That’s not my name

Today’s post is courtesy of “Brian”, a 29 year old man from Smyrna. Brian wanted to offer his perspective  after a recent experience he had with a young lady he was seeing:

I have been going out with someone for a couple of months. A couple of weeks ago, when we were in the heat of the moment, she said someone else’s name. I think it was her ex-boyfriend or something. I didn’t say anything about it at the time but it is making me question if they are still seeing each other. Even if they are not in contact, he is obviously in her thoughts. It was probably an honest mistake but it has never happened to me before.

Wow, Brian, that’s quite the conundrum! I can’t say that has happened to me before. I don’t think it has, anyway. Ladies, have you ever made this mistake? Did you own up to it or ignore it? Do you think Brian should bring it up even though it didn’t just happen? What would you do if you were with a guy and he called you another name by mistake?

Guys, how would you handle it? Have you ever used the wrong name with someone you were seeing? What happened? Did the lady completely flip out about it?

Do you think it means anything when someone you are seeing brings up the name of their last significant other/partner? How many mentions are too many? Are you more understanding if the person was with their ex for a long time?

Happy Thursday

Good Morning All :)

WOW! LOL! Since they have been dating a couple of months, she may be still messing with her ex.. If not, she is DEFINITELY still thinking about him.. Poor Brian if he is emailing you asking for advice! He must REALLY like her if he is giving her the benefit of the doubt.. I never understood why people call peoples names while having sex.. If it were me, that would be an IMMEDIATE turn off!

Ladies, do you think Brian is worthy of submitting to?

My own Mom calls me by my uncle’s name, my half brother’s name, etc., it is some kind of nervous energy/confusion…might be something genetic because I find myself doing that some to (probably early Alzheimers). So it may be nothing, although never experienced it in the heat of the moment”.

What I have experienced (up close and personal) is where circumstances bring an old lover back around. It is frankly a bit painful when one sees in his/her partner’s eyes that there is still some feeling. The country musical group Alabama said it best in its song “Old Flame”. The reframe is:
“There’s an old flame burning in your eyes,
that tears can’t drown and makeup can’t disguise.
That old flame might not be stronger,
but its been burning longer,
than any spark I might have started in your eyes”.

Most of my relationships went downhill from then on…because there was obviously no total “closure”…and that flame was still smoldering inside them. Oh well, “Lifes a byiotch and then you die (or marry one)”.

Are you serious?! Unless I didn’t give a d@mn about this chick would I let this slide. C’mon this chick got to be in some sort of rotation or something! Based off your post I’m going to infer that you actually like this girl as you’ve been “seeing” this girl for a couple of months….AND SHE CALLS OUT ANOTHER DUDES NAME WHILE YOU’RE TRYING TO SCORE. Before I speak to quickly please explain your response to this blatant act of disrespect. Please tell me you’re not spending money, going out on lunch dates and such. WTF part of the game is that?! Maybe I’m overreacting, but I haven’t been this apalled reading this blog first thing in the morning in a loooonggg tiiiiime.

The most I have even talked about my exes is on here and that would be because to chime in with certain topics I will mention something that may have taken place in the past. But as for mentioning the names of the exes in the presence of my marido I only do so when while talking about their son.

The only time I have called a love interest somebody else’s name is with Randy. I mistakenly called him Mason. He didn’t say anything at the time but just sorta looked at me. It took me a minute to realize I had said the wrong name. LOL After that I guess he wasn’t surprised when I let him know that I was with Mason and that he and I could only be friends.

In Brian’s case and other’s like it, I would think it depends on how long it has been since the break-up from the ex and how into that person they were. Or it could very well be that she is still seeing him or wants to be with.

Morning all!

I’m surprised Brian didn’t say anything at that moment – but I guess he wanted to continue through to get his. This has never happened to me, but if it did it would be like the sound of a record screeching to a halt while everyone is on the dance floor – all action would stop IMMEDIATELY!!!

I have been called by an ex’s name but that was because she and I have the same first initial and it was the first time this guy and I ever got in an argument. He argued quite a bit with his ex. That took the argument to a whole ‘nother level.

I’ve never called a guy by an ex’s name but I have called him my best friend’s name in the midst of a discussion. That’s happened a few times before.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY QC!

who was she with at the time this mishap occured? please get over it and move on. it was a mistake.

i personally don’t like to be called sunshine, babe, baby, lil mama, beautiful, lady, woman, etc. i like when a man says my name Angie. it seems more personable.

when i caught my ex cheating and had the opportunity to speak with one of the other women, she mentioned that he called her babe. that bothered me a great deal. i feel he did it to not mix our names up. smart on his part though.

I was making love to her feet, and I said “—–” (her sister’s name) – totally by mistake; she spasmed and almost kicked my front teeth out!

“What did you just say!” I mean, she said like she wanted to take her bra off and strangle me with it.

cosign mytwocents …”We don’t know nearly enough bout that dude…”

I would hesitate to give advice when we only know a few sentences about the relationship. That said, from personal experience, I think my “antennae” would be rising and I might start looking for any “inconsistencies” in what she says and what she does. Too early to judge, but I would be watching more closely.

I think I’m going to have to agree with some of the other folks on the blog….even if she isn’t still seeing the ex, she’s definately thinking about him. Since it’s only been a couple of months and I always think that in the first few months of a relationship ‘others’ that were there prior to you may still be in the mix, stuff like this can be expected. You have to give a person time to clean up, get rid off the ‘others’. Does it suck?……yes. Could it have been a genuine slip up or mistake?…yes

If she continues to ’slip up’ or show signs that she is ‘creeping’ 6 months in then I think you have something to worry about. For now, I think you just play it by ear and see what her behavior dictates.

@Lioness….I’m sorry to sound cold, but after a couple of months which is roughly eight weeks. You are not getting ‘intimate’ with anyone…you are having sex! Sex and intimacy are two different things. I don’t think you can know a person enough in eight weeks to have ‘intamacy’. So therefore you are taking the ‘risk’ that everyone does when you are having sex with someone you really don’t know yet. So you make sure and consider the following:-

1. You protect yourself
2. You really don’t know if they are still sleeping with ‘others’ prior to you no matter what they say.
3. It’s just ’sex’ until you can trust that this person is committed to you and has invested in the relationship emotionally.

It is the way that it goes. Guys say that a lot. You either have droughts or monsoons.

I always make missteps when too many folks are wanting my attention. Then you pick the wrong one, then that goes south and the others don’t want anything to do with ya.

Even last night, I ran into this guy I had a chance meeting with like a year ago. I’m like what’s the odds of him coming out of the woodworks NOW?

On Topic: I have been on a date and on the phone and called out someone else name! It happens to a lot of people when we just meet someone and state dating them! This could be because we have just ended our previous relationship or we still remain friends with our former partner! No big deal!

So many people are making a big deal out of name slippage it does not mean you are thinking about your ex! Subconscious thoughts come out of nowhere all the time!

I would not even be upset if a woman called out her ex name while doing the nasty! She probably is use to his name and not my so that means I must be hitting that spot! Sooner or later she will call only my name!

I can understand how it may have been a bit of an ego blow to the young man. If it were to be addressed, he should have done so at the time it happened. The window of opportunity has been closed on that one. At this point, I say just let it lie it where it fell.

If I were to venture into deeper waters, I would guess that there are some other issues. The biggest of them being trust.

It’s happened to me a few times, and I’ve done it myself a few times. It doesn’t mean that I’m still seeing the ex, or that they are, or even that I’m thinking of them. It just pops out, kind of like a habit. If anything, it’s an indication that they’ve replaced the one whose name you spoke by mistake.

When it happens either to me or by me, the horrified look motivates me to poke fun at the situation, lighten the mood, and get over it, because chances are it doesn’t really mean anything.

Good morning everyone!

Yes, yes, yes, I’ve made the mistake twice (all in the same night). For some reason I can’t even explain, I blurted out another person’s name in the “moment.” He plucked me in the forehead saying “that’s not my name.” I apologized, but immediately said the other person’s name again. The evening was over after that. I can picture the entire evening to this day! It was good (up to that point)

Heeeyyy W8/Pecan Man(said while batting eyelashes)! What kind of suit are you wearing today? Yeah, I know I’m boood up AND still married to Truth, but I’m not blind!LOL!!

On topic- Has never happened to me. I have been in a situation where a guy was very much still into his ex. He had that look that Randy described earlier. It was a sinking feeling for me and I had to let him go. In Brian’s case it could be slip up, could mean she’s still caught up with ex, etc. He needs to do what feels right for Brian.

Like Amred and others, I have made the mistake of calling a guy “girl” when I get chatty and comfortable, but that’s from talking a lot to friends! It was very uncomfortable when I did it the first time though.

Taz – for you…no problem.

With pen in my hand
And no master plan
I am sitting here
Thinking of a rhyme.
Reminiscing about times
gone past and days that don’t last
and reliving memories
of a life lived too fast.

I’ve really slowed down.
No longer all over town.
I stay paper chasing.
Make sure life is not wasting.
And I keep my head to the sky.

Looking for life’s best.
Wanting low stress.
Standing the test.
Taking no mess.
Just living happiness day by day.

Heading the lessons I’ve learned.
Taking fewer wrong turns.
And wondering how life will turn out.
Because have no doubt,
No matter the route.
This journey one day will end.

If I can look back
On my closing act
Knowing I’ve lived my life to its limits.
With my promises kept
And no tears to be wept,
Then I knew I was in it to win it.

I’ll be sure and get you something on the 28th. I’m setting a reminder now. :-D

What are you and my sister doing for your anniversary?

I originally planned a day trip to NYC for a shopping spree. However, we spent most of that money back in January during Inauguration week for Balls and such. (She did plenty of shopping for that)

We had dinner at Oceanaire and went to Loca Luna last weekend for some latin dancing.

We are going on a cruise in August to the eastern Caribbean before the fall semester starts.

I will so far as to say calling someone else’s name would understandable if the person was in a longterm relationship with the prior. If you just spent the last 2 years with the same person that name is embedded in your psyche. Now only being 2 short months with the new one, you are bound at some time or the other to mistake the name. Especially if it happens during the first time you two are getting intimate…too soon. And I put the too soon on purpose.

@Raqi, I would be pissed if called the wrong name during the moment. Any other time wouldn’t bother me because I call people different names quite a bit. However, in the bedroom you “want to believe” that you’re the focal point down from the root of your hair to your polished toenail. I have always loved being tall. However, last week, at the Hawks game, I was looking around thinking, “Wow, if I were about 4 inches shorter, my potential dating pool would d@mn near double.”

There are a plethora of short dudes around.

Seriously, we do talk about it. Usually we talk it during the week between Christmas and New Years as we review our goals that we set in January and what we did to achieve them as well as what we want for the upcoming year.

As I’ve posted many times, when she gets on that “I want a baby, kick” , all it takes is one afternoon of babysitting our nieces (1 – 6 years old and 19 months old twins) and the baby desires seem to leave. It seems that we babysit most during that week.

My brother in law knows that he has babysitters that week. He usually plans to take his wife away from the kids. She is a stay at home mom and needs a break from Big Bird, Burt, and Ernie and needs to enjoy grown folk conversation.

Actually, she doesn’t really go that crazy on the sprees. She pretty domestic, too. So, she has gone to Hancock Fabrics in Buckhead, gotten fabric and made gowns.

Personally, I think its the NY” I gotta be different” in her. Chances are that if she makes it herself, there aren’t any dresses like hers.

She still buys the accessories, but being tiny, she gets a lot on clearance. There must not be many females that wear a size 5 shoe. Because that is where she really scores big.

Speaking of dumb or odd statement uttered while doing the deed…

Last night I was watching Jerry Seinfield and George was getting it on with his secretary. She put it on him so well he blurted out that she was getting a raise. Afterwards he not only regretted saying but he could not believe he said it. She got the raise and it was more than what George made.

Got me thinking of some stuff I have heard and said myself.

Anyone ever said something they later regretted. And no I will not accept the “I love you” because all you men folk are guilty of that lie.

Afternoon…

Yes, I can recall calling someone another man’s name…honest mistake on my part…and extremely frustrated since the argument was indeed about the “other guy” in the first place (which was not brought up by me…AT ALL). So it was more of an impulse and again, frustration that I blurted out “Lucas” instead of “Larry” being that my current was still bringing up “dude from the past” rather than getting over it, since neither of us could change it.

Now, I was informed by an ex, that one evening, while out on a date, he and the woman of interest came back to his place for a few drinks and whatnot…and while he excused himself for a few moments, leaving her in the living room for a few ticks, she called herself being nosey with his laptop.

Ol gurl must’ve ran her fingertips across the the little “mouse pad” just to find dun, dun, duuuunnnn = yours truly’s pic blown up as his screensaver (as well as the desktop). Needless to say, the night did not end as he had intended or heyal, may be it did. But let him tell it, she (naturally) took issue with that, especially since he refused to change it…which I found quite interesting as well. HA!

Yes Mo, she has never been to a concert. Her upbringing was quite sheltered at times due to her mom being quite religious(she’s loosened up quite a bit though). She was not allowed to listen to certain music, especially hip hop, so she doesn’t know much about old school rap. I remember being at a house party a while back and a Run DMC video was on the TV. She turns to me and says, “baby, who is that?”

*facepalm*

I told her she is now forbidden from asking music questions like that in public. LOL!!! Funny thing is, she knows the words to a lot of old school R&B songs, but she usually has no clue who the artist is. She’s a oddball at times. lmao

My2Cents, our schedules have been quite hectic over the last few months. I’ve been working a lot of weekends, and she goes to school full time and works part time. My weekends are gonna be freed up in June and July, so I’ll see if we can make up for lost time.

Melo, my wife isn’t a “church girl” per se. As I said, her mom isn’t nearly as strict as she used to be. I actually met her at House nightclub in the Underground. Honestly, church is a bigger part of her life than mine, and I’m sure she would prefer to go more often, but she’s damn sure not a holy roller.

Poppa, I met some air force chicks on a bus and they put me up for a week. Talk about connections, these chicks had it all set out. The one thing I’ll never forget is a restaraunt on the dock and the 5 course meal they served. It was delicious seafood straight from the ocean. If you can find it its down near the heel opposite Greece. I’d love to go there again too but London wouldnt be bad either. Alot of history in london. Didnt get to catch it when I was over there.

You know speaking of venice smelling like swewer, alot of the tourists spots are anti climactic. Mona Lisa was small as hell, i saw the largest rat ever recorded near the Eiffel Tower and alot of the old castles and whatnot needed major repairs. Still it was good to see how others live. The world is a beautiful place and you meet some great people.

@Kym, it’s very rare for me to say the word “boo”. About four years ago, this guy asked me what he meant to me. I told him he was my “good boo.” He said WTH does that mean. I told him he was a good friend of mine. He said never to say that again. So, perhaps there’s some merit to whatcha say about being too old to say certain things.

The thing about Chastain is, nobody really goes there to see and listen to the acts, they go there to see and be seen themselves. It’s so noisy, it can get difficult to even hear the concert. You can re-order high school yearbooks. Chances are, someone from your class has already digitized it and put it on a DVD. Check out some of the reunion sites like classmates.com, do some digging around.

Me, I don’t keep anything like that! No yearbooks, scrapbooks, photo albums, nothing. I travel light and I don’t see any reason to haul a bunch of memories around. Chances are, if I were to meet up with high school friends today, I’d wonder what ever made me become friends with them in the first place! Some things are better left in the past. Live for today, anyway. Look to the future, the past is already gone.

But there are a few childhood (elem school buddies) that I would not mind running into. Don’t do facebook, myspace, etc either, well…not for my own personal use. Lol However, I may search it for the heck of it or if I get “that call” from a relative/friend to check this fool out…other than that, I see it as another way for gov’t or folks in general to keep track of me somehow.

kimmie, I’m a little bit sentimental myself, actually. One reminisces about happy times in the past, and the time and distance elapsed makes it plain that it’s gone, it’s past, ain’t no goin back. That photo of a special person from the past, that home movie of your child when they were 4 and loved you for real, idolized you as their hero, Ah, Bittersweet! If only we could revisit that one happiest day, just for that day, just the afternoon, for an hour, even.

Rose colored glasses, I say. What we could get of value from those past experiences we still carry with us. Why carry around a bunch of memorabilia that only invokes the bittersweet mood? Even the happiest memories are bittersweet, because those times are gone.

Me & my buddy that came to visit last week had some good laughs about some classes though. We had a finance class together and had stayed up all night for the final and took No Doz for the first time. I felt like I was on speed – my hands were shaking as I took the exam. It seemed to have the reverse effect on her though. The exam was at 9 the next morning and she left my dorm at about 6 to go back to her room. 9, then 10 am passed and she had not shown up for the exam! Finally about 30 minutes before ending time she races in the classroom with her hair sticking up like she stuck her hand in a socket! The instructor was a ***hole and it took some convincing, but he let her take the exam and have the full 2 hours. We were cracking up about that though!

The funny thing is I have been in here reading for months…but I just started leaving comments.

Professor, that’s how I got into it too. I lurked for quite awhile. That’s why I’m aware that there are so many more people reading and paying attention to what we say then the ones who post.

So when the lurkers go off, I know they’ve usually been around for a while.

Staceye – I’m saying.

I accepted my Dad’s freind request, but I limit what he can see. He can’t see my partying photos or status updates. My parents were very vocal about “we are not your friends” when I was growing up, so they don’t get “friend” benefits.

Snippa – Not a class reunion?!!? Lol…but I can’t deny that’s kind of the way I saw it after awhile myself.

Raqi – Shoot, I remember a little boy that I went to school with. We grew up/knew each other since the 2nd grade. Cute boy, dk skinned, baby hair, and tall, but mean as the devil! A lot of the kids were afraid of him…he was somewhat intimidating…his face was reminiscent of a drill sgt!…he even used to force me to let him ride me on his handle bars after school as if he was “giving me a ride home” or something?!!! Lol…since he was pretty good friends with one of my male cousins. But that little boy (unfortunately) was the “school dough boy” of West Tampa Elem at least by 5th or 6th grade (which I was not surprised).

I was surprised that he never got caught…at least by school faculty/staff…but he had a dayum scroll for a record and has been spotted ocassionally, if he’s not doing time. smh…

I don’t do social networking sites and never will. I use them for surveillance at work, for whatever value they have in that regard. You might think you have control over who sees your wall, etc., but you don’t.

I’ve heard it said that reunions are obsolete due to social networking sites. What purpose does a reunion serve when everyone who’d show up has a Facebook page anyway? You already know what you’d want to know. Why go to the reunion?

Not to mention Facebook Addiction Disorder, an identified condition that’s more focused than General Internet Addiction Disorder. There are more than 155 sites dedicated to FAD on Facebook itself, and facebook.com publishes other information about detection, prevention and cureative measures for it, yet the thing is designed to suck people into checking their status and that of their ‘friends’ constantly.

Facebook is a social ill. Progress!
