Where is your label?

Sexual orientation can be a touchy topic among single people on the dating scene. Some people want to know immediately; some try to guess, while others make a fool of themselves with assumptions. Do you think it is rude and impolite to inquire about sexual orientation?

I am a pretty friendly person so a lot of times I like to get clarification about whether I am engaging in friendly chat with a stranger or if we are checking each other out for potential romance, number exchange, or whatever. I have simply asked outright. Not in a malicious way or to offend, I just put it out there so I can get clarity: Do you date women, men, or both?

Do you ask people their orientation when you first meet them? Have you ever been asked the “which team are you playing for” type of question? How did you react?

I have known women who consider themselves bisexual. I am not sure if it means anything, but they currently are seeking/are in relationships with men. Their attraction for women is still there and they openly tell men about their past experiences and it does not seem to impede them.

Guys, what do you think about women who have had relationships with both genders? Could you see yourself in a serious relationship with one?

Ladies, if a man admitted to having prior experiences with other men, is that an immediate turn off for you? Do you feel comfortable discussing this type of thing with someone you are getting to know?

What do you think about sexual labels: straight, gay, bisexual..etc. Are they necessary or not important?

Touchy topic, so let’s keep the discussion adult and clean.

@abc

The 3/5 apportionment was used to justify discrimination, segregation, and slavery.

It was the Emancipation Proclamation that began to end that thought process. The Dred Scott Supreme Court case that defined the “separate but equal” statute (which some still argue was wrongly decided).

And not until the Voting Rights Acts and the Legislation tied to Kym’s earlier posting did the 3/5 rule no longer apply to codified law.

@Dan – I agree with you. My only point was regarding discrimination and the consideration that one is beyond compassion due to a particular aspect of who they are. Most people think because you’re gay that you are a demoralized human being that will bust the gates of hell wide open. I could list the negative comments that come along with being gay as I can as being black. My point was only the discriminination in any form is harmful with permanent affects as long as the discriminatory condition exists (black, handicapped, etc..) to the recipient of the discrimination. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that racial discrimination is the worst kind because it can not be changed and was never an individual choice like some think homosexuality is. I am not taking that away from you Dan.

Strictly political; but, point taken, the best legal and political minds of the day saw nothing wrong with writing such a compromise into our Constitution. It’s a poignant indication of the times.

I agree with this part.

As far as it happening again, I would be tough to overcome the 14th Amendment. Not counting every person as a whole person affects representation in congress. It could very well be considered a due process violation. It would be fought tooth and nail.

Dan, I mentioned marriage because that is the issue du juor…I don’t think it’s the most obvious example of gay oppression or needs to be our most pressing concern. I offered it as an example of government-sponsored discrimination, not to say that it was the same as any other oppression.

When your family disowns, when you’re Walking While Gay in West End and feel a fist hit the back of your head, maybe then you will truly appreciate the depths of gay oppression.

I appreciate your dialogue, and I hope nothing I said pushed you further away. Thank you

It’s funny because people (especially men) tell me I am emotionless & cold. I don’t see it that way. I just do not do relationships or emotional connection.

I’m not offended by anything either of you have stated, I love a good debate.

My point is that when you or I would (in the future) encounter someone that would ignorantly cite rote boilerplate phrases, that each of us would have some experience of the other’s perspective.

To be able to articulate a viewpoint or ideology cogently is a wonderful gift. It offers a glimpse of another’s perspective in life and helps with your own.

That’s all I mean to do here, and I thank you both for being honest and open about your beliefs.

@blah not only are you bright but wrong. I have yet to post anything in all caps. I spoke my peace plain and to the point. You just happen to not like to be called out on your whining (sorry but gay or straight) I can’t stand a man who whines. And for most of the day you have been on whinny overload. That is not engaging in debate that is crying victim.

You didn’t come to this blog topic to enlighten the hetero masses about the struggle of gay people. You didn’t log into this topic to share your vast knowledge of the “gay culture” with those of us who think are the unwashed masses. If anything even when you had people insupport of you like “M” you found away to turn what she had to say around..tell her how the old queens knew nothing about the new gay lifestyle. No my brother you are the classic..I am a victim feel sorry for me dude. None of my comments(and maybe you can re-read them when you feel less like Dorothy) had anything negative to say about gay folks. You have just been so caught up in having to defend your shyt for so long you think everyone is out to attack you(Classic victim mentatlity) I only hit you with hot facts when you grew a pair and decided to lump black folks in with gay people..like we are in some parallel struggle. Not happen bro.

Now you back to the victim role. Save that drama..I call bs when I see bs and you have been selling it in spades in this piece today.

Yeah, Poppa, but Patriot Act, Rendition, etc. illustrates how easily the Republicans circumvented the Constitution. Nobody even has the guts to prosecute them on account of it.

Dan, you’re mistaken about the nature of the 3/5’s Compromise, but I know better than to try to convince you.

Blah, more than 12,000 servicemen and women have been discharged for homosexuality since “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” went into effect in 1993. It’s their own fault. Just like any item involved in military enlistment, people are protected no longer by the Constitution, but rather by the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Rules are rules for military personnel, and if they can’t abide by them, then it’s a poor reflection upon themselves. Period. As a veteran, I submit that homosexuality has absolutely no place in the military.

Obama has stated that he intends to overturn and end “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”. It might happen in 2010, maybe later. Meanwhile, his Administration is backing it in the courts.

@W8 – “One is a choice one is not” – I would highly disagree! I think you are partially correct here. There are cases as noted by M earlier that there are some people claiming to be gay due to some abuse and have “decided” to live a gay life style. I’ve known I was gay since I was 4. Where’s the choice in that? Or would you suggest I go with mainstream america and pretend to be something I’m not – just curious.

@W8 – I was just trying to get clarification regarding your comment of it being a choice or not. I guess since you’re not objective enough, I won’t go on with it.

What amazes me is that with America having the status of World Power that there’s a lot of ignorance still in existence. And yet while living abroad it was more accepting for women to walk down the street holding hands and kissing. How hypocritical are we really in America. Contrary to popular belief – America is only partially the home of the free but is the home of the brave. In America, you can be free to be who you are and do what you want but there is a price you will have to pay to do that. I’m outta here – time to go get some more culture.
