Defining Moments

It’s been surreal the past 24 hours. When news broke yesterday that Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson passed away, I got pensive. I usually become this way around birthdays (mine is Sunday!), just to reflect. However,  growing a year older just as the pop icons of my youth pass away, I definitely begin to recognize my own mortality as much as theirs.

I think we all have defining moments in our lives that shaped us who were are as people. It may have been good or bad, involving love or hate, but it had an impact on us. I think one of my defining moments involving romance is my first heartbreak. When someone I cared about did something unforgivable, I think it transformed my ability to trust.

When you have someone you thought you loved do something horrible to you, it makes you second guess yourself. It was a defining moment that I continue to work through. What’s an experience that’s shaped how you are today?

If you don’t care to share your defining moments, feel free to talk about what’s on your mind. Think of today as a day to reflect, laugh, and appreciate life. Life is beautiful. Life is short.

Although this is a sad day, Good morning everyone!

We asked yesterday who would be the 3rd person to go w/our Maker. No one would have thought it would be Michael Jackson. R.I.P. Mr. Jackson. You were truly loved. Your music will live on forever. I am so so sad and still in disbelief.

Morning all –

Sad news indeed. MJ is associated with so many happy memories from my childhood. I was at his BAD concert for pete’s sake!

My definining moment in dating: Probably when my college sweetheart and I broke up and he ceased contact cold turkey. I was devistated, I was insistant I needed “closure” and I did way extra to get it. But at the end of the day, I realized that once it’s done, it’s done and no amount of arguing or “stating my peace” will change someone’s mind, other than confirming he made the right decision.

It was a great lesson to learn early, and I’ve been making swift and clean breaks ever since and it has prevented TONS of messiness and drama from my life!

One of my defining moments that helped mold who I am today was when I was 19 and I left my mother’s home for the first time and got on a plane to attend college here in Georgia. Although I was scared shytless, my mother enstilled in me the strength and belief that I could do anything if I worked hard at it. I will never forget getting off that plane and dropping my heavy trunk on some man’s toes cuz I was crying and missed grabbing the handle. With the Grace of God and my mothers continued belief in me and my belief in “self,” I’m still forging ahead.

Good Morning Folks!!!

I’m still saddened and a bit numb about the passing of Michael Jackson. The thing is, I was never a big fan – sure I loved Thriller and Off the Wall, but it was more because everyone else was into him and his music was everywhere. The thing is, he was such a HUGE part of my generation. I remember going to see the Jackson 5 in concert when I was little. I’m talking about little to the point where the memory is a bit foggy. I remember teasing my older sister about her crush on Michael Jackson and us getting into multiple fights because of my teasing. I remember rushing home from school the day The Thriller video premiered and begging my grandmother to let me watch it. I remember a friend of mine that had every Michael Jackson button there was and wearing them ALL on her jacket.

So many memories….

I have so many defining moments. To focus on the positive, it would have to be trying out for the acting troupe first semester of my sophomore year. I’d never acted before in my life but I got the lead role in the play we were doing that semester: Tambourines to Glory. That production got canceled but I performed in some productions after that.

I think that brought me out of my shyness, now I have no problem getting up in front of people. Give me a mic and an audience and I’m in heaven ;-)

RIP King of Pop.

Every moment of life is a defining moment. Every single decision you make, or fail to make, shapes and defines your future in some way, big or small. Every moment counts, you can’t get back a single second, or undo a single decision. Everything matters, every second counts. Your future is determined by your past and present.

We asked yesterday who would be the 3rd person to go w/our Maker. No one would have thought it would be Michael Jackson.

The saying the three is defined as 1 elderly, 1 sick, 1 sudden.

I have an admission. Around the time that Amazon Red mentioned Pinks Hot Dogs yesterday, I got a call from one of the friends with whom I visited while in LA last year. That friend works for the LA Daily News. He told me that MJ was dead. I couldn’t confirm it anywhere at the time so I didn’t post it on here. I started seeing reports right when the blog closed a litttle after 5.

It is a funny thing because this friend’s dad called Monica Kaufman back in 77 to tell her that Elvis died before it hit the public.

I told my wife last night that I really wasn’t surprised. I have never been able to picture him as a old man. He had so much on his shoulders. He really sacrificed his life for his family.

I have always used him as an example to tell parents to let their kids have a childhood, and don’t rush the kids to the the “little man” or “little lady”. Let them be a boy and a girl as long as possible.

As for defining moments, I’ve had too many to recall on this forum but I’ve learned from all of them:

to live life to its fullest, never regretting anything;
be good to others today, for you may not have a chance to tomorrow;
be honest in all dealings, because deceit leaves a lasting impression;
explore options and test yourself to know what your limitations are and aren’t;

As far as relationships, those principles guide me in life and apply to relationships as well.

As an RIP to Mike (and a shameless plug for my homie) I present:

As far as defining moments (as it relates to Michael), I remember watching the Motown 25 anniversary with my family. I will say his music was music that the whole family could listen to. (I love Prince, but I had a hard time listening to Erotic City with Grandma in the vicinity.)

My first dates (w/o a parent driving us) was taking my girlfriend to the OMNI (where Philips Arena is now) for the Bad Tour.

i’m so saddened by the loss of such a great musical inspiration. mike is the greatest entertainer ever! i was a huge fan as a kid and into adulthood. i remember getting into big trouble when my family moved b/c all of my MJ posters on my bedroom walls caused the paint to come off(yes i used tape!) i had at least 3 zipper jackets and sported a curl…hard! i cried at the very thought of meeting the king of pop in person and getting an autograph. there is no other that has had the international impact he has an artist. he is loved near and far. you will forever be missed, MJ.:) we love you!

Now, MJ had some great pop tunes in the 1970’s and 80’s, and his talent of that era is undeniable, but it’s 20 years since anything of note came out of him, and he was a child molester.

Will OJ’s football career be celebrated when he passes? I kinda doubt it.

I am kinda like Tazzee in that I was a fan of the music more than the man per se. However, I recognize that he tried to make music that made a difference with Black or White, Man In the Mirror, You are not alone, etc. It probably would have sold more records if he’d followed the trends more than his desire.

Morning All & TGIF!

I was sad to hear about Mj’s passing as well. I am in shock and of course I watched coverage most of the night last night. My cell started blowing up w texts around 5pm.

Defining moments: My divorce and giving birth. While i have always prided myself on handling situations well, these two events tested everything I thought I knew about myself and who I was. A lil rough but I came out on top, a whole lot stronger and with my eyes opened just that much more.

Defining Dating Moment: When I had to call of an engagement. Hurt like hell (and dude flipped out on me) but I knew that marrying then was not right.

I’ll pop in later, headed for some sun now.

Good Morning All,

My birthday makes me reflect on my mortality more than the death of those I grew up with. Next year will be my 20 year high school reunion and I told a old classmate when were that age we thought all was possible and we could do it all. So in two weeks I will get reflective on mortality. I was stunned yesterday..and today I am annoyed. The media has played up all the bad stuff(drug abuse, anorexia, child molestation) other than a few news outlets no one is talking about his music. I try not to get to outdone when celebs died but instead look at what joy they brought to my world. In the case of the King of Pop..it was great music, great dance, and fun. I never adjusted to the scary MJ face because I always thought he was the coolest when he was living “off the Wall” that was the first album cover I had posted on my room wall. Sorry to see you go MJ but thanks for the good memories.

**WARNING–WARNING** I know it is tempting for people to put together powerpoint slides and video funeral programs..but the first person to send me one is going to get cussed the heck out. You have been warned.

Also to the Jackson family please for the love of all that is sane..do not take MJ’s body on some world wind funeral tour. Bury, Burn, Build a theme park but don’t do what the Brown family did. Thank you.

It’s less about the person and more about the cultural inclination to “not speak ill of the dead”.

Personally, I’m of the opinion that everyone is flawed and regardless of their contribution to society (large or small) each person deserves to be judged on the contributions; as opposed to the pettiness of one’s character flaws.

Michael Jackson was truly an awesome artist of his time. His music was also a part of my childhood. And yes abc I too believe that he was a child molester, but that he is something he has to answer to before God.

I not doing ishh at work today

MusingLee my assistant called me this morning at home, at 6:15am interrupting my bonding time with my daughter to tell me that 3 people called in saying they we so distraught that they were taking the day off to grieve. Okay not one of them is related to Michael Jackson in any way other than being of the human race. I called all of three and asked one question, “are you freaking kidding me?” One of them don’t have any personal or sick days left to take this year so she got her behind in to work. One of the other I told she better tell me something that makes sense, so she said she wasn’t feeling well and needed to take a sick day. The last one…LOL

Now on topic, I have had many defining moments in my life. The very first moment that I can recall that really knocked the breath out of me and made me view life as it really is, was the death of my first husband. That day is a day I will never forget. My heart fainted when I got that call. The path that event led me to is the one that has me where I am today.

DAN thank you for that comment. his contributions far out weigh any perceived flaws. people fail to remember that he was not accused of any crime. but as we all know, you are tried and convicted by the media regardless of the outcome in legal system. it amazes me that MJ is constantly referred to as a child molester when he was acquitted of all charges….i know that i wasn’t there but the only thing i do think he was guilty of is having relationships w/children that most people found bizarre or inappropriate. that doesn’t mean that it was sexually based.

The answer to the Farrah and Ryan question that you had is that they did not get married. According to Mrs. PG, Farrah wasn’t coherent enough during the last few weeks to do the ceremony. Legally, marriage is a contract and you need to have the ability to consent.

Poppa I think he was confirmed dead several hours before it hit the media. From what I can tell from listening to the report yesterday is he was taken to the hospital around 12:30 in the afternoon and he was not breathing when paramedics found him at his home. I think it was a little after 5 when the media officially announced that he had died.

@Kinder

The reason he was aquitted was because the DA used as their star witness a kid that had attempted to extort 4 OTHER celebrities, including Jay Leno (all testified at Mike’s trial).

I don’t judge people for their personal failings, as we’ve seen with this recent spate of politicians, if you choose to stand in judgement be prepared to accept the judgment of others.

My defining moment came On October 1, 1991 when my mother put me on a Greyhound bus bound for Atlanta. My parents weren’t happy and unhappy parents raise unhappy children and that was definitely me. Before that bus ride to the “A” I was getting into trouble and hanging with the wrong crowd b/c I was so unhappy at the time. This was a far cry for someone who graduated in the top 10% of thier high school class and had soo much potential. At first I was angry with my mom b/c she sent me away from home but it was for my own good and she knew that one day when I was older I would understand. Later that night as I rode on the Greyhound bus headed somewhere I’d never lived, with no family here to speak of I was scared as hell and didn’t know what to think…..but when I saw that famous Atlanta skyline that has graced so many post cards of/about Atlanta I knew at that moment that I wasn’t ever going to move back home. Once I got to the school I was going to I called my mom to let her know that I’d made it safely and the very first thing I said was “Mommy I’m never leaving this city….thank you for sending me here”. There were many times after that during alot of our conversations that I would just tell her “thank you” ’cause there’s no telling where I would’ve been had I still been home.

One night my mother told me a story that I still share with other people in who are where I once was…she said “Take a picture and hold it up very close to your face…you can see it but it’s not in focus, right?….put a little distance between your face and the picture and you see that when you put some distance between yourself and THE BIG PICTURE you can see it more clearly”. She said you had to distance yourself away from home to see the bigger picture and see that YOU HAD TO LEAVE. That saved my life and to this day I still get choked up talking about it…my eyes are watering right now and the best thing is my mother happens to be in town RIGHT NOW…..GOD IS GOOD Y’ALL.

Last night while listening to the news Mason said that he always thought Michael Jackson would commit suicide because he had fallen so far from where he used to be. And then with all his legal troubles hovering over him he said that he thought he would either just kinda disappear from the limelight or kill himself.

Considering how bad he had altered his body I felt that something would soon happen to him. I didn’t think he would die just yet, but I thought we would hear that he was really ill as the result of how he did himself.

I learned that politics, in part, is the balancing act of “mutually assured destruction”, no doubt some of his opponents (and allies) had this information (the local paper had the story in December, but did not publish it), so it is probably a combination of conscious and the fear of being exposed.

By all accounts, he was a “strange, but honorable” guy that held his beliefs stridently. I think his moment(s) of weakness overwhelmed him to the point that he was getting sloppy with it.

Honesty is a beautiful thing, and while he was accused of a number of crimes, let’s remember that he was aquitted too. That honesty door swings both ways.

But the day after someone’s passing remembering the best of them is the thing to do.

Not to take anything from Michael Jackson gift of music but you can’t discredit his actions just because of who he is and you like him.

Yes indeed, it is truly a sad day with the passing of Michael Jackson…sad indeed.

I was a huge fan of the teen mags of my day…I bought every single issue, every single month…just to tear out the pictures of the Jackson 5 and put them on my wall…especially the pics of Michael and Jermaine…I lived for and loved me some Jackson 5…I remember going to see their concert in 1972…”I Wanna Be Where You Are”…in 1983, when I was 7 months preggers, I had everyone on the dance floor doing the Thriller…lol../my daughter said that she was born to listen to Michael Jackson.

Life Defining moment: coming to the realization that I am the sole party responsible for my emotional well-being…not.someone.else…period….once I was able to wrap myself around that concept I then begin the process of eliminating any relationships that were emotionally painful.

MJ missed his childhood, and spent most of his adult life trying to buy back that childhood. By that time, it was inappropriate for a physically grown man to play with kids.

I have serious doubt whether he mentally or emotionally grew up.

Listening him talk about Tatum O’neal wanting to do naughty things with him while they were teenage sweethearts, and he still looked embarrassed about it (in the interview in which he had to be in his 40s.

I was thinking to myself. Teenagers like to do naughty things. He talked about it as if she was crazy.

MJ was a man-child due to his upbringing! Blame that on his dad!
He wanted to re-live the youth that he never really lived to enjoy.Thats why he turned out the way he did.
My defining moment:his death reminds me of my ex wife whilst we were living in Zimbabwe.
I was wrking outa town(Harare) and an MJ concert was gonna be beamed live, that friday eve, outa London. So she taped it for me.
The one hr and half show was off da chain and had me glued to the sofa nd tv,non stop.I remember vividly his lady lead guitarist(it must have been some guns and roses guitarist,if i aint mistaken) and she had me spell bound.
Of all entertainers,he is the only one i truly would have wanted to seelive,(ofcourse Bruce Springstreen is another)
Celebrity took its toll on this guy.I believe he had lots of health issues and was never man enough to be able to deal with life’s vissisitudes coz in his brain,he was a real kid and ill advised.
So huge in stature,so talented and made lots of money but never able to live long enough to enjoy all that.
Lyfe is a muffckker biaaaaatch and can trip you in a moment!
Make it a point to enjoy urselfves always.
(Queen and I are headed to Harristons today to dance and drink away MJ, tonite)

i know that my statement may seem convenient b/c of who it is. i try my best to consider the circumstances and the psyche of a person before making a general statement of why they did whatever was done. so i can’t tell you what i’d say if it were my neighbor b/c i don’t know the circumstances…but i can tell you this…any person who had a childhood such as his and was subjected to the incredibly microscopic dissection of his/her every move at all times which caused them to retreat into an eternal childlike state would get consideration from me. before i called them a child molester, i would consider the possibility that they are underdeveloped by some emotionally traumatic life event(s). my perception on what happened w/him is an extension of my empathetic nature because he is a person….not b/c he’s MJ.

I was never really a huge fan of MJ (other than Thriller & Off The Wall), but his passing is definitely sad — to me, in part because MJ himself always seemed such a sad figure. I wonder if the man ever had even a single moment of normalcy in his whole life?

Morning good people!

I was a major MJ fan and he was a major part of my childhood/teen years. I saw him perform 5 times – 3 w/his brothers & twice by himself. Awesome, like watching a 2 hour long video. House parties playing the entire Off the Wall & Thriller albums. They’ll never be another talent like him. May he truly rest in peace cause he didn’t get any on earth.

Defining moments – Remembering high school graduation day. HS was not the greatest time for me so I looked forward to college and never looked back. My parents dropping me off at UGA. My first “real” job in the business world. Hearing my dad tell me my mother had cancer. Taking my mom to Olympic events and her dying a month later. Going to the house and having my dad tell me my brother had died in a car accident. Being hit in the car by a tractor trailer and living to tell about it. Caring for my ill father. Meeting the wonderful man I’m seeing now.

Having dealt with tragedy, I have a different perspective than most. My late brother lived his life to the fullest. My parents encouraged me to always pursue excellence and that there were no shortcuts in life. I try to live like it’s my last day and enjoy the time God is giving me on this earth. Enjoy my POSITIVE family and friends. I don’t do negative people, so that’s why I don’t waste my time anymore with sorry men. Stop & smell the roses. Dream big & live big. Don’t let anyone tell me I CAN’T do something. Yes I can.

Being 11, voice crackin, puberty and you gotta hang out with your 5 older brothers and be the star of a performance.

Michael Jackson is not the only kid that has been robbed of a childhood. Where my father is from many little boys were denied schooling and put to work on farms at very young ages. Those little boys worked like men in those fields. That’s why my father’s grandfather brought him here so he could go to school and get an education. You think all of those little boys that had to work instead of play didn’t evolve into normal men. Do you think they used the excuse that they didn’t get to play like normal children so after they grew up they preferred spending their time sleeping in the bed with little boys as their playmates?

We can go back and forth at this all day, so I am stepping away and saying we agree to disagree.

Events in life affect everyone differently.

My mom once told my dad to remember that the same boiling water that makes an egg hard makes a carrot soft.

She said this in response to him treating my sister the same way that he treated me. The tough methods used on me didn’t have the same effect on her and it did me. It speaks to the individuality of us all.

Exactly Poppa. Those parents sold their kids out. They pimped them.

But the only person that set him up was himself. There were too many cases that surfaced. Even if the first event was innocent seeing how it transpired why would you continue to put yourself in the same situation over and over again.

And yet I still say all of the 40 year old men that I know would rather be spending their leisure time with a grown woman (or man) than with someone’s child.

His first stumble was when he was seen carrying Emmanuel Lewis on his hip. Emmanuel Lewis was a teenager at the time. He too seemed a little odd for riding a grown man’s hip.

thank you for your comment. i work w/children and love them very much. it is an extremely sensitive topic for me when ppl want to apply a “one size fits all” mentality to actions of others. all of the children i’ve taught over the years were beautiful and unique. i think of how much i would have missed out on as a teacher if i had treated all of them the same regardless of their circumstances. an animal that walks like a duck and quacks ain’t always a duck. it could be a misguided goose…lol. i say that to explain that taking time to look at not just the outside but the inner characteristics can avoid alot of misdiagnosing. i have seen so much in the past decade in the children i’ve serviced. i think often about how misunderstood they will be in life b/c not everyone will take the time to see who they really are. it can be overwhelming at times….it is true that we all have endured hardships and turmoil but we have processed those events much differently b/c of our differences. that is not a bad thing, it just contributes to our uniqueness.

The house falls black, fog bellows from the stage right entrance, a single spotlight peers into the thick plume. Nothing but a sparkle can be seen. Then you hear the “click, click” of polished leather shoes, next a glimpse of pearly white socks, black pants….A wave of people stand as if catapulted from their seats.. Kids are screaming, grown women are crying and hugging each other, men are jumping with arms outstretched. Mike does a four step combo to no music; you hear the scratch of his shoes across the stage. He now stands with his famous diamond encrusted red zipper jacket flapping in the wind, white shirt beneath. There is a combustible energy in the crowd and it’s searching for a spark. Michael slowly grabs his right pant leg, lifts his foot and swivels around landing with clutched fist raised. The bass line can be heard beating beneath the screams, keeping the crowd alive. Mike’s face is frowned and focused. Eyes glaring, hips churning….This is want the crowd wants……Billie Jean!! Someone shouts…A woman from the front row can be seen being carried away after fainting. A man in the balcony looks as if he will climb over the ledge to get a better picture. Michael grabs the mic, singing “She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene..” The crowd erupts; you can barely hear the rest of the lyrics. Mike is thrusting his hips with robotic accuracy…The moment is magical, seemingly slowing in time. Most hoping Billie Jean never ends and Mike dances forever. But before you know it, the sparkly glove is raised and Mike is being lowered into the belly of the stage. Bright lights and smoke machines cover his escape. Your chest is thumping, the crowd is chanting, little girls are crying and clutching stuff animals, but Mike has left the building.

If I can talk briefly about faith, Andy Stanley, the minister at North Point, said something in one of his series that I have seen the wisdom of many times since. He said if you wait long enough, “you will see the thumbprint on the glass”.

There have been a number of “defining moments” in my life, many of them causing me to look skyward and ask the big “why?” question. The answer comes eventually, but almost never in the time frame I would like it to. Now when I look back, although I would not wish some of those “defining moments” on anyone, I understand now why they had to happen to bring me to where I am and who I have become.

Maybe some of you know him, I only know of him, but there is a Reverend Otis Moss. Andy Stanley was standing with him at a prayer breakfast a few months ago where they were going to be introduced to the first African American President. Rev. Moss told Andy some of his story, a teenaged black orphan in middle GA during the 1950’s, part of the civil rights movement, and had seen some of the worst that this country had to offer and somehow came to and kept his faith. He recited a familiar Bible verse to Andy, Romans 8.28, that says “and we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him”. Then Rev. Moss got a distant look in his eye and said, “but sometimes it takes awhile”.

Wait long enough and, IMHO, one does see the “thumbprint”. “Sometimes it takes awhile”.

Wow, I actually agree with Melo’s 11:37. Also, the so-called Joe Blow’s history is almost always talked about. Typically, the first thing asked is something relating to abuse or what kind of childhood they had, etc. I guess for me during my career in Social Work and Child Welfare I see it in a different way. I also agree with Kinderbabe’s assessment earlier.

BeenThruItAll although you initially agree, the but in your statement leads me to say, well if that’s the case we may as well empty out the prisons and let every man and woman go free ‘cause every criminal got their story.

Whether they didn’t have a father figure around, or their mother whipped their behind abused them, or they grew up in poverty stricken environments, or they were robbed of their childhood we all can appoint blame for the error of our ways. I imagine every individual sitting in jail can give you a story of their past why they ended up how they did. While there are 5 outside of the prison that can give the same story but made better choices in life despite it.

Raqi

Melo that’s because no one cares to make excuses for Joe Bloe. He is a nobody and he gets punished for what he does. Even if Joe Bloe’s mother begged at the mercy of the court to let him go free because he did not have a childhood therefore leading him to molest children, won’t nobody want to hear that.

Especially the mother’s of those children. The problem in MJ’s cases is the mothers were paid off. I guarantee if those women were not getting anything out of it they would not have looked the other way.

That’s just like a woman looking the other way when her child tells her that man that is her boyfriend is molesting said child. Some of those mothers don’t want to be without that man so they look the other way.

Melo you telling me if a man molested one of your kids you would be okay with that given his history of not being able to go out and play with his was a little boy. You will tell the court to let him go free.

@ Raqi re: “I imagine every individual sitting in jail can give you a story of their past why they ended up how they did. While there are 5 outside of the prison that can give the same story but made better choices in life despite it”.

I agree 100%. Every one (except for a few true psychopaths maybe) has an awareness of right and wrong, no matter what kind of childhood he/she had. We all make choices regarding our actions and the consequences of those actions. Somehow “accountability” is apparently a word from some dead language these days.

@W8

No, you cannot excuse choice.

But what you can do is to try and relate to the conditions that created the person that made the choice<— empathy

For whatever Mike did and didn’t do, his life was abnormal at best, criminally negligent at worst. But we can choose to remember the man as a recluse, a pervert, and/or a musician (some would argue one of the greatest).

In the end, it’s the perception of the person making that judgment. I can only say that with all my personal faults, I would hope that when I meet my maker the good outnumbers the bad.

bringing joy and memories to Billions and whatever else he’s done in his life. But I’m not qualified to make that decision (over my pay grade)

These are not things to be adjudicated by man, IMO.

No one is saying forgive anyone for doing anything inappropriate to little kids. I’m saying just understand like someone said earlier, the cause of why things like this happened. And there are a myriad of different reasons. In fact, I bet Psychologists and Sociologists would argue different perspectives based on certain things. I, for one, come from the Sociological perspectives, which basically believes that these type of things happen in large part, because of the person’s environment and the societal factors in which they were raised. JMHO.

I am not saying MJ was not a great artist, I said that in my first comment but that does not excuse his other actions.

Should that fireman’s wife who gets beat overlook the beatings because her husband pays the bills? Or in your example, saved that child. Should just pretend like the beatings aren’t happening because he did his job as a fireman?

I would not characterize Michael Jackson as a musician. He was a singer, entertainer and media superstar. Singers are not musicians by definition. Once upon a time singers weren’t even allowed to join the Musician’s Union; now all you have to do to join is sign up online and pay dues with a credit card.

Moreover, characterizing RKelly as a ‘musical genius’ is a gross misrepresentation. That’s just crazy. True musical genius is not illiterate in the ways of reading, writing, composing, orchestrating, arranging and performing music, and all you have to do is listen to RKelly to discover that he knows nothing of any of those things — if one is trained in those skills themselves, it’s quite obvious that he’s not a musician at all, much less a ‘musical genius’.

Melo you telling me if a man molested one of your kids you would be okay
The person aggrieved is the least objective,,in this example of urs me, but i may try.
Letting me have that info about joe blow at trial is proly too late to affect my emotions and objectivity.Depending on the defense strategy thru discovery,if i get a detailed piece about that person’s lyfe and iam willing to read it and process, maybe well before hand, i proly wld be more understanding.May not be okay with it , to use ur wrd,but may forgive him and let the justice system run its own course.

A musician is a person who plays or writes music. Musicians can be classified by their roles in creating or performing music:

An instrumentalist plays a musical instrument.
A singer (or vocalist) uses his or her voice as an instrument.
Composers, songwriters and arrangers create musical compositions, songs and arrangements. These may be transcribed in music notation, performed or recorded.
A conductor leads a musical ensemble. A conductor can simultaneously act as an instrumentalist in the ensemble.

I see MJ AND RKELLY both in there as singers.

Melo, musicians would tend to disagree with your assessment, especially classical and jazz musicians. MJ himself may never have achieved his pop success without one of the true American musical geniuses of our time, Quincy Jones. His was the genius; MJ’s was the performance of it.

Yes, Page, I certainly know what music is. I know its history and representation all over the world — quite a bit beyond what American pop culture would put forth.

Gain some perspective. The best selling album of all time is ‘The Eagle’s Greatest Hits’, released in 1976. Based on that sales achievement, would you call anything The Eagles ever did ‘musical genius’? Fact is, true musical genius is generally recognized pretty early on, is cultivated and schooled, and winds up in genres that aren’t all that popular. For instance, the principal clarinetist in the Atlanta Symphony shows more musical genius in a single performance than RKelly does in his entire catalog, and she’s merely a very, very good musician.

Popularity does not represent real musical value.

Poppa he saw something because he would never have entertained that fake marriage with Lisa Marie Presley if he didn’t need to prove that he was a grown man.

I don’t think that he made that decision. People always told him what to do. He had handlers, entourage, etc. He was worried more about image.

I think that the Neverland was him.

But whatever, his peers acquitted him and I respect their decision. He lived in their community, not mine.

Going to that Bad concert, and seeing grown women screaming, yelling, and crying just because they were in the same room as him, just showed me the level of fame that he had. No part of his life was normal at all. So, it is difficult to just it against anybody that I know. He had a level of fame that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

He couldn’t go to Popeye’s and get a two-piece if he wanted to do so without fans, paparazzi, etc following him. I bet you and most people that you know. Without normalcy, there is no place to retreat when things really get crazy.

There is no real comparison.

R.Kelly is no way near the level of star that Michael was. Worldwide appeal is no way close. America maybe, but try Australia.

It is no comparison.

It is funny that I am even making this argument. My wife was looking at me in disbelief last night because I was watching the NBA draft. She was wondering why wasn’t sitting with her watching the MJ coverage.

That’s not equivalent to anything I’ve said today.

For one, regardless of his problems, Mike made decisions with an adult mind. And as an adult and conscoius human being he had to come to terms with than in his own way. I don’t forgive him his decisions.

Two, I’m not judging the man either. I don’t feel it’s my place to judge anyone’s action. I don’t have the power to say what right from wrond for anyone but me.

And three, I can do both of the aforementioned and still respect the man as an artist (despite what abc thinks), a musician, and for how his music affected me personally.

Not only that. Lawyers are taught to make as many allegations that wouldn’t be considered frivolous. That way if you can’t prove one thing, there are other ways to win money for your client.

For example, Mick Vick had battery charges, assault charges (they are separate causes of action), that were all part of that sexual assualt/VD case. Even if one thing couldn’t be proved, there are others in there to win or hold as leverage towards a settlement. I don’t know if his VD test results came back positive or not, but there were other allegation in which he could settle. Most settlements don’t specify what counts that they are settling.

Johnnie Cochran, who represented MJ in the 1990s cases, was good enough to get specification in those early 1990 cases that MJ denied the sexual assault charges.

Sometimes, it is like throwing stuff on the wall and seeing what sticks.

True, but Johnnie Cochran was at least a good enough attorney to get denials to the sexual allegations put in the settlement agreement.

Why would the parents of the children agree to let him off the hook this way. They wanted money more than to put him on blast.

If you love kids, you wouldn’t want him to get away that easy. Espeically, if you kid is involved.

When all of the allegations about MJ’s “inappropriate” conduct and interaction with young boys surfaced…my first thought was that there needed to be evidence that he committed a sexually explicit act with them in order to be classified a pedophile…but that was before it was explained to me that a person is classified as a pedophile not for having sexual relations with a young person, but rather because they are sexually aroused by interaction and responses from young ppl…i.e he would be classified a pedophile if he was sexually aroused by the his interaction with young ppl even if he did not have sex with them…say something as simple as buying them gifts and their responses to the gifts sexually aroused him…then he is a pedophile…well, that settled that for me…and there may be some truth in that.

In truth, you can’t prove arousal in a court of law. So…even then.

Like PG said (and we all believe partly) it was more about money than the children.

When u are a celeb and a twisted one at that like MJ,settling was proly the best option. He liked to lya with boys, that he admitted to.So if u make urslef vulnerable like that,in this america,u tossed.
Money lving pple in this country are gonna thrw ish at u to get some of it,they may not succeed if u decide to go to court, but u tossed,PR wise.
I dont know anybody then who cld have survived 3,4,5 similar legal cases like that and not go to jail, even if they were frivolous. At some point, some juries wld have to say(in their minds),u know what, based on the other stuff we have heard,u guilty. Its just human nature.
Jurors aint perfect.
MJ did the best thing to defend his image by settling,in my view.Companies on wall street do the same, and load up the justice dept with loads of money, just to walk away and save their reputations.
If i win the lotto in a substantial way, trust, i am leaving my zip code.Coz all those broke ass households will want a piece of me and will claim that their kids got hurt in ma tree house.

Explain yourself PG!!!

If she was overbearing and as ruthless as it is starting to seem, a man will only take that for so long. Then, he will get what he wants and needs elsewhere or he will fight back. (fight or flight response again).

Rev.Thomas Weeks got to point where he tried to stomp Juanita. Even quiet men, have a point.

Between stomping a chick orcheating on her, I rather cheat because I won’t catch a case for cheating.

It goes to what most of the men on here state. We’d rather have respect over love. Sanford may not have gotten the respect and went elsewhere. Ms. Maria Argentina may have given him that respect and the could have opened the door to love her.

I did not establish the definition of a pedophile…I learned about it from a psychologist…I did not even know myself…and according to the professionally and legally established definition of a pedophile there only has to be a level of sexual arousal from interacting with young ppl that determines the classification…period…not any explicit act of molestation…and that is what I thought made one a pedophile…and that is the way it is…imagine that.

So, uh yes Dan…there can be legal grounds for charges based on that definition…never knew. myself…but I got enlighten.

I also love D’Antoni and I think Nash would do good there as he has mastered the pic and roll under D’Antoni’s leadership. I remember one of the Arizona Cardinals players was having a “2007 Wipe Me Down Pool Party” at his house, so the place was packed with players, groupie chicks, and other people. Anyway, so me and my cousin Becki are in the pool and there were only like 4 girls including us in the pool, then some dudes started throwing girls in the pools with their clothes, shades, everything on. It was hilarious. So, shortly after it got dark, I noticed everyone going inside the house. So, my cousin and I went in to go to the bathroom and guess what…Amare’ was in there. Check this out…there were SOOOOO many groupie girls doing what I call “dos muchos” to get his attention. Don’t you know, he was sitting on the couch playing video games with 2 other dudes like he didn’t even notice! The girls were doing any and everything to get his attention and he never turned away from the tv lol. A few people didn’t know he was there until he stood up and walked into the kitchen. Dude is sooooooooo tall and skinny (but cute lol). Anyway, he was nice and my cousin actually knew him. He wanted to take pics with us which we did, but we noticed that when other people asked him, he would say no. When I first moved to Phoenix, I did a brief stint in the public relations office and when someone would call the office, I had to answer the phone by saying “Thank you for calling the America West Arena, home of the 2003 Rookie of the Year Amare’ Stoudemire, how may I help you”? Divorce was probably coming anyway.

PG – Right. Which is why he shouldn’t have agreed to some separation from hopes of reconsilation or working on the marriage. He could have fully gone with the route of “if I’m out, we’re through.”

Seems as he let her hold some of the cards. If he didn’t care, he should have just chucked the deuces to her demands. Especially if “divorce is coming anyway.”

Who said ole boy couldn’t go to Argentina?

Front page of the AJC, Kym.

South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford says she warned her husband not to see his mistress before a trip last week and was shocked he met her in Argentina anyway.

Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press that she discovered Gov. Mark Sanford’s affair in January when she found a letter from him to the other woman. She said she told him to end the affair and he agreed to.

She said that when the governor told her recently he needed time alone to write, she specifically warned him not to visit the mistress. She was shocked to learn this week that he’d gone to Argentina to do just that.

They had a letter on CNN that Jenny Sanford released saying she still loved her husband and that he earned a second chance. So even if she was not at the press conference, she is still standing by her man, if only behind the scenes.

Jenny is still being the puppetmaster and he’s going right along with it. Stupid. I don’t feel a bit sorry for either one of them. I think the whole thing is hillarious and a soap opera for the good Christian GOP. Blame lies with both of them – she’s no more the villian here than he is.

To me it’s a classic Ross vs. Rachel “we were on a break” type episode. If you’re trying to work on your relationship, you’re really not supposed to be getting azz from other people while you decided if you want to move forward or not. (and you certainly shouldn’t be getting azz from the person that was a reason for the “break” in the first place  ).

But then on the flip side, you’re on a break, so explore all options.

Let me just state that I am one that believes if the issues are that bad then divorce, terminate the relationship. But I also know that if I’m controlling and doing things to intentionally hurt my husband that there will be some consequences.

I think the entire affair was wrong – I’m just saying I can see where dude is coming from based on what appears to have happened. And as far as Mrs. Stanford – there’s nothing to ’stick by’ concerning this situation.

That’s like saying if I’m cussing my husband out when he gets in every day and treating him like a dog, and he subsequently finds comfort elsewhere that I have no blame in this situation. I just don’t think it’s all his fault. Now his hypocritical actions in condemning other adulterers – that’s another story.

And I do believe that keeping a man away from his children is wrong. If he’s a good father, using the kids as a pawn because he hurt you is wrong – it’s dead a-double-snakes wrong.

u right Tazz.In this instance, coz she had known of this for the past 5 months,i kind dont understand her tempestousness at this juncture.
But i will absolve a woman who does that if shes just known. She will calm down after she comes to her sense but initially, she may go those extremes.
I feel for these southern thumper wives. The pompousness and the high road their husbands proclaim in public is in stark contrast to their pvt and secret lyves.
When they discover, they get crushed and their lyves go dwon hill.

Thats why us playas lead happy lives. We real, our women are on the prowl, looking and wading off potential heifers and hoes and the adrenalin is awlays high.

I guess that I talked about Mike with Raqi this morning. Unless she was part of the case (prosecution or defense) she doesn’t know all details.

Same here. Sloppy pimping is judgmental. There are three sides to every story. What he says, what she says, and what really happened. We don’t know the third story.

You never know when you might need that presumption of innocence for one of your loved ones side.

Good grief…this man is on tv admitting that he lied and that he’s had an extra marital affair. His attempt to keep this trip a secret was ill planned and one of the reasons it didnt work.

These are just facts as they are reported and this is a relationship blog. Lighten up. We talk about way heavier topics on this. And most often in order to state an opinion on given a topic, you have to form a judgement on what you read upon coming to MIA.

I don’t need to hear all sides to have a fun discussion as it relates to blogging. We never get all sides from the topics WD posts. So what is the big deal now?

no,just salt and a lil baking soda to make them a lil soft since they are kinda rough.U can then add oil if u like or mix(cook) them with some peanut butter for a different taste and tomatoes!
U just cook them the same way u may cook other veggies only diff is they have to be on the stove for 10/15 mins coz they are softer that kale, collards or other such veggies.
We eat them with fufu(ugali-swahili,sadza-shona,nzima-tonga (i think) etc) This fufu(not the nigerian one) is corn mix like grits(only diff is its harder than grits or reg porridge)

I don’t know what the blog monster is up to, so one last try…

Peeking in and no plan to comment but the topic made me fondly recall something. A great defining moment for me happened after taking a deep breath and walking into the hospital, which I hate, but it was where I had to go since my mother asked to go. Knowing that much spoke volumes b/c she also hated it and having fought cancer as it travelled throughout her body for a number of years, had been one too many times. Anyway, they call me “mommie.” And she just looked at me and said “Mommie, I’m tired. Is that okay?” I smiled and without hesitation, said “Absolutely, Mommy.” And I meant it wholeheartedly. It was a few weeks before my 28th birthday but the first time I truly felt I owned my womanhood. Giving my mother permission to die was both the easiest and hardest thing I’ve ever done. And if she hadn’t always ingrained in me that tomorrow is not promised, I can’t say that I could’ve… Have a lovely weekend, y’all :)
