Flip the script

I suppose it was inevitable that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama would be come an iconic couple. A lot has been written about their date nights, affection towards one another in public, and the history of how they came to be.

It all brings a discussion about love, romance, and marriage, especially among African Americans that sheds some light on our attitudes. One particular article that has made its rounds on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites is from the Washington’s Post interactive site, The Root. It was entitled What Single Women Can Learn from Michelle.

Of course it doused gasoline on an already hot fire of debate between men and women, which is always annoying fun and informative.  I actually thought the article made some excellent points. I just thought it would be vindictive fun and informative to flip the script a little:

What can single men learn from President Obama?

Do you think that we place too much blame on each other for the state of dating, marriage, and divorce?

Are we not all culpable when things don’t succeed?

Is it important for society to have a couple for us to believe in love and romance? Is it to give the children hope or are the grown ups clinging to the idea too?

*Note this is not an opportunity to bash First Lady Michelle Obama. Let’s keep things adult.

Of course, he is a politician. Contrary to popular belief he doesn’t walk on water. He is a human. Humans are imperfect. People that thought that he would just walk into town and say that its my way or no way, have unrealistic expectations. He has only been in office for 1/8 of a term.

He has had to reconcile what was left for him by the past administration (every president has had to do this) with what the Constitution. I feel that Dubya did something that were darn near in violation of the US Constitution. Heck, Cheney thought that he was in both the Executive and Legislative branches which is totally untrue. I hoped that he was kidding, but he may not have.

In general, the President has a job that is a darned if you do or darned if you don’t. There will always be someone upset with what you do. I didn’t hate Bush. He did the job the way that he felt was right, even if i didn’t agree. It is all a role of the dice.

Melo, I didn’t say anything about deficit

yes u did,indirectly when u say this:

Our national debt is increasing by several trillion in a New York minute while absolutely no effect is detectable

national debt increases coz we borrow to fund the budget deficit.Thats what most govts do,including this one.The foreign bonds etc on US books are because US didnt not have money to fund her projects so debt increases coz we have a budget deficit. The budget deficit is up coz the tax base has dried due to the recession. The recession coz fewer companies are operating or have trimmed profits so corporate taxes do down and personal taxes go down coz fewer pple in emplotyement(all this stuff is related)

(im assuming a lot of pple(inc u abc) talk crap, coz the talk show guys spew so much vernom and not coz they understand what they talking about)

And the ignorance goes on!!!

If I recall correctly…Barack was almost immediately attracted to Michelle from first sight…and she was the one who was a little hesitant about him…he needed to “prove” himself, so to speak…so why would she need to “grow” on him?????…as some person mentioned earlier????

i personally think SHELLY is pretty. her cheek bones and her smile are great features that many would die for. but most men don’t think she is attractive.

the way i figure it is that OBAMA looked at SHELLY the way i looked at my ex. (yea, i know . . . him again. deal wit it!) he saw an intelligent, soft, driven, well spoken, family oriented, polite, classy lady who was heading his direction in life.

i can’t imagine what attracted OBAMA to SHELLY was her looks.

Raqi – You are so right. Looks will only take you so far!

Amounella – Be Funny. It’s funny you mention this, because I talked to a guy friend about this very thing last week. I mentioned my SO is a lawyer. He just broke up with a lady lawyer from a top firm. He said she was smart, beautiful, loyal, etc – but boring as all get out! He asked if my SO, being a lawyer, was boring also. I told him being a lawyer had nothing to do with it. Ole girl was just dull. It was the person, not their profession. Yeah sometimes folks who are ’bout something can be a little uptight or take themselves too seriously. Me & SO CLOWN! I LOVE Martin reruns and quote Martin and Sha Nay Nay and mimic them from time to time. We have the same twisted sense of humor. We almost never talk about work. Leave that ish at the office!

abc

The contraction in GDP began in the 2nd quarter of 2008. The real recession (meaning prices of daily goods and services) started much earlier in the 4th quarter of 2007. Economic indicators such as the GDP lag in calculation data, but the effects are felt well before those calculations are even made.

The overarching point is, Obama didn’t cause the recession, and despite his campaign promises, the economy may never recover. Gone is the debt financing of the last 20+ years – which “created” the growth of the economy until 2008.

Having recently discussed this matter with several economists (from both political prospectives) the only solution anyone could think of is to increase output. That would mean revitalizing a defunct manufacturing industry, and for Republicans, at a lower cost of funds to employees.

So the problem is not only economic, but the political “spin” vs reality of what it would take to decrease the American trade deficits and generate enough output to revitalize the economy.

And that, my friend is not a one man job – regardless of who the President is.

@abc: 6 months, yo. i see some folks are h3ll-bent on holding BHO to a ridiculous standard. i don’t think the economy picked up within 6 months of clinton’s first term, and what BHO is dealing with A LOT WORSE. in a year or two, if we’re still in this situation (sadly, that’s not unlikely), we can bash BHO all we want to and call those laws ineffective. but until then, STFU.

I finally read the article. The overwhelming thing that stuck out to me is that the article seems to imply that we get caught up in the trivialities about a person that block any chance of getting close enough to a person to determine if there is chemistry.

Because, what I see when I look at the Obamas or see any other couple together that appears to be successful in making the relationship work is their chemistry.

And THAT is what I believe attracted them to each other – their chemistry and the energy that manifests as a result of it. Couples like this are simply electrifying.

Good afternoon, from what I’ve been reading since the Obama’s stepped into preidential pathway was how unattractive Michelle O is, I guess most can agree that she’s not attractive to many, but there are a slew of atrractive/beautiful divorced and single people out there, beauty should not determine a marriage.

@SC

That’s exactly the point, chemistry.

If two people get along and neither is the other’s “type” why does it matter? I’ve been battling that within myself lately.

There are far too many obstacles in dating, and we continue to add to that confusion as a delay to potential happiness. It’s sad really.

Amen…M’ now putting money in the collection plate

That is so very true…certain intangible elements are interacting within their attraction to each other…and that seems to be the perceptible energy that has so many ppl awestruck, amazed, aware, admiring…what they see and sense happening with BO and Michelle…whenever the two of them are together and looking into each others eyes…it is still total captivation and affection between them…and that is a good thing…and not really all that uncommon…but rather just not commonly known or seen.

When it is all said and done, the Obamas will have left a lasting and memorable impression on the history of the White House and it’s occupants…I think that their code names say it all.
