Cougar Duty

In an attempt at full disclosure (sort of) of my dating life, I have to confess that yours truly is dating a younger guy. He is a solid 9 years younger than I am! It started out pretty innocently because I had no idea just how young the guy was until our first date. He just looked my age and I was too distracted by his muscles to card him!

After polling my friends for their opinion (sometimes I live my life by committee), I received some interesting advice. It ranged from “give him a chance” to “why not play a little bit with him”, and not one person advised me against it.

An older woman and younger man relationship can bring it’s own unique set of dating issues. Not to mention how some folks think that younger men date older women because they have “Mommy issues”. What do you think? In your opinion what is the prognosis for such relationships?

Guys, have you ever dated an older woman? How much older was she? What attracted you to her? Do you have an age limit to how old you would date?

Ladies, am I completely insane for dating a 28 year old? Would you do it? How young would you go before it’s too creepy for your taste?

HAPPY FRIDAY!

WD – 28 is the magic number these days. I think the every dude I have met this year, less about 5, have been 28. Strange. Anyhoo, I’ve never been one to get caught up on age, but as of late, I find the guys in this age range to still be “playing” and since I’m done “playing” and want to be in a SERIOUS, functional, adult relationship – 28 is NOT where it’s at. I have a dude on the team now who is 25. He seems nice enough and hasn’t said anything stupid yet, but I don’t take him seriously. Oh, and I’m 32 by the way.

I can agree that age doesn’t/shouldn’t matter if you’re looking to date and have fun. But if you’re looking for a more serious relationship, then it is a factor. In my experiences anyway.

WD, you know what is see as a huge factor in these types of relationships? The kid thing. I don’t mind the younger man sometimes, but they all want to have kids one day and I don’t! I know you guys are just dating so maybe this hasn’t come up. I actually don’t even know your stance on this but… do you foresee that being a problem?

When I was growing up I would hear a lot of older folks say that girls mature (mentally) faster than boys. That statement is probably more true than not, however I have do believe that there is a span in life that they catch up. Sometimes that catch is forced as a result of the trials of life. Who knows? I personally just think it’s the way we girls are wired. We are born in relationship mode. LOL From the time we are 2 years old we are playing house, dressing up, some being motherly…just already an ingrained take charge mode. Boys? Not so much.

That to say, if he seems mature and level headed then why not. If he makes you happy then go for it. Happiness is all that counts. With almost a 10 year age difference there will probably be some disconnect in the way that you think and do things but I believe that all things are possible. Anything is possible if it’s what you want. Heck just being male and female brings about differences. Go for it.

My friend Lacy dates younger guys, but her motive most of the time is “jackrabbit”. No real relationship expectations.

On another note: We rented our other house to my husband’s cousin who was 23 at the time and dating an older woman. Lawd have merci that whole ordeal was a boat load of drama.

Guy Here,
Never dated a woman my own age. Always older or younger. If you are having fun, don’t mess it up with the age question. Ever noticed that puzzle pieces fit together because they are opposite ? I’ll guess you and your ‘date’ are just opposite enough to spark very interesting conversation.
Enjoy!!

Yes, age matters. If you dont believe me try to date 15 yrs old. Na, I get it but I think age matters to a certain age. 9 yrs age gab could be rediculous or it could be Ok depending on how old you are. So WiseDiva, how old are you

Good morning everyone!

Age definitely is just a number. If you guys are compatible, can converse on various levels, he respects and treats you like a woman and the sex is good (if you’ve gone there already), go for it. Life has some very interesting curves and a 9 year age difference shouldn’t be one of those curve balls you want to spend time analyzing if everything else seems to be in place!

If Mason was to die and I found myself on the dating scene again, I would not avoid the younger guy however I would try to avoid the ones that are needing to be babysat. While they may be fun to hang out with, but if when it comes to being responsible and knowing when to be serious he needs someone to hold his hand or guide him, then no can do.

A lot of time our level of maturity determines how we respond to and deal with problems. It’s ideal to be with someone than can offer support and help you thru a matter rather than creating them or making them worse.

@WISE

I agree with the other posters. It does depend on maturity. I have dated younger before. So, no, you’re not insane. You’re just being a woman who is exploring her options.

How young would be too creepy? Well, if he takes you to the mall food court for a date and he has to make sure he leaves before the 6PM mall curfew…that indeed is a problem. Or, if his momma drops him off at your house for a date and says “Take care of my son”. LMAO. J/K.

Good Morning…Great topic WiseDiva…and timely

I struggle with this situation at times. I don’t have a problem dating younger but how much younger is ok? I’m currently 31 and I’m being pursued by a 21-year-old. He’s supersexy and his conversation is engaging but he’s 21 :) Like someone stated, I desire a “SERIOUS, functional, adult relationship” and I’m don’t feel at 21 we’re on the same page. Maybe if I were 41 and he were 31 it would be a little different. I just don’t feel he’s lived enough yet…I mean, he’s just now legal…LOL

Wise – Go for it!! Enjoy it until you have reason not to. This happened to me twice in the last year. The first guy was 31 and the second was 28. Funny thing is, I ran into the 28 year old again about 2 months after I first met him (and blew off his calls/texts). Part of me wants to say ‘consider what you’re looking for in a relationship and see if he’s on the same path’ but what I really want to say is have fun!

There definitely seems to be a trend of sorts with the older woman and younger man…and much less of a stigma as well ablut it.

While I do not do any traditional “dating” as a rule…I have kicked it with some men who have been younger than myself…my last longstanding relationship was with someone who was 4 years younger than I was…and I had a brother here who was 13 years younger than me that seemed very much interested in a “relationship”…and in the VA the youngins make no bones about being attracted to older women…lol…shyte, I had to card some of them brothers…lol.

But what I have decided, at least for me, is that most younger men are looking for things in long term relationships that are not of interest to me…like ImaPeach said, some want kids…some have kids and my daughter is almost 26…so raising some else’s youngins ain’t on my radar…and I have also decided that there must be a cut off age, like no more than 10 years in age difference…I do not want to be competing with the young women in my daughter’s age group…just a matter of principal with me…but I also try to keep a realistic focus on the situation…meaning?…well, givne the number of men in my age group who need enhancement measures to sustain some pleasure…uh, the young cats do not

But, I say that if it is an interest that is mutually shared…go fot it…why not???

You know what NY2GA during the time when it seemed like every time you turned to the news another teacher was sexing one of her underage students a friend and I were talking about why and how these women get caught in that kind of situation. I have a 20 year old son and of all the times he has brought his friends to the house I have never looked at one of them as anything but a child. The same with my 14 year old now. Any guy that is less than 10 years older than my oldest son is too young for me to even look at or consider in a dating, romantic, sexual, intimate manner. That’s just creepy.

Well go head WiseDiva!

I don’t see anything wrong with “Cougar relationships” as long as you have the same goals. Most never married women in their mid to late 30s I know want to get married and have kids relatively quicky after entering a relationship. A lot of guys in their 20s have no desire to be married in the next year or two and start families.

As long as that obstacle is addressed, I don’t see the problem. Besides the sex drives should be similar!

I hear you Raqi. I made my comment to Wise in jest. However, we do see alot of cases where adult women (and men) are messing with younger folks. I may be dating myself, but do you remember that movie The Graduate…when he seduced by Mrs. Robinson? That’s the cougar phenomenon in a nutshell. It’s just that some modern day cougars take it too far. Those are the ones that don’t need to be dating, they should be in jail for messing with kids.

It’s a beautiful morning, and hello to all.

From the time I was 20 I always dated older guys, but recently I was in a relationship for a 1 ½ with a gentleman that was four years my junior. The relationship started out fun, but in the end it was not the age thing that made the relationship tumble, but there were a lot of things I feel age related that contributed to the cause.

WD- I say go with what you feel.

Tazzee…thanks for the code and I do have my tickets for 06.25.2009. Now it is time to find something to wear.

That is why I put a cut off age range into place…with the guy that was 13 years younger than me…all I could think about was that he was in kindergarten when I was graduating high school, 10 years old when I moved to the ATL at 23 and 17 years old, graduating high school when I was 30…and I could never quite comfortably wrap my had around that…so hence, age cut off became a real consideration…I am more comfortable with 10 or fewer years in age difference…lol

i took the age thing out of my rule book recently. i was tellin’ myself that dating a man under 36 yrs old was a no no. i realized that i could be missing out on some great guys.

my co-worker went on a dating website and of course i made sure to put my .02 in the mix. i asked her to keep the age range as wide as possible. she frowned, but agreed. she later told me that it made a lot of sense, because she had more to choose from and most of the males she was interested in were either way older or a lil younger.

I thought was interesting b/c as he asked me to sign up for the Memeber Discount program and asked my son to “sample” some of the newest equipment in the store. I saw “THE LOOK” and i knew he was going for the kill once my son became occupied with the new toys. So long story short he asked if he could take me and the son out to a sporting event (can’t remember if basketball or football) and then onto Grand Prix…i thought it was sooo cute…awww…him was on his game with Cougar Hunting (hush Jamoca…:)

I’ve never really dated a woman older than me. When I was 18, I messed around a couple of times with a 25 year old chick, but that was about it. Now my brother-in-law could speak on this topic. He’s 23 and his wife is 35. They got married last August and now they are expecting their first child together. The age difference doesn’t seem to be a big deal for them at all. She’s just as goofy and silly as he is, yet she does keep him on the up and up. She’s also a good role model for his daughter from a previous relationship. Now if only we could figure out how to completely eliminate the daughter’s mother from the picture, life would be great. lol

Leggs I guess it all depends. The only woman that I know personally that married a much older man did so because she wanted a guy that was done with running the streets, partying and chasing skirts. She wanted a guy that is settled. They vacation and travel together and all that but the partying and all that is out.

And it could very well be because she is of childbearing age and wanted a good settled man to father her kids. They have three and he spends time with his kids as a family man would rather than hanging out allllll the time with his buddies.

It just depends on where you are in life I guess.

It’s really about ego. The person you’ve approached is telling you that you don’t have a shot with them, but that you might be a good fit for someone else. I find that a compliment in the midst of a “diss.” I might not like it at first, but realize it’s just a pride thing.

Might as well give it a shot.

The only thing I’d caution against is if the two friends hung out a lot. Cuz the guy may hit it off with your referral, but may still want a shot with you.

I found this out recently at the time her doctor told her although she was 43 she had the body of a woman in her late 20s to early 30s…her doctor was in complete awe. My mother is in her 60s now and she still looks good. My brother was heaven sent…there is a 17 year difference between him and my oldest sister…I am about 10 years older than him I would not trade him for the world.

I must say this; I do not understand how my mom dealt with the outside criticism. This was in 1985 and her sisters gave her hell saying she was just too old. It tickles me now when her sisters need his help since they were the main ones talking.

ow’s everybody?…hmph, I’m doing much better myself, now that it’s Friday! now spinning around in my chair Weeeeeeeeee Lol…yeah, right!

ON TOPIC: Can’t say that I’ve ever been interested in someone younger…since I can remember, I’ve always been into older men. At one point, I was seeing a much older fellow, who was just as vibrant and extremely active (indoors and outdoors…from yard work to the lair) and looked dayum good for his age (could have been all those roots and concoctions he’d brew and drink?! Lol

But…he was adamant about only dating younger women…but he was a charmer himself. However, I now find it a little funny that he’s really toning things down, when it comes to dating. He also divulged to me, that of all of the women he’s known…he could only trust me when it came down to personal matters, family/state of affairs…heyal, even on the financial end. And how he tends to the needs/wants of his home, his children (and their grown) and especially…his woman.
Like I said, we’ve known each other for awhile, so I’ve witnessed this to be true….but I believe that he’s just lonesome and being that he’s getting older, eventually he’ll have certain health issues that’ll need some “tending” to”…so he’s really seeking not only for that special someone, but that special someone that he can truly trust. And it’s funny that I said these words to him a long time ago, when I referred a few people to him (for auto body work)…when we called ourselves catching up on each other.

I thought for a minute that maybe at the time, he thought that maybe I was too young to take on anything more…well whatever the conclusion he came to, I was my “genuine self” ….and he could not really recall that character trait with anyone else he’d seen/been with in the past….talk about living like Anna Nicole!…IF that was my nature of course NOT!…(and don’t bother asking how old the man was).

Understandably, he could always hire help if need be (he tried that with me too…and told him upfront that whatever he was hoping for was not going to happen)….but I’m sure he’d rather have a loved one there to help him out when necessary, instead of paying a stranger (and boy, have I heard some stories)!

she was 43 she had the body of a woman in her late 20s to early 30s

Okay I have read statements like this numerous of times and especially on here. How does one accomplish that? How do you stop the aging of your body while your mind and heart just functions right along?

I am 41 and I have a 41 year old body. All of my close friends are within 1-2 years older and younger than I am and we all look pretty much the same physically. Will someone please tell me what product can I buy to preserve my body that it does not age another year.

(Disclaimer: That is Raqi being a snide b1tch.)

This is how I see it. Being healthy and fit has no age in adults. I try to eat right for the most part and I get in what form of exercise that I can. But I am 41 years old and so is my body. I love it, my husband loves it.

If all 25 years olds looked exactly the same. Were all shaped and cut the same then I would see how one could say that they are close to having a the “body” of a 25 year old.

Even the fittest most healthiest individual’s body is the age that it is.

As for “could actually be married right now. holdin’ out for the ONE could be a bad idea. whatcha think?” I think you should keep holding out for the right one…the last thing you want to do is marry the wrong one that would be an abomination I meant to yell on that ABOMINATION!

@ Raqi…as stated her doctor told her she had the body of someone in her late 20s or early 30s. I do not think her doctor was judging her by “club” standards I would think he was applying medical standards and backing his medical opinion by the fact that she did not have complications. Fast-forward she now in her 60s and she is doing well no medical problems and she is not on any maintenance medication e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol etc. Maybe it is genes because my doctor told me keep doing whatever it is that I am doing because my medical report is always excellent.

I think that their issue isn’t as much with the Lakers as it the NBA. The same goes for Orlando. Both teams seem that taken the commercials and hype as motivation. How many times does that Vitamin water commercial play that cuts back and forth between LA and Cleveland?

Neither Martin nor Anthony really even referenced the Lakers directly. They seem to say “Don’t overlook us”. I don’t think that they are saying that Lakers will lay down.

As for me, I just don’t think Phil Jackson is the coach that everyone bills him to be. He hasn’t built a team into a winner. He got teams AFTER they got their main pieces. He got the Bulls after Jordan. He got to the Lakers after Shaq and Kobe were there.

I give the players more of the credit than him. The triangle system that he uses was gonna revolutionize the NBA. However, he has seen that the system isn’t so good without a Air or some Diesel to fuel it.

Cee I’ve always liked dance offs, so you’d better start gettin’ your moves together…and in the words of Old Man Sam…. CHALLENNNNGE!

Oh and WD I guess that I never answered your question to the ladies….and that is: Of Course NOT. Why would your decision be considered insane? Now if you were to say that you wanted to marry (any) dude (no matter his age) after the first few dates??? Now that’s just insane.

But you’re only really getting to know the man, so try not to jump to conclusions about what will/won’t happen right now or even in the future…deciding to enter into any relationship is a gamble if you ask me, since none of us can foresee the future; so try not to pick it apart. Enjoy it for what it is right now and address whatever concerns/issues as they come/present themselves…or just through light discussion, unless there are already some concerns to raise your eyebrows about. Otherwise, you’ve already given the relationship a headstart onto a negative path.

Enjoy him and allow the man to enjoy you. You’ve both engaged the situation, let alone each other this far, so he must be somewhat mature enough to converse with…even to the point of considering an actual relationship. And I’m happy for you!…so gon’ head Stellah and letcha’ hair down.

There are tons of computer programs that you can get that can help, at least until you can get him some help.

I think that studies show that males have a harder time with English. (which make sense if we aren’t verbally stimulated) It definitely something that I had to really work on. I eventually got it, but only through repetition. My parents got me a spelling dictionary.

The funny thing is that numbers came naturally to me. Math was my thing. In college, I tutored people in Physics even though I didn’t have to take it. AP Calculus gave me college math credit while in high school. Geometric proofs were my specialty.

I have to say live your life. Do not base it on numbers financial, material and definately not in a relationship. If you are happy do not put more into it or think any less. My husband is a year younger than me however in my 20’s I was dating a 17 year old that I did not know was 17 until his 18th birthday because he had a fake id and I was new to ATL,however his maturity and ability to handle his business has far surpassed any relationship I have ever had period. My financial, mental, emotional and physical needs were totally fufilled he just got caught up with the wrong people and I left him and now he has to pay the consequences in a very unfortunate way. He really had a great future ahead of him. Remember live your life as it is whatever is happening is suppossed to and it will not be altered by no one but GOD.

Okay he just “clocks out” on his assigned/homework english/writing.

That’s it. Sounds like he probably just doesn’t like being told what or how to write. I had that issue some. I hated being told what to read. I hated some of the books that we were assigned in HS. I loved to read, but I hated reading assigned things. I refused to read The Diary of Anne Frank. To this day, I can’t stand any Charles Dickens after Oliver Twist. (Too descriptive…just get to some action.) . I wanted to read Stephen King not that.

You said that he is closing in on his teenage-dom. That is when my stubbornness kicked in. Sounds like he likes freestyle, but hates the restriction put on him by the rules.

I don’t have any problem dating my 14 year old girlfriend even though I’m 32. Her Mom is ok with the situation and is glad an experienced worldly man is taking care of her daughter.

When I was in my 20s in Sandy Springs, I used to looove to get caught by some cougars. When I was 23, I had a hot six-month affair with a 39-year-old whose husband had left her for a 23-year-old. I also had short-term relationships with a couple of women in their 40s, one in her 50s. They were all mega hot. Now I’m 46.

PoppaG You are his adult Lil Cee shadow! I’m serious. Cause what you said is JUST like him!!! it really is it in a nutshell.

Buuuuuuttttt…..the “rules” I pay for the RULES. Remember he’s in tuition base institution. So he has no other choice but to do alll that work. All of it.

It’s going to be a looonnnnnggg summer. But maybe not.
