Defining Moments

It’s been surreal the past 24 hours. When news broke yesterday that Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson passed away, I got pensive. I usually become this way around birthdays (mine is Sunday!), just to reflect. However,  growing a year older just as the pop icons of my youth pass away, I definitely begin to recognize my own mortality as much as theirs.

I think we all have defining moments in our lives that shaped us who were are as people. It may have been good or bad, involving love or hate, but it had an impact on us. I think one of my defining moments involving romance is my first heartbreak. When someone I cared about did something unforgivable, I think it transformed my ability to trust.

When you have someone you thought you loved do something horrible to you, it makes you second guess yourself. It was a defining moment that I continue to work through. What’s an experience that’s shaped how you are today?

If you don’t care to share your defining moments, feel free to talk about what’s on your mind. Think of today as a day to reflect, laugh, and appreciate life. Life is beautiful. Life is short.

ARed- Ok, yes, I remember Darrell. Oh ok, I was wondering why she always put that and I never clicked on it. I didn’t know he got married. Maybe he is not in wedded bliss because maybe if he was, she would have mentioned it? Maybe not…who knows.

R.Kelly is no way near the level of star that Michael was. Worldwide appeal is no way close. America maybe, but try Australia.

It is no comparison.

Thank you!!!!

I never said R.Kelly compared to MJ. I said he didn’t. What I did say was that some consider him to be a musical genius. So, ok, based on what you said, those people who think he is don’t know what they are talking about and you do, right? Point well take.

My wife was looking at me in disbelief last night because I was watching the NBA draft. She was wondering why wasn’t sitting with her watching the MJ coverage.

 I love MJ and all but I switched over to the Real Housewives of NJ reunion at 9. Sho did.

Besides, all the coverage ran down his whole life. I don’t need to be reminded of the child molestation charges and him dangling his kid over that balcony. My memory works fine.

According to an article on CNN.com…MJ almost took down the internet between 2:40 and 3:15 yesterday…wow.

Michael Jackson was a major impact on pop culture, music and dance…even James Brown was in awe of him…lol…JB wanted to put his cape on MJ and he refused…lol…and when all is said and done…he will long be remembered for the socks, the glove, the snap/kick head and leg move, and music that crossed generations…and as for the rest…let God handle His business with the bro.

@Raqi…I was agreeing with you…the BUT was that I also look at my next door neighbor sideways also…regardless of social status we are all human and I take everybody the same…just like someone else said, I was watching the draft last night, not coverage of MJ…call me when Ice Cube dies, I like rap music better anyway….

The only reason why I even mention it is because the whole “getting married” thing was unsolicited. We were very happy for him. It’d be nice to know how things are going.

abc,
yeah,im not surprised, coz u happen to be belong to either one of those u quoted.
I do know many jazz and classical intrumentalists who dont sing in their compositions coz they rhymme like drunk horses.Do u regard them as musicians based on ur narrow defition??

That definition by the way,is not mine.
Find me any other reputable definition of a musician that differs materially with the one i gave you.
Maybe that will help shape our discourse.

I got my call about 4:35 eastern time. I guess that is about 1:35 pacific. That is about an hour after the 911 call.

My friend just told me that they were working on a story that Mike had a heart attack, and was being rushed to the hospital and possibly already dead.

“Michael Jackson was a complicated human being who was [denied] a childhood in order to provide us with great musical and dancing entertainment,” Willies went on. “But with all his wealth and success he never seemed happy with himself. He never viewed himself as we viewed him: simply the best entertainer alive. May he rest in peace, his demons left behind.”

Minnesota and Denver are my new teams to hate.

The Hawks were so close to getting Ty Lawson. One pick away. Minnesota picked 28 point guards last night.

I think Teague might be good, too. He can shoot. Ty would have allowed the Hawks to run because he is so fast, though. Woodson can’t develop a half court offense so the Hawks need to run to be successful. That was painfully obvious in the Cleveland series.

@Raqi

That’s not equivalent to anything I’ve said today.

For one, regardless of his problems, Mike made decisions with an adult mind. And as an adult and conscoius human being he had to come to terms with than in his own way. I don’t forgive him his decisions.

Two, I’m not judging the man either. I don’t feel it’s my place to judge anyone’s action. I don’t have the power to say what right from wrond for anyone but me.

And three, I can do both of the aforementioned and still respect the man as an artist (despite what abc thinks), a musician, and for how his music affected me personally.

Again, your 12:53 in no way relates to anything I’ve said.

Oh, did I mention he was found NOT GUILTY!?!?!?!

I didn’t shed a tear either.

But, I know that in law, that a duck isn’t always a duck.

Especially in cases with circumstantial evidence such as his case was.

Settlements are really based on how well the pleadings (complaints, answers, etc.) are drafted. Words matter in the world of law. One word can mean the difference between winning and losing a lot of money.

No AmRed I didn’t cry, I was shocked b/c it all unfolded so quickly…first he was in the hospital so I thought “Okay this has happened before so he’ll be okay’..then he’s dead and I was stunned…completely stunned. First Farah then in the same day Michael so I was taken aback for sure. Then I turned on the radio, listened to some of his music and did the moonwalk on my kitchen floor……

That “words matter” and the politics of embarrassment and PR plays a really large role in settlements.

That’s why one can settle out of court and not accept anywronging.

Speaking of Amare, I met him a few weeks back. I may have posted about it here.

He was in town (he is here alot, I think that he has a place here). He, too, has a rap label or something. He was here in the office.

@BTUI

No doubt Mike was, at the very least, a troubled soul. But, again, settling doesn’t impart guilt, it only implies it.

The whole point of what I’m saying is that, while I don’t excuse Mike for his alledged behavior, I can’t separate that from my love of his music and sadness that he’s gone.
