Lunch with Luckovich: 1-2 p.m. today
readers seem to like sports cartoons and there’s been a lot of sports news lately. so i’ve drawn four sports cartoons this month.
The first was on the retirement of Bobby Cox.
I also drew one on the investigation of Viking QB Brett Favre.
And I’ve drawn two on the football situation at UGA.
One of Mark Richt whose Bulldogs weren’t doing so well at the time.
And today’s cartoon of the Bulldogs’ football player arrests.
We can talk about these or anything else on your mind until 2 p.m. today. By the way, I’ll be off next Wednesday, so we won’t have another Lunch with Luckovich for a couple of weeks.

hi everybody. knowing i’m doing this live-blogging thing today has forced me to work ahead, so i’ve got ideas on wall st. greed and nathan deal. not sure if i’ll use either, but glad i have ideas this early.

Wow, can’t believe college kids drink underage and get speeding tickets. This AJC BS is getting old. Can’t wait for it to go out of business … Try living in Athens. The cops will get you for ANYTHING.

Hi Mike – do you ever think about news stories that just go away? It seems like the public loses interest and so the media stops pursing big stories (not sure of the direction of cause). I wonder if you ever could use your platform to bring back issues that people have moved on from (i.e. oil spill, Mrs. Sherrod’s firing, etc.). I understand that’s kind of risky, but just a thought. Now that I think about it, you kind of did that with the recent WMD in the mirror one which was excellent…

Re: attention spans of American people, I agree. Do you think that is something that we have always dealt with, and will continue to deal with until the end of the world (aka 2012)? Is it getting worse – do you think it could get better?

Mike, has any of your subjects ever contacted you for an original work that you have done and was published in the paper? Also, has anyone ever in the past ever contacted you or your editors and requested something to be stopped?.

There seems to be a lot of hemming and hawing from Republicans and Conservadems about the budget deficit yet we don’t see them talking too much about the bulk of our discretionary funding — defense cuts. Maybe this’d make a good toon or two.

i was just thinking of cartoon ideas. it might be funny to do a cartoon of obama rescuing a miner lbeled u.s. economy, but then he can’t unlock the rescue capsule the miner’s in. does that even make sense?

probably the most angry responses come from cartoons i do on politics. if i do something on say rush limbaugh, his followers get very upset, which is odd, since rush spends a lot of time criticizing others.

Budget goes to the doctor for a checkup. Doctor says he’s overweight. His belly (spare tire) is labeled defense spending and he’s carrying two iron weights called “medicare” and “social security”, yet the doctor tells him his fingers (misc. departments) are too fat.
Nobody wants to talk about making cuts to defense, medicare and social security, yet any other cuts are just superficial and will get nowhere close to balancing the budget nor about raising taxes.

Okay – Obama is pushing the miner’s up from the bottom, and the GOP is at the top with banners celebrating their success. It drives me crazy that all the hard work and sacrifice by the dems is probably going to pay off when the GOP is in power, so they’ll get the credit. People expected such a quick fix (like your recent cartoon about the GOP driving the car into the ditch and the Dems not pulling it out fast enough).

The reason I asked about ownership of drawings is because Robert Arial, here in Columbia, SC makes prints, posters, etc. of his and sells them. Have you ever thought about that? Do you know Arial?

Mike, your sketches are often more insightful and potentially subversive in comparison to common journalisic standards. To what do you attribute this extra permissiveness? If it makes us laugh, is it less threatening to your editors et al?

Mike, I loved your cartoon on FoxNews and the GOP’s sharing the same secretary.
Do you think that you could do one on these big GOP donors, who fund the TEA Party and the 527 groups–with patriotic-sounding names–producing the TV ads attacking the Democratic candidates? Their anonymity allows them to influence elections with deception, half-truths and outright lies. The ads trick working-class folks into voting against their own best self-interests (and, consequently, vote for the interests of people who oppress them, i.e., the super-rich. It’s too complicated for any of us to understand completely, but one of your great cartoons might boil it down to the picture that we can all see. Any ideas?

Mike, I love your cartoons. I see them in the Akron and Cleveland papers and online. Do you know Jack Davis? I have loved his work over the years for Mad, Time, TV Guide, etc. How is he? I’ve never met him, but I’ve seen him in a couple videos and he just seems like a great guy. Does he still do any work for the Georgia Bulldogs?

steve, jack davis is an old friend of mine. he’s in his 80’s and despite a bad case of shingles went overseas to visit the troops. he’s an arch conservative, so we don’t see eye to eye politically, but we like each other. i mean, i think he likes me. now that i think about it, he could secretly hate me. you know how those mad magazine cartoonists are.

I think David Harris is totally onto something. Defense spending is why we’re in the deficits we’re in. I understand why the GOP wants high defense spending, because the ways they shoot their mouths off and how they treat people, you need more defense.
But do we really need to spend in excess of $600 billion every year on defense?
It’s like our family bought a million dollar house but lost our job and are deciding to keep the house but get rid of all the furniture.

adam some of them are black. it’s hard to tell because they’re small in the drawing and wearing helmets. i probably should’ve labeled the white guys “white” and the black guys “black” to clear up any confusion.
