Flip the script

I suppose it was inevitable that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama would be come an iconic couple. A lot has been written about their date nights, affection towards one another in public, and the history of how they came to be.

It all brings a discussion about love, romance, and marriage, especially among African Americans that sheds some light on our attitudes. One particular article that has made its rounds on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites is from the Washington’s Post interactive site, The Root. It was entitled What Single Women Can Learn from Michelle.

Of course it doused gasoline on an already hot fire of debate between men and women, which is always annoying fun and informative.  I actually thought the article made some excellent points. I just thought it would be vindictive fun and informative to flip the script a little:

What can single men learn from President Obama?

Do you think that we place too much blame on each other for the state of dating, marriage, and divorce?

Are we not all culpable when things don’t succeed?

Is it important for society to have a couple for us to believe in love and romance? Is it to give the children hope or are the grown ups clinging to the idea too?

*Note this is not an opportunity to bash First Lady Michelle Obama. Let’s keep things adult.

What I find so interesting is that the Obamas are not the only black couple that I know to be like this

So right!!
They just happen to be the 1st black Prez cpple, highly educated at that,no wonder the gushery!(wrd??)
Like Rell notes,Michelle is plain jane 4 shure, wld not make it in a buckehead alone model contest(if we talk about beauty and fab alone, which the swiss press gush at) but for what Obama has achieved and maybe coz of her Yale education.
Wait and hope that he fails(i mean abc like haters! ),they flip the script and will poke in evry nuke to seek flaws, daaaaaamn!!, even those Michelle teeth will be in the microscope!

Morning Gang!

Poppa – There is an article in the ajc about Janet & Shorty Doo Wop. They have her age listed as 36 though, when she is about 42.

abc – You sound like Bill Maher, in fact your little rant sounds like his verbatim. At least be original.Yeah, folks want an overnight fix and you don’t want him on tv every night(like he has control over that) yet he needs to be transparent. Okay, off the politics!

What I SEE that all men can take from the President is his obvious respect for women, not just his wife. He’s a perfect gentleman. I noticed on inauguration day, when the limo pulled up to the White House he got out and went around to the other side to help his wife out of the car. He held Nancy Reagan’s arm when she recently visited. Good manners are cool again. No we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, but all signs look good. Yes, they do seem to be more openly affectionate that the other prez couples. Nothing has come out yet about any infidelity or boozing so it seems to be genuine. Some things just are not that easy to fake all the time.

And forget what you might think of their politics or them personally, but yes, being AA, AA’s are going to look to them and relate better than past prez. Melo, you really think the brothers looked at Bush or any past prez as examples on ANYTHING? Come on now!

Good morning everyone!

Say it ain’t so about Jill Scott. Surprised to hear about Janet Jackson and her troll, I mean SO of so many years.

Hello Dan and C tha 1. Good to read you.

It’s not “what” can we learn from The Obamas. We all want what they have, a loving, nuturing, respectful union. The problem lies in whether we are willing to go the distance, through the peaks and valleys to reach that mountain top. Many of us today do not have the patience or the fortitude to travel the distance. One thorn prick and ppl put on their running shoes. Sure, it’s about balance. It’s about willing to sacrifice and stay the course through the sunshine and the blizzards.

@ARed, how do you “scratch” out words?

Yes, I have seen many examples of beautiful AA couples & families growing up. That’s why I still have faith in love & marriage. But if I depended on the American media or Hollywood to show me …well, you know how that would work. We all know the images they put out there of our men, they are on the news every day. And loving, successful AA couples are practically non-existent. Unlike the Cosby’s, the Obamas are real and something Hollywood did not have to make up & they can’t hide them from us.

Good Morning All,

Can I just be the cynic and say..what you see on tv is not always reality. I mean everyone talks about they have a date night and they say they do this..and do that. And really if that is what gets America going then more power to you. But err..I find something a bit more real about Elizabeth Edwards situation with John than I do the black version of Camelot. Not taking anything away from the Obamas. But Elizabeth Edwards has survived cancer what twice? and now the scandal that went on with hubby. If ever I felt someone was keeping it real it is that lady. I mean she didn’t do a duck and shuffle she was pretty real with her emotions and I like that. It is great to be shiny but hell I think it is the occasional tarnish(that you let show through) that gives you character. IMHO.

As for the break of beauty and the beast..I am sort of not surprised. Hell I am shocked it lasted this long(I always felt like they were in some kind of Dom-Submissive relationship and she beat him with a whip.)

Sorry to hear about Jill Scott that was fast..new man, new baby..no man..still new baby. Maybe they will straighten out.

Michelle aint all that. She wears an “A” cup and her hips are to wide. If ya have noticed then take off the blinders. Michelle is semi-attractive but model category…NOPE.

PS…you can thank Carter and Clinton for the “Urban Redevelopment Act” for the current mess. See its really simple math and Bush just so happened to be in office when it hit the fan…could very well have been a democrat. Add to that the fact that your boy Clinton expanded the act and refused to allow any regulation of the bottomless pits, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Um, let’s not start that debate about the debt…..

About the microwave issue, the need for expendiency in everything in our lives (computers, ATMs, food, politics) has definitely bled over into our relationships to “gotta have it now” mentality, which is a problem. Like a good gumbo, slow simmering romance has it’s place – forget a 30 minute meal/relationship.

Exactly, this is a dating blog, yet the topic is the Obamas. This is descriptive of Obama’s tenure so far: relationship model. Is that not a bit lightweight? I could do without a relationship model, and go with an effective President instead.

Nobody expects things to be ‘fixed’ in 6 months, but nobody likes to see things get worse, with badly defined or undefined plans of action, only huge amounts of money getting earmarked for general causes. People voted for Obama because of the things he promised: CHANGE you can believe in, transparency in government, no more back-room deals and secrecy from the White House. I’m not seeing much change. Obama’s popularity polls indicate that a lot of other people aren’t seeing much change, either.

I’ve never watched Bill Maher. Frankly, I’m not much for watching TV at all. What I see of the talking heads is mostly BS. Television ‘news’ is completely bogus, not news at all, but some yoyo’s opinion — like, who cares about some blondie’s opinion on CNN? Or Bill Maher’s opinion?? I thought he was a comedian.

Right, Rell, my point exactly. Men (and women) are made to feel like the only people who are worth of anything are those who look like the images on tv, especially the women. So, when they see someone like Michelle O., for example, then she is labeled as plain or even ugly, or as someone mentioned earlier, “not all that”. This is really disturing considering the majority of the women we see in images in the media are fake! People were even in an uproar when it was “discovered” that, dare I say it…Kim Kardashian has cellulite on her legs!! I mean, come on. You that girl looks like that before she sews in her weave, glues or her fake eye lashes, sprays on her fake bake tan, pushes up her breast implants, and throws on a pair of Spanx to “pull it all together”? Come on now.

If you are looking at relationship tips from the first family I feel sorry for you, hopefully there is something a little closer to home, or in your own family hierarchy, that you are more intimate and personal with as an example.

Michelle may not be the best on the eyes, but that lady is Certified SEXY!!!!

I remember watching an Oprah show with the cast from the Cosby Show…and Oprah commented on how seeing the affection that Cliff displayed towards Claire to be an unprecedented show of affection between a black couple, especially a man towards his wife…and I also remember thinking, wow…really, the Cosby Show was like the first time you saw something like that…wow.

I think that it is a very good thing that the First Couple have such a positive, strong and solid marriage with wonderful family values…it is a good thing for ppl to be able to experience a strong nuclear family…which seems to have been lost right behind the horse and buggy to car evolution…lol…but what I like most about them is that they have stayed true to their down to earth roots…still Southside homegirl…SOLID…plain SOLID.

And no, neither of them are the finest ppl in creation, but they are by far not the worst looking ppl or couple either…they are both attractive, personable, ethical, educated, hard working individuals…the essence of their personalities conveys far more attractive attributes than just physical appearance alone…Michelle is beautiful…she is warm, compassionate, sincere, genuine…and Barack is much the same too…what we have now in the WH is exemplary of what most Americans value and believe in…the American Dream…not just in the WH but before, during and after.

If i see somebody with good qualities that i admire or wld want my kids to emulate, i show them the person and tell them about her/him,white or black.
The girls follow Miley and Hanna(white and black) and they dont shy away for example coz Miley is white.Same if it were an adult figure with impressive credentials and a riverting story to tell.Is it because,me,the daddy and the mum are better informed and we not on the black, blah blah coo-aid?

Here’s the my problem with blaming Obama, like blaming Bush, Clinton, or Reagan. The President only signs legislation, he doesn’t create it. So if you have a problem with the way the government is run, quit re-electing the same Senators and Representatives – or run yourself.

As far as the politics (the debt, the economy, etc.) of his administration, 6 months is not enough time to judge anyone’s performance on a shrinking multi-Trillion dollar economy.
