Flip the script

I suppose it was inevitable that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama would be come an iconic couple. A lot has been written about their date nights, affection towards one another in public, and the history of how they came to be.

It all brings a discussion about love, romance, and marriage, especially among African Americans that sheds some light on our attitudes. One particular article that has made its rounds on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites is from the Washington’s Post interactive site, The Root. It was entitled What Single Women Can Learn from Michelle.

Of course it doused gasoline on an already hot fire of debate between men and women, which is always annoying fun and informative.  I actually thought the article made some excellent points. I just thought it would be vindictive fun and informative to flip the script a little:

What can single men learn from President Obama?

Do you think that we place too much blame on each other for the state of dating, marriage, and divorce?

Are we not all culpable when things don’t succeed?

Is it important for society to have a couple for us to believe in love and romance? Is it to give the children hope or are the grown ups clinging to the idea too?

*Note this is not an opportunity to bash First Lady Michelle Obama. Let’s keep things adult.

Summer ‘09 Soapbox Moment…
Sometimes reading y’all and listening in real life just confuses me. Humility is lost on far too many of us. If its necessary for you to tear another person down it’s an indicator that you find yourself to be lacking in some way. Time & time again, people just don’t have a clue about themselves…put so much stock in what others think about their physical that they allow it to eclipse (that word’s for you, Angie) their EFFED up mental. Re-evaluate and puch at least as much stock in your mental then you can set your own standards for how you allow yourself to be judged solely on the physical. Everybody’s gonna be sexy to somebody…just might not be you.

Cemeeli – go to http://www.790thezone.com and click on the Listen Live link. It’s not as good this week because Doug is on vacation.

Two brothers that started their own sportstalk show in their basement years ago. Now they are nationally syndicated. They also hosted the last season of Black Men Revealed on TVOne. I’ve been listening to their show since 2003/4 and was heated when I was in Houston and couldn’t listen (no streaming radio).

I agree entirely. I’d like to add:

When you are aware, knowledgeable and comfortable with yourself, others definition of you 1) do not matter; and 2) creates an unhealthy tension.

I started listening to them back when they were on at night. (Kinda like Dennis Scott is now).

I’ll never forget the show right after UGA’s 51-7 thumping of Georgia Tech. Ryan, who played for GA Tech during the 90s, was on air with Joe Hamilton blasting their alma mater’s heart. Ryan was so ticked.

I have a meaningful song for erry occassion and can usually think up a verse relative to whatever’s being discussed. Some I’ve felt that way and some I hope to one day. A few are Sarah McLachlan’s Arms of an Angel, Stevie’s Higher Ground, Patti’s My Love,Sweet Love, John Lennon(?) Imagine.

I sang that Jill Scott song at my girl’s wedding a few years back.

Staceye

My girlfriend practice, and practice ,and practice, and practiced that song so she could serenade to her husband during the wedding ceremony. And we all thought she was going to be way to sentimental to carry her voice (she’s a songbird) to sing to him during the ceremony.

GIRL! She tore Jill Scott to pieces!!?!? My mouf was tore up!

She told us she has a song for all our wedding ceremonies that she’d be honored to sing for us, that’s tucked away and she into surprising us during our weddings (but she wont tell anyone what songs shes choosen).

The girl is running a business, but her ministry is SINGING!

“Love Ballad” by L.T.D.

I have never been so much
in love
before
what a difference
a true love made in my life
so nice so right
lovin you gave me something new
that i’ve never felt
never dreamed of
somethings changed
though it’s not the
feeling i had before
oh, it’s much much more
love
i never knew that a touch
could mean
so much
what a difference
and when we walk hand in hand
i feel
so real
lovers come
and then lovers go
that’s what folks say
don’t they know
they’re not there
when you love me
hold me and say you care
and what we have is much more than they could see
