Just wanted to let you know how much I love and enjoy your cartoons

thanks for reading them midori!
September 23rd, 20103:56 pm
Nice! The powers that be have at last decided it’s high time you face the music. I guess I’m not the only one routinely outraged by your blatantly one-sided take on current events. Yes, 75% pro-liberal, 10% pro-conservative, and 15% neutral does count as blatantly one-sided. I guess it’s tough to be fair when one views life through the prism of liberal propaganda.
Here’s my question: Would you please list the publication dates of the five most venomous doodles aimed at conservative politicians, public figures, or principles, as well as, the five most venomous doodles attacking liberal politicians, public figures, or principles. Thanks.
September 23rd, 20104:57 pm
I am somewhat conservative ………. if you have ever read a few of my posts on Bookman or Tucker. I have also sent you from time to time some ideas about a cartoon but alas I could never get you to bite. Is that because it’s against the rules or you just always want to use you own thoughts.
Just curious ……………..
By the way, do you know which two cartoons Oliphant once said got him in the most “trouble” ??
September 23rd, 20106:17 pm
Mike, I have loved your cartoons for years. 3 years ago I moved from GA to KS and have asked our local paper to carry you. So far no luck(ovitch…oops, sorry!). But I read your cartoons daily and share the ones I especially like on FB. Thank you for your eloquence, cleverness and unbelievable talent!!.

Please Clifford DePass make yourself aware before commenting….Bishop Eddie Long is not being tried in criminal court…this is a civil case….there is no “sentence” only punitive damages to be paid should he be found guilty….

I am STILL waiting on ANY WOMAN , to step up and say “he paid my rent , for a YEAR”, and told me to call him “Daddy”…….ANY WOMAN
September 28th, 20107:50 am
If the good pastor did what these you men have said; he for got a few things.
1.) When he took them across state lines, the law changes. Fed offense
2.) If he used church money, this mis-appropriation of funds for a tax exempt structures.
3.) If he using the church money for his get aways, then IRS
He might be better serve to pay the money. You get the government to digging your “affairs” (that was not intended to be a pun) and there no telling what they will find to hit you with.
The sick part of this thing is, if he was doing this thing, then others knew. Eddie does not go any where without his throne of body guards and hangers on. When we went to his church you could not get close to him!
September 28th, 20108:34 am
Eddie long may be guilty but don’t put all
Pastors in that category there are some
Pastors living and teaching right. Also
Teaching starts at home if more parents
Step up and teach and protect there children
A lot of this would not be.
September 28th, 20108:40 am
This is really something… Why is the news not looking more deeply into this.. What are these you men like.. Are they or were they good students. Did they have jobs? These are usually the criteria for young men who are in some type of mentoring program.. Especially if they are receiving gifts and cars and living expences.. If they were not doing these things and still getting benefits then we need to ask why…

How to Take a Licking & Keep on Ticking – There was another Black Man who took a licking. He took a licking for you and me. He was lied on, spit on and beaten. The crowd/mop shouted “kill him” and the Roman King crucified him on that old rugged cross. He took a licking. Three days later he “GOT UP” and the devil had to say “he took a licking BUT he is still ticking” today. I hope Pastor Eddie Long remembers the “Greatest Story Ever Told”. Pastor Eddie Long will “GET UP” and continue his faithful service to his Church and community. The young people and elderly need him more today than at anytime. Down here in ATL the deep, deep, deep south the devil is alive and he is spreading his lies all around town (tea party, conservatives, etc.). The ATL suburbs are filled with white people who want to “take back our country” and the white media is looking for any excuse to persecute black people especially black men unfairly. For example, just look at the unemployment numbers for black men in ATL (60%). Pastor Eddie Long GOD has “put you in the midst of your enemies” so they will know that GOD is in charge. Pastor Eddie Long you have to “keep on ticking” because GOD has work for you to do. We all fall short, BUT by the Grace of GOD we have another chance. That’s what I love about our JESUS.
September 28th, 20109:23 am
WWJD – THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE ARE SOME BODY TRING TO TAKE BACK COUNTRY . THIS HAS TO DO WITH EDDIE LONG PREYING UPON TEENAGERS ( CHILDREN) HE IS GAY AS A TWO DOLLAR BILL HE IS GUILTY !
September 28th, 20109:32 am
The whole situation is sad. We have to pray for the young men, as well as Bishop Long. The 25,000 members of New Birth will be severly affected by this tradgedy.
September 28th, 20109:41 am
RUN – My article is about the “Greatest Story Ever Told” which ALL Christians should be aware of, and the evil that is hurting our Country. The devil is alive and ATL is a battle ground. There is no proof that court filings are true by these 4 individuals. Just like there is no proof these 4 individuals are trying out the latest “get-rich-quick” scheme either . One thing is for sure the court of public opinion is not the place to resolve this matter. The truth.
September 28th, 20109:50 am
@ Ron, well put. I feel the same way-it’s sad for EVERYONE involved either way.
If it’s true, then it’s a tragedy for obvious reasons…a man whom others trusted as a man of God has not only abused his position among God’s people, but also violated God’s laws and what He has entrusted him with. And, the lives of these young men will NEVER be the same. They’re at risk of falling away from their faith because of it; so might others who were/are wavering in their faith in God for whatever reason. Now, they could, along with those who are blinded by Satan into not believing in God at all, very easily say-”See? I told you this church/God stuff is fake, and evil at it’s core, and I want no part of it!”
If the allegations prove false, then you have 4 young men who have plotted against someone falsely, and perpetrated some vicious lies about him, from which he, and they may never recover.
It’s a sad situation on all fronts.
September 28th, 20109:56 am
WWJD, you are so ironically funny saying that Eddie took a licking. Your blind faith is dangerous, and why dredge up your phony racism charge? This issue is solely about potential abuse — of authority and children — by a man in a position of trust, and who has not helped his image by hiding behind legalese.
Sounds like a shakedown to me !
September 28th, 201010:02 am
It is interesting that these sexual allegations were made after the men were caught vandalizing and burglarizing New Birth Cathedral. I am sure all four young men are friends and probably inco hoots with this mafia type shakedown against New Birth and Pastor Long. My prayers are with Bishop Long and his family during this challenging time of their life.
September 28th, 201010:06 am
I’m not letting the accusers or their family or friends off either. In the age of Michael Jackson, and in the age of us teaching our children from the womb about sexual predators, why do they allow themselves to be abused like this. They walk in it with their eyes wide open. Better stay away from those videos glorifying the likes of Diddy and Jayz and the rest wanting to live that champagne life. But look at the price you will pay. Everybody getting it in until they get caught, then all parties cry foul.
Frankly I’m sick of all liars from the prison to the pulpit and everything else in between. And I’m disappointed that this can happen, even after the age of Michael Jackson. It doesn’t have to happen, but as long as people lie and love money more than the consequences they will face engaging in deviant behavior, things will never change.
There never has to be any victims of sexual predators anymore, because innocence is lost. If a child can choose to disobey what he was taught, than he is old enough to suffer the consequences. I mean, after you leave your momma’s house and walk into the predator’s lair, what do you want your mother to do for you after the fact? And the parents, what did they think when their child came home with all this stuff.
Everybody making excuses for bad behavior and bad parenting and it’s getting old.
September 28th, 201010:08 am
THE KEEPERS OF THE SECRETS OF ALL PARTIES INVOLVED ARE JUST AS GUILTY. PARENTS, CHURCH STAFF, FRIENDS, FAMILY . . . YOU ARE ALL GUILTY AND CONTRIBUTE TO THIS MADNESS.
YOU ARE AS SICK OF YOUR SECRETS, SO GET HELP!!!
September 28th, 201010:14 am
let’s just hold our rocks people, let the evidence be revealed then make your remarks, he could be guilty if he is he is so wrong, he could be innocent and they are wrong. dont casr your stones just yet.
September 28th, 201010:16 am
WXH – My FAITH is unbreakable. I love JESUS with all my heart and soul. REAL CHRISTIANS are not afraid to show their FAITH and will talk about the good news all the time. REAL CHRISTIANS already know how we got the “VICTORY” and we look forward to the second coming of CHRIST. I encourage you to get in a Bible teaching, preachng church so you will not be filled with hatred and rage. In ATL racism, hatred and rage are out-of-control and we need ALL REAL CHRISTIANS to “GET UP” and beat the devil out of the ATL.
September 28th, 201010:32 am
Wow, reading WWJD’s comment was quite the eye opener. First of all, I didn’t realize Jesus was black, but whatever. Eddie Long preys on people like you, who are blindly led by these con artist evangelists. Do you really want your tithes used to buy his boyfriends homes, jewelry, vacations, cars? That’s not a man of God. That’s a man who’s scammed thousands of uneducated, not very bright people to send him their hard-earned money for “God’s” work (aka, private jets, luxury mansions, trips, tacky gold jewelry). How many of these mega ministers do you have to watch rip off people before you finally get a clue that they’re some of the worst criminals out there? Do you think it’s appropriate for Eddie Long to send pics of himself in tight spandex to these boys? The reason he refuses to say he didn’t do these things is because he knows they have evidence to the contrary. Saying, “I’m going to fight these allegations”, is a long way from saying, “I absolutely did not do these things”. If I was being accused of these allegations, I would be screaming from the highest mountain top to look at the evidence. The man is a con artist on the highest level.
September 28th, 201010:33 am
Gotta love the South! WWJD’s “takes a licking” comment shows the same hysterical self-unawareness as all the people bragging about going to “tea-bagging” events did last year. That special blend of religious conservatism in an environment of very prominent homosexuality that exists in the South leaves many gays raised in the church unable to recognize their own gayness even when it’s ‘dangling’ right in front of their faces.
I don’t follow Long, but his words against homosexuality seem to condemn the act of rear entry. If that’s his understanding, then all other forms of activity, including ‘taking a licking’ are fair game w/o having to feel guilt. Cognitive dissonance mixed with a healthy dose of self-denial.
September 28th, 201010:45 am
Awe, the poor, poor victims who participated in gay sex to get a new car and a nice apartment. Of course they are all 100% straight…LOL. And now they want even more money and gifts. It is disgusting.
September 28th, 201011:08 am
From unreliable sources, it was revealed unto me that New Birth choir has added another song to their repertoire and rearranged the words. Song goes something like this, “Were you there when they crucified our bishop, were you there when they nailed him in the media, oooh sometimes it’s like a jungle out here and it will be a miracle if we don’t go under. Meanwhile Bishop Long with his CD players whether they are in his car or in his house along with his MP3 player and cell phone ring tone is playing Human Leagues ” I’m only human, of flesh, of blood, a man, h-u-m-a-n, born to make mistakes to get himself through the storm. Someone on the forum has said let’s just hold our rocks and don’t cast your stones just yet. I have news for this someone under no circumstances will any rocks or stones will be held back. They weren’t held back for Richard Nixon. They weren’t held back for Jimmy Swaggart, They weren’t held back for Jim and Tammy Bakker. Let’s get close to home, they weren’t even held back for Earl Paulk. So why should an exception be made for Bishop Long?
September 28th, 201011:11 am
AJC, why aren’t all of Mike Luckovich’s cartoons open for comments? There have been several that I wanted to comment on and comments were closed. What is the criteria for allowing comments?
September 28th, 201011:32 am
If JESUS came back to day and every one was line up for judgement and he told you every sin that you did from child hood to now would you be innocent or guilty. Sin is sin no matter who did what he with out sin cast the first stone MY PRAYER IS FOR THE PEOPLE THAT’S NOT SAVE THAT THEY WILL TURST GOD AND NOT MAN. GOD IS REAL TRY HIM FOR YOUR SELF ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TO REPENT AND ASK GOD TO COME INTO YOUR HEART MAKE HIM YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR PLEASE LETS PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY WE NEED PEACE NOT WAR IT DONT MATTER IF WE BLACK, WHITE GOD LOVE ALL OF US AND HE WANT US TO LOVE PLEASE DONT LET THIS KEEP YOU FROM GOD. GOD SO LOVE THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON THAT WHO SO EVER BELIEVE IN HIM SHALL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVER LASTING LIFE. PRAY MY BROTHERS AND SISTER PRAY GOD IS THE ANSWER.
September 28th, 201011:50 am
This whole situation with eddie long , has been taken in the wrong direction from the beginning, part of the public is trying to find a racial slant, and the other part trying to blame the young men. even if he (Long) was a victim of a “get rich quick” scheme does not matter. in that case all should be made liable. But the fact is the acts were commited, crimes against the church were commited. But to me it seems that you can only “Lead” someone as far as that person’s faith will let you. I think Long is a disgrace to the ministry that he supposedly serves, and should be dealt with accordingly.
I have never held a lot of respect for any pastor that reaches a social standing so high that they forgot why they are there to begin with., and then start worshipping the almighty Dollar, and not the almighty God that they should be serving, it’s sad when you can ride in a plush limo, to attend service at a Multi-million dollar church, and see so many people along the way that have nothing at all, and not feel any compassion at all. when you build your church in an exclusive type neighborhood, just so you won’t be bothered by people living on the street.
Regardless if Long is found guilty or not, one day he will be judged on his own for his acts, maybe then he will realize that despite rumors to the contrary, There really is a God.
September 28th, 201012:04 pm
What cracked me up was watching all the blind a%& idiot “christiian” rats that were applauding and getting all excited over this idiot…! Guilty or not… my Pastor never sent me picture of himself from his hotel suite..!!! WAKE UP YOU BLIND WEAK FOLLOWERS of total CRAP..!
September 28th, 201012:10 pm
If these guys were at the age of consent, why do they feel they have been wronged. They are obviously gay themselves by their own testimony, so where is the injustice.
September 28th, 201012:14 pm
There is Eddie Longs truth, and the young men truth, and some where in the middle lies the real truth. This case will never go to court it will settle, but unlike Michael Jackson Long and his church will not survive. As for the person comparing Eddie Long to Jesus their is no comparison, not even remotely. Eddie Long will not sacrifice himself, or family for anyone. Eddie Long is, and will always be about him and his big ego.
September 29th, 20101:00 pm
hi boys and girls. waiting to take your questions…
September 29th, 20101:05 pm
Why is it so difficult for you to come up with any material critical of Obama? You didn’t seem to have any problem attacking the President from 2001-2008..
September 29th, 20101:06 pm
So how was the fallout from the Bishop Long cartoon?
September 29th, 20101:09 pm
What about Dez Bryant.
I always read your cartoons- how about not being so pro democrat all the time? Seems like you rip on the Republicans 7 cartoons out of every 10-
hi woodstock bob
thx for the question. see today’s cartoon. obama was left with a huge mess to clean up and he’s been doing a pretty good job.
September 29th, 20101:10 pm
Please do a cartoon on Cynthia Tucker- Obama could be Satan himself and she would support him
September 29th, 20101:11 pm
bmcchgo, most folks liked the cartoon.
Woodstock Bob is Bitter
September 29th, 20101:12 pm
How are you able to capture a story, moment, etc., with just one picture? Does a drawing take you hours, minutes, etc?
btw, dude you do good work. I always look forward to your cartoons. It’s, sometimes, the only thing that makes sense on this site.
September 29th, 20101:14 pm
i follow the news. lately, it’s been christine o’connell, the gop pledge, newt, nathan…so when dems are in the news doing something i do cartoons on them. see today’s plus my recent toons on the midterms
What 3 books makes/made the most impact on your life?
Hey Mike is Bitter
September 29th, 20101:15 pm
‘Most folks’ liked the Bishop Long cartoon? Sounds generic. I know you got some flak. But cool if you do not want to acknowledge the hate…
I realize you are an editorial cartoonist, but I agree with Woodstock Bob. A majority of Georgia is conservative… you should swallow your pride and do some cartoons criticizing Obama more often.
The majority of the country doesn’t think Obama is doing a good job either. Higher employment, less jobs, more government wasn’t the Change everyone was Hoping for…
Why don’t you have comments active on your regular posts? Many other editorialists have active blogs, and I’d love to hear comments from all sides on your work as well.
Otherwise, Do you refer to your work as “cartoons” “pictures”, “artwork” or some other personal identifier?
September 29th, 20101:17 pm
“The majority of the country doesn’t think Obama is doing a good job either. Higher employment, less jobs, more government wasn’t the Change everyone was Hoping for…”
The majority of the country realizes he inherited this mess from the GOP and Bush. It will take time to dig us out.
September 29th, 20101:18 pm
Yeah, I saw today’s cartoon. No doubt you were expecting my question. Good job with the fig leaf.
hi Woodstock Bob is Bitter
i spend most of the day farting around until panic sets in. that’s how i come up with ideas. i show them to colleagues and get a lot of thumbs down before i come up with one that’s halfway decent.
unemployment that is…
And don’t forget that the majority of America was against the Health Care Plan…
A majority of Americans even want to repeal it at this point. Doesn’t seem to me like Obama is doing a good job at all.
Off the subject… When did you first realize you were so artistically talented?
September 29th, 20101:19 pm
I saw you on CNN a few years back and you stated that you were an independent. Following your drawings over the years, I find that difficult to swallow.
“Hey Mike” said 7/10, I’d estimate it’s almost 9/10
Embrace your Liberal/Progressive leanings by admitting it. You’ll feel better
Hi Mike! Big fan! How about something about how the republicans always whine about getting picked on?
September 29th, 20101:20 pm
“A majority of Americans even want to repeal it at this point.”
That’s a lie.
September 29th, 20101:21 pm
Huge fan ML! How ’bout addressing ed reform with regards to the new release of “Waiting for Superman” which is receiving a lot of press coverage right now??
Would you consider opening your cartoons to comments? I’m sure you get a ton of hits already, but it would probably double if it were open for discussion.
Hey Mike is Bitter
i’m happy to acknowledge the hate. that’s a large part of the feedback i get.
September 29th, 20101:22 pm
Hi Luckovich! Enjoy your work and enjoyed blogging here for a while — so why did you get out of the blogging business?
Check out the latest msnbc poll- 51% want to repeal the health care plan
Read em and weep.
September 29th, 20101:23 pm
I love to read your cartoons!
My son is only 8 but he started doing some cartoons, and I certainly never encouraged him in that pursuit! How did you get started and what advice could you offer?
to those asking why my blog doesn’t allow for comments, it’s because i’d have to sit and monitor them for dirty words and stuff. it would be a pain.
September 29th, 20101:24 pm
i’m trying to answer as nmany of these as i can but i’m a crappy typist
September 29th, 20101:26 pm
How did you start with cartoons? Was that your first gig at a paper or did you have a column first?
September 29th, 20101:28 pm
i’ve always drawn. that’s the key lots of practice. tell your son to keep drawing! in elementary school, my dad was transferred a lot, dso the 1st thing i’d do at a new school is caricature the teacher and then pass the drawing around. then i’d have 30 new friends.
September 29th, 20101:29 pm
Your drawings are top notch (if people say that anymore). I love the controversy that they stir up, but isn’t that what political cartoons are all about? My all time faves are the memorials to Lewis Grizzard and Skip Caray and also the Statue of Liberty 9/11 one. I miss Grizzard and Celestine Sibley but you and John Kessler are the reasons I still love the AJC! ;o) Thanks and don’t go anywhere!
September 29th, 20101:30 pm
Mike, I think your work is brilliant. How’s your part of the news biz– are editorial cartoonists finding their careers curtailed like other newspaper people?
Remember when raising a terror alert just prior to an election would have provided you with several days worth of material? Those were the days, eh, Mike?
once folks learn what health care reform does and how it reduces the deficit, support will grow. hcr has been demonized with nonsense about death panels, it’s no wonder people are confused
September 29th, 20101:31 pm
From MSNBC: A new AP poll finds that Americans who think the law should have done more outnumber those who think the government should stay out of health care by 2-to-1.
The poll found that about four in 10 adults think the new law did not go far enough to change the health care system, regardless of whether they support the law, oppose it or remain neutral.
Read ‘em and STFU!
September 29th, 20101:32 pm
it depends on the cartoonist. some have been downsized. most are fine.
September 29th, 20101:33 pm
My favorite of your toons was the one with the Iranian dude walking away with Iraq on a silver platter and the guy saying to Bush “well you could at least ask for your platter back.” Good insight.
you’re telling me. when W left, my job got much harder.
I follow your cartoons religiously. Love them; a breath of fresh air in this hotbed of raging conservatism. At least Newsweek gets it.
September 29th, 20101:35 pm
i recognize your handle from bookman’s blog. i think you also used to come to my blog back in the day. i’m glad you liked the cartoon. we did hand iraq to iran on a silver platter.
September 29th, 20101:36 pm
hi Bob Kirby
i never know when newsweek’s gonna run my cartoons. i find out when it comes in the mail. it’s fun when they run them.
Toward the end of Bush’s term Tom Toles was drawing a caricature of Bush very similar to yours (short with the big ears). I like his stuff but do you think he took some notes from you?
Also, are they making you do more color? I kind of always dug the black and white.
Keep up the great work.
September 29th, 20101:37 pm
Your Aug. 31 2010 cartoon was the most disgusting thing I have seen from you. Showing your country and it’s armed services in such a disgraceful way should make you ashamed.
I got intense enjoyment out of the Glenn Beck cartoon last month. (Roommate always has Beck’s program on at 5 pm.) I have not noticed any preferential treatment of Obama by Luckovich.
Huge fan ML! How ’bout addressing ed reform with regards to the new release of “Waiting for Superman” which is receiving a lot of press coverage right now??
September 29th, 20101:38 pm
Dud, you are funny and insightful. Always look forward to your cartoons. Are there plans for
cartoons on Stewart and Colbert senate hearings?
September 29th, 20101:39 pm
Eugene T., ALL other cartoonists copy me! kidding.i am doing more color. i’m only required to do a color one on sunday. i’ve been doing more lately because it’s kind of fun.
Mike, I don’t have a question but I just wanted to say you do a fantastic job and I love your cartoons. Please keep up the good work!
Hey Mike, I’m a big fan and have your Lewis and Catfish at the gates cartoon on my wall. I’m a big Obama fan too, but he needs his butt kicked for warrant less wiretapping, suspension of Habeas, DADT, GITMO and ordering warrant less assassination. You’re great at keeping issues in the public eye. Any chance you’ll address one or more of these issues.
Thanks for your work!
I’m thinking you probably have one of the best jobs in the world.
September 29th, 20101:40 pm
thanks for the kind words. i love doing them. every day i’m excited about what i’m going to come up with. drawing cartoons is my favorite hobby so it’s great to do as a profession
Lewis Grizzard's Ghost
September 29th, 20101:42 pm
Catfish says, “Hey”.
What are you gonna do when Bobby Cox finally hangs up his cleats …
September 29th, 20101:43 pm
I enjoy viewing your cartoons everyday. They give me something to smile about. I like the cartoon you did about Lebron’s “decision”… I noticed the detailed tattoos that you drew. They were hilarious!
great comment. that bugs me too. what’s he thinking? he was a professor of constitutional law for crap sake! look for an upcoming cartoon on that
Would you ever consider running for any political office?
September 29th, 20101:45 pm
haha, drawing those tattoos were the funnest part of the drawing for me. one tattoo said “i brake for yard sales” i thought that was funny. another tattoo was of “hello kitty”
Keep up the great job! Your work is on the money every time!
September 29th, 20101:46 pm
I guess if you are right the Dems won’t lose any seats in a few weeks will they?
You can trust me, I’m a doctor.
September 29th, 20101:47 pm
drew, great question. that’s my fantasy, to be a u.s. senator. that way i could really help people. any legislation i sponsored would be in cartoon form
How about “BooGate” as a cartoon topic? Seems like you’ve been going soft on Sarah Palin lately, and she’s always good for a laugh. Keep up the good work!
September 29th, 20101:49 pm
Thanks for doing this Mike. I know you have to keep the comments closed on your cartoons for certain reasons…cough, cough…conservatives…cough. So this is a great way to get some insight into what is behind your work.
September 29th, 20101:50 pm
While you are definitely way left of center, even the most fanatical right winger has to admit that Republican politicians give so much more fodder for humor. It’s so bad that it’s almost like hunting in a baited field.
Years ago I wouldn’t read your stuff because it was too “slanted.” But then I pulled my head out of my rear and saw the truth I stated above (which you apparently knew all along). To be honest, you HAVE to laugh to keep from crying at some of the stupidity. I now enjoy 98% of your work regardless of who you expose. Of course as neither a democrat nor a republican, it’s easier to see the stupidity of both parties and get double the laughs now.
Keep up the good work and once again with today’s cartoon, you nailed it.
Pro Obama? of course dems are going to lose seats! the last 2 elections they’ve gained seats even in gop leaning districts. it’s common for the party in power to lose seats in a midterm. voters blame the party in power if the economy’s bad. even if it was caused by the party currently out of power
September 29th, 20101:51 pm
I simply love your work. Wish I had something to offer Keep it up!
Also, please keep comments closed. I’d waste way too much time bickering with people…
September 29th, 20101:55 pm
you’re the man, Fred! i was at the pentagon a few years ago. most of those officers i assume to be right wing. on more than one occasion, i was told that while they didn’t agree with me they would fight for my freedom to say what i want. that’s what america’s about. incidentally, in nov. i’ll be in afghanistan with other cartoonists drawing the troops and visiting injured soldiers. hopefully, i’ll be able to tweet while i’m there
My husband and I love your work. You do a great job!
September 29th, 20101:56 pm
thanks for reading my cartoons tom! i have no idea what i’m going to do today. does anyone have a good topic for me?
September 29th, 20101:57 pm
I gave you one. Or did I miss it.
September 29th, 20101:58 pm
Seriously? When will Obama take responsibility for the economy? It’s gotten worse thanks to his policies. Most of his advisors are jumping ship. Give us a break.
And your comment about health care is exactly what is wrong with Democrat thinking. Everyone acknowledges that there are some good things in the plan that will benefit us. But that doesn’t matter. The people didn’t want it. So the gov’t shoved it down our throats. Do you really want a gov’t that goes against what the people want? Cmon man.
Rewrite the healthcare plan with a few of the good things people like and don’t make it so expensive that we go bankrupt. Obama doubled Bush’s debt in 18 months.
thanks quirky. you all are being too nice! i know there are plenty of you out there who don’t like me so well.
September 29th, 20101:59 pm
i missed it breezy. sorry. good idea. i’ll put that on my list
So why did we all get tossed out of here the first time around?
September 29th, 20102:00 pm
Hey Mike, enjoy your cartoons. Always get a kick out of seeing the occasional one in my small town alabama newspaper
Mike- we like you just fine. Just remember the AJC’s readership is composed of conservatives and not just democrats. The Dems screw up quite a bit… you should call them on it more. Good work.
What are your future plans? Will there be a book published? How about a new field in art?
September 29th, 20102:07 pm
hi everyone, thx for coming on and chatting. i’ll be back next wed. from 1-2. please come back, especially Pro obama? so i can show you the error of your ways
October 6th, 20101:01 pm
hi everyone. what’s on your mind? did you see my mark richt cartoon today? i’m typing with one finger, but will try typing with two to speed things up.
October 6th, 20101:05 pm
Hi Mike! I saw you when you visited Kennesaw State a while ago to give a talk to us, and you signed an autograph for me… you are the best! Also, thanks for following me on twitter! (I’m @nintendoboy) So this is kind of random, but do you do portraits? I would pay a lot of money if the great Mike Luckovich would draw a picture of me that I could post on my blog or something!! I know you’re probably so busy, but you DID always say you always work right up to the deadline, so maybe you could spare a little bit of time in the morning! Thanks again for doing the great work that you do!!
Hey Mike! Do you have any cartoonists that have influenced your work?
October 6th, 20101:07 pm
yes i do do cartoon portraits. i love doing them because getting a likeness of someone is really fun.
October 6th, 20101:09 pm
What did you mean when you said John Boehner will be the first person of color to be House Speaker, if Republicans win the majority in the House of Representatives?
October 6th, 20101:10 pm
hi TheGreatGonzo26 what a fabulous moniker! cartoonists that are my biggest influences would be mort drucker from mad magazine. when i was a kid, i used to study his stuff. now i see him at cartoonist conventions and we’re friends, so that’s pretty neat.
October 6th, 20101:11 pm
i was trying to be funny. he has a very deep, almost orange tan.
October 6th, 20101:13 pm
Why are comments about your cartoons not allowed under normal circumstances? Is that your decision? Or AJC.com’s?
Usually all we get is a “I like Luckovich/I don’t like Luckovich” poll.
That’s awesome Mike! I remember you offered to draw someone and ended up drawing a really cute picture of this little girl in the audience at KSU! How can we go about applying to be the subject of your art???
October 6th, 20101:15 pm
Is the picture above a self-portrait and if so, what’s the meaning of the crayon?
if blogging was set up all the time, i’d have to monitor it and they wouldn’t be much fun. it would screw up my concentration coming up with ideas.
October 6th, 20101:17 pm
I often use your cartoons in my history classroom to spark current events discussions.
i don’t know why i drew myself holding a crayon. it just seemed kind ofv fun and silly. no deep meaning.
October 6th, 20101:18 pm
I like your cartoons even if I am conservative. However you could have given Eddie Long a more harsh cartoon.
jeffrey email me at email@example.com
Do you have anything in mind in case “Shady” wins the governor’s race?
October 6th, 20101:19 pm
smokemonster, did you see the one of him on the horse as the old spice guy? that was sort of tough.
Who is the most fun for you to draw? Who is the most difficult? Love your work!
October 6th, 20101:20 pm
Just wondering, Mike.
Though I rarely agree with you… I think you were at your best with your “We’ve reached the top” and “teary-eyed Statue of Liberty” cartoons after 9-11.
October 6th, 20101:21 pm
Thanks, Mike. I enjoy your cartoons very much.
hi Independent Minded
i’m assuming you mean n. deal? i’m surprised all his financial and ethics problems don’t seem to be hurting him. i think voters in ga just want to make my job easy.
October 6th, 20101:23 pm
Mike, without a doubt your best cartoon ever was Lewis Grizzard and Catfish arriving at the Pearly Gates.
October 6th, 20101:24 pm
But I do have one beef with you. You usually do cartoons after someone of note passes away.
Yet, there was nothing when Tony Snow died (though you had one for Tim Russert.) Was it because Snow was a Fox News alum and former press secretary for GW Bush?
October 6th, 20101:25 pm
Rickster , what do you mean you RARELY agree with me? i’m all-knowing, so get on board. i’m glad you liked those 9/11 related cartoons. i try to use humor in my cartoons, but it seems the ones folks remember are the serious ones. thanks for reading them despite disagreeing with most of them.
Mike that was more funny. I did laugh at that.
I thought it was funny how Eddie Long likened himself to David. When in reality those boys are the Davids and he is the Goliath.
October 6th, 20101:27 pm
Mike Im a big fan of your artistic work (dont always agree with some of your political views) but I have to say the piece today of Mark Richt was hilarious. I had to call everyone into my office to check it out. Keep up the good work.
An idea for this week:
Not that Im condoning the action (I would never shoot someone on purpose unless I had no other choice) but the story of the young men wearing the baggy pants getting shot has some definite humor to it.(Im recalling a little Crocodile Dundee “I only knicked ‘em!) Somebody in mainstream culture (singer, rapper, artist, etc.) has to finally put an end to this ridiculous fashion statement. Thanks and have a good one!
tony snow wasn’t that well known to most people. i’ve done cartoons on republicans when they die and i even put them at the pearly gates! paul coverdale comes to mind.
October 6th, 20101:28 pm
Mike, I’m a great admirer of your work. You’ve turned more than one crappy day into a good one with your humor and wisdom. Keep up the good job.
smokemonster,i personally think eddie long has issues.
October 6th, 20101:29 pm
I assume you’ll be doing a cartoon about MSNBC being in bed with this administration and the DNC in order to balance your one from 10-5
I’ll be waiting:-)
October 6th, 20101:31 pm
Mike, has anyone you have ever skewered blown his or her stack? On the flip side, has anyone you’ve ever lampooned in a cartoon contacted you to ask for a copy?
thanks for your comment. i love doing this and try very hard to do the best cartoon i possibly can every day, i don’t want to let readers like yourself down or myself for that matter. i get upset with myself when i do a cartoon i’m not happy with and look forward to the next day to try to redeem myself.
October 6th, 20101:32 pm
i don’t watch msnbc, but aren’t they the ones that air joe scarborough?
October 6th, 20101:34 pm
And Tim Russert was?
Mike, concerning the cartoon yesterday about Fox News and the GOP. Are you also planning one like that for CNN, MSNBC and the Democrat Party?
most definitely agreed. The whole thing is sick right down to his pandering to his blind followers

great question. newt gets very upset about my cartoons. he once banned an ajc reporters from covering him because i did a cartoon of him presenting divorce papers to his cancer-stricken wife in the hospital. once, an ajc columnist told me that newt told him that he had to pull over on the roadside to compose himself after seeing a cartoon i did. i also think newt has serious issues. check out jay bookman’s blog on newt today.
They also air Keith Overthetopermann.
October 6th, 20101:37 pm
I almost missed you. I LOVE your cartoons. I have a copy of yesterday’s on my desk. Keep up the good work. Don’t let these racist conservatives get to you
October 6th, 20101:40 pm
i follow the news when doing my cartoons. i don’t think “hey, idid one on fox yesterday, time for one onn cnn today.” that would be boring. i also have a point of view. if you check my archive, you’ll see when thec dems screw up, i hit them. obama has made my job hard though because he’s smart.
Abena is evidence stereotypes go bothways. Thank You for that.
October 6th, 20101:41 pm
You are so spot on with your cartoons. I wish you were in Calif. so you could do cartoons about our local politicians. Great job…. keep up the great work…… I turn everyone I know onto you
October 6th, 20101:42 pm
thx for the comment. liberals and conservatives are what make this country great. and i appreciate the far right conservatives who’ve given me christine o’donnell in delaware!
October 6th, 20101:45 pm
i’m on twitter, if you’re interested. i tell what i’m thinking about doing and then a short while later, the cartoon posts. thanks for reading me. i’ve got to do something on marijuana legalization soon!
October 6th, 20101:47 pm
Rickster i do see oberman occasionally. he is a little full of himself. it’s at times almost self-parody. i sometimes think as he’s giving some serious monologue, that he’s going to burst out laughing.
October 6th, 20101:48 pm
October 6th, 20101:49 pm
Love today’s Mark Richt/UGA cartoon. I am a UGA Fan…I just hope CMR decides not to take VII for a walk or that could really happen!
i can take a couple more questions. has everyone fallen asleep?
October 6th, 20101:52 pm
thx Lowcountry Dawg
my daughter’s a freshman at uga, so although i admit i’m not a huge sports fan, i’m following all things uga much more closely. also, so many folks follow sports, i want to be sure and do cartoons on it.
hey mike! i really enjoyed the m.r. cartoon. also some time ago the one with the “support our troops” ribbon & asterisk beside it with a disclaimer! it was and is too true. hope all’s well, all the best from soouth georgia!
October 6th, 20101:54 pm
one final thought on the mark richt cartoon. sometimes i feel a little guilty hitting someone who’s down, but i figure that’s why someone like him makes the big bucks, to take the good with the bad.
October 6th, 20101:56 pm
dont feel quilty the dawgs havent done anything in years. he deserves it and more.
While you’re lampooning questionable candidates (ie. O’Donnell in DE) any plans on doing something about Mysterio the Democrat Senate candidate in SC?
October 6th, 20101:58 pm
now i feel better. and thanks everyone for joining me today. i’ll be back here next wed. 1-2, so maybe i’ll hear from you again then. thank you all again too for taking the time to read my cartoons
October 6th, 20101:59 pm
Mike, I’ve been following your cartoons for a long time and you are obviously very good at what you do. I have to disagree with you though. You very, very rarely “hit” the dems when they do something wrong. In fact during the last presidential election, go back to your archives. I wonder if you were one of the many on the Obama payroll!

hi everybody. knowing i’m doing this live-blogging thing today has forced me to work ahead, so i’ve got ideas on wall st. greed and nathan deal. not sure if i’ll use either, but glad i have ideas this early.
October 13th, 20101:12 pm
Wow, can’t believe college kids drink underage and get speeding tickets. This AJC BS is getting old. Can’t wait for it to go out of business … Try living in Athens. The cops will get you for ANYTHING.
October 13th, 20101:13 pm
Hi Mike – do you ever think about news stories that just go away? It seems like the public loses interest and so the media stops pursing big stories (not sure of the direction of cause). I wonder if you ever could use your platform to bring back issues that people have moved on from (i.e. oil spill, Mrs. Sherrod’s firing, etc.). I understand that’s kind of risky, but just a thought. Now that I think about it, you kind of did that with the recent WMD in the mirror one which was excellent…
October 13th, 20101:14 pm
thanks for your upbeat comment john.
October 13th, 20101:15 pm
Has the live blogging started? Your strips are always great!
Mike, the funnies cartoon so far was the one you just did with UGA football. Great work. Can’t wait to get your tweet to check out your latest creation.
October 13th, 20101:16 pm
we americans have the attention spans of two year olds. it’s frustrating. unfortunately, a cartoon isn’t the best way to remind people.
Okay – another question. What do you think the folks on Fox News will complain about when the GOP retakes the house and senate in November (uggghhh) and then Palin becomes president in 2012. Will they go out of business?
dana, it’s started i’m just a slow typist.
October 13th, 20101:18 pm
thanks jason. uga’s given me a lot of material. i want to personally mark richt.
October 13th, 20101:19 pm
tom, fox won’t go out of business, for 8 years during the bush admin. they did fine.
October 13th, 20101:20 pm
Re: attention spans of American people, I agree. Do you think that is something that we have always dealt with, and will continue to deal with until the end of the world (aka 2012)? Is it getting worse – do you think it could get better?
October 13th, 20101:21 pm
Mike, has any of your subjects ever contacted you for an original work that you have done and was published in the paper? Also, has anyone ever in the past ever contacted you or your editors and requested something to be stopped?.
Great work as always, Mike. Keep up the good work !
October 13th, 20101:22 pm
Cool, I’m here! I love the UGA one. Very funny. Glad that you have twitter so I can see when you have new stuff up.
There seems to be a lot of hemming and hawing from Republicans and Conservadems about the budget deficit yet we don’t see them talking too much about the bulk of our discretionary funding — defense cuts. Maybe this’d make a good toon or two.
i was just thinking of cartoon ideas. it might be funny to do a cartoon of obama rescuing a miner lbeled u.s. economy, but then he can’t unlock the rescue capsule the miner’s in. does that even make sense?
October 13th, 20101:23 pm
Feel free to ignore these if I’m sending too many, lol. If you could be friends with one person, real or fictional, who would it be and why. Sorry for the cliche question, but I’d be interested to know.
October 13th, 20101:25 pm
Mike, that UGA cartoon was hella funny today. Which genere generates the most response, politics or sports?
good point, zaidjilani
i read somewhere that the u.s. spends something like 50 times the amount on defense than anybody else. that’s crazy.
I like the obama/miner/economy idea. You’re onto something, but I don’t think it’s quite there.
October 13th, 20101:26 pm
Re: “…but then he can’t unlock the rescue capsule the miner’s in”
…because he’s being blocked by a person or thing (like a lock) labeled “GOP Filibuster”
October 13th, 20101:28 pm
good question, ronaldjc
probably the most angry responses come from cartoons i do on politics. if i do something on say rush limbaugh, his followers get very upset, which is odd, since rush spends a lot of time criticizing others.
October 13th, 20101:29 pm
geez david harris, i hope you can’t draw! that’s clever!
Mike, has an editor ever said you can’t run a toon because of the subject? If so, fill us in.
Athens uga fan
You mention Mark Richt, UGA, and Nathan Deal. You have to be one of those AJC Atlanta Liberals. Another reason why I cancelled my subscription.
October 13th, 20101:30 pm
you’re probably right tom. i often have a sketch sit on my drawing board and change it throughout the day.
What is your best advice to a college student looking to follow in your footsteps?
October 13th, 20101:31 pm
Budget goes to the doctor for a checkup. Doctor says he’s overweight. His belly (spare tire) is labeled defense spending and he’s carrying two iron weights called “medicare” and “social security”, yet the doctor tells him his fingers (misc. departments) are too fat.
Nobody wants to talk about making cuts to defense, medicare and social security, yet any other cuts are just superficial and will get nowhere close to balancing the budget nor about raising taxes.
Okay – Obama is pushing the miner’s up from the bottom, and the GOP is at the top with banners celebrating their success. It drives me crazy that all the hard work and sacrifice by the dems is probably going to pay off when the GOP is in power, so they’ll get the credit. People expected such a quick fix (like your recent cartoon about the GOP driving the car into the ditch and the Dems not pulling it out fast enough).
October 13th, 20101:32 pm
Mike, do you own your drawings or are they the property of the AJC?
October 13th, 20101:34 pm
yes, Athens uga fan. mark richt, the well known far-right tea partying football coach. when liberals are as ethically-challenged and bad with their finances as nathan deal, i relish hitting them too. you may restart your subscription tomorrow.

October 13th, 20101:35 pm
well thanks a lot David Harris, now if i do that cartoon everyone’s going to know it’s your idea!
October 13th, 20101:36 pm
The reason I asked about ownership of drawings is because Robert Arial, here in Columbia, SC makes prints, posters, etc. of his and sells them. Have you ever thought about that? Do you know Arial?
October 13th, 20101:37 pm
Mike, your sketches are often more insightful and potentially subversive in comparison to common journalisic standards. To what do you attribute this extra permissiveness? If it makes us laugh, is it less threatening to your editors et al?
well, ronaldjc i think they’re mine. i’ve always found it wise not to ask too many questions.
October 13th, 20101:38 pm
Mike, I loved your cartoon on FoxNews and the GOP’s sharing the same secretary.
Do you think that you could do one on these big GOP donors, who fund the TEA Party and the 527 groups–with patriotic-sounding names–producing the TV ads attacking the Democratic candidates? Their anonymity allows them to influence elections with deception, half-truths and outright lies. The ads trick working-class folks into voting against their own best self-interests (and, consequently, vote for the interests of people who oppress them, i.e., the super-rich. It’s too complicated for any of us to understand completely, but one of your great cartoons might boil it down to the picture that we can all see. Any ideas?
October 13th, 20101:39 pm
mike b, good question. i think with humor, you can get away with being a little more edgy and sometimes you can actually get closer to the truth, in my humble opinion. thanks for reading them.
October 13th, 20101:40 pm
October 13th, 2010
@Mluckovich – just get him to give a release in this blog and credit him as a muse. LOL!
October 13th, 20101:41 pm
ronaldjc, that’s a great idea! i’m going to start selling cartoonist arial prints!
October 13th, 20101:42 pm
dnc bulldawg, i have that on my list. i get depressed about our country. big money decides everything through mis-information.
October 13th, 20101:43 pm
Mike, I love your cartoons. I see them in the Akron and Cleveland papers and online. Do you know Jack Davis? I have loved his work over the years for Mad, Time, TV Guide, etc. How is he? I’ve never met him, but I’ve seen him in a couple videos and he just seems like a great guy. Does he still do any work for the Georgia Bulldogs?
October 13th, 20101:44 pm
yes, and i appreciate you for that reason. keep up the good work.
October 13th, 20101:46 pm
in the next day or so, you’ll probably see cartoons from me using halloween in some way or another. i love the holidays just because they give me so many metaphors to use.
by the way, you all can follow me on twitter. i let you know what i’m working on and the cartoon posts shortly thereafter.
October 13th, 20101:49 pm
steve, jack davis is an old friend of mine. he’s in his 80’s and despite a bad case of shingles went overseas to visit the troops. he’s an arch conservative, so we don’t see eye to eye politically, but we like each other. i mean, i think he likes me. now that i think about it, he could secretly hate me. you know how those mad magazine cartoonists are.
October 13th, 20101:51 pm
i’m on the phone with cartoonist walt handelsman. he’s quite boring.
October 13th, 20101:54 pm
quick someone call Mike so he can click over
I’m glad to hear that you have that on your list and like your short summary: “big money decides everything through mis-information.” Don’t get depressed on us, however, we need you to make us laugh. Perhaps the “trick or treat” aspect of Halloween would be a way to get at this idea?
October 13th, 20101:56 pm
Funny comment about Arial toons. Do you know him? There has to be a cartoonist convention each year in Orlando, right?
October 13th, 20101:57 pm
to follow me on twitter, please go to @mluckovichajc. i was just kidding about my friend cartoonist walt handelsman. he’s not that boring.
Dude that was a harsh cartoon. not makin any Dawg friends today..
i like it…..
Do a catoon on the hapless Thrashers no there’s a joke of a franchise
Very funny cartoon this morning on UGA. Why are all the UGA players white?
October 13th, 20101:59 pm
you bring up a good point. often i get so mad about the american government’s state of dysfunction, that ihave to remember that to be most effective i’ve got to use humor to make my point. it’s hard sometimes when my face is streaked with tears.
Thanks for the kind words, Mike. I’d be greatly honored to have any ideas of mine – as incomplete as they are – expressed under your ink. Besides, it’s hard to claim any idea as “mine” since everything that’s entered my head originally came from outside my head – much of it from your cartoons !
October 13th, 20102:01 pm
Re: “@Mluckovich – just get him to give a release in this blog and credit him as a muse. LOL!”
I gladly give my release
October 13th, 20102:02 pm
Thanks for taking the time Mike, even if it was “mandated.” LOL!
I think David Harris is totally onto something. Defense spending is why we’re in the deficits we’re in. I understand why the GOP wants high defense spending, because the ways they shoot their mouths off and how they treat people, you need more defense.
But do we really need to spend in excess of $600 billion every year on defense?
It’s like our family bought a million dollar house but lost our job and are deciding to keep the house but get rid of all the furniture.
October 13th, 20102:04 pm
adam some of them are black. it’s hard to tell because they’re small in the drawing and wearing helmets. i probably should’ve labeled the white guys “white” and the black guys “black” to clear up any confusion.
well, that’s all the questions i have time for this week. i’ll be back in 2 weeks on wed. from 1 to 2, to respond to more of your hostility then. thanks everybody!
October 27th, 20101:09 pm
Hey Mike, I am a big fan! Can you draw a cartoon about student loan debt? News outlets have recently reported that student loan debt has surpassed all other types of consumer debt in this country–even credit cards, auto loans, etc!
October 27th, 20101:11 pm
October 27th, 20101:12 pm
great topic! i’ll add that to my really small list of topics.
Hey Mike. I’ve never been more turned off by campaign ads than I am with the sludge now being pumped out by the Barnes and Deal campaigns. I’m DREADING a runoff between these two clowns, and I imagine I’m not the only one. Might be good fodder for a cartoon.
October 27th, 20101:13 pm
Tu-Anh, i’ve been out of the country. what panda is pregnant and who impregnated her?
October 27th, 20101:14 pm
Loved the tribute to Bobby Cox, perfect … Looking forward to your take on Fredi G. when the time’s right.
Hey Mike, I really like your cartoons. Can you do something about Microsoft dying?
October 27th, 20101:15 pm
joeman, i was thinking about doing something on attack ads. thanks
How about a cartoon depicting how the Georgia GOP has somehow morphed Roy Barnes into Obama … My favorite cartoon of yours ever was the one where during the 2004 General Election, Zell Miller as Foghorn Leghorn, Dick Cheney, and G.W. Bush as Cheney’s toddler raced right past Bin Laden in order to bring John Kerry “to justice”. Classic.
October 27th, 20101:16 pm
Only because you asked, but the head stomping and handcuffing incidents seem to be calling out to be addressed…
Lun Lun here in Atlanta. She was inseminated with her partner, Yang Yang’s sperm…after a few failed efforts at mating.
wellrod, you know i read something about how microsoft is losing clout, but it didn’t register. that actually is a good topic. i’ll put it on my list.
October 27th, 20101:19 pm
i saw that story. it’s getting a lot of coverage on the blogs. it is a great topic, however, i wonder how many people actually know the story. that’s something i wrestle with when coming up with ideas. which news events are known enough to do a cartoon on.
October 27th, 20101:22 pm
rush cheney, the gop is really great at messaging. even when the message isn’t factual.
We’re in debt up to our freakin necks here thanks to Obama spending like a teenager at the mall, and where did it get us? An 800 billion dollar stimulus bill to pass to our kids, sky high unemployment, no new jobs in the private sector, and a health care bill that 60% of the country was against and remains against. Love to see you draw your way out of this one buddy. It’ll probably be one that blames it all on Bush. You’re good at those.
Kiss Obama’s caboose a little more why don’t ya?
Have you seen the stuff about the Rand Paul campaign guy’s head-stomping incident (our coverage here: http://thinkprogress.org/2010/10/27/head-stomper-demands-aplog/)
Maybe take that but make the head stomper corporate money or secret money and the person being stomped democracy.
October 27th, 20101:23 pm
I’ve listened to people complain about your politics and only picking on Republicans for years. It has been vindicating to see some recent caricatures you have done of the President and Democratic establishment. I well remember your scurrilous takes on Bill and Hillary. Though you can be a bit vicious at times, I have always enjoyed your work. Your tributes to those who pass on generally leave a tear in my eye.
I wanted to stop in and say thank you for your contributions to Atlanta. I always look for your perspective and humor. God Bless!
lun lun pregnant is good. drawing cartoons about inseminated pandas is easy.
October 27th, 20101:26 pm
atlanta native, thanks for your comment. readers forget sometimes that i hit democrats and republicans. i’ve had a blast over the years drawing cartoons about bill clinton.maybe i can do a cartoon about him and that panda.
Do one on Obama's legacy
Obama’s legacy might be the success of Cash for Clunkers. Of course the idiot didn’t make any effort to make sure the new cars we bought for everyone where American.
In case you didn’t know… although Foreign branded cars built in America give jobs to American workers, the vast majority of profits return to the home country. Duped again.
Perhaps a cartoon of a voting machine that only registers votes for Democrats. Oh wait, that’s real life (HR in NV) not a cartoon
October 27th, 20101:27 pm
KaidJilani – crowds stomping someone is Democracy at its finest. Our founding fathers looked down on mob rule, which is what a true democracy is. The French went with Democracy after their revolution – it went very poorly. Our founding fathers created a Republic to avoid the scourge of democratic mob rule.
Remember, a lynch mob is a democracy, the local sheriff who stops it with his single vote of no is the blessing of a republic.
how about a cartoon about how $1billion dollars of Afghanistan aid money ended up in Taliban hands?
October 27th, 20101:29 pm
How about NeNe Leakes new nose job?
thanks for reading my cartoons bryan w. as i mentioned earlier, i’ll be leaving for aghanistan at the end of next week, to spend a week with 5 other cartoonists visiting the troops and drawing for them. communication will be difficult, but i’m going to do my best to email what’s happening in real time.
I Made It
Hi Mike.. I’m so glad that I finally got an opportunity to join in.. I tend to be a smidging to late when you do these… but of course I really have nothing to say other than I LOVE YOUR COMIC STRIP… you are awesome… I appreciate your views even when I don’t agree b/c you make sense..
Thank you and keep up the awesome job..
Eternal Democrat no matter what
October 27th, 20101:33 pm
Do one on how easy it has been for the African American population to be tricked into eternally voting for the Democrats. It’s funny no matter what Obama does, they vote for him to the tune of 90%. He could reinstitute slavery and African Americans would just vote for him like a bunch of zombies. Whites, latinos and every other demographic has not been suckered like those guys.
Seems like that happened recently… Kasim Reed? Only vote for the black folks, cause they know what they are doing.
you all are giving me great suggestions for cartoon topics. if there’s a topic you all have suggested so far that i’m most considering, i’d have to pick nene’s nose.
October 27th, 20101:34 pm
I’ve got one… since you’re going to Afghan… maybe you can do one about Bin Ladin threatening France from his cave and one of his henchmen holding an antenna at the top of the cave with bad reception… ok.. .I’ll just leave it to the professionals.. LOL
October 27th, 20101:36 pm
Guy Incognito,at this point, with polls looking the way they do, i’m sure democrats are wishing such a machine exists.
Mike.. when idiots sound off with their ignorant, hateful messages to you… you seem to have the perfect, sarcastic, honest response… How do you keep your composure..? Some of these idiots make me want to be an idiot too… just for the satisfaction of telling them off.
October 27th, 20101:38 pm
ange, osama’s communicating on a variety of topics. maybe i could do a cartoon of him delivering atlanta traffic updates.
October 27th, 20101:39 pm
How about a cartoon on how Facebook has changed how people are able to share good or bad news. No longer can people personally call and tell relatives about their new baby or engagement because it’s likely that one of their dumb friends will post a “congrats” on their wall before they can personally announce it. Recently, my husband had to call me at work and tell me about the death of a very close relative b/c people were posting condolences on her Facebook wall! somehow I don’t think she got those.
A cartoon about social media in general and how it has changed the news cycle and relationships would be great.
October 27th, 20101:41 pm
How about Atlanta Landmarks trying to kick out Joe Patten a.k.a The Phantom of the Fox out of The Fox Theatre. They had a hearing this morning.
I Made It, thanks for the comment. truthfully, i haven’t gotten too many hateful messages. everyone’s nice. i wish i’d get some hateful ignorant messages. are you hateful, ignorant folks out there listening?
October 27th, 20101:42 pm
Does it count that I hate the ignorant and hateful Sarah Palin?
October 27th, 20101:44 pm
Kfledd, i hope the fox kicks that old guy out and let’s me move in. the free shows and central location would be ideal for me!
October 27th, 20101:45 pm
@KFledd oh dang would that make me ignorant.. b/c she’s an idiot.. but then again.. Bush was elected twice, ran the country into the ground and now they blame Obama for ALL of it…. 8 years to tank a country and in 2 he’s supposed to perform some kind of a miracle… SMH…
October 27th, 20101:46 pm
Ha!! Sadly for you, I think Woody White beat you to that idea.
October 27th, 20101:47 pm
“I did not have sexual relations with THAT panda!”
ML… what about doing one on how American’s want change but no one wants to work hard to get it! Make our president Moses and let him part the green sea of money and make a path to salvation.
Color me stupid, but I didn’t get the last cartoon you drew before you left. The one about the White House being sold by Sotheby’s. Could you explain it to me please? (Use little words and type slowly lol).
As to a suggestion, how about one on Delta being ranked the worst of the major airlines in fees, customer satisfaction and being on time. Delta, if you have to fly real bad, we’ve got a real bad way to fly you, or Delta: We’re not happy until, YOU’RE not happy.
October 27th, 20101:48 pm
elizabeth, social media has changed everything hasn’t it? i’ll think about your topic suggestion althiough i hardly ever look at my facebook page.
October 27th, 20101:51 pm
what do you mean you didn’t understand one of my cartoons?! i was only trying to make a general comment about how anonymous donors funneling record amounts of cash into attack ads are determining who are members of congress are. it’s depressing.
October 27th, 20101:52 pm
CyclopsEye, you’re getting the hang of this job.
October 27th, 20101:53 pm
now if I could just draw!
October 27th, 20101:54 pm
Thanks. I didn’t see it, but then sometimes I’m a tad bit slow……….. and yes, it is depressing.
BTW Bill Clinton and the pregnant panda? I’m laughing all ready. You just ain’t right. I can wait to see that one.
Can i get somehelp interpreting the 10/15 cartoon
October 27th, 20101:57 pm
My proffesor Stone loves you and we’re doing papers on your cartoons
I made It, i don’t think sarah palin is very bright. that’s why the cartoonist in me hopes she runs. i did a cartoon of her recently, in the obama poster style, with “hope” written below. a lady is looking at it and says, “i nbet a cartoonist put that up”…
October 27th, 20101:58 pm
Also Mike, your 14 October ‘toon is an instant classic.
October 27th, 20102:00 pm
LOL.. now that’s a GREAT one.. How did I miss it? I print your cartoons and put them up at the entrance to my office. People stop and read them…
Keep up the amazing job… Even if I don’t understand the cartoon.. you make me want to educate myself on the issues… thank you
alex, you’re professor stone is obviously a gifted and extaordinary human being. thanks for all the great topic suggestions everyone! please join me here next week on wednesday from 1-2pm and we’ll do it all over again!
October 27th, 20102:01 pm
I will be here.. awesome idea to do a blog btw
November 3rd, 20101:01 pm
Curious whether you follow any cartoonists yourself?
November 3rd, 20101:05 pm
i don’t follow other cartoonists that much. i like darby conley who does “get fuzzy.”
November 3rd, 20101:08 pm
Which cartoon did you get the most hate mail over and which one did you get the most supportive mail? Thanks!
How about one on “Big Poppa”?
Steven Q. Stanley
November 3rd, 20101:09 pm
Mike, I have always thought of all the political cartoonist, left, right, and otherwise, you were probably the least talented. You aren’t a great drawer and your cartoons are pretty much all the same.
Most of the 2000s you cartoons were nothing but a sinking ship or a wrecked train withe Iraq written on it and Bush walking away from it. I got the point, and agreed, but wasn’t really that creative the 50th time you did it.
How have you been so successful?
November 3rd, 20101:10 pm
I forgot to write Big Poppa on being Tardy for the Party with the light bill…
November 3rd, 20101:14 pm
Hey Mike, I love your work (even if you aren’t a good “drawer”. I assume that means you don’t hold items like paper clips and rubber bands very well…).
Anyways, my question is a purely professional. What pens, inks, and paper do you use? I know you’ve probably answered this a million times but as a cartoonist myself I am fascinated to know what materials other artists use. Thanks so much and keep up the good work!
i did one concerning u.s. torture comparing u.s. torture to al quaida torture. a u.s. torturer is giving an al quaida torturer a lesson on torture etiquette. readers got very upset. bill o’reilly talked about it and a couple days after the cartoon ran, a local car dealership took out a full page ad denouncing the cartoon. the most supportive mail i got was for the 9/11 cartoon i drew showing the statue of liberty witnessing the planes hitting the wtc with it reflected in her eyes.
I think your toon would’ve been more effective today had it shown the white house as the edifice, and not the capitol
November 3rd, 20101:16 pm
Mike: Have you ever received a note or confirmation that an elected official, be they local, state, or at the national level, glimpsed one of your cartoons, got the message, and set-about to change the direction of their position(s)? Or are they really just too busy, yucking-it-up with campaign financiers, prattling B.S, and uttering sound-bites to effect a quote du-jour?
Steven Q. Stanley, thank you for your comments. today i’m drawing a sinking titanic labeled “democrats.”
Mike, it’s funny that people like Steven consider you a “political cartoonist” aren’t you really more of an “observationalist cartoonist” that draws political cartoons?
November 3rd, 20101:17 pm
Mike – are you surprised by the election results? I knew it would be big, did not expect my entire state to go red in every race.
November 3rd, 20101:18 pm
@Guy – that is dumb. The people leaving are at the Capital not the White House.
November 3rd, 20101:19 pm
How long does it take you to draw a cartoon on average?
iconoclast, i check the mail daily for a note like that. i’ll keep you posted.
November 3rd, 20101:21 pm
rhr, i’m surprised that a guy like nathan deal is going to be our next governor. georgia’s setting the bar pretty low.
November 3rd, 20101:22 pm
i’d like to see a “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX THE ECONOMY!?!?” cartoon in light of the recent elections.
Hi Mike. Love your work. I’ve followed it for as long as I can remember. What is your favorite type of political cartoon to draw. Do you prefer to draw a person as reflection of their character/actions, or do you prefer to draw cartoons based on legislation/current political divisions.
Keep up the great work!
November 3rd, 20101:23 pm
hi Jay Dubbe, specifically, which cartoons in which i “disparage” the troops, are you referring to?
November 3rd, 20101:25 pm
what has been the biggest pleasure of your job
VCC- For What It's Worth
November 3rd, 20101:26 pm
While conservatism is necessary to hold what has been attained in our civilization, it is not from this that advancement comes; rather is it from the idealist, the man too little esteemed by those enthroned, that the impetus is gained which opens the way, not to one, but to many a new world.
-The Real America in Romance, Vol I, Edwin Markham, 1909
Who’s your favorite person to draw and why?
Your welcome Mike, just a little constructive criticism.
I find it funny that many Georgians consider themselves to be “conservative” yet 95% of the state voted for two liberal Democrats, while actual conservative John Monds received less than 5% of the vote. Maybe you should do a cartoon on that.
November 3rd, 20101:27 pm
Hey Mike! I love your work. Unlike some people on here, I notice you play both sides of the fence. It’s easy to use your media outlet to get your own message across, but you don’t do that. You play fair and make fun of the mistakes of all. For that I thank you!
November 3rd, 20101:28 pm
roger, the chicks.
November 3rd, 20101:30 pm
I just hope you won’t offend them with your liberal agenda. You’d be smart considering they are usually heavily armed.
Love your work Mike! Its the very first thing I click on when i log on to ajc.com every morning! Thank you
November 3rd, 20101:31 pm
i like doing cartoons that involve specific politicians and whatever it is they’re doing. i think it makes for funnier cartoons.
November 3rd, 20101:32 pm
Do a cartoon on California’s attempt to legalize marijuana- I’m sure the opponents of it were heavily backed by the drug cartels. Mexico sucks.
What is the motivation of almost always having the wife always being fat and towering over the husband?
When viewing your cartoons I just keep thinking of the world’s worst movie, Norbert.
November 3rd, 20101:33 pm
I think you flat-out suck. I hope you get run over by a bus.
November 3rd, 20101:34 pm
ChrisGT, i do hit both sides. everyone’s human. no party has all the right answers. i have a strong set of beliefs, that occasionally come out in my cartoons, but i also have an open mind and want to keep readers guessing.
‘which cartoons in which i “disparage” the troops, are you referring to?’
August 30,2010 (posted on website August 31) for starters.
November 3rd, 20101:35 pm
Hernando de Soto
I think you are a cheap shot artist. Are you afraid to lampoon the left? I know the truth hurts. You can get plenty of material from George Will if that’s the problem. You were a factor in me dropping the AJC. 25 yr subscriber, yeah, ouch.
November 3rd, 20101:37 pm
Unlike Steven, I think you’re quite talented and frequently enjoy your work. I do wish your political views were a bit more balanced and remain amassed that the paper which employs you, whose editorial board seems so center-left, can exist in such a red state. However, we all have our opinions. Some, such as you, simply have the talent to express them in a creative fashion (nice work if you can get it).
November 3rd, 20101:38 pm
love your question, Tech Man. i make the wife bigger, because i think women are just more advanced than we men . i didn’t think i was making her fat. i’ll slim her down in the future. i usually have her making the more intelligent comments. probablyjust mirroring the situation between my wife and i.
November 3rd, 20101:39 pm
November 3rd, 2010
Either you and I or our wives must be related
I don’t think you really keep us guessing to much Mike. Nearly all of your cartoons poke at conservatives. Once in a blue moon you’ll make fun of liberals. ChrisGT is an idiot
“i like doing cartoons that involve specific politicians and whatever it is they’re doing. i think it makes for funnier cartoons.”
That’s crap Mike and you know it. What percentage of your cartoons poke at the liberal party? I’d say well less than 5%.
Just a short note to show appreciation of your work.
November 3rd, 20101:40 pm
BIOMASS, sometimes after i do a cartoon i’m especially unhappy with, i feel i flat-out suck too.
‘love your question, Tech Man. i make the wife bigger, because i think women are just more advanced than we men . i didn’t think i was making her fat. i’ll slim her down in the future. i usually have her making the more intelligent comments. probablyjust mirroring the situation between my wife and i.’
Thanks for advancing the ‘chickification’ of America by boosting the belief that men are dumber than their wives.
November 3rd, 20101:41 pm
u should draw something on obama calling half the country enemies. you know, the same word he calls muslim terrorists.
What is your favorite cartoon from your work?
November 3rd, 20101:42 pm
go back and look through my archive. it’s got all the cartoons i’ve done this year. you’ll see chrisGT isn’t that big of an idiot.
Why don’t you do a cartoon on the models that the Prez hopes to make us into… France, Greece, etc. Then draw how they are all going bankrupt.
i think we should all be very happy with the elections, we wanted “change and hope” two years ago, and we still do..
actually i guess with the recent election, he referred to 60% of the citizens of this country as enemies.
Mike, I think you’re great, but even if I didn’t, I wouldn’t want you to get run over by a bus. I’ll bet BIOMASS is a Republican who calls himself a Christian. The level of discourse in this state and country has sunk to a new low. Why do you think that is, and why do you think Georgians have set the bar so low with the governor and lt. governor?
November 3rd, 20101:43 pm
How about a cartoon about how angry conservative bloggers are never happy even after they won…
you could draw a photo of al queda and bo saying enemies..then show john boehner and another repub and he says you too. but that wouldn’t be nice to bo right?
November 3rd, 20101:45 pm
or you could draw one of chris with his gt sign that says loser.
vt blows out the yeckets again.
November 3rd, 20101:46 pm
i’m a little young to remember, but what exactly did Reagan do to turn the mess around that he inherited? maybe you do a cartoon of Obama looking at what Reagan did saying “it’s time that we learn from history”..
DK, have you checked out the ajc in the last couple years? the editorial and opinion pages have equal numbers of liberal and conservative columnists. the ajc also has a stable of conservative syndicated cartoonists.
can you do a cartoon about the atlanta falcons?
November 3rd, 20101:47 pm
Are you a paid member of Obama’s staff, or is your loyalty to him (and all things Democratic Party) such that you are willing to forego all objectivity as a paid journalist?
I’ll hang up and wait for your response.
have you done one on the Obama comment about Repubs being in the back seat??
November 3rd, 20101:48 pm
thanks everybody for your questions and/or insults. i’ve gotta go. i’ll be back 2 wednesdays from now. i hope you all come back.
“the editorial and opinion pages have equal numbers of liberal and conservative columnists. the ajc also has a stable of conservative syndicated cartoonists.”
i hope someone handles your fiances cuz u suck at addition.
November 3rd, 20101:49 pm
Your isn’t that good either CJ since splitting percentages would be division not addition…
November 16th, 20106:41 pm
Thanks Mike, I’m sure you represented well. I love your toons.

Well Done Luckovich. Much respect to someone who is willing to visit our troops while they are in harms way.
November 16th, 20108:22 pm
In memory of my father, a WWII master sergeant in the Army-Air Force, I would like to say “Thank you” to Mike Luckovich for visiting our troops in Afghanistan.
November 16th, 20108:30 pm
Wow, that’s an impressive line-up – thank you for visiting our troops! This is just awesome! Thank you!
November 16th, 20109:28 pm
Thanks for doing this, Mike. It doesn’t matter what your views are of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan; what we should all be united behind is support for our troops and as Mike wrote on the bomb shelter wall, bringing them home soon.
November 16th, 20109:45 pm
Thanks for the great photos Mike, and thanks for visiting our troops!
Emory D. Christian
November 16th, 201011:42 pm
Afghanistan is located in Asia. No doubt your visit was a great moral booster for these brave women and men. Thank you
November 17th, 20102:45 am
Mike, thank you very much for visiting our troops in Afghanistan. When the Georgia National Guard’s 48th Brigade left in 2005 for Iraq, the AJC sent a journalist and a photographer along to keep us abreast of what was happening with our guys. When the 48th Brigade left for Afghanistan in 2009, I called the AJC to find out when we could expect to see articles in the paper. I was told there would be no articles as no one cared about the war anymore! I agree with what “A” said above that we should be united in supporting our troops! Thanks again Mike!

November 17th, 201012:34 pm
hi everybody. i’m here waiting for your questions
November 17th, 201012:37 pm
thank you for taking the time to visit with the troops.
However, why are all your cartoons pro democrats?
November 17th, 201012:39 pm
were you and your party well received in Afghanistan?
Do the troops give their opinion on their new Commander in Chief? What are they saying about Obama?
November 17th, 201012:40 pm
hi former liberal
look at my archive. i hit obama and the democrats too.
Thanks for all that you do. Is there any specific topic that you enjoy drawing about the most?
November 17th, 201012:41 pm
politics never came up. i was there not as a democrat or republican, but as an american.
November 17th, 201012:43 pm
good question. i’m thinking. i like cartoons where i can draw specific people/politicians. i like caricature. all topics interest me
November 17th, 201012:44 pm
Thank you for your insight, especially about your feelings as that coffin with the American flag went by you. Question- Do you really feel that Afghanistan soldiers are forgotten among most Americans?
November 17th, 201012:46 pm
hankie, yes, i do think that after almost a decade in afghanistan, most americans aren’t focused on the sacrifices our troops are making. during the midterms, polls showed the war ranked way down the list of what most americans were concerned about.
November 17th, 201012:47 pm
I certainly feel to an extent that they are forgotten. I feel that it might be a war that has no end really.
What’s your current stance on the Iraq and Afghan wars? If you’re against them, do you fully understand the ramifications of quitting?
November 17th, 201012:48 pm
Mike – I was in Afghanistan in the spring. I guess you were in KAF, did you get to any other bases? Is the Friday’s still open in KAF, it was kind of sureal to me, once inside you could have been in ATL. Does the poop pond still stink?
If I could ask 1 more- Do you think that is right or wrong to feel that way? (the war being way down on the list of what Americans are concerned about)
November 17th, 201012:52 pm
hi lydiasdad, great question. i’ve always felt the iraq war was one of america’s biggest foreign policy blunders ever. instead of focusing on afghanistan and al qaida who attacked us, we diverted our resources to iraq.we’ve increased iran’s influence and have made it very hard to have a successful outcome in afghanistan. i’m not exactly sure why we’re in afghanistan niow. is it to keep al qaida out? there are few al qaida tleft in afghanistan.. most are in pakistan.
Out of Town
November 17th, 201012:54 pm
Do you draw 3-4 cartoons per day and then pick your favorite or do you start one and go with it?
What media sources are your “guilty pleasures” that you read/watch to get ideas for your cartoons?
November 17th, 201012:55 pm
Dear “Jane Fonda” Lukuvichwiczstienbaumberg,
If I was a soldier I’d spit in your liberal douchebag face.
November 17th, 201012:56 pm
roy, are you a service member? i ate at the Friday’s there on the boardwalk. it’s surreal because inside it’s like any other Friday’s in the states and yes, the “poop pond” as it’s called, which is a lake size pond where all the sewage goes smells really bad. when the wind blows a certain direction, the entire base can smell it.
That was nice of you to go over there and do that. You pictures were interesting.
How long have you been doing cartoons? Did you learn how to do cartoons on your own or did someone teach you?
My son likes to draw cartoons and has taken classes. Just curious.
November 17th, 201012:57 pm
out of town, you’re exactly right. i come up and draw 3-4 rough sketches, sometimes more before deciding what i’m going to do.
November 17th, 201012:59 pm
menotyou, how’d you know my middle name?
November 17th, 20101:00 pm
Mike – no, went over as a contractor, work for a local technical university in the research area. I was there about 6 weeks, but only 5-6 days at KAF. It was interesting because of the international presence, I liked the different chow halls. Did you get to any of the samller FOBs, lfe is much difdferent for our service members there. No matter what your opinion of the war you can’t visit our people serving there and not come back proud to be an American.
Looks to me that ML is doing more for the troops than most people…probably including you.
November 17th, 20101:01 pm
cyanbane, the ajc, ny times, andrew sullivan’s blog, joe klein at time. i also read my colleague jay bookman’s blog.
November 17th, 20101:02 pm
Hi Mike, I just want you to know that your talent, wit, charm and especially most of the opinions that you express make you a hero of sorts to me. Any books in the future?
November 17th, 20101:05 pm
I’m a big fan. I like to share some of your cartoons with my friends, usually at least once a week. I especially like that you are an “equal opportunity offender”! My question is where you get your ideas from — seems like it would be hard to come up with a new funny idea every day — and then draw it.
roy, you’re right. i visited smaller foward operating bases called FOBS. one was nathan smith, the other camp lagmon. the troops were happy that we visited and we were glad to be able to draw for them.
November 17th, 20101:07 pm
avdrdr, thanks for your kind words. i’m sure there will be books, but nothing imminent.
Call it like it is
Mike, how are our soliders. Do they feel like they are fighting the good fight, or a losing battle and they are ready to come home?
November 17th, 20101:08 pm
are there any political cartoonists who only draw for the net/blogs (no physical circulation) that you are impressed with?
November 17th, 20101:09 pm
Adrian thanks for reading my cartoons. i get my ideas first by procrastinating until it gets close to my deadline and then panicking as i run out of time. that seems to be the best way for my mind to focus.
Billy (not William)
November 17th, 20101:10 pm
Mike, who were your influences coming up or which comics, writers, others influenced your work? Or are you just a one-of-a-kind?
November 17th, 20101:13 pm
Call it like it is, good question. i was there to draw for them and listen to their stories. it was light and fun for them, so i didn’t think it would be appropriate to get into anything too deep, however, a uso volunteer said that many troops told her they felt abandoned. many ogf these troops are on their 4th or 5th tour.
Come on, Mike. Who do you think you are fooling here? 99.9% of your cartoons are anti-”pub” …you just can’t help yourself.
November 17th, 20101:14 pm
Mike I know you state your an equal opportunity artist, in regards to hitting on the right and left, but it does seem that you pick on the right a little bit more. Would you say thats just perception or do you really feel that your objective in your works?
Also in regards to the cartoonists you went with, what was their opinion on the war? Good works, nothing will come from it?
November 17th, 20101:15 pm
cyanbane, there’s a guy named matt bors who has a website. i like his stuff. i’m sure you could google him.
Lucko the scumbag
November 17th, 20101:16 pm
Spare us your liberal agenda. 75% of doctors across the country are expected to refuse to see medicare patients forever thanks to Obama/Reid/Pelosi cutting reimbursement by 23%. Hope your mom ain’t sick. Stand up for something you doofus.
Tuna, i confess, you’re right. but what does “pub” mean?
November 17th, 20101:17 pm
hi Lucko the scumbag, hey, that was my nickname in high school! where do you get your “fun” facts?
November 17th, 20101:18 pm
One more Mike and I will leave you alone. What can American citizens do to let those guys know we still care, and they are not forgotten. Is there anything they need, letters, care packages…
November 17th, 20101:20 pm
Any cartoons planned about the current ethics complaints filed against Perdue?
What was it like hanging out with Gary Trudeau?
November 17th, 20101:21 pm
Mike, as the father of a Marine (in a safe place) I thank you for going over. The statement that many say they feel abandoned breaks my heart.
Mike, the AJC subscriptions have continued to plumet. Georgia is a very “red” state, and yet the paper has clung to what is reasonably described as a very liberal perspective. Your cartoons are largely left-leaning. It’s fine because that is who you are, but it is not who your audience is. Why the disconnect with the paper and its readers?
Call it like it is, good question. unlike someone like a jay leno, editorial cartoonists are supposed to have an opinion. my political views are complicated, but i believe in looking out for the little guy as opposed to the rich, so i’m more of a democrat on most issues.
believe it or not, we cartoonists didn’t have discussions about the war. our focus was to be there for the troops.
November 17th, 20101:22 pm
I’m a deployed AF pilot here at Kandahar and I hate I missed you! But on behalf of all of us here, thanks for coming! Anything that boosts morale is a plus over here. I’m off to go fly now, but I just wanted to drop you a line. Glad you made it back safe!
Mike, I really love your cartoons. I think the AJC is very lucky to have you on board. To all of the people who whine about the liberal viewpoints – It’s not his fault they are the right ones.
November 17th, 20101:23 pm
I just wanted to say that although I do not always agree with your take, I find your caroons funny, as well as informed. Thanks for brightening the week of the troops and our days!
November 17th, 20101:25 pm
Stephen, garry is a chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, alcoholic, flatuent racist. actually, it was fun because he’s such a nice unassuming person.
I don’t have a question. I just wanted to say that I always enjoy the cartoons and keep up the good work.
November 17th, 20101:26 pm
Hi Mike, Long time Reader, first time question asker. I am a student at GSU and have been Drawing and publishing comics in the schools paper for about a year, occasionally I will have one that I would like other papers to consider, how would I go about it, and being a student, is there any form of compensation.
November 17th, 20101:27 pm
Brandon, thanks for your email and thanks for what you’re doing. hopefully, next year, you’ll be home, but if you’re still there, i intend to come back, so you’ll be the first soldier i’ll draw! stay safe.
November 17th, 20101:28 pm
It’s not the AJC’s fault that Atlanta is located in the center of a bunch of gun-toting, uneducated hicks that vote however Sean Hannity tells them to vote. There are plenty of educated, intelligent people to sell papers to here in Atlanta.
November 17th, 20101:30 pm
GSUstudent, my daughter’s a freshman there. i’ll be there friday. good question. if i were you, i’d try the athens paper. show the editor samples and say you’ll do an occasional cartoon for them. they may even pay you!
Mike, do you think the NBA, NFL and MLB are racist? If not, how do you account for the high percentage of non-white athletes? Are you going to gin up a coupla good strips to take on the racists there?
P.S. Gary Trudeau lost my vote when he married Jane Pauley.
November 17th, 20101:33 pm
One more question: do you ever get angry phone calls or emails from any of the people you zing — like Mark Richt or Sonny Perdue? How do you handle those?
November 17th, 20101:35 pm
Mike – Are you planning on retiring soon? I hope so, then Atlanta could possibly attract someone like Cinci’s Borganman who is talented, insightful and actually has a sense of humor. But keep up the mediocrity! Cheers – Bob
I have a concept for a comic about the Hope Scholarship that you are welcome to take or leave. (no charge)
November 17th, 20101:36 pm
boots, newspapers, whether right or left, have seen print circulation drops, due to the internet. overall readership has sky-rocketed if you take into account internet circulation. i’m not sure in metro atlanta, what the democrat/republican percentages are, but if you’ve been reading the ajc the last few years you’d see that we have equal numbers of left and right-leaning columnists, plus at least 3 right-wing cartoonists that appear on the op/ed pages on different days of the week.
November 17th, 20101:38 pm
bawb, i’m glad my lack of talent is appreciated. borgman has quit editorial cartooning to focus on drawing the “zits” comic strip.
November 17th, 20101:40 pm
GSUstudent, thank you, but i have this thing where i have to come up with my own ideas no matter how mediocre.(see bawb’s post)
November 17th, 20101:41 pm
Our church is organizing sending “presents” to the troops.
Were there any items you saw that were needed more than others? We really need help in selecting what to send.
November 17th, 20101:42 pm
Sean, thank you for reading me. also, someone, i think, mentioned earlier, that they don’t always agree with me, but like the humor and continue to read me. i appreciate that too.
November 17th, 20101:43 pm
ahahahahahaha, ya maybe I should not be asking you for advice.
November 17th, 20101:45 pm
Tech Man, that’s a beautiful thing your church is doing. cox, my parent company, has been doing that for a while now. i’m not sure what they need except maybe things they can enjoy like candy, letters…
Please tell the powers that be that I enjoy the new “local” sections. Maybe you could publish some “local” cartoons there to help them out?
November 17th, 20101:46 pm
November 17th, 2010
Thanks! Sweet tooths, we know how to help with that.
What do they talk about
What are some topics that you are drawing that are being requested or talked about by our troops?
November 17th, 20101:48 pm
Tech Man, i’ll pass that on. i do local stuff, but it stays on the editorial page. uga has been good for topics this year. by the way, does anyone have a good topic for me today/ i was thinking about doing something on sarah palin’s reality show or charles rangel.
November 17th, 20101:49 pm
What do they talk about, i didn’t get any topics from the troops. i was so focused on drawing them and thanking them, i never asked.
November 17th, 20101:50 pm
WOW, I’m shocked Code Pink gave you permission to go over there Mike.
Rangel sitting in a lounge chair, drink in hand, with piles of money underneath, on his beach front estate on the islands telling the IRS he forgot about it.
November 17th, 20101:51 pm
It looks like everyone is talking about Bristol Palin on Dancing with the Stars.
Maybe something on the Palin’s needing to start their own network?
How about a cartoon about the FDA taking the caffeine out of Four Loko, tying it in to the Republicans’ efforts to block Obama’s agenda.
November 17th, 20101:53 pm
crap,Call it like it is, that’s a good idea! unfortunately, i have to use my own ideas. you can’t draw can you?
Hi Mike and Thanks
I must say you are non partisan when it comes to your cartoons, I LOVE IT
Mike – Couldn’t resist the jab but seriously, keep it up – creating drawings that is…(I don’t always appreciate your leanings though). Thanks for supporting the troops! All the best!
Maybe something on troops receiving mail/gifts from America and how much they appreciate it?
Why do some cartoonist only
November 17th, 20101:54 pm
Hi again, why do some cartoonist (like the Augusta Chronicle) only target Democrats? I mean there is ENOUGH to depict out there, why focus on ONE group, he’s so negative ALL THE TIME.
It would prompt us to get things to them in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am sure it takes a while for things to get there.
Tech Man, an all-palin channel’s coming.
November 17th, 20101:55 pm
An idea for the aspiring cartoonist is to look up newspapers in Georgia. I am sure there are some local weeklys, etc that are looking to fill space.
November 17th, 20101:57 pm
Any cartoons planned about the guilty verdict against Rangel?
Bawb, thanks for reading me. i hope you come back next wednesday from 1-2 when i’ll have another of these informative life-changing chats. thanks to all of you for your questions. talk to you next wednesday.
Tech Man, go to AnySoldier dot com or AnyMarine dot com. They have specific requests for different items.
“Thanks” to you and your church!
I'm glad you depict
November 17th, 20101:58 pm
Hi I refer your cartoons to the Augusta Chronicle cartoonist all the time. He only does negative post about Democrats and Progressives. Unlike you, you depict everybody and everything. I usually tell him to catch up.
Maybe something about the new divide on ear marks. Finally something that brings democrats and republicans together, in two opposing groups.
ps, check tomorrow’s ajc or ajc online to see sketches done in afghanistan by the other cartoonists i was with.
November 17th, 20101:59 pm
How about Mrs. Obama winning DWTS? I loved her dance with the Indian girls.
December 1st, 20101:04 pm
Hello. I did not understand the Pope cartoon. I was wondering what you meant by it.
December 1st, 20101:06 pm
Loved the Pope cartoon. Your take was at least as clear as his position…
December 1st, 20101:07 pm
haha, the Pope spent last week talking about when condoms were appropriate. it was a silly cartoon, but i thought it was funny.
December 1st, 20101:09 pm
thanks cissy. i’m Catholic and if the Pope makes news, it’s fun to put him in a cartoon
December 1st, 20101:14 pm
Loved the Santa Corp. cartoon. How true.
December 1st, 20101:15 pm
If the Wikileaks guy gets a single one of our serviceman or citizens overseas killed- we should treat him as a terrorist. Do one on that.
December 1st, 20101:17 pm
good point canada dry
Seel voo play
Do a cartoon with Bookman and Tucker in it- trying so hard to tell everyone that Obama’s doing great work… but still hasn’t created any jobs.
December 1st, 20101:18 pm
thank you rush cheney. i’ll be doing more on that subject.
December 1st, 20101:20 pm
Mike, love your work. Clearly you have to have thick skin to put your work out there for others to judge and potentially attack you over. How sensitive are you to the criticism? Did it ever hurt, or does it still?
seel voo play, i attempted to, but bookman started to choke me.
December 1st, 20101:22 pm
hi tom, what a great question. the criticism i’m most sensitive to is from my wife. if she doesn’t like a cartoon, it ruins my night. criticism from others is fine. if i can dish it out, i should be able to take it.
December 1st, 20101:23 pm
Thanks for taking the time to visit with and draw our service men and women serving overseas. Really enjoyed your “coin.”
December 1st, 20101:24 pm
I hope you make cartoon regarding how congress is ignoring the unemployment issue. They just don’t get it.
December 1st, 20101:26 pm
hi rickster, it was an honor for me to talk to them and draw them. i hope to go back. i’m glad you liked my coin.
December 1st, 20101:27 pm
ronnie, it’s on my list. it’s depressing to me. republicans want to keep tax cuts for the rich, while cutting off unemployment benefits to the jobless. i don’t get it.
December 1st, 20101:29 pm
Hopefully you’ll have your own coin made up… featuring the couple (Ev & Flo?)
December 1st, 20101:30 pm
I showed up because it said “Lunch with Luckovich” and I was wondering if you’re buying at Buckhead Diner or Ruth Chris. I don’t want to go to the wrong place, even if I’m 30 mins late.
p.s. Can you do cartoon rendition of Jeff Schultz for me as a Christmas gift? Or do you think drawing a cartoon of him would look too much like an actual portrait in his case.
December 1st, 20101:32 pm
I loved Trudeau’s “Lighting up the bad guys…” BD coin.
December 1st, 20101:33 pm
what rickster is referring to are “command coins.” they are given usually by officers to service members for doing something outstanding. they often have the unit’s insignia on them. when i was in afghanistan, a couple cartoonists did have their own coins, so next time, i may get some made. it makes the luggage much heavier though.
December 1st, 20101:36 pm
I like to GOP “We Promised Nothing” cartoon. Right on point.
Mike, if you go to RangerJoes.com, you can find LOTS Army coins. There’s one called “Army Values” that would be a big hit with the men & women over there if you handed those out.
As a fan of your work, just want to say thank you for what you do. You consistently make me laugh. Of recent, I loved the Sarah Palin/press “Who’s chasing who” cartoon and the cartoon about burning the Koran where you pointed out that there are extremists EVERYWHERE…not just in the Middle east.
December 1st, 20101:37 pm
There are also what are called “Challenge Coins.” If members of the military run into each other at a local watering hole, and one pulls out a challenge coin, and the other doesn’t… loser buys.
hi ted striker
go to buckhead diner. order whatever you want. when the check comes, tell them a cartoonist told you you don’t have to pay.
December 1st, 20101:38 pm
Do a cartoon w the Dem’s taxing the job creators and then explaining to their clueless voters why there still aren’t any jobs.
Gold Mike! Gold!
December 1st, 20101:40 pm
thank you KC! i’m glad you like my cartoons. a couple weeks ago, someone commented they wish i’d get run over by a bus. i interpreted that to mean they didn’t like my caroons.
Someday you people will have to explain to me the backwards idea that the government just haphazardly spends itself into oblivion you always think the answer is raising taxes to keep up with it.
Stop the spending or slow it down. Every family in America does it to balance their own budget. Except the Democrats, they just scream at people to give them more. What the he L L?? We’re running out of money? Steal it from the people! Call it taxes! How dare they oppose this genius thinking!!!
December 1st, 20101:42 pm
I love your cartoon that uses DC “superhero’s to make a political point, My favorite is “You always do that when Bush come on” Hulk, is in this cartoon. What inspired you to do this.
What particular topic inspires you the most before you draw?
Love your cartoons!
guy incognito, you’re right! i pay a kid to mow my lawn, i’m a job creator! i shouldn’t have to pay taxes!
If all men are created equal… why don’t we tax them that way?
If you raise taxes on one, raise them on the others. Treat everyone fairly.
December 1st, 20101:43 pm
Mike.. other than the one guy with the pieces of shrapnel he kept in a bag by his hospital bed… any other GI really make an impression on you?
December 1st, 20101:44 pm
Mike, your cartoons are fantastic and I love starting my with them! It’s so hard to pick a favorite, but I think that my most-recent favorite is the one with the voter gearing up for 2012! (With the recent bizarre news of the GOP wanting to extend the tax cuts but not fund unemployment assistance, I’m absolutely baffled and wondering if not helping the unemployed could create a double-dip recession…)
December 1st, 20101:46 pm
Oops! I meant to say that I start my *day* with them.
December 1st, 20101:47 pm
amongst recent presidents, w was the all-time big spender and for most of his presidency, congress was republican.
Stick and Move
December 1st, 20101:49 pm
Democrats can take all the credit for trying to raise taxes on the rich.
Penalize the folks that offer us jobs. Yeah, that will create some more jobs.
The Democratic Party. Crushing the Drive to Succeed Since 1776.
Cindy, the GOP isn’t cutting off unemployment benefits. They just don’t want to borrow money to pay them. Surely in a 2+ TRILLION budget there should be something they could cut to fund unemployment benefits.
It’s called “Pay As You Go” (PAYGO) – and the Dems have been ignoring it for years now.
December 1st, 20101:50 pm
rickster, i met a soldier in khandahar. i could tell he was having issues. his eyes had what’s called a “thousand yard stare.” i hope he gets help.
You mean you think W spent more than Obama? Might want to recheck your numbers.
December 1st, 20101:51 pm
What I appreciate most about your columns is that you employ humor/satire judiciously yet you aren’t married to them since some sentiments and issues need a different face.
You’re your own guy but I see some definite Mort Drucker in you.
I really enjoy your political cartoons! They are so easy to understand! When I was young I had a civics class in the 9th grade and we had to cut out political cartoons to discuss in class, but they were sooooo hard to understand! It wasn’t like I didn’t know of some of what was going on in the world from reading the newspaper and watching 60 Minutes every Sunday with my mother current events were important. So, thanks again for making them really easy to understand!
December 1st, 20101:54 pm
Sadly…. a lot of them do Mike.
i try very hard to make them understandable. i choose issues readers are familiar with to draw cartoons on.
Hootinanny Yum Yum
December 1st, 20101:58 pm
Generally think to lean a little too far to the left for my taste, but as a retired vet I appreciate you taking the time to visit the troops.
Why is Charlie Brown standing on the end table with a lampshade on his head in yesterday’s cartoon?
Ted Striker, mort drucker is one of my heroes. he was the cartoonist i tried to copy when i was in junior high school. i’ve gotten to know him over the years. he’s a very sweet person. you’ve got a good eye to notice his influence in my work.
December 1st, 20102:00 pm
funny comment about charlie brown, Hootinanny Yum Yum. i did that on purpose. thanks for reading me despite not agreeing with me.
December 1st, 20102:02 pm
everybody, i’ve got to come up with an idea, so i’m signing off. i’ll be back next wednesday at 1 pm. thanks for the great questions and comments.
December 8th, 20101:00 pm
hello everyone. any comments or questions?
December 8th, 20101:01 pm
Maybe an Idea for the future:
Obama, “Spare Change you can believe in”
Love ya,keep up the great work
December 8th, 20101:02 pm
You have one of the few Twitter accounts that I follow. You cartoons are great. Hope you consider this a complement but the only one that ever compared to you was Oliphant
December 8th, 20101:05 pm
david, i do consider that a compliment. thank you. there doesn’t seem to be much going on today. any topic suggestions? one topic i’m thinking about is georgia’s new governor is calling for more cuts in education, but wants to lower corporate taxes by a third.
December 8th, 20101:07 pm
good idea, rick price.
Hi and thanks
December 8th, 20101:09 pm
Your work is so non partisan, I love it.
December 8th, 20101:11 pm
Would love to see your take sometime on the pendulum nature of politics/government in the U.S. We swing back and forth, seemingly unable to find a satisfactory home. I find your work exceptionally poignant and on-target.
One other thing
,I sure do miss your wonderful doodles of Bush,Chaney &”Rummy”kind of like Ralph Steadman and Nixon, gone but not forgotten
hi and thanks, you wouldn’t believe how many think otherwise.
Do you have a book of your work
I bought Clyde Wells (retired cartoonist) from the Augusta Chronicle umbrella etc, is any of your work for sale now?
December 8th, 20101:12 pm
thank you, Somewhat, you all are being too nice to me today.
December 8th, 20101:13 pm
I look forward to seeing your cartoons, are you up for any 2010 awards?
December 8th, 20101:14 pm
Mike, Are there ever opportunities to meet you in person, such as meet/greets
at the AJC or your office, or……..
i have a book called “four more wars” that came out a few years ago. i think it’s available at amamzon.com. i also sell my originals.
Mike, do you ever think of political correctness or if majority of audience will appreciate your work. Do you go by how you feel in he morning. If that’s the case, your life must be miserable from 00 – 08
December 8th, 20101:15 pm
I moved from Augusta, GA to Northern VA I read the AJC Daily going and coming, I don’t read the local papers here…
December 8th, 20101:16 pm
Not me…Hi and thanks, should be Thanks I’m high!!!
Mike did you show any of the troops, your cartoon a few years back comparing them to terrorist?
steve, i try and avoid human beings, but occasionally i give speeches around town. a couple weeks ago, i gave one at uga. next time i’m going to give a speech, i’ll mention it here.
I noticed that there weren’t any ethnic minorities in your cartoon crowd today. Do you really think that your drawing represents his base? Seems like you and the Brinks/Broadview security people who cast their commercials with ONLY white males breaking in to houses, are “peas in the liberal pod.”
December 8th, 20101:17 pm
When you see other cartoonist who LEAN only one way in their drawings (ie the Augusta Chronicle cartoonist) *GAGS* what do you think?
December 8th, 20101:19 pm
How on Earth did you ever win a Pulitzer? To be honest, and in my opinion, you’re not very funny and your humor is pretty shallow. You seem to always hit on the same subjects. After reading a few of your cartoons, I can see your punchlines coming from miles away. Very formulaic. Not too original.
But, Merry Christmas anyway!
ramble on, that cartoon didn’t show a u.s. soldier, it showed someone in a hood, labeled “america.” it wasn’t aimed at the troops who follow orders, it was aimed at our country and what we were allowing to happen in our name, at the behest of our leaders.
December 8th, 20101:20 pm
Guy Incognito, look again, the two ladies nearest the white house are african-american.
Hello Mike. My favorite entry from you ran on July 28, 2009 (Pres. Obama, Prof. Gates, and Sgt. Crowley). It made me laugh at a situation that unfortunately got out of hand very quickly. By the way, your drawing of the President is spot on. His ears are really that big.
Is there any subject or person you consider off limits?
December 8th, 20101:21 pm
Roekest, i wonder the same thing too.
Rick do you have final say in what will be printed? is anything ever to bad or controversial that they will not let you print? in other words, do you go to the editor first with your drawnings and when it’s approved you submit them?
December 8th, 20101:23 pm
Electric, thank you and no. i do love drawing obama.
December 8th, 20101:25 pm
I wonder why no one drew Rush Limbaugh with money falling out of his pockets with a cigar in his mouth, and a dumpster on his shoulder smiling and in the background scrambling to find food. Do you get more hate mail when you target specific people, like the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck (just to name a few).
December 8th, 20101:26 pm
I wonder why no one drew Rush Limbaugh with money falling out of his pockets with a cigar in his mouth, and a dumpster on his shoulder smiling and in the background CHILDREN scrambling to find food. Do you get more hate mail when you target specific people, like the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck (just to name a few).
Sorry for the repost but I left off CHILDREN
Arlington VA , since you called me “Rick”, i’m going to call you “richmond”va. i have to show my rough idea to an editor before i draw the final. they let me do mostly what i want, but they’ve also saved me from doing something that could be misinterpreted.
December 8th, 20101:28 pm
How about the subject of politicians changing party after the election?
December 8th, 20101:29 pm
great question, Arlington VA, i mean, Richmond. folks get very upset if i do a cartoon on sarah palin or rush, which strikes me as weird, because those two freely criticize others.
Mike, are you amazed or jealous at how great Michael Ramirez is?
December 8th, 20101:31 pm
good topic, Ronald Foust. some democrats are thinking that after the tax cut compromise, maybe obama did that.
December 8th, 20101:32 pm
Mike, what is your opinion on the most important issue or issues facing the metro Atlanta community over the next few years? Thanks and keep doing what you’re doing.
I remember one of your cartoons where Sonny Purdue had someone holding a sign that pointed to him saying “I’m with stupid”. It was briefly on the website but quickly disappeared. Can you say what happened?
December 8th, 20101:33 pm
RAMBLE ON!!! i’m amazed! no, wait. i’m jealous! actually, i’m amazingly jealous!
ooops sorry Mike for calling you he who’s name should not be mention LOL, Rick from the augusta chronicle (worse cartoonist ever) IMO. And thanks for answering the question.
Maybe you should do a Newt one tomorrow with Pearl Harbor as the them and books flying off the shelf LOL, and his eyes made up like Dollar signs… LOL… Your work is some of the best.
December 8th, 20101:34 pm
Hey Mike, I truly like your work because almost always it is right on target. I would like to see more that exposes the misguided government people who seem to be running our country deeper into poverty and economic ruin. One such matter is why don’t some of these Political Brains can’t come up with the idea to try to get some of the outsourced jobs back to lower the unemployment rate in America. Keep up the good work…..
December 8th, 20101:35 pm
The governor’s race was a lose-lose situation for the state of GA. Nathan will gut us like a deer in the king’s forrest. Let’s hope we catch him at it and can stop him before he takes it all.
mike b, these issues sound boring, because they seemingly never go away, but improving transportation, water, education and intelligently managing atlanta’s growth.
December 8th, 20101:37 pm
Luckovich, you’re just another left wing hack in the mold of Bookman-Tucker. Now wonder you’re losing subscribers/readers.
Are you up for any awards for 2010? if so which? and who are the other contenders?
what you talkin bout jerry?
December 8th, 20101:38 pm
Funny Jerry if anything he’s GAINING subscribers/readers. Mike is one of the best cartoonist in the US, I say keep up the good work. I look forward to his truthful drawings.
December 8th, 20101:39 pm
Bless your heart, M’uck. How could anyone tell? Admit that you will not draw a minority (other than gender) with discernable features because you fear the backlash.
I’ll leave you with your sheep now, but thank you for taking time to help me try and understand the thinkings of a far left liberal.
Ouch, my head hurts.
Mike – WIll the newspaper business exist in five years, or ten? Do you see a dramatic rise in local govt/political corruption as local media outlets (like newspapers and broadcast tv) continue to fall further and further down the consumers value chain in terms of where they receive their news?
December 8th, 20101:40 pm
Carol Lingerfelt, if you’re a republican in georgia, you can be dumb and corrupt and still get elected.
for you to say you’re not biased is a complete joke. 5-1 your drawings are pro left leaning ideas.
give it a rest and quit bs’ing people.
Mike, were things always so polarized? I’m young(er) so I have no real perspective.
Seems like the word ‘moderate’ is a dirty one these days. I’m moderate with my children, my spouse, my work, my friends, and my habits- so why doesn’t that work everywhere else?
Woot. I almost missed the lunch again. But I forgot what I wanted to ask about last week……..
Mike–I love your cartoons and the often subtlety you include that require some additional thinking. Was there any one topic from the past that you could have drawn a cartoon on a daily basis more than any other?
BTW, the Bill Clinton/Chelsea’s bridesmaid was my favorite from this year!
carter is a fool
December 8th, 20101:41 pm
Most often your cartoons express pure hatred for those that do not hold a liberal view of the world. They show nothing of the world view portrayed by a talented cartoonist – Michael Ramirez. You should study his view on the world and adopt a more balanced view of the world and learn from his great skill and keen wit. This would certainly improve your long standing Bush Bashing and Republican Hating scribbles.
Mike *BRACE YOURSELF* this is a race question. Do you get more hate filled emails from whites, black or latinos? What’s the general make up.
December 8th, 20101:43 pm
Guy Incognito, just for you, for now on when i draw a white person, i’ll label them “white” and when i draw a black person, i’ll label them “black.”
i rest my case with your last comment. you’re a little weanie whiny liberal. yeah liberals are a bastion of ethics!! how many tax cheats did obama hire? how about rangel?
your inane posts suggets that dems in georgia are clean, ehtical and moral haha.
you’re pathetic man.
Thanks for making me smile! Your talent is great!
Please focus on education. Do comps on countries–
we are going backwards—cutting our children short
in every way.
1) How often do you receive an inspiration about a week past the “shelf” date for topic? I imagine that would be frustrating.
2) Any young(er) — I’m good like that — cartoonists presently flying under the radar that you think are talented and might receive a bigger stage later?
December 8th, 20101:44 pm
@carter is a fool.
If you’re accusing Lukovich of ‘pure hatred’ then you have no idea, nor have experienced, what “pure hatred” means.
If you toss such phrases around casually don’t expect anyone to take you seriously.

Hayseed Dixie, good comment. things weren’t always so polorized. it’s complicated why things have changed. one of the politicians who had the most to do with dehumanizing the opposition was newt gingrich. he’s a crappy human being.
Thank you. These are good issues. Re water, I often wonder if these issues are trumped up…in order to justify $4B sewer expansions and the like. Are you confident in the governance surrounding this particular project? I’m afraid I’m not.
December 8th, 20101:47 pm
And if your a liberal, the ajc and it’s liberal writers will lie and distort to make the liberal look better than the conservative. Go move to the left coast loser.
Then when California goes BK from it’s hideous liberal policies, you can still blame conservatives!
Mr. Get Real
December 8th, 20101:48 pm
Mr. Mike: I’ve always been fascinated that US citizens give so much credibility to a Hollywood actor when they speak on an issue, political or otherwise. How can we believe them when we know there’s a high probability they’re doing what they do best — acting. How about using your amazing talents to help us Get Real and think through these issues for ourselves, or instead take recommendations from those who truly understand the topic(s).
December 8th, 20101:49 pm
This dude Guy Incognito is what you call a “Cyber-Thug”. Tough guy behind the keyboard, a punk in person.
December 8th, 20101:50 pm
newt?a crappy human being. and i guess pelosi is just great huh? what about mckinney. bet ya love her don’t ya? you’re a friggin loser man. a typical whiney liberal. wah wah those mean evil republicans. yeah things are so great under obama! 10% unemployment after spending 800 BILLION in stimulus!! What a prezbo! Vote out the socialists and keep idiots like Mike from ruining this country.
December 8th, 20101:51 pm
Hey Mike, if you take Bob’s advise and move to the left coast, would you put in a good word for me for your job? I can’t draw and I’m not very funny, but I could do a stick figure with the caption “Obama Sucks” everyday and Bob and Hill and carter is a fool could write me letters and tell me how “great” I am……
December 8th, 20101:52 pm
Ted Striker, i don’t look back. i try to stay current.
Booker T. and The OMGs
I always like your “obituary” cartoons. I think I remember you drawing Lewis Grizzard meeting his dog Catfish at the Pearly Gates. Which politician, celebrity death are you looking forward to drawing?
December 8th, 20101:53 pm
Fred, you made me laugh out loud! you are very funny, so i hope you can’t draw
December 8th, 20101:55 pm
Don’t worry. I really CAN’T draw. Not even a decent stick figure……..
well put, steve. your cogent take on the issues of the day leave me speechless.
How nervous are you the paper you write for will go under? Seeing that you don’t know much about business and making money, you should consider going back to school.
December 8th, 20101:56 pm
Well Mike I am looking forward to the next live online chat with you, keep up the good work and stay blessed.
Jerry, Jerry, Jerry — What do your tea leaves and powerpoint charts say about the exponential growth trends of online readers and blogs linking to AJC online?
booker t. i did the lewis grizzard cartoon almost 20 years ago and readers still remmber that one. when i give a speech, someone always mentions it.
December 8th, 20101:58 pm
Have a great day Mike. Maybe I’ll remember the question I’ve been wanting to ask you for about three weeks by next Wednesday………..
Mike – How do we buy your originals ? There’s one from 4 years ago that I’d like to buy among others .
December 8th, 20101:59 pm
everyone, thanks for your comments. there were some great ones today. see you next wednesday from 1 to 2.
December 8th, 20102:00 pm
Were you aware that the AJC was given quite a bit of trouble trying to enter Gingrich’s 1994 victory party at the Cobb Galleria after your controversial cartoon?
I was there helping to cover it for a media outlet. It was a bit over the top on the part of the Gingrich entourage.
cisinc, you can email me about originals at firstname.lastname@example.org
December 8th, 20102:01 pm
Ted, Ted, Ted,—You must be a Lib. I used supporting facts. Typical Lib, just make statements and call them facts. Sounds like you read the “tea leaves”, not me. Hmmmmmm?
April 20th, 201112:57 pm
i’m now online for questions.
April 20th, 20111:01 pm
no question- I really enjoy your work, makes me smile:)
You are a great cartoonist. Thank you for the work that you do. My question…How easy are the Republican candidates for the 2012 presidential election going to make your job for the next 18 months?
How quickly do your ideas to come to you? Are you ever stumped?
April 20th, 20111:03 pm
thank you for your comments. cortez, the gop candidates are great for cartoonists. for everyone else, not so much. check out tomorrow’s cartoon. i’m thinking about doing one on them.
April 20th, 20111:05 pm
lea, i’m stumped every day. it’s usually the panic that sets in as my deadline gets close that makes me come up with something.
Hey, Mike, I’m a blogger at ThinkProgress and I just want to say like the few times we’ve talked before that I really enjoy your cartooning.
I’ve been writing a lot about how Main Street America seems to be a big target right now in the sense that the right keeps trying to cut programs and services for average folks — Pell Grants, Head Start, etc. Yet we’ve seen major corporations get away with paying little to no federal corporate income taxes. Have you thought about putting this theme into your cartoons more — the priorities of Washington when it comes to Main Street vs. Corporate America? It seems like it’s a basic issue of fairness and priorities.
April 20th, 20111:06 pm
thanks for reading my cartoons sheri. they don’t make everyone smile. i’ve gotten a couple emails today from folks who didn’t like the last supper cartoon
April 20th, 20111:07 pm
well you know what they say about “can’t take a joke”
April 20th, 20111:08 pm
zaid, i’ve addressed that subject repeatedly. america is screwed up. i hope we come to our senses before it’s too late.
April 20th, 20111:09 pm
sheri, some people have too much time on their hands
April 20th, 20111:10 pm
Hi Mike, I’ve never really been in to political cartoons but I must say that over the past year your talent has brought me to your doorstep…when things are at their most serious you find a way to make people such as myself belt out a strong laugh and when things are at the point where you just want to shake your head and ask why? You find a way to bring that out in your cartoons as well. I enjoy you and I hope and pray that you continue to make me and others look at the issues with either a small chuckle, huge laugh or sigh of disbelief…
April 20th, 20111:11 pm
Thanks for all you do! I look forward to your work every day.
April 20th, 20111:12 pm
there are excerpts in today’s ny times of a story in the upcoming sunday times magazine about the life of obama and his mom. it’s facinating.
Mike – I can’t recall a cartoon of yours that I haven’t liked. They always make me stop, think and laugh – not always in that order. My concern is that, if I like all your cartoons, does that mean there is something wrong with me or with you?
April 20th, 20111:13 pm
thank you chanta’l. i love doing this. it’s a blast every day. and thank you gablue!
April 20th, 20111:14 pm
bob, i’m fine, but there is obviously something seriously wrong with you. thanks for reading me bob!
April 20th, 20111:15 pm
is there anyone online who hates me and thinks my cartoons suck?
April 20th, 20111:16 pm
While I think you are a very talented cartoonist, and sometimes your stuff is funny, your left wing leanings are part of what discredits this newspaper. I acknowledge this is not your fault, however I find it interesting that you continuously take shots at Fox News for right leaning reporting while giving CNN and others a free pass.
Mike, I liked your demonstration cartoons, they were so funny. It is like the dictators think it will all go away if they make one or two promises.
By the way, If you need some coins for when you go overseas, I’d be happy to help get you some. My company does lots of command coins for government agencies, and you could put your name or face or the AJC, whatever you want.
April 20th, 20111:17 pm
Just read the cartoon for today (only because someone or some individuals had some complaints) and I say “hilarious!”…anyone who can’t see the parody is too caught up in being politically correct at all times…EVEN JESUS laughed, played and enjoyed life. Like I said before…keepy doing what you are doing :0)
April 20th, 20111:18 pm
I’ll make sure I check it out tomorrow, Mike. Im currently working in the Middle East as a firefighter but I was also firefighter for the City of Atlanta 2 years ago. Do you ever do cartoons of firefighters or police officers or folks in public safety? I don’t recall seeing any of your cartoons that you have. If not you should. Really. We have serious jobs but we also have to laugh at ourself sometimes. I know I do.
I remember you drawing a few cartoons during the 2004 election, and Al Sharpton asked you if you were the one that drew him with the funny hair. Did he ever figure out it was you?
April 20th, 20111:20 pm
timothy, you don’t read my stuff regularly, because you’d know i’ve regularly hit cnn. occasionally, readers email saying that my cartoons are biased. of course they are! that’s why they’re on the OPINION pages. that said, the ajc makes sure there’s a balance of opinion from the right and left, including cartoons.
April 20th, 20111:22 pm
“is there anyone online who hates me and thinks my cartoons suck?”
Of course there is. Would it change your opinions or cartoons if they spoke up? It’s better to just leave these things as a love fest for you.
thanks carter! i may take you up on that. my email is email@example.com. if you send me your contact info, that would be great.
April 20th, 20111:23 pm
c’mon, i do, let me have it. i dish it out, i can take it.
Mike L- Why are most of your cartoons from a Pro-Democrat view? Seems like you really don’t care for Republican opinions or what might be funny to them.
April 20th, 20111:24 pm
You know this is a GOP state generally right?
April 20th, 20111:25 pm
graetgonzo26, i don’t know if he ever figured it out or not.
Maybe that doesn’t matter to you, after all it is your opinion.
April 20th, 20111:26 pm
Who was the most interesting president to cartoon?
April 20th, 20111:27 pm
Love your work. The funniest I’ve seen recently had to be the GOP Prez Candidates/No Fly Zone – that was awesome. Of all the Republicans you know of, are there any that you would consider a good candidate? I’m not just asking about the group that has expressed interest in running – any Republicans. For example, I used to like John McCain!
Mike – I am a daily subscriber – can’t get the day started unless there is a fish wrapper at the end of the driveway. However, I realize I’m in a minority these days. (Thankfully my sons at least pour over the sports page while gulping down a bowl of cereal on the way out the door.) That being said, how is the shrinking print market changing what you do?
April 20th, 20111:28 pm
hankie aron, i think the gop has gone so far outside the mainstream and their potential prez candidates are such losers, it’s hard not to hit them. i hit democrats too, but right now republicans have the market cornered on crazy
Afternoon Mike….love your cartoons every day. First thing I look at when I grab the paper in the morning. I understand your bias, as it were, but that just makes each cartoon more enjoyable. The GOP needs to loosen up…you’ve taken your fair share of shots at the Dems as well…I remember quite a few classics involving the Clintons.
April 20th, 20111:29 pm
tom, i like mitch daniels. he at least seems rational, which will probably doom his chances.
In response to your 1:15 question asking if anyone online hates you and thinks your cartoons suck: I certainly don’t hate you and can’t say that your work “sucks”, but I do have to agree with Timothy that your work has a decidedly left-leaning bias. Working at the AJC probably creates more than a bit of pressure to simply go along with the bias there, but I’d like to see you be a bit more impartial and skewer both right and left..
There are a huge number of common-sense conservatives out here that are not rabid and paranoid racist haters that believe everything that Fox News puts out. It’s a shame that you and the AJC have elected to lump us in with the fringe element. The powers that be at the AJC might find that subscriptions might go up and the paper live a little longer if the bias (and Cynthia Tucker) went away…
About the best thing I can say about your cartoons is that they are creative. I cannot say I have ever enjoyed them given their usual ‘lack of objectivity’ lets just say. Your ‘work’ is partially responsible for my decision to finally cancel my subscription to the AJC some time ago. I suppose that does bring up another benefit. When the folks hawking subscriptions knock on my door or accost me in the grocery store I just tell them that the AJC has too many ultra lefties on the payroll and cite you and a couple of blog writers by name. They usually just give up at that point with a look on their faces that tells me they have heard that story many times before.
April 20th, 20111:30 pm
Thank you for your anwser. By the way, the liberals are the ones who “hate” those who they disagree with and use nasty terms like “hate”, and “racist” and whatever term is used at the time to refer to someone who does not agree with them.
While I think you are wrong and ill informed, I do not “hate” you. I actually enjoy your sense of humor!
April 20th, 20111:31 pm
there are still a lot of folks like yourself, believe it or not, who still love to get an actual paper. online hasn’t changed what i do too much. i still try to do the very best cartoon i can do, every day.
April 20th, 20111:33 pm
Wow…I guess folks aren’t paying attention to the articles by Kyle, Bob and Jim as they appear to have the right’s point of view covered.
April 20th, 20111:34 pm
Pretty easy for you to say “potential prez candidates are such losers”. The biggest loser is the one currently in office. Has problems keeping promises made. Change you can believe in.
What would Obama have to do for you to do a critical cartoon of him?
April 20th, 20111:35 pm
aj, kimmer, timothy, thank you all for your comments. the ajc’s main focus is to strive for balance. for both sides to have an equal say on the opinion pages. they even try to be balanced with the roster of cartoonists they run. i appreciate you all reading me, even though you may not agree with me. i live in sandy springs, where most of my friends and neighbors don’t necessarily share my opinions. that’s what makes america great.
April 20th, 20111:37 pm
ron, i did a critical cartoon of obama last week, on tuesday. when he makes mistakes i hit him.
Here’s a link to that cartoon
@ Native Atlantan
Bob Barr hardly respresents most conservatives. That’s like saying Bernie Sanders represents all liberals.
It’s too easy to point to the loons on the extreme right or the extreme left as respresenative of either group and demagogue them. It would sure be nice to be able to disagree and still have a decent conversation.
I can understand at least somewhat Mike L, there are some crazies like Trump and Palin that have no business muddying the water. Thanks for answering my question.
April 20th, 20111:38 pm
Another thing I wanted to tell you. It takes guts to get on-line live and respond to questions. You have actually earned a great deal of respect from me. I will always read your cartoons even though I do not always agree with you.
I would not go as far as to compare you with Cynthia Tucker. I sense a great deal of hostility in her work which dicredits her. I have never gotten this impression from your work.
Continued success Mr. Luckovich.
timothy, liberals and conservatives alike should not resort to racism or hate. we should be better than that
April 20th, 20111:39 pm
Hi Mike! No Question, just wanted to say I love your cartoons! They give me a great laugh during my day!
I agree totally AJ. Thanks
hi Mike, i find your cartoons to often be right on target. you do have a quirky sense of humor and no one can please everyone all of the time. come to think of it: who wants to? continue doing what you do and we will continue viewing it–even those who have cancelled their physical subscribtions to the paper because of writers like you, but… still apparently read you for free online. anyway, a lot of times i copy your stuff with your name and post it on my fb page. you roq!
April 20th, 20111:40 pm
thanks timothy. you’re a good man.
April 20th, 20111:41 pm
@ @Native Atlanta…you missed my point….posters slam the AJC because of Cynthia Tucker and Mike yet ignore equal time provided to Kyle and Jim. I agree… Bob Barr hardly represents the right as he is all over the place with his views.
Just curious- how do you think Pres Obama is doing as a leader? I know that he inherited a mess on several fronts, I just don’t see him as a leader of men (and women) who shoots straight and makes the tough calls.
You are pretty dialed into politics. How about you?
April 20th, 20111:42 pm
carla roqs, thanks for the comment. i hope that even those that may not agree with me, will check me out occasionally
April 20th, 20111:43 pm
Yes, you are a talented cartoonist. I do however, find your liberal bias as nauseating as I find our President. With the current state of our Country and daily incompetence out of the Oval office, you never lay the blame where it should be. You might want to try some objectivity.
April 20th, 20111:44 pm
Just want to say that I really enjoy your cartoons no matter who the target is. All the best!
April 20th, 20111:45 pm
aj, good question. i think obama has inherited a hell of a mess and it would be hard for anyone to clean it up in 2 years. i do wish he were more forceful in explaining what he’s doing. he’s a bit aloof and i think that hurts him.
Blah Blah Blah
Don do you have any non-Glen Beck solutions to our country’s woes or do you think blaming the current president is going to fix things?
April 20th, 20111:46 pm
Hey Mike: Charlie Sheen has begun questioning Obama’s birth certificate…maybe a Donald and Sheen cartoon?
Amen on your comment about Cynthia Tucker. If a white person said some of the things she does, Jesse J and Al S would be marching on the capitol. She, however, gets a free pass. She does more to keep racial divisions going than all the Klansmen in Georgia do (if there really are any).
April 20th, 20111:47 pm
@Timothy trust me, there are some still here
thanks don. just allow me to repeat again. AN EDITORIAL CARTOONIST’S JOB ISN’T TO BE OBJECTIVE. IT’S TO HAVE A POINT OF VIEW. that’s why i’m on the OPINION pages.
Mike – of all your cartoons, which one do have framed hanging in your house as the one you thought to yourself, “I wrote this one and it was great!”
April 20th, 20111:49 pm
I just love your toons. you’re just great
Did you see Michelle Bachmann on Good Morning America? She’s backing away from the birther nonsense. Think Donald Trump’s rise in the polls have something to do with that?
Love your cartoons, especially ones in remembrance (ie-Lewis Grizzard, UGA VII). The one for today was particularly good. I am so tired of trying to carry on conversations with people while they are busy texting, etc.
@timothy, please tell us specifically what cynthia has said that offends you.
April 20th, 20111:50 pm
Regarding Obama’s ledership, I have to agree that he inherited a real mess. However, he appears to me to be a demographically attractive and telegenic man who gives good speech, is too dialed into the polls, and fails when it comes to being decisive. There are a lot of examples of his paralysis, but they don’t get reported by many media sources and are generally ignored on editorial pages.
Thaanks for giving your take on the subject, though.
April 20th, 20111:51 pm
Mike your cartoon on Sept 12th 2001 made a huge impact in my classrooms when I taught
midori, you’re absolutely right. the birther crap only hurts republicans outside of the nutty republican base. even someone like bachmann recognizes this.
April 20th, 20111:52 pm
“ron, i did a critical cartoon of obama last week, on tuesday. when he makes mistakes i hit him”
You couldn’t have made our point any better Mike. That cartoon is the best you can come up with for this President? Every waking day you have material from this guy. You just choose not to rip him like you do to every GOP politician you can find.
April 20th, 20111:53 pm
@homemom, isn’t that annoying? i hate when i’m with someone and they’re continually looking down at their frigging phone
Keep up the good work! Love your toons and when I was a subscriber I loved seeing you almost every week in Newsweek!
I think Don is my brother-in-law.
April 20th, 20111:54 pm
don, give me some suggestions for things to hit obama about. and they can’t be made-up fox news stuff.
April 20th, 20111:55 pm
lol @Native Altantan
pdub, thank you.
Your thought on the reelection of President Obama?
No quotes from Cynthia Tucker off the top of my head, but she seems to have a perspective that whites are biased against blacks and that blacks are alwasys getting the short end of the stick. Sure, some whites are biased and some blacks do get screwed, but it happens far less than she thinks. Maybe I’m naive, but I think there are a lot of good and decent white folks who have nothing against blacks and would love to see them all succeed as americans.
As I said earlier, the constant stream of devisive talk from her simply antagonizes “good” whites and keeps the racial divide in place.
April 20th, 20111:57 pm
Hit President Obama on his sleeping vice!
getalife, i think obama has a good shot at reelection, but it’s things like gas prices, which are out of his control, that will impact his chances
April 20th, 20111:59 pm
rodney, good idea! maybe obama will fire him and he’ll be hired as an air traffic controller. hey, i may have come up with a cartoon! i owe you rodny! got to go folks! thank you to all of you! this was fun!
Are cartoonist like op-ed coumnist in that they are syndicated and run in many papers or are you exclusive to ajc. Love your humor!
April 20th, 20112:00 pm
Thanks for your work and humor!
April 27th, 201112:58 pm
i’m online now.
April 27th, 20111:01 pm
does anybody out there still believe obama wasn’t born in the u.s.?
How do you decide what to “talk” about each day?
How long does it take you to come up with an idea – generally speaking?
April 27th, 20111:02 pm
What sort of paper do you draw on? And what sort of pencils or pens do you use? How did you learn to draw editorial cartoons?
free, i try to comment on whatever is big in the news. maybe the birth certificate or the royal wedding for tomorrow.
April 27th, 20111:04 pm
kat, i procrastinate all day until around 3, then start to panic because my deadline is 5:30. it depends on how creative i’m feelin, but usally takes a couple hours.
April 27th, 20111:06 pm
junior, i use smooth inexpensive bristol board and use “micron” pens. i don’t know how i learned to do it.
April 27th, 20111:07 pm
Was it your decision or the AJC’s decision to not allow comments on your cartoons? I’ve always been curious about that.
Hey Mike, I am a big fan of your work. ^_^
April 27th, 20111:08 pm
good grief, it was a joint decision. if comments were allowed, someone (me) would have to monitor them and it would be a big hassle.
April 27th, 20111:09 pm
thanks you, msshan! i love doing them.
SpaceyG on Twitter
April 27th, 20111:12 pm
Extra points if you’ll do a birth certificate AND royal wedding cartoon. That or WSB-TV adding a four o’clock show now. Heck, if you can get all three into one cartoon I’ll let Steve Rayman sell you a used car.
April 27th, 20111:13 pm
Did President Obama’s talk the White House Press corps about their focus on trivial issues apply to you, too?
Ever think about having your cartoons animated in Flash?
(Asks the flash animator).
Abe Lincoln, Vampire Slayer
I haven’t checked lately, but are you drawing cartoons related to the Hawks and Thrashers? The one with the turkey waving the Falcons foam finger is a favorite if mine. Btw, you visited my high school years ago: very cool.
April 27th, 20111:14 pm
As for the birth certificate, I’m kind of bummed. I liked the idea of living in an America where a Kenyan born Muslim could rise to the office of the President.
Probably don’t have any problem finding humor in the headlines these days. Enjoy and appreciate the effort required in your work. Are you familiar with the catoonist/humorist H.T.Webster from the 30’s and 40’s?
Originator of Mr. Milquetoast. He always did a good job of combining humor and social commentary.
free polazzo, no.
I think you should do the WSBTV newscast. The royal wedding is too overexposed as it is. Let’s not add to the hype. Also, another birther cartoon would be cool.
April 27th, 20111:15 pm
Ughh… Flash. Only used by The Ministry now. Avoid.
April 27th, 20111:16 pm
Hey, Mike, Good to able to say thank you. While I am conservative, few editorial commentators hit their targets as well as you and I appreciate your skill! I was never a birther, but wonder why he did not release it earlier if he was going to release it all. While the birthers look bad without any help, not clarifying this earlier, I believe, hurt Mr. Obama, with those folks who might have been fence sitters. But to tell the truth, I’ve not met very many of those either with regards to the President.
April 27th, 20111:17 pm
remember, folksie. the birth certificate doesn’t disprove he’s a secret socialist/marxist/muslim/nazi.
April 27th, 20111:19 pm
mrtytn, thanks so much for your words. you’re a great american!
April 27th, 20111:20 pm
How aboiut a cortoon with birthers looking at the President’s Birth Cerificate under a microscope and then asking for his College Transcript so they can continue to distract us from the serious issues and those who are responsible for them.
Also, how do we know Prince William is really Diane’s son? Maybe we should also see his birth certificate?
abe lincoln vampire slayer, nice name. i should do more sports related cartoons.
April 27th, 20111:21 pm
So I can now rant about that secret socialist/marxist/muslim/nazi?
Imma head to the union hall to wait out the storm. Practice some salutes and stuff. Maybe grab a ham sandwich. Y’all let me know if a tornado messes with Justin Farmer’s hair.
April 27th, 20111:22 pm
free, that’s already happening. the donald wants to see his college transcripts!
Keep up the great work, Mike.
April 27th, 20111:23 pm
enjoy the sandwich spacey.
April 27th, 20111:25 pm
Donald Trumpa has no right to cast aspersions on anyone. Where else but in an America can you bankrupt companies and then have the gall to talk about someone else’s fiscal responsibility?
April 27th, 20111:26 pm
Donald vs. Obama is a contest made in Heaven! Donald makes his name by pure BS and bluster. Obama works his way to the “top” by rejecting the money making path and beocming a community organizer.
Then the money madman attacks the community organizer for not understanding community. How does the man who says “Your Fired” on TV while our country is facing serous unemploymnet issues get so many votes in these “staw poll” ? Is it because he is a “Straw Man”?
April 27th, 20111:27 pm
Are you exclusive to ajc or are you syndicated in a number of papers??
April 27th, 20111:29 pm
free polazza and msshan, i did a trump cartoon recently that questions whether trump’s hair was born in america.
April 27th, 20111:30 pm
I think Trump and Obama are a terrific comedy team, and should probably appear as the opening act to the Charlie Sheen roadshow.
April 27th, 20111:31 pm
bphilb, my cartoons appear in the ajc first and of course, all my local cartoons are exclusive to the ajc, but the national cartoons are syndicated across the country, so i get hatemail from all 50 states.
April 27th, 20111:33 pm
Well, we are proud to have you here. No matter your political persuasion I love your work. very thoughtful.
Who were your “idols” as you became a cartoonist?
April 27th, 20111:34 pm
good idea, folksie. trump could demand obama produce a u.s. drivers licence, his elementary school report cards, his library card, his american express card, blockbuster video rental card, marriage certificate…
April 27th, 20111:35 pm
…I can picture it now, like the old “Let’s Make a Deal “. Mr. Obama, I will give you $50 dollars if you can produce a clove of garlic!
thanks bphilb, my favorite as a kid, was mort drucker. he drew the MAD movie satires. he’s a beautiful artist and is now a friend of mine!
April 27th, 20111:36 pm
you’re funny folksie. i hope you can’t draw.
April 27th, 20111:37 pm
I do draw. You can see my work at my site: http://www.fooksie.com
I am a cartoonist/animator.
April 27th, 20111:38 pm
I hope it’s not a faux pas, I am not trying to steal any thunder from you. I think it’s great that you are doing this lunch conversation with us fans.
April 27th, 20111:39 pm
sorry. it’s not folksie, it’s fooksie.
Yes, and especially in April when there’s something brewing in practically every pro sport. Thanks again!
Did you go to art school, or are you self taught?
April 27th, 20111:40 pm
nice stuff, fooksie! i went to your site. you’re good!
The truth is
You, Bookman, and Tucker are just left-wing hacks.
Mike, on 4-26 you released your Illegal Immigration cartoon. How is it justified to show GA business with a black eye? I mean Illegal is Illegal isn’t it? Shouldn’t your cartoon have been better with a big ol’ boot to the rump of these illegal people?
April 27th, 20111:41 pm
Thanks. I am a graduate of the Joe Kubert School, back when they taught animation.
i went to the school of mad magazine, in that i tried to draw like all my mad magazine heroes. then, my own style developed over time
April 27th, 20111:42 pm
I have to ask…pc or mac?
April 27th, 20111:43 pm
I really enjoy your work. Your cartoons have me rolling on the floor laughing.
thank you, The Truth Is, i’ve been waiting for someone like you. so, do you think obama was born in the u.s.?
Billy Ray Valentine
April 27th, 20111:45 pm
I think I have to agree with ‘the truth is…’
while this lunch session has turned into a rump kissing session, you’re still a left-wing nut hack like C. Tucker and J. Bookman.
fooksie, i think this is a pc. i do all my drawing on paper and just use the computer for scanning. Maria, thank you! you couldn’t give me a better compliment!
April 27th, 20111:46 pm
Wait…It’s suddenly clear…I understand now…You didn’t answer my question because you are not really Mike L….He would know who H.T. Webster was!…Quick draw a picture of your birth certificate! Dang Right Wing/Nazi/Muslim/Midget/Amish/Vegetarian conspiracy!
I have no interest in the so-called “birther” issue, the real issue is that he is a horrible President. No, it has nothing to do with race, he would be just as bad if he were white, green , yellow, or blue.
April 27th, 20111:48 pm
Personally, I don’t care where he was born, the fact that the democrats (of which he is one) are spending like we got extra cash sitting around is the problem.
but I guess that’s somehow the republicans fault, and we should raise the debt ceiling (in reference to your cartoon the other day)
When is there going to be a cartoon that depicts Obama sitting in the oval office trying to write a check from an empty checkbook….and has to tell Joe Biden that he can’t have a pony for his birthday because we’re out of money?
billy ray, you’re right. my business card actually says,”Mike Luckovich left-wing nut hack.”
Mike are you planning on a new Illegal immigration cartoon that actually presses the fact that these people are here Illegally?
April 27th, 20111:49 pm
I’m with truth….not a birther, I don’t care where he’s from. The American people need to know what you’re going to do to get us out of this spending mess that YOU got us in.
Will the married TV watchers upgrade to 3-D? I’ve enjoyed noticing their video upgrades over the years. BTW, my all time favorite of your drawings was the Clarence Thomas, Supreme Court, No underwear. Did you get a lot of flack for that?
April 27th, 20111:50 pm
Wait a minute, Billy Ray Vampire. I didn’t know we were supposed to attack this guy, instead of asking questions and such.
While I don’t agree with a lot of the points of view in Mr. Luckovich’s cartoons, I can still be polite.
Bet you can’t prove it says that…..ha ha
April 27th, 20111:51 pm
truth is and billy ray, i sympathize with obama for having to clean up the ginormous mess left by republicans..
While I am against people being here illegally, I am not against hiring said illegals to mow a lawn or two. : )
April 27th, 20111:52 pm
my deepest apologies Fooksie,
Hey Mr. Luckovich….when are we gonna see a cartoon that depicts obama on a spending spree?
Maybe have him with a few buggys at the wal-mart, and have him yelling to Michelle and the girls something like ‘go ahead and get 2 of everything, we’ll just raise the debt ceiling”
by the way, i want ALL comments positive or negative
I came in on the end of your Tell Me More conversation. Where can I read about the controversy over your cartoon
April 27th, 20111:53 pm
oh boy, there’s the same tired argument…..how much debt has Obama put us in since taking over 2+ years ago?
numbers please? You can draw them if you prefer.
Yeah Obama is speaking out against the Ga plan, but if he won’t tackle the problem someone needs to
So you’re saying the republicans did this AAAALLL by themselves? There ya go, left wing hack.
April 27th, 20111:54 pm
Biily Ray Valentine( don’t know why I thought it was Vampire), that would be a funny cartoon.
April 27th, 20111:55 pm
national debt in 2008 – 10 trillion
national debt 2+ years later – approaching 14.5 Trillion
Who spent that 4.5 Trillion? did Bush throw a very expensive going away party?
April 27th, 20111:56 pm
Well, Bush doubled the debt in his 8 years, and Mr. Obama, being a clearly better president, managed to double that in only 3 years. Change you can believe in, but not in your pocket.
billy ray, obama and bush spent on tarp and the stimulus to avoid a depression. we’re running big deficits because tax revenue plunged after the economy under bush collapsed. it’s also due to the bush tax cuts and two unpaid for wars under bush
M’uck………good to see you back here. Had a good chortle over a Santa toon you drew last Christmas.
How about an Eddie Long, secret settlement cartoon?
You could do a toon about the scary similarities among Dubyah’s brain, Trump’s hair and Newt’s ethics – just take the day off and turn in a blank panel!
Well, Mike, at least you take ALL comments. Which is more than I can say for your co-horts–Bookman and Tucker. They block them. Kudos for that.
April 27th, 20111:57 pm
No of course the republicans didn’t do it all themselves. The dems basically rolled over and gave W. whatever he wanted after 9/11. Most of congress should be ashamed of themselves for avoiding real issues.
it wasn’t much of a controversy. somereaders were upset i did a cartoon using the last supper
April 27th, 20111:58 pm
only a few minutes left to kiss your left wing hackle… i enjoy your work and used to read mad mag from behind my sociology book. truth is – both parties are f’ed up but not as f’ed up as the voters who believe the words they use to get their vote.
April 27th, 20112:00 pm
I think this was a lot of fun and I wish you much success! Thanks for putting up with us!
thank you all for a spirited discussion! guy incognito, that is definitely a great topic! i’ll put that on my list. i hope you all come back next week at 1pm.
Now that Obama has stepped up, how about Sarah Palin and “The Donald” showing there medical records that they are of human origin and not a Borg created in a multinational corporation’s lab?
Here, you want an idea for a cartoon……first one is free..
tomorrow, set the scene for the royal wedding….have Kate walking down the Isle..
off to the side, have Donald Trump whispering in the Queens ear “Your Majesty, did you actaully see her birth certificate?”
May 2nd, 201110:02 am
Mike’s blog is open for comments.
May 2nd, 201110:03 am
May 2nd, 201110:05 am
Spot on Mike….
May 2nd, 201110:08 am
What is Obama in hell for?
May 2nd, 201110:13 am
Clarify the statement Obama now in hell.
May 2nd, 201110:15 am
You really hate Bush don’t you. At a time that should reflect the overwhelming unity of post 9/11 you just can’t resist taking a shot at George Bush. You are a sad and petty man.
Mike, you meant with Osama in Hell, I think unless it was a Fruedian slip??
May 2nd, 201110:17 am
eyes, i’m glad you’re paying attention. i meant “osama.” i think the mistake has been fixed.
May 2nd, 201110:20 am
birddawg, quit being a whiner. the cartoon is about “mission accomplished.” which is getting osama.
May 2nd, 201110:21 am
Birddawg, what in the hell are you talking about? There’s nothing in that cartoon that is anti-Bush. You right wingers are all paranoid, conspiracy theorists. I’ve already seen some comments by some of your right wing brethren saying they don’t believe Osama is dead. How pitiful you and your kind are. And I am sure Luck meant OSAMA now in hell.
May 2nd, 201110:24 am
@Birddawg, it’s a cartoon. Get over it. Most of your ilk don’t remember Dubya standing in front of that big sign with that usual sheepish grin on his face declaring “Mission Accomplished.” Dubya later said in his 2nd term that OBL was not a target for him. Dubya also in his 2nd term that N. Korea was no longer a threat to the U.S. Eight years no OBL for the oil baron Dubya, 2 years for President Obama and he gets the job done. Mission Accomplished!!
I agree…for someone who I consider one the pettiest people on Earth, this obvious CHEAP SHOT indeed reaches a new low.
Thanks as always Mike! Your capacity to offend goes undiminished!!!
May 2nd, 201110:26 am
Just what “job” did Obama do here? The intelligence gathering that led to this raid started years before he even entered office.
May 2nd, 201110:27 am
hi everyone. normally, my blog isn’t open for comments, but with osama now in hell, it seemed like a good time for comments. i first heard the news around 6:30 am, came up with the idea around 7, drove to the ajc and had it drawn and colored by 8. this is the earliest i’ve ever been finished.
May 2nd, 201110:31 am
“the cartoon is about “mission accomplished.” which is getting osama.”
-Riiiiight…so the obvious reference to W’s exact words is in no way an attempt to be cheaply ironic while ham-fistedly making the point that ‘now the mission is REALLY accomplished’ (har, har, har) Please…spare us all. Your cartoon speaks for itself.
May 2nd, 201110:32 am
i’m a little embarrassed. WestSider thinks i’m one of the prettiest people on earth!
@westsider, if this is a new low in cheap shots, you must completely ignore anything the GOP says.
May 2nd, 201110:33 am
Mike…..This is your best EVER! Ignore the teabaggers and ultra right wingers. This morning I actually heard Glen Beck Thanking George Bush (Yes, I wrote that correctly) for finally getting Bin Laden in his 9:00 hour ! Can you believe that?
May 2nd, 201110:34 am
WestSider, Obama is the commander in chief, so he deserves credit. One thing he did that contributed to this capture was stepping up the drone attacks in Pakistan. There were other things as well, but you and the right wing attack machine will never give him the credit he deserves, so there’s no point in even trying to convince you otherwise. You people never let the facts stand in the way of your opinion.
May 2nd, 201110:38 am
Stepping up drone attacks? Doesn’t that funnel money into the military industrial complex?
I think I read an account on ABC news this morning that stated the intelligence was gathered from Guantanamo detainees…oh yeah, wasn’t that the place Obama wanted to close so badly?
The orginal tip came from a captive at Gitmo. under Bush…do you realize that had we closed Gitmo like Obama wanted we may never had caught him…just sayin…this ain’t all Obama
May 2nd, 201110:44 am
Gaytors, of course it’s not all Obama. Bush deserves some credit, and the military and intelligence communities deserve a huge amount of credit. But Obama deserves a share of the credit as well. This is a victory for America. And Westsider, when you don’t have a viable argument for your position, just rely on sarcasm.
May 2nd, 201110:48 am
So the argument that Obama wanted to close the detention facility that yeilded the result of finding out where Bin Laden was hiding isn’t viable?
I’ll dial down the sarcasm a bit so you can respond without getting flustered.
May 2nd, 201110:49 am
Let’s compromise, Bush gets the win, Obama gets the save.
It was hyper-partisans that had a fit over Bush’s Mission Accomplished sign. No one thinks the war on Terror is over, just as no one, including Bush, thought the war in Iraq was over. The mission to kill Osama is accomplished and a great accomplishment at that. America and Freedom in general are better for it. Both Missions Accomplished were successes for America and they should both be celebrated.
I’m a conservative libertarian who voted for Bush and I didn’t see this as a jab at Bush in any way. I guess every time someone uses the phrase Mission Accomplished it should be a reference towards Bush now? Also, Bush set out to overthrow Saddam, which he did. Although I don’t agree with his politics, kudos to Obama and to Seal Team 6 and the other brave men and women in our armed forces. Good job on this pic as weel, Mike.
May 2nd, 201110:50 am
Genius in its simplicity. Smooth and poignant.
May 2nd, 201110:53 am
Please see Sigmund as to why I think this is a slap at Bush.
And just to be clear I am quite please that OBL is dead, and that it was the US military that did it. Furthermore, I congratulate the President for ordering it. I think he was right not to do it with an air strike, but with US personnel on the ground.
May 2nd, 201110:57 am
Well said Jason.
May 2nd, 201111:00 am
Jason – comparing the hunt for Bin Laden to the pursuit of Saddam is like comparing a hound chasing a crook to a housecat pouncing at its own shadow. Bin Laden took credit for 9/11 and taunted the US. Our entry into Iraq was based on a bogus search for weapons of mass destruction and a nonsensical link between Saddam and attacks on US soil.
May 2nd, 201111:09 am
Now, it could be just me, but Birddawg (if that is your real name), I believe it was Mike who did the cartoon, not Sigmund. Your petty stammering about some anti-Bush motive completely misses the point. Well done, Mike. By 8 a.m., you say? And you still colored inside the lines? I am impressed. Great ‘toon.
May 2nd, 201111:17 am
The AJC is very lucky to have Mike. This one is a classic.
Yes, there is a tongue in cheek reference to the Bush’s ill-fated dog and pony show on the aircraft carrier, but then this is a political cartoon and not Peanuts. If you can’t take what is hilarious and pointed sarcasm then perhaps you should stick to the comics page.
I think both President Bush and President Obama should be congratulated. President Bush for not listening to critics and staying the course and President Obama for continuing to be vigilant and ordering the operation into action. Thanks to America’s special forces for getting the job done. BTW, great cartoon Mike!
May 2nd, 201111:31 am
May 2nd, 201111:44 am
First, I think it’s funny that everytime someone posts I’m crazy to think the cartoon is anti-Bush the next says what a great shot at Bush it was. My point was that at a time of unity the first place Mike goes is to take a shot at Bush.
May 2nd, 201112:00 pm
Hey folks. Let’s not argue over petty stuff today. Whether you are off the board right or loonie left we should all agree this is a great moment in U.S. history. It is even more significant than the capture of Saddam. The fact is GWB did not get him. The U.S. military and intel services did. Obama, unlike Clinton, gave the go ahead. And unlike Carter, didn’t screw it up. I am a Libertarian, but give him credit for that much, at least. Nice job Mike. Add a little hell fire wouldn’t be bad in the Toon.
May 2nd, 201112:13 pm
LOL wish I would have seen the one with the typo. Last night on Bookman’s blog I did the same thing, typed Obama instead of Osama, after that I just typed Bin Laden.
Nice cartoon Mike. I think you summed it up nicely.
May 2nd, 201112:19 pm
May 2nd, 20111:03 pm
@MikeGA, well said! I totally agree!
May 2nd, 20111:04 pm
I think you’re really pretty to Mike… LOL.. Great job… These nut cases that comment are always good for a laugh and controversy…. I love your responses.. they slay me..
May 2nd, 20111:18 pm
Amazing…President Obama, slapped the living day lights out of Osama with his long form birth certificate….I hope Donald Trump is satisfied!
News Flash: Donald is demanding to see the “death certificate”!
May 2nd, 20111:24 pm
From the teabaggers….”don’t beleive for a minute theat OBL is dead, the Barack Hussein Obama administration is lying; like the birth certificate issue; it’s just to help his poll numbers.)
Someone please put these people up on faux news so they can make further fools of themselves! Oh, and great cartoon Mike.
May 2nd, 20111:32 pm
These are the facts. When Bush was elected, he replaced all of Clintons(or most of)security teams. Thats what presidents do. They were in charge at the time of 9/11 when the country suffered the biggest security failure since Pearl Harbor. The media was very kind to Bush. Bush’s team tried for eight years but failed to capture or kill him. Obama wins the election and puts his team in charge of capturing or killing Bin Laden. They kill him in 2 years. You can spin it how you want, Bush tried, Obama did it……………………………..
May 2nd, 20111:34 pm
I have read that Arab cultures find the soles of feet offensive. The foot is considered unclean, so to show the sole of one’s foot to another person–even accidentally–is an insult. Perhaps I am reading too much into this.
May 2nd, 20111:35 pm
DO you still do the Wednesday lunch thing?
May 2nd, 20111:38 pm
“oil baron Dubya”? What’s the price of oil and gas today? Not very bright are ya?
May 2nd, 20111:39 pm
Great one, Mike! This one goes right next to the one of the crying Statue of Liberty!
May 2nd, 20111:42 pm
Good job Mike. Obama had the fortitude to go forward with a plan instead of invading Norway or some other country that had no hand in any of this.
Or the “WHY?” toon.
May 2nd, 20111:46 pm
LOL Bosch, “Invading Norway.”
Let the Big Dawg Eat
May 2nd, 20112:09 pm
Invading Norway might not be a bad idea, actually.
May 2nd, 20112:42 pm
Bravo………especially to the soldiers!
May 2nd, 20112:53 pm
Obama’s body was washed and placed in a white sheet to adhere to Islamic Law. Donald Trump was taken along on the mission to complete that task.
May 2nd, 20112:55 pm
This looks like something you slapped together in 30 minutes.
Next time, take a little time to think before rushing out some
May 2nd, 20113:23 pm
With a little thought you could have drawn Obama accepting his Nobel Peace Prize in one hand and commanding three wars with the other.
May 2nd, 20113:44 pm
You folks have way too much time on your hands.
Home School Drop Out
May 2nd, 20114:07 pm
Ollie North was on FOX today.
He gave the CREDIT of the operation to President Ronald Reagan.
Sorry Ollie; but BARACK OBAMA is THE Man.
May 2nd, 20114:13 pm
Thanks for opening the comments, Mike. I’ve always enjoyed your cartoons, even the ones I didn’t agree with. The President could cure cancer and people aren’t going to give him credit. Yes, it was the actions of the Navy SEALS that got the job done, but it was Obama that choose that route instead of dropping a bomb and hoping for the best, like they did the first time in search of Saddam.
May 2nd, 20114:54 pm
Great toon Mike.
May 2nd, 20114:59 pm
You are hands down (or up so you can keep drawing) the best Mike!
May 2nd, 20115:10 pm
May 1, 2003 – G W Bush said Mission Accomplished. May 1, 2011 – Mission is finally accomplished.
May 2nd, 20116:01 pm
Mike, your “liberty crying” cartoon was/is my iconic poster for THAT day – would love to see you do a follow up for this mission accomplished. Love your work.
May 2nd, 20116:18 pm
I wasn’t comparing them, simply stating that the comment “Mission Accomplished” was in reference to two different events and I didn’t think Mike was trying to throw the statement in Bush’s face. If he’d have said something like “Mission Finally Accomplished” then I would have thought it a slam.
May 4th, 201112:56 pm
hello everyone. i’m officially online now.
May 4th, 20111:12 pm
while i’m sitting here waiting for someone to decide to ask my a question, i’m drawing my cartoon for tomorrow, featuring that couple i always draw. it’s about obama.
May 4th, 20111:14 pm
Hi, Mike, I’m wondering about the process you went through — and how long it took — to produce the “Mission Accomplished” cartoon after bin Laden’s death.
May 4th, 20111:17 pm
it’s about dam’ time someone asked a question. thanks A neighbor. the ajc called me mon. morning asking me to come in early, instead of noon, to get a cartoon up at ajc.com. at home at 6:60 or so, i came up with it and went to the ajc and had it drawn by 8am. inever come up with ideas that quick!
I am sure you get plenty of fan mail, but have you ever had to apologize for one of your cartoons?
May 4th, 20111:19 pm
hi mari. once when i did a cartoon making fun of n. georgians, then gov zell miller wrote me an impassioned letter, pointing out how unfair it was. he was right, so i wrote zell an apology. that’s the only time.
May 4th, 20111:30 pm
Hi Mike. Do you prefer reading fiction or nonfiction books, and what are you reading right now?
May 4th, 20111:31 pm
Is your favorite couple(short guy , high hair woman) reminiscent of a couple that you knew?
Do you know anything about Middle Eastern political cartoonists? How would they view bin Laden’s death?
May 4th, 20111:34 pm
i prefer nonfiction. i recently finished “matterhorn” about the vietnam war. it was fiction, but based on what the war was really like
May 4th, 20111:35 pm
Love the cartoons you do of recently deceased public figures reaching the Pearly Gates. Would love to see a similar one for Bin Laden…..minus the Pearly Gates of course.
curt, the couple is loosely based on my wife and i, although neither of us look like that. the wife’s the smarter one just like in my household.
May 4th, 20111:38 pm
i’ll check out matterhorn. i find that era and the pentagon papers and such fascinating.
May 4th, 20111:39 pm
teddy, on monday i did a cartoon with a toe tag on osama saying “mission accomplished.” i also came up with one i was going to do tues. showing satan saying to osama, “here’s your 72 virgins,” and pointing to a group of ugly monsters, but i saw someone did something similar, so i scraped the idea.
May 4th, 20111:40 pm
Is it your intention to actually reach people with your cartoons, make them think (differently) about issues or do you feel as an artist who created something beautiful that needs to be published?
“matterhorn” is a great book. someone also recommended a book on vietnam called “dispatches” by michael herr or hern. another book i’ve started is hemingway’s “a moveable feast.”
May 4th, 20111:44 pm
hi jan, good question. sometimes my cartoons are to show what i believe is the truth, hopefully, exposing the lies of politicians. and if i can do it in a funny way, all the better. newt g. has always been a favorite target. everything he says is cynical bull.
May 4th, 20111:45 pm
My office loves your illustrations of college life these days (teaching in stadiums, students crawling over each other to get a seat in class). We’re under tons of stress to spread our few resources around as much as we can, so we’ve posted your drawings in the office for comic relief. Thank you for helping us get through the day!
j-aut’s question about Middle East cartoonists is interesting. Do you follow work of cartoonists in other countries?
May 4th, 20111:46 pm
ajc.com had Osama on the rooftop posted on Monday which I thought was your official Osama’s dead cartoon. I didn’t understand it but see now that it was actually done before 9/11. What was that image about?
j-aut, i do know some middle eastern political cartoonists. there’s a jewish and muslim cartoonist that travel around speakingtogether. naturally, i can’t remember their names. i think the jewish guy’s named kitcha, or something.
May 4th, 20111:48 pm
thanks cindy. i hope things improve for education soon.
May 4th, 20111:49 pm
elle, that was one i did close to christmas in 2001, i think. it shows osama on a roof with a bazooka on his shoulder waiting for santa.
May 4th, 20111:51 pm
I will check those out as well. There are interesting links between that era and the 9/11 era. For example, here’s Daniel Ellsburg calling for a new investigation of the events of that day:
May 4th, 20111:52 pm
Hello Mike…I may be one of the few conservatives out here who really does appreciate your cartoons. A few have even opened my eyes a bit and widened my perspective. Unlike many of your haters, I know your drawings are an opinion piece and are subjective to your own view of the world. As such, I have no problem with the fact that they often take a leftist view on most of today’s issues. I do think you tend to be a good bit harder on the right when you point out their flaws, and, conversely, a bit easier on the left when highlighting their gaffes. That said, it doesn’t bother me at all…it’s your sketch.
I do want to say thanks for taking time with the troops overseas a few months back. I have two nephews serving our country, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, and they’ve shared how much means when people visit them. It sort of keeps them plugged into life back home and just makes it all a bit easier.
How do I go about getting a cartoon? Either as a print or as an original? Signed?
And, finally, what inspired you to keep shrinking George W throughout his presidency? I personally thought the changes to his head and ears were hilarious.
Thanks Mike, keep up the good work! I have your work on the walls of my study, specifically your “American Scapegoats” cartoon. If only more people would listen…
A neighbor, i don’t check out that many cartoons from around the world, mainly because their approach to humor is different than ours.
May 4th, 20111:56 pm
Do you ever use fan ideas in creating your drawings or do you try to use your own inspirations?
May 4th, 20111:58 pm
ChewDawg thank you for your kind comments. often people tell me that i’m biased, but that’s an editorial cartoonists job description. i’m glad you get that. as far as getting a print or original you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and let me know what cartoons you might be interested in and i’ll see if i still have them.
as to your last question, i didn’t think w was a very good president, so over the years he just shrank, as his ears enlarged.
thanks everyone for the questions. see you next wed at 1.
May 4th, 20111:59 pm
Hey mike… since Obama won’t release the bin Laden photos… can you release an artist’s rendering?
June 8th, 201112:55 pm
hey Mike….great cartoon today….one of the best ever….love your work and look forward to it each morning.
June 8th, 201112:56 pm
hi everyone. i’m online now. ask me a question.
June 8th, 201112:59 pm
Which funny people do you follow and enjoy. I would assume one would be Jon Stewart?
June 8th, 20111:01 pm
I loved your cartoons about the whole Weiner issue. I really liked the cartoon you did a few weeks ago about Arnold Schwarzenegger coming from the future to “kick himself in the butt”. LOL!!!
Do you think should Anthony Weiner should resign now?
June 8th, 20111:03 pm
thanks native atlantan, i got an email this morning from a reader saying that revere’s ride WAS to warn the british. people can be amazingly dumb.
Several of your cartoons feature a man and a woman commenting on a news topic or issue. Out of curiosity, do these people have names (you may have written them in before and I just missed it) and who was the muse for their creation?
June 8th, 20111:06 pm
weiner’s a huge disappointment. another example of stupidity. vitter didn’t resign and he actually had sex with prostitutes. weiner’s constituent’s will soon get to decide whether they want him to remain.
June 8th, 20111:07 pm
good grief, i’ve never named them, but there was once an ajc reader contest to name them. the winning entry was “Ebb and Flo.”
June 8th, 20111:10 pm
haha, thank you. every day is fun for me. sometimes the topics are harder to draw cartoons on than others, but this job’s always a blast. i may do something today on delta charging those troops a baggage fee. what a bad pr move.
June 8th, 20111:21 pm
How about how the media goes for what brings ratings, instead of going for what is most important regarding the progression of ethics (the only thing worth living for); do you agree that is a problem created by capitalist driven commercial media which is beholden to share holders instead of to wellbeing at large?
Mike you have only one side to your humor and that’s the liberal perverted corrupt democrats attack on conservatives. You are so bias. Just like the rest of the corrupt lamestreet media. AJC and the racist Cynthia Tucker as well. How come you don’t make fun of Obama and his thugs in his administration?
June 8th, 20111:25 pm
I’ll chime in here: Mike is biased, as we all should be, in favor of evidence-based rational thinking in some important regards anyway. Everyone should be biased against conservative thinking: we should all be intellectually liberal & morally liberal!
June 8th, 20111:28 pm
I’ll also ad, “Obama & his thugs” is racial language; it’s like that phrase “Obama’s drive-by administration”… racist tongue-in-cheek language. President Obama’s work isn’t excellent, but compared to the conservative alternative he does a great job… Mike makes fun of President Obama, but making fun of each side in politics, equally, is not called for always, because each side is not equally stupid, ignorant and/or immoral.
June 8th, 20111:30 pm
TruthBe, give me a few examples or any examples of cynthia’s racism. the cartoon i drew yesterday hit anthony weiner, a democrat. you’re correct about me being a “liberal perverted corrupt democrat.” that’s what’s printed on my business card.
June 8th, 20111:31 pm
Toby, i don’t even need to be on this live-chat. you’re responses are better than any i could come up with!
June 8th, 20111:32 pm
that’s funny reebok. i wasn’t going to mention that.
still waiting for TruthBe to supply a list of Cynthia Tucker’s racist statements….
June 8th, 20111:35 pm
You may be asking too much, Mike…looking for rational thought from someone who types “You are so bias.”
June 8th, 20111:39 pm
To today’s commenters from a blog administrator: We’re having trouble with the posting time of some of the comments, as some of you may have noticed. Sometimes the response to a comment may post before the intial comment. Our tech people are working on the problem. Sorry for the inconvenience.
June 8th, 20111:40 pm
Great work as usual. I definitely think you should hit on the Delta-soldier baggage fee.
June 8th, 20111:44 pm
My granddaddy always said, “A struck dog will holler.” Mike, you make the hypocrites holler. You’ve done great work all these years, and I just want to say thanks for all these years of laughs.
June 8th, 20111:45 pm
JoeV, that really is outrageous, plus it’s a perfect local topic.
Hindu Elvis Pimp
Thank you….Thank you very much.
June 8th, 20111:46 pm
And please come again!
June 8th, 20111:48 pm
Sorry had to take so business calls. Mike all you have to do is read her column. Almost everything she writes about is black this or black that. I should have said that she is also mean spirited as well. Mike here’s a challenge let’s see if you have the backbone to go away Obama and his administration with your cartoons during this up comming election. There is SO much material with this jackass of a President who is a complete fauld. Mike I know you have talent but so do I. I’m not a profressional cartoonist like you but I was my schools cartoonist in HS and College.
June 8th, 20111:49 pm
Sorry after instead of away. Too fast on the keys.
June 8th, 20111:51 pm
Good Grief, ther probably is some sort of criteria, but i’m not sure what it is. probably no nasty words , or emiled photos of crotches.
June 8th, 20111:53 pm
Mike, what are your criteria for moderating comments in this forum?
June 8th, 20111:54 pm
TruthBe, THAT’s your evidence cynthia is racist???? she writes about, “black this or black that.” Huh? you’re going to have to be a little more specific.
thanks for your comments everyone.
June 8th, 20111:55 pm
Hindu Elvis Pimp has left the blogging.
June 8th, 20111:58 pm
@TruthBe — High School AND College? Yikes…..
Curious Observer, i like the negative comments. i think i have something wrong with me.

hello everyone, i’m online now to answer all your questions about taxes, cooking and yeast infections.
October 19th, 20111:03 pm
What is the leading cause for yeast infections and how do I avoid getting one?
October 19th, 20111:05 pm
fred i’m glad you had the courage to ask. stay away from rising bread dough.
October 19th, 20111:06 pm
I thought your September 30th was an instant classic, and certainly spot on. How about one one the “main steam media” lie that the whack jobs always use. isn’t Fox “main stream media?” Isn’t there a FOX news show at every network affiliated station nation wide? Isn’t THAT “main stream” lol?
October 19th, 20111:07 pm
Advice for someone who can’t draw a lick but enjoys coming up with funny headlines, nicknames, and crudely rendered photoshop pictures. Is there an emerging medium/platform similar to cartoonist for folks that can’t draw?
Hi Mike, I have a great idea for a cartoon on the GOP candidates/debates…
Have them all standing in a circle, like a circular firing squad, and they all shoot out a flag with sayings like: “did not”, “did so”, “nanny, nanny, boo boo” etc….
October 19th, 20111:08 pm
hell, if was just gonna be me and you, we could have just met at Manuel’s and had a beer while we talked.
October 19th, 20111:09 pm
thanks fred. i believe that’s the nose-picking “chokeahontas.”
October 19th, 20111:10 pm
good idea, rick. last night was the funnest debate yet.
October 19th, 20111:11 pm
Do you have certain templates laid out for how you draw re-occurring personalities i.e. Obama, Newt, etc? Or do you alter the physical characteristics often?
October 19th, 20111:12 pm
fauxfrankwren, there’s a website, thedailycartoonist.com. i saw a story about something that allows you to do political animations easily.
No Mike, it was the monoploy dude with his foot at the throat of the middle class talking about “class warfare.”
Sorry, Mike…I am not from atlanta, I happened to stumble on this!
October 19th, 20111:13 pm
oh good, fred, because the chokeahontas was kind of stupid. the class warfare cartoon you’re referring to is one of my favorites.
October 19th, 20111:14 pm
Why are you ultra liberal idiot that simply parrots what the dimocrats want you to say. Didn’t you learn to think for yourself? Or was it the government school indoctrination that did that to you?
I actually used to like your cartoons a bit, but when Bush was elected, like most dimocrats, you seem to have lost your grip on reality.
Here’s a great idea for a cartoon, you could have obama the lawless actually come up with an idea to fix the economy! or maybe not blame somebody else for a chance! Or maybe even have the dimocrats actually tell the truth for a change! Wow, wouldn’t that be funny!?
October 19th, 20111:16 pm
how about something on Herman the monster getting pissed about Cain not getting permission to be
the next Big Boob…………………….this country already has enough nuts……look at the GOP Debate!
October 19th, 20111:17 pm
hi jim it’s ok you’re not from atlanta. i don’t have templates for drawing recurring personalities. what i do is google images of say, obama, i choose one i like, then sit here at my computer and draw the image. i don’t pencil first. i learned to draw caricatures during the summers in college drawing people under the space needle in seattle.
October 19th, 20111:18 pm
How about a cartoon about someone who see’s Herman Cain’s face in their Godfather’s Pizza the way many folks in the South see Jesus in their burnt toast?
And thanks for the website Mike. Checking it out.
October 19th, 20111:19 pm
George is suffering from the let down empty brain syndrome that comes to him every day after Neal’s program has finished and Sean’s hasn’t come on yet. For three whole hours, 1-4, he has to think for himself………….
October 19th, 20111:20 pm
so george johnson, you didn’t like my george w bush cartoons. does that mean you think he was a good president? my favorite targets are idiots and hypocrites which the gop has a lot of right now. witness last night’s debate
October 19th, 20111:22 pm
What George said but without the name calling.
sonya, you can call me names if you want.
October 19th, 20111:23 pm
A Herman Cain Joe Clark-esque caricature with Cain weilding a bat with the numbers 9-9-9 imprinted on it. Cain using it to bash everyone with it because he certainly is bashing our ears with niene-niene-niene.
October 19th, 20111:24 pm
I visited Herman Cain’s website recently and was astounded that he actually acknowedged that his 999 plan is actually a segway to the “fairtax” hoax–the Boortz plan he misrepresents as ridding us all of the IRS but wouldn’t–some (un)civil servants somewhere would still need to preside over whatever gouge the federal gov’t comes up with to replace the current boondoggle. Have been waiting for you to notice the “bait and switch” and let the rest of the world in on his dastardly dirty little secrets–including zero corporate tax and zero capitol gains tax: it sounds like under the Herman Cain vision for America that the only people who should pay tax would end up being those who receive a W2 form each year.
October 19th, 20111:26 pm
sonya3, cain’s chance of being the gop nominee is 0-0-0.
Hi Mike, always enjoyed your political cartoons. I’m wondering, do you have any short anecdotes where you found out one of your pieces made a real difference? Comics can shape thought of course, any specific examples? Pulitzer prizes aside, of course.
October 19th, 20111:28 pm
l dodd, it does sound kind of like the boortz fair tax silliness.
October 19th, 20111:30 pm
ambassador dave, i’ve had politicians tell me my cartoons influenced them, but i just assumed they were lying.
October 19th, 20111:32 pm
thanks for reading my cartoons ambassador dave and congrats on your ambassadorship.
Speaking of hypocrites… Newt is a well-educated guy but I still remember that while he and the fellow (Livingston?–forget the name) who was to have replaced him as Speaker initially were both, at the same time they were ‘gettin’ their panties in a wad’ over that guy who was president at the time and stupid enough to act in a way that could have subjected him, the then president to blackmail efforts, were doing equally stupid stuff. Actually, that guy who was the GOP first choice to replace Newt as Speaker was even more brazen–he was doin’ a lobbyist! (if news reports I read at the time were true–likely, since he was ultimately not Newt’s replacement.) Newt is too bright to believe the right wing is that forgiving, so, Is Newt running for VP or some advisory position, ya think??
October 19th, 20111:35 pm
l dodd newt’s mouth is perpetually running. he’s fun to watch, because he’s super humanly smug.
October 19th, 20111:36 pm
Fred: Thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth; ya’ might be careful where you put yours.
October 19th, 20111:39 pm
George: You’re clearly not workin’ class folk or you’d know that it’s harder to fix stuff if someone else took your tools ($) and scattered ‘em all over the mideast (yeah, Bush).
October 19th, 20111:40 pm
l dodd, i think george went into hiding.
The United States of China
October 19th, 20111:41 pm
My absolute fave was the one where Obama is sitting at the White House dinner with the president of China, and Obama asks if he can borrow a few to cover the tab! It was SO funny (and true) that I sent it to a few friends! Definitely a classic worthy of framing!
October 19th, 20111:45 pm
didn’t you do a series of Game Day Programs for GT back in the 80s?
Those were very entertaining.
October 19th, 20111:47 pm
thanks, united states of china, i love doing this job. it’s pressure trying to come up with something good, but it’s always fun.
October 19th, 20111:48 pm
The Supreme Court decision that $ is free speach is a decision with the potential to seriously damage the right of the “99%” to be heard–advertising works, even if it is garbage being advertised. Those who do not have equal $ to BUY media time will, by necessity, resort to getting media time by protests. I suspect Occupy Wallstreet is just the first wave.
Do you have any inside info and cartoons on the drawing board to reflect this new reality?
October 19th, 20111:50 pm
gt dude, normally when someone compliments me for a cartoon i did, i say thank you, even if i didn’t actually do the cartoon. but in this case, i’m going to be honest and say no, i didn’t do those.
October 19th, 20111:52 pm
I enjoy all your cartoons and often agree strongly with some of your messages. Even when your message might not reflect my own sentiments on a subject, your cartoons make me think. Thank you for providing one of the very best parts of the AJC.
Please keep .em commin’.
October 19th, 20111:53 pm
l dodd, that’s true. i’ve done a number of occupy wall st. cartoons all ready. i think this is a big deal. corporate money is corrupting our political process. i’m proud of those americans across the country who have taken to the streets.

For us, the exciting thing about this find is that it gives us more chances to talk about the varied roles of women in the ancient church, and to relate ancient history to contemporary “hot topics.” Mike Lukovitch’s cartoon (apparently the first in what I’m sure will become a veritable slew of Jesus’ wife jokes, cartoons, TV shows, etc.) (Source) [...]
