Congressmen will get to go home and hear from their constituents. This incident that they will have in their minds.
Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and be smarter than those trying to get you to slip up.

And they neighbor said two men were breaking in. Describe them. Short black male close cropped hair. Tall black male close cropped hair whateva. I mean if there had turn out to be a robber..who are the police going to look for? Two men? Hell I can find two men right now on the street together this is Atlanta..you have to provide details. Race, height, color of clothing something so they know who they are looking for.
@abc and you are right cops are aggressive there are fewer of them because public safety is getting hit with major cutbacks. Sorry but I feel for the men and women in blue because they have to put up with some serious crap every day and then go home at night and forget it only to come back and pick it up again tomorrow. Hey, I’m glad there are cops. If nothing else, it means I don’t have to be one. I understand why they have procedures that insist on immediate compliance, or else. I even understand how they’d consider everyone around them to be suspects of something or other, and why particular personalities are better suited for the work. Talk about profiling, there’s some serious profiling right there, I admit it.
Given that I understand all that, when I’m faced with cops, I comply with them immediately, keep my words and actions to a minimum, facilitate whatever it is they’re after and wish them well as they depart — hopefully, they simply depart after the encounter, leaving me at home, in my car, whatever. Gates didn’t do that. He got arrested for giving crap to the cop, not for being black. Young, old, black, white, male, female — anyone would have gotten exactly the same treatment, maybe worse.

I have had cops apologize to me before. (I’m sorry sir for taking some of your time.) A lot of it has to do with how you interact with them. In many of situations, they are just scared. Most have wives and children waiting for them at home.
Sure there are bad cops, but there are bad accountants, bad grocery clerks, bad teachers, bad garbagemen, bad water treatment, and there are just some bad people in this world period.
I’ve had to deal with many cops in my lifetime. We were one of the first black families in our area and dealt with gunshots in the house, crosses in the yard, murdered pets, blown up mailboxes. So, I’ve met cops that were professional about the situation and cops that weren’t.

True story:
My father is a retired Deputy Chief of Police. Many years ago when I was about 10 or so…I got locked out of the house…so me being the brilliant solutionist that I am…lol…decided to remove the outside screen window and push open the inside window to get into the house…well, a neighbor (in an predominately black neighborhood) saw the tale end of me going through the window and call the police…now it really gets funny…my pops was on patrol and when he heard the address he knew that it was HIS house…so he bee lined it home…came in with his hand on his gun…saw the window (as I had not put it back on yet)…other cops showed up…went looking through the house and found me watching TV…lol…well, needless to say the windows were changed immediately for a more security against easy removal and access…yeah, I broke into my own house, my father answered the call about a break in at his house…did my neighbor not KNOW that it was me???

On gentlemanly duties…Ladies it’s all or nothing you cant pick and choose what you want him to do..if he is a gentleman you take the good with the bad.
On this Law Enforcement Convo..I will say this and be done…It’s amazing how people bad mouth the police but never say thank you..I wish we were allowed to have the same piss poor attitude towards others that they have towards us right off the bat from one experience or whatever(I am sure you have had bad experiences with the opposite sex..but you keep going back).but nope…We put our life on the line because we are supposed to…do we have bad days yes are we human ..Yes..I am a Federal Law Enforcement officer so I don’t play by state or local laws…I commend those on that level because they have far to many regulations. Attitude and being mouthy are not criminal offenses. Should cops have to endure a tounge lashing because they are stopping someone that broke the law? one thing I never realized before I became an officer is that you can go to jail or get a citation for anything (Except 2 things and I’ll leave that up to you to figure out). So Peace Officers exercise a lot of restraint and give many brakes more then you realize. Well Mr. Citizen, I guess you have me figured out. I seem to fit neatly into the category you place me in. I’m stereotyped, characterized, standardized, classified, grouped, and always typical. I’m the “lousy cop.” Unfortunately, the reverse isn’t true. I can never figure you out.
From birth you teach your children that I am the bogeyman, and then you’re shocked when they identify me with my traditional enemy, the criminal. You accuse me of coddling juveniles, until I catch your kid doing something. You may take an hour for lunch, and have several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as a loafer if you see me having just one cup.
You pride yourself on your polished manners, but think nothing of interrupting my meals at noon with your troubles. You raise hell about the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I’m picking on you. You know all the traffic laws, but never got a single ticket you deserved. You shout “foul” if you observe me driving fast enroute to an emergency call, but literally raise hell if I take more than ten seconds responding to your call!!!
You call it “part of the job” if someone strikes me, but it’s “police brutality” if I strike back. You wouldn’t think of telling your dentist how to pull a badly decayed tooth, or your doctor how to take out your appendix, but you are always willing to give me a few pointers on law enforcement. You talk to me in a manner and use language that would assure a bloody nose from anyone else, but you expect me to stand and take it without batting an eye.
You cry, “Something has to be done about all the crime!” but you can’t be bothered with getting involved.
You’ve got no use for me at all, but, of course, it’s OK if I change a tire for your wife, or deliver your baby in the back seat of my patrol car on the way to the hospital, or save your son’s life with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, or work many hours over-time to find your lost daughter.
So Mr. Citizen, you stand there on your soapbox and rant and rave about the way I do my job, calling me every name in the book, but never stop a minute to think that your property, your family, or maybe your life might depend on one thing, ME, or one if my buddies.
I don’t want to get into the argument about why cops do certain things, if you’re not a cop you’ll never understand. That’s ok. I don’t know your job and I might not understand why you do the things you do.

After reading more about this officer in the Gates case and the other details it seems more like a case of the cop being annoyed by a guy who is challenging his authority.
But I must say that I have been arrested for nonsense while in my own home. Someone had a medical emergency in my home and the police came in with the paramedics… I went to the hospital with the ambulance and some friends, next thing you know I was arrested in the hospital because the police were still in my house checking serial numbers on items in my house and one item came up stolen. Well actually I still had the sales reciept in my pocket at the hospital and they called the store and they described me as the person who purchased the item, and they figured out that they had transposed digits in the serial number while they were snooping around my house.
I have other stories of being held at gunpoint by the police for absolutely no valid reason… but I’ll save those for other ocassions…and I don’t even have dreadlocks or wear baggy pants…

Cobb County has a bad rep for that type of behavior. Heck even the WWE knows enough about it to have had a wrestler by the name of Big Boss Man from Cobb County GA.
I had one of those experiences as well on South Cobb Drive. I was driving a Corvette. Luckily, I was near my friends house, who is a Cobb County judge. He walked down to see what the commotion was about.
Villa Rica was by far the worst though. The US Department of Justice came and dealt with their police department.

Cee – I agree with a lot of the points made about the Gates case, mostly with Melo & you though. I guess looking at what I have gathered in the news, I have a few questions. Why did they feel the need to arrest & cuff an elderly man on a cane? Is he really a threat to society? He had showed them his id – why didn’t they just turn around and leave? If he followed them out wanting cops badge # & id – what’s the harm? I do think it was a case of flaired tempers – Gates probably had a chip on his shoulder anyway & cop didn’t like being questioned & talked back to. All blown out of proportion.
And yeah, I really don’t think it should have been brought up at the prez’s health care presser, but they do that all the time, especially to this prez. Press loves to stir the pot & make more controversy than stick to the issue at hand. They knew the prez was friends with Gates. And I don’t really think his statements is going to have THAT much effect on the healthcare thing. They were not going to be ready before the recess anyway and he said he didn’t mind the delay as long as they were working on it. The GOP & the conserv. dems were going to bytch about the plan anyway. As for him being on tv all the time – well folks asked for transparency didn’t they? When ABC, CNN, GMA have been asked about it they say they are reporting the news and barring a sit-down interview if the prez is on a foreign trip, doing a speech or a townhall or signing a bill in the Rose Garden, they are gonna show it. If folks don’t want to see him, don’t watch the news. Fox’s sole mission dedicated to dissecting and bashing him any way they see fit.

Infamous what did you do to get stopped? Are you saying it was just random.
I was watching Good Morning America this morning they were talking this guy Williams asking him his take on. I agree with him although we really don’t hear of it happening quite often, but he said that the cops are trained to check out the premises just in case some one is in the house and making get rid of the police. Yeah it seems far fetched because it we really don’t hear of that but it is possible. If it wasn’t the police would not be trained to expect.
I still say hate me for doing my job rather than not doing it and things turning out much worse. The thing is a police can’t or rather should never assume a situation is not the worst.
Just think had somebody been the house and that man was killed or robbed because the police did not do their job. We would still be here talking about racial issues except it would the cops not caring to fully do their duty because it was a black man’s house.
Tazzee I disagree. If I call you to my house as an authority to perform a service of investigation and protection I need to allow you to do just that. Yes I am unruly when I fight you in doing the job I called you to do in my house.

My mom was a cop for 20 years, albeit military police. But you could never know from the outside looking in what it looks like from the inside looking out. I have MAD respect for law enforcement and what they do to put their lives on the line on a DAILY basis.
Are there bad cops? Yes. Do good cops have bad days? Yes.
When you make a bad judgement call or mistake on your job (depending on that job), you sell a few less widgets, you have to stay late to re-work the numbers, you have to drop more fries for the lunch crowd.
When a police officer does the same thing, someone one may end up in jail, he may receive harsh scrutiny or…he may not come home that night…or ever….
So…they deserve a measure of respect regardless…
And I could go on.

As for him being on tv all the time – well folks asked for transparency didn’t they?
That isn’t transparency. They aren’tshowing him and his conversations with his Chief of Staff or his dealmaking with Congress. They aren’t really showing the public how the process works at all. They are showing First Lady Michelle Obama walking the dog. The staff and stuff like that. They aren’t showing the things that affect our lives.
For the record, I don’t think that they should show all of the dealings that go down in making laws. It isn’t pretty and things get cut and deals get made that will always make some group of people upset. You can’t get anything done if you try to keep everyone happy. It is impossible to keep everyone happy.

W8 – Thanks for a COP perspective.
DK – So sorry that happened to you, and I’ve heard too many stories like that.
As for this Cambridge/Harvard incident, I am so not surprised and Gates might have already been worked up just at the sight of the cops up there. I’ve had a few friends attend Harvard and a few that live in the Boston area. Let’s just say racism in the South has NOTHING on that area. In fact, my Harvard friends were quite shocked with what they had to deal with.
I’ve had 2 bad incidents with Cobb cops. Nothing like DK, but each time they came out the gate nasty to me. I bent over backward to be respectful, but they just came at me like smartazzes instead of just taking care of the issue at hand.
And yes, the cops I have dealt with in small towns south of the A have been some of the NICEST! Not what you would expect at all. I was in a minor fender-bender while riding back from my grandmothers with my aunt around Thanksgiving. My aunt kept remarking how kind the officers were.

abc I have seen with my own eyes when white folks have said things to the police and nothing happened, when I can get a nasty attitude for politely answering their questions.
W8 I have worked for with State and Federal Police as an administrative employee and now as a contractor to several Federal Law Enforcement agencies… and I can tell you( as you well know) that even in the office they are some of the biggest A-holes ever. Not all cops, but I can count the cops that I am cool with on my 2 hands.
Now out on the street I have never had a completely positive interaction with the police. I have called them when my house was broken into, and they would not take the report because they could not find any evidence of who broke in. I called the police after I was the victim of a hit and run and they did not want to take the report because they said the likelyhood that they would catch the person was almost zero(I forced them to take the report, and the person was caught within an hour, due to the detailed description of the vehicle I gave). Someone else called the police to report that my car had been broken into and these dummies(in Cobb County) investigate me for drug and gang activities because they said it looked like more than a typical car break in situation. I have been harassed by police who just want to stop me to see what I am wearing apparently ( like Mike Epps said… LoL).
Sad to say, but I could go on… But in short I have not had a call to the police where they wanted to help me when I was in need and I have had plenty of situations where I was harassed for no good reason. Note: I am a clean cut, educated guy who dressed nicely at all times. So really I can’t come up with a lot of good to say about the cops I have interacted with aside from casual conversation in passing, or the few cops I know who are cool. I don’t hate cops, they are necessary, but at the same time I don’t give them any undue respect just for wearing a badge, as a result of erroding the respect I once had for them. I am not alone, disrespect for the police is not necessarily taught, it grows as a result of repeated poor treatment by the police in a given neighborhood.
I appreciate the good they do, but for some reason they have mostly fallen short when I have dealt with them.

From a lot of folks that vent about him being on tv a lot, the underlying, and sometimes not so underlying, thought is that if he’s on tv then he’s not working. If he takes a vacation he’s not working. Like that Gorilla Glue comment Zell Miller made – glue him to his seat at the Oval Office! Although I’ve never really given it much thought until now, but it sounds like a reference to the fact that Although Florida is in the south a/k/a “redneck country” , Florida was not an English colony. Florida was a Spanish term. Hence the Riviera, a latin term that is associated with coastal areas.

I agree with alot of the comments made on the incident of Gates/Cam Police. IMO it’s more about bruised ego than race. Most of all I want to thank the neighbor for looking out, she/he could have turned a blind eye but instead did the right thing by notifying the police. Gates on the other hand took things out of the context esp by uttering something in reference about the police’s mother, that was not called for. As for the President he should have gotten all the facts and not let his emotions toward his friend lead him to give a premature statement. Last I read the police is considering a defamation lawsuit.

W8 – I get it, you really can’t choose your battles and that’s a poor choice of words on my part. I do think some could assess situations better so as not to overreact, but I am not a cop and have not walked in your shoes and come up against what you have to deal with. My dad could have told you all kinds of stories about what he went up against and had to deal with working in Grady’s emergency room.
This is probably not the most supportive forum for a cop, but speaking for myself I do appreciate what you’ve said on here today. I respect all aspect of law & law enforcement, just not some of the individuals in it and their actions. I appreciate being able to call the law for help. We could not have a peaceful society without it.

It seems the news makes it local before CNN or another national source publishes it.
Twitter isn’t always verified news.
CNN has to verify news or face possible lawsuits. Which leads to some sort of accountability.
Twitter, as it stands, has no accountability. Twitter considers itself a rumormill. It looks like twitter might start charging to verify news. They don’t always verify accounts, and it looks like they will start doing that for a charge.

Took a dude into custody at an abortion clinic this morning…now I work HRT/SWAT/Fugitive Recovery….we’ve been looking for the dude for a long time…well we find out that his girlfriend is having an abortion early this morning around 4am…now I just got in around 2am I think because after about 7 Hennessy’s and multiple Corona and Heiniken chasers i am a little twisted…phone rings @430am…”mount up we have to go uc in an abortion clinc..etc etc etc” we get in place and we are helping run the show at the clinic..man that is the saddest place I have ever been in..just knowing what is going on in there…I saw a 12 year old girl come in and leave with her mother..The 12 year old had an abortion…I dont know the backstory on that due to HIPPA regulations…but there were other clients there too.. Anyway our perp walks in he’s in a suit 40 plus guy…he walks up to the window she fills out her paperwork he fills out his section since he is her “escort” or whatever the clinic calls the person who goes there with you…Then BAM we take him down HARD…She starts crying people are giving us a hardtime once they realize what’s going on.. we are hearing the “Let him be with his woman..this is a trying time crap..etc..etc” What they dont know is that this clean cut guy who is trying to be there for his woman is a cold blooded killer and a fugitive from justice. Anyway….those clinics are by far one of the most depressing places in the world…..sad sad sad stuff…I don;t know if my hangover amplified that fact but geeshh I am glad to kiss my kids today and glad that was not an option for them…

AmRed – I’m apt to believe that a local news source verifies their information before reporting it too. Not talking about TMZ but an actual news outlet.
Some people don’t believe it’s true until CNN publishes it – I’m not one of those people. And unless the E. Lynn story proves to be false, I haven’t had an instance where CNN didn’t follow up with the same information.
Unfortunately, I don’t think E. Lynn Harris will be high on the national news source radar.

I agree with your 12:06. I agree them even though I have had problems with cops in certain jurisdictions.
Lawyers say similar things in that we are villified and called everything but a child of God until someone needs us too.
Law students and med students often talk crap to each other. One thing that we tell the med students: ” When lawyers were crafting the United States Constitution, doctors were saying ‘take two leeches and call me in the morning’”
That always seems to get a good chuckle going between us law nerds and those med nerds.

AmRed – I’m apt to believe that a local news source verifies their information before reporting it too. Not talking about TMZ but an actual news outlet.
Tazzee – My point is that CNN is behind the curve becuse they take more steps to verify their info more than local (or gossip) news sites.
They aren’t always the last to know. I would venture that they would get tips just as early as local news do too. You’d gain a lot of credibility having your tip reported on CNN. But because folks want to be the “first” they’ll give it to anyone who will be willing to broadcast it.

Decides to have an abortion and calls me to go with her. I go, and I agree its a sad place. After she filed out the paperwork & I verified that I was her escort, I had to get out of there for awhile. That was back when Macy’s was downtown. I shopped & walked around (they told us it would be a few hours before it was all over). Abortion protesters with pictures of dead babies were at the clinic.
She and I lost touch after I broke up with my bf. But she had 2 more abortions after that one – just using it for birth control. It sickened me.

On another note, my criminal procedure class, which focused on the 4th, 5th, and 6th amendments of the US Constitution, spent a great amount of time on police and what they can and can’t do. That gave me more of a respect for what cops go through when I read some of the cases.

But it’s also funny to me that the further north one travels in this state (I’d say from Ocala on up)the more country it feels and looks.
Lol Shoot, I have folks from those parts too, from Waldo to Wimauma (pronounced Wild or Wile Mama)…to Ocala to parts of Bama and Jawgia…to…awww heyal, all over. But I’d still venture to say there is a bit of a difference in there.

It is just very diverse. I think that’s what I was getting at PoppaG. It’s overall makeup is not just “the dirty”…it’s too diverse for that with the mixture of folks from the islands and hispanic decent to include native american tribes/reserves…then top it off with our “folks”. I just see it as a big ‘ol pot of gumbo…everybody coming fresh off the boat just to contribute their own special ingredients into the mix. Being country, southern or whatever people want to call it, is just one aspect of its “upbringing”.
LOL @ the alligators. I’m right next to the Hillsbo River. We’re always spotting snakes in palmetto bushes. Heck, when I worked for this one company out near I-75 and Fletcher Ave….”we” had a huge alligator that lived on the premises. We called him Al. No one called animal control, since most didn’t see him as a threat, but he was huge. And he’d just sit out in front of the company lawn basking in the sun, mouth wide open, without much movement at all. And for some visitors, they actually thought that “he” was a statue, until someone informed them. But he pretty much minded his own business. It was obvious that we were more afraid of him than he was of us. LOL Shoot, folks in places like NewPortRichey have to worry about alligators walking right into their houses. It happens all the time, since a lot of them leave there doors cracked or opened. One elderly women found one in her kitchen.

What is the best way to keep a relationship interesting?
- variety and imagination…..or try this…become a more interesting person yourself…most folks that complain of being bored are boring themselves…they look to others for constant attention and entertainment….these are the types of leechs you need to avoid in dating..

There is truly something wrong with a “friendship” when the friend complains about how much time the person spends with his/her love interest…geesh…personally, I encourage as much together time as a couple can share…if that is what they truly enjoy…I may be adamant about being single and non-emotionally attached but I will stay in my lane…thank you…and if I have so little of a life that I need to attach myself to a friend for companion and diversion…then maybe therapy is required…geesh again.
BROMANCE…WTF!!!!…man ring…again, WTF!!!!…can we say BYE, BI…that is all I can imagine is that the male is bisexual or such…geesh for the third time…lol.

@Tazzee I missed the press conference but I am catch up on the case. The hoochie did not go to the po-po she went to civil court..she is suing Ben and 8 other employees of Harrah’s casino. I read the comments from the rape crisis folks on how victims don’t report. I get that. But most victims don’t lawyer up and go file civil cases either unless they are looking to get paid. You that tramatized by the experience go to the po-po and get a ruling there and then to court. This chick sees dollar signs.

Man what a beautiful day to be outside!
I believe that many women can grow with me to become my soul mate!
Marriage is the formula of becoming one with GOD!So, yes I truly believe in marriage!
On Cops: Some of my best friends are police officers so I hear a lot what they go thru and I give them the upmost respect at all times. I have yet to be pulled over randomly and if I do I give the officer therespect that I expect in return! I am a very lucky man because I speed all the time.
Being a sales representative I go into some of the most lily white areas and even though I have been trailed a few times I still have not been pulled over.
I’m o.k. with President Obama commenting on the Gates situation but he has to know it will be a distraction and he needs to think first before he speaks! We have to get this health legislation passed!

However, I’m proud to admit I’m kuntry when it comes to my background and kinfolk, but there are also other ethnicities floatin’ around in my genes as well. Actually, I’m still piecing it together with all of the questions that I ask. Okay…how about Dan?
Mr. Sensitivity. soft as twinkie filling. But to him, relationship shld be 50/50. He cut grass, u sack up the leaf pile and hand him leaf blower…cuz he’s cute LOL
j/p
He’ll make someone a lucky woman one day, once he overcomes his fears…by occasionally talking in circles. Otherwise, I see the potential of a ryder.
Then there’s Alvin – Though he’s Demigod by night. But you’d have to have a magic coochie to zap itself back into it’s normal size…he’s like the energizer bunny…he keeps going…and going…and going. LOL But he’ll make one helluva partner one day! LOL Badbody turned certifiedy ryder.
Abc – You know he doesn’t trust you, b/c you’re just a woman. But if you make him happy, he’ll let you be a stay-at-home woman, without wifin’ you up. All the perks, with no strings! Top that! LOL
PoppaG – Big guy…he aware of his own strength…and a walking encyclopedia/human GPS. So if you’re a little shorty, you’ll have to make up for the difference in height (with other attributes) to match his 6′8″ self…and work a catsuit! Gon’ head Mrs. G with your little 5′2″ self.

He knows a hard day’s work and will put the work in. For a relationship? Not so much. I think he definitely has it in him to give, but he fears giving it to the wrong one…again. (the story of a lot of folks’ lives) But I do believe once he finds himself a winner, she won’t be what he was expecting…like not knowing what you’re really thirsty for, until someone passes you a cold one…and you may find that it (she) hit the spot so well, that you’ll be double-checking the label.

Melo, the problem with health care in the US as it’s manifested in the past decade have primarily to do with 4-fold increase in medical costs, 8-fold increase in medical insurance revenues, and non-availability of affordable insurance for over 15% of the country’s population.
Medical costs escalate with big pharma payola to medical industry, specifically doctors themselves; the industry is referral oriented and pays on a fee-per-service basis, so the more tests, treatments and prescriptions that are specified, the more money the industry makes; they sock it to the insurance companies to pay for it, and the insurance companies compensate by charging more for premiums and denying treatments. This has everything to do with why America ranks at the bottom of industrialized countries in terms of chronic care and infant mortality while costing more than any other country.
I say, do away with fees-per-service, making the medical industry based on salary across the board; regulate big pharma and the insurance industry such that they can’t gouge and rackateer; watch costs drop as unnecessary tests, treatments, and prescriptions drop, along with more granular costs for each category; and come up with a plan that is similar to Medicare/Medicaid in function (I say in function, not in design) such that people who have jobs that don’t provide insurance have some coverage. Regulate stringently and punish non-compliance.
It wouldn’t cost any $3 trillion, either. But it would break ties with medical, pharma and insurance lobbies, powerful ones that hold much sway in Washington, and that may be a lot easier said than done. But it would mean put up or shut up, calling a spade and so on: are we all about politics, or are we all about making a health care system that benefits all citizens without penalizing any citizens?

I actually liked that Lewis had some competition. It woke him up. He is a nice guy but sometimes gets scarce around the district. He has held his position of almost 25 yrs. Don’t watch the talking heads on TV too much.
I’ve talked with a lot of Canadians that like their system of health care. They shake their heads at what people in the US have to deal with. Talk heads saying that our health care system is better are full of it. Both the UK and Canada are miles ahead of the US statistically in terms of chronic long-term care and infant mortality.
As far as how to legislate the medical industry to not include fees-per-service, that’s a discussion that might exceed the limits of typing them into the blog here.

The Infamous – I can definitely see a longterm relationship in the cards for you…AND may be marriage (at that). I just think the next woman should know up front that you both will be in LT committed relationship for at least another 10yrs+ before you even consider her for such a permanent position. Upfront communication & honesty at best. So don’t start gettin’ that itch for a rang after 18mos. Ain’t hatnin’!
Eli – Now this here is a positive man with his happy self! And that’s a good thing. Just “root” for one “team” at a time! However, I can see you attracting the same light that you give off.
W8 – Ohhh lawwwd…Let’s see…I see a handful to handle in the beginning…as he’s described on here, lots of layers. Like taking a lotta licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop. LOL Hard on the outside, but a nice slow, chew on the inside. However, the woman has to be able to hold her own quite well in the workforce… Go from being sweet to “street” at a moment’s notice, cook like Pattie LaBelle, and house like Mawtha(Martha) Stewart. You are another one…who’s fear keeps you from your blessings (relationship – wise). Damn, a deadline, and since you’re getting things back right with the Great I AM, that woman’s gonna come in HIS time, not yours. So smoke on that.

abc is right about the health care in Canada. My SO knows several folk in Canada and they love their health care system. I saw an ad on CNN yesterday with this woman supposedly from Canada dogging out their system. No doubt something the GOP put together.
Speaking of CNN, Lou Dobbs has been still barking about that Obama birth certificate mess. A major civil rights group, the Southern Poverty Law Center called for CNN to remove Dobbs because of his continued racist rants. CNN has not fired him, but they did say to Dobbs & his staff in no certain terms that the birth certificate story is DEAD.

@Swiss and others obviously you didnt get my memo about use of the word swagger. So I will repeat it.
Memo to all users of the word swagger to describe men.
If you have to use the word to describe yourself you do not have swagger. Swagger is not just a word..it is a wholeness. And frankly those with swagger don’t have to tell you they have it they just do. For example… Denzel Washington, LL Cool J, Nicholas Cage, John Travolta, and Avery Brooks just to name a few all have swagger.
If a man has swagger he has it in a 3 dollar pair of pants or a 3000 dollar suit. He does not put the swag on because he is already wearing. I grow weary of the overuse of this word…because it does such an injustice to those actually have swag. The Nicholas Bros, Duke Ellington they had swagger.
Some child name Solider boy whining about what he had for breakfast can not begin to understand what swagger is compared to them. The foolishness must end people.
Thank you.

@ Mo – I need do better at leaving early on Fridays. I took that loooong lunch talking on my cell phone in the hotel room, and then leaving for the kid’s competition for 1.5 was not to my benefit to get out of here a little earlier.

LOL…Oh forget you Melo!
Alright, Melo – You’re a man of tradition. No doubt your woman must be as well. But she can’ be too passive. You’re turned on by her defiance, as long as she keeps it under wraps when in the public eye. She’s so much more than a woman wrapped in one. She can be lady-like, as long as she your lady. A freak as long as she’s your freak. A bytch as long as she’s your bytch…you get the gist. But she has to be articulate and able to express herself very well. Outspoken to a point. But as long as you have the final say on important matters of the household and she recogizes when/where this comes into play….well that’s the bottomline.
She may be the QUEEN…but You are the KING.
W8 – Oh, I know…but just in case she had to go back on her grind, she’d probably have to be just as competitive in the workplace as she would be in the home.
