Flip the script

I suppose it was inevitable that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama would be come an iconic couple. A lot has been written about their date nights, affection towards one another in public, and the history of how they came to be.

It all brings a discussion about love, romance, and marriage, especially among African Americans that sheds some light on our attitudes. One particular article that has made its rounds on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites is from the Washington’s Post interactive site, The Root. It was entitled What Single Women Can Learn from Michelle.

Of course it doused gasoline on an already hot fire of debate between men and women, which is always annoying fun and informative.  I actually thought the article made some excellent points. I just thought it would be vindictive fun and informative to flip the script a little:

What can single men learn from President Obama?

Do you think that we place too much blame on each other for the state of dating, marriage, and divorce?

Are we not all culpable when things don’t succeed?

Is it important for society to have a couple for us to believe in love and romance? Is it to give the children hope or are the grown ups clinging to the idea too?

*Note this is not an opportunity to bash First Lady Michelle Obama. Let’s keep things adult.

I was a Clear member… good thing the job paid for my membership. How are they gonna send just an email saying that the program is over and nothing else? Some folks just renewed 3 year memberships. Cold blooded.

SexyCool and M’, I’m liking your words.

And that is one thing that is inspirational, common or not in this life. I’m glad they come across as not caring what others think. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter and many of us would be blessed to have what they apparently have.

Folks caught up in the pettiness of it all is funny. They both carry themselves as dimes.

As most well know, I am the poster child for the “IODTD” Campaign. (I Only Date Tall Dudes). However, last month, I went out with a ‘friend’ that I have flirted with for nearly ten years. He is an inch or so shorter than me.

I tell you – there was something about his ’swagger’ that night that was so sexy that, even with me in three inch heels, he did not seem short. He just seemed all man.

One of the things that I admire most about Michelle is the White House garden that she planted…I like how she involved the students in the project…and then is using this as a teaching tool to so many other things…gardening as an interest, horticulture, botany, culinary arts, healthy eating habits and nutrition awareness…there are so many positives about it and it is such a good value to instill in children…Michelle has a very holistic and disciplined approach to nurturing and supporting children in their development…and I think that will have a lasting impact too…she brings a different kind of warmth to the office of First Lady…and she is being effective without getting involved in policy in any public forum for the media to dissect…and that is good…b/c we know she has some very substantial and strong opinions, but her husband is the President and she is the First Lady.

Sometimes you have to give a shorty a chance tho. I’m not one for blocking my blessings. But the Lord knows my heart and fortunately, most short guys are not to be taken seriously or will have their insecurites about being short shine through, so I can stick with the tall ones.

Yes indeed…I also like the way she has interacted with several gov’t agencies in her role as First Lady…not to effect changes in policy, etc…but simply as a good faith liaison between gov’t employees and the White House…it is most def a class act of sisterhood, womanhood and self.

The First Lady is a classy woman. She can go toe to toe with any of the bigwigs in Wash. She has her own style and doesn’t really care what others think of her. She is a mother first, wife second (could be the other way around I really don’t have firsthand knowledge), First Lady next!

@Demi yes mike’s hard lemonade and virgin for others!

Poppa, I actually can’t say I hated Bush either, but I do resent an awful lot of what he did. He certainly violated the Constitution over and over, North American Union summits alone are a gross violation. Cheney made like he was a 4th branch of government. The damage caused is extreme and the effects long-lasting, I think everyone’s aware of it.

Now, I’ll say it again: nobody blames Obama for the financial collapse. However, sooner or later, he has to be held accountable for actions taken under his watch in the interest of recovery. So far, that vision is less than pleasing. It’s costing him popularity and if it keeps up (and it’s going to keep up) it’ll start to cost him public support, just the same as every other President that’s ever been.

Frankly, I think 6 months is long enough for something positive to have happened. Can anyone name even one positive result, specific or non-specific to campaign promises made?

Rell I know I am late with this response but…

I don’t know about all other men but one thing I do know for sho is, no matter how pretty he thinks my face is it cannot hide the sight of an dirty, nasty house. No matter how seductively I whisper his name, a good conversation will hold his attention for longer than 15 minutes. No matter how hot the loving is I put on him the night before he still wants his 3 eggs and bacon the next morning. And no matter how sexy my hips sway before him, draining his bank account to clothes these hips will get me dismissed.

I never listen to hip hop. I’m about 50% Jazz, 25% Classical, the rest a mix of various stuff, world music. Hip hop just aggravates me, I can understand the appeal of it, but its appeal is not musical.

Sorry to start my brief departure from lurkdom with a political comment, but any comments in here criticizing our President after 6 months of work are absolutely silly, and it shows that you clearly have lots to learn from President Obama.

The “microwave”, “just-add-water”, “instant gratification”, “flip-this-house”, “pimp-my-ride”, “Flavor of Love”, “Bling-bling”, “Move b%#@h, get out the way”, society we live in has ruined a generation of people by showing everyone that you don’t have to do much to make a lot of money. Hard work is just too hard. We all need to get off our lazy @$$es do some work for a change instead of expecting someone else to do it for you, and then complain when it’s not coming fast enough.

As for what our President has taught me, I must go back to the fifth grade when my teacher told me that one day I would be President of the United States. Being a kid growing up in the SWATS and going to school in Buckhead, I simply laughed at her because at that young age I thought that I would never live to see the day when a African American man would be in the White House and not serving the President his dinner.

President Obama has shattered that thought for me, and now when I tell my child (when he or she is born) that they can be President, I can say it with confidence.

I see that success doesn’t have to come via the NBA, NFL, or rapping on stage with a mouthful of platinum and your pants sitting in position for you to be gang banged by the prison population.

I see that the skinny guy in the khakis and button up shirt can and will continue to pull the most beautiful woman in the room (I did and we just got married a month ago today) – and that I can succeed and be confident and still be African American, regardless of what my peers think or say around me.

On the relationship level, Barack and Michelle represent something that Cliff and Claire Huxtable started for some of us, but was not built upon once the show went off the air. Being romantic does not have to be emasculating for men. Loving your wife or girlfriend is not a sign of weakness – and anyone who thinks it is afraid to be perceived as being weak themselves.

…returns to his corner to lurk some more…
