I suppose it was inevitable that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama would be come an iconic couple. A lot has been written about their date nights, affection towards one another in public, and the history of how they came to be.
It all brings a discussion about love, romance, and marriage, especially among African Americans that sheds some light on our attitudes. One particular article that has made its rounds on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites is from the Washington’s Post interactive site, The Root. It was entitled What Single Women Can Learn from Michelle.
Of course it doused gasoline on an already hot fire of debate between men and women, which is always annoying fun and informative. I actually thought the article made some excellent points. I just thought it would be vindictive fun and informative to flip the script a little:
What can single men learn from President Obama?
Do you think that we place too much blame on each other for the state of dating, marriage, and divorce?
Are we not all culpable when things don’t succeed?
Is it important for society to have a couple for us to believe in love and romance? Is it to give the children hope or are the grown ups clinging to the idea too?
*Note this is not an opportunity to bash First Lady Michelle Obama. Let’s keep things adult.

AmRed – that song was released in like 1996 or something like that and it’s been on my wedding song list ever since.
Tazzee – That’s how I feel about Luther’s Here and Now. I heard it when I was 11 and knew that would be my wedding song. Everyone *groans* and says it’s overused, but I have never been to a wedding where someone used it…
Until my sister got married last summer.
Turns out, the resort where she got married only had two wedding songs she recognized so she picked that one.

AmRed – We ‘rewrote’ the lyrics to Here and Now as our pledge song so you were 11 when I was online? I’m old, LOL! I sang that in my friends wedding back in 2000 but that’s messed up that your sister took it from you.
The first time I heard You by Jesse Powell I decided that I wanted to have my first dance to that song. Still stand by that one (no wedding but plan to have a reception/party)

Ohhh man, you all are bringing up some songs that I had forgotten about…
Oh, and I love Phil Collins…almost anything by him —-> Groovy Kind of Love is still my jam.
Oh and I liked a bit of Red Hot Chili Peppers, specifically City of Angels
And I don’t ever wanna feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
And I don’t ever wanna feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way yea yea ye-yea
Oh no no no
Yea ye-yea
Love me I say yea ye-yea

Marvin Gaye Sexual Healing
I am more of a fan of Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up” than “Sexual Healing”
I used to go out to parties
And stand around
‘Cause I was too nervous
To really get down
And my body yearned to be free
So I got up on the floor and found
Someone to choose me
No more standin’ along the side walls
Now I’ve got myself together, baby
And I’m havin’ a ball
Long as you prove it
There’s always a chance
Somebody watches
I’m gonna make romance
With your body, ooo baby, you dance all night
Get down and prove it, feel all right

Cemeeli – I didn’t really WAKE UP to Sade til Lover Rock, to be quite honest. But I think her songs take on a new meaning once you really know what “in love” is.
Ironically though, one of my favorite songs by her is “King of Sorrow” and that’s about pain.

Sade has many songs about pain.
However, I understand. I have a friend that love Meshell Ndegeocello’s “Bitter”. She played that song so much after one of her break ups that I stopped listening to Meshell.

Not a heavyweight but I go twelve rounds
With a jab and a stick I’m goin’ lick for lick so
Give me the helmet I’ll be the stunt man.
Just relax, and I won’t front.
Like Anita, I’m givin’ you the best that I’ve got,
And I’ll be takin’ it slow, never missin’ a spot
Yes, caressing your back we’re chest to chest she’s kissing on my
freckles.
I nibbled around your ears before I suck upon your neck.
‘Oh Money B,’ yeah, that’s what you’ll be screamin’ and creamin’
But it’s not a wet dream, it’s the real
The freaky dog, dark nasty, never lettin’ a kitty-cat get past me,
Without picking it up, pettin’ it, teasin’ it,
Takin’ it on home and pleasin’ it
Cause we’re the freaks of the industry

On the topic of overplayed songs at weddings:
I asked my wife NOT to play Ribbon In The Sky at the church or at the reception. I’ve heard that song at darn near every wedding. I wanted to break the cycle.
She agreed and replaced it in the song list (we gave the DJ a list of songs so that he wouldn’t play something inappropriate) with Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be”
