One of my guy friends said that he was growing tired of women asking him what he did for a living. He has a great job, exciting even, but he thinks that women stereotype men in his profession. I think a lot of single people inquire about what a person does for a living for a lot of good reasons. It doesn’t necessarily mean the person is asking to gauge wealth or lack of it.
Sometimes a person’s job/career actually makes them sexy and raises their stock on the singles market. It could be because there is some type of uniform involved. You know what they say about uniforms, right? Or maybe it’s the fact that their job is heroic or noble that makes it sexy.
In your opinion, what is the sexiest job or profession? How often do you get asked the “what do you do” question when you are mingling on the dating scene? Do you give vague answers if you get a weird vibe from someone?
Have you ever purposely misled someone to think you had a different job/career before? What were your reasons? What happened when they found out the truth?

good morning all!:) i have had someone give me false info about their job/career before. once i found out, i couldn’t stop wondering why did they lie….then i realized, it was because he didn’t have a job at all…lol. still, i don’t see the purpose of making up a fairytale. just say that you’re unemployed. it happens.

Ask me if I like what I’ve chosen as a profession. Ask me if I like what I do, if I’m passionate about it. But don’t ask “what do you do for a living?” <—that’s at the least unimaginative, at worst prying

Good morning folks.
On topic. Educators are hot. Something about them wanting to help in any way possible. I’ve dated a principle and a few teachers, including last gf, and they represented well so I’m giving the title hottest career to educators.
Least hot, strippers. Dont let them talk to you. They ruin the whole facade.

torero/matado! to me is a sexy profession, I love the customes they wear and standing up to the big beasty bull. Very masculine.
I’m asked that question all the time and vice versa. For me wanting to know what a person does for a living is second to wanting to know how long they’ve been single. People are either proud of their careers/job or they hate it and they will let you know it. Once upon a time it was where you worked to determine your wealth but now it’s what’s your occupation determines that, thanks to salarywizard.com!

I purposely avoid the “what do you do” question on early convos. First of all, a lot of folks don’t know the intent and get defensive. Secondly, folks seem to ask because they don’t have anything else to say and thirdly, I don’t like answering the question myself.
I work for a sports marketing firm and I get to attend of the most sought after sporting events around: the Final Four, bowl games, etc. Once I relay this information, the next question 99% of the time is if I can get them tickets….yeah, like no one else I know wants them or like I really am going to give them to your random azz.
So if I’m talking to someone who I know I don’t plan to be speaking with again, I might tell them I’m a bank teller so I don’t have to explain what I do. Saves time.

Good Morning All:
I like this topic! Personally I do not like someone asking me what I do unless the conversation flows in that direction. I do a lot as it relates to work; I am a senior level executive and an Adjunct Professor not to mention I have a small business so I do a lot! BTW, when I tell someone my career(s) even the watered down version I have seen guys recoil on me. Have I ever mislead someone about my career? Yep the watered down version “of what I do” sort of sounds like my assistant’s job duties and I am cool with using that technique when I see fit, again some guys cannot even handle my assistant’s job duties.
What careers do I find sexy? I usually just judge the person not the career; because I have met so many people that degree was in one discipline, but they work in a different field. Long story short I do not find a career sexy I find the drive in a person sexy.

Yep that was me. Father passed, new assignment at work so I don’t come up for air until later afternoon and some of the crass comments from the dudes when women are sharing irkes the heck out of me….can’t participate with constant disrespect. Oh and not to mention the cattiness that’s constantly bred from a certain blogger. Some days it’s okay for entertainment and a good laugh but on the constant? Irritating….but good to read you and others though:)

I think for me the point isn’t “what you do” as a job, but the backstory.
Like, did you try another career that was personally gratifying, but not financially sound? (tells me if the woman has a sense of adventure)
What led you to your current position? Are there any areas in the company that you’ve thought about exploring for career opportunities? Have you looked into the required qualifications? (tells me a lot about her ambition and drive).
I’m not having a conversation just to have it, I’m trying to get to know a person and assess their personal qualities to see if we’re compatible. So “what do you do” is a rote question for conversations sake; but catch me asking about how you started your career(s), then I’m showing an interest in the person.

GOOD MORNING BLOG FAM
I don’t have an issue telling someone what I do for a living BUT when I get asked that question it can serve as a barometer of sorts. On one hand if a person asks me what I do and I tell them I’m a microbiologist at the CDC I guage their reaction to that. Some will be surprised and some look at me like “wha”……what’s the CDC?. When I hear the latter that let’s me know maybe I should keep it moving.
Other times men recoil at my answer….as a matter of fact I was at a birthday party for a fellow co-worker and one of his out of town guests asked me the same question…when I told him what I did I asked him the same thing and he said he was an entrepreneur….I asked what type of business he ran and he confessed that he was actually laid off. I’m thinking “why lie” but oh well. Maybe he felt funny b/c just before that he shared with me that he had 4 kids and 3 baby moms…..go figure.

I mean, if you are a supervisor at McDonalds and you are able to provide for you and yours, I don’t see the problem. Now, most women might be concerned about where you would go from there, but as long as you have a plan, I don’t see why it’s a deal breaker or anything. It’s an honest profession, and McDonald’s certainly isn’t going anywhere.
Though if you feel insecure about it, so will the women you encounter.

@SCool I agree 100%. That is the main reason I look at the person instead of the career, because what you do does not define who you are and if it does the definition is short. Your career may be a component of who you are, but it should not be you.

Morning peeps.
I absolutely love the question. Sine I’ve had a recent career change to something that I’m great at and I love what I do I don’t mind at all! I hated my old job so I would give a superficial answer like just stating my job title, which didn’t really explained my job.

Sexiest proffession for a girl engineers of any sort. To hear a girl breaking it down how things work is so hot for me. The least attractive proffession of a girl is a lawyer, they scare the crap out of me and also a girl with just a JOB is a definate NO NO, wont care how hot she is. So, yeah, it matters in what she does for sure.

For some of us to put the “what do you do” question in proper perspective, you may have to set it up first.
