Bama’s runners, Saban’s gaffe and a classic SEC title game

1. Alabama shattered the SEC Championship game record for yards rushing. The Tide ran for 350 yards, with two backs — game MVP Eddie Lacy and backup T.J. Yeldon — each going way over 100. (Lacy had 181, Yeldon 153.) And it was, almost inevitably, the fear of the Alabama ground game that spawned the Tide’s winning touchdown. AJ McCarron threw deep to Amari Cooper, who had run past Damain Swann, for the winning touchdown with 3:15 to play. But Alabama couldn’t run out the clock inside the final two minutes, and it nearly cost the Tide the game.
2. Even the best in the business sometimes whiffs. Alabama coach Nick Saban waited until five seconds remained in the first half to use his first timeout. After converting on third-and-2 at the Georgia 39 with 42 seconds left, the Crimson Tide allowed the clock to tick under 30 seconds before snapping the ball again. AJ McCarron’s 22-yard scramble to the Georgia 5 came too late for the Tide to do anything but kick a field goal, which put Bama ahead — but by three points, not seven.
3. This SEC Championship game matchup was one of the best in the event’s 21-year history. The 1994 pairing of No. 6 Florida versus No. 3 Alabama has always been considered a high point by conference insiders, given that it was the first time the game had been staged in the Georgia Dome and the game itself — Florida won 24-23 — was a stone-cold classic. The two No. 1 against No. 2 games between Alabama and Florida — the Gators won in 2008, the Tide in 2009 — are likewise high points, but this game featured No. 2 against No. 3 in a BCS play-in, and it also featured two storied programs that had never collided in such a setting. No wonder tickets were reselling for crazy money. Gary Stokan of the Chick-fil-A Bowl spoke to an Alabama booster club in Atlanta on Thursday and witnessed four tickets for Saturday’s game auctioned for $7,000. (Oh, and the game itself: The best SEC Championship ever.)

After the completion to the TE to the 15, one camera angle caught Aaron Murray running up to the line of scrimmage and signaling that he was going to spike the ball.
The ball was not spiked to stop the clock. Why?

Georgia played a heck of a game. But you have to wonder what this loss will do to the psyche of the UGA players for next year. They were so close this year and just didn’t get it done. Most of the defense is gone, King, Brown are gone on offense, etc. UGA is likely headed to the Cotton Bowl. SC will go to the Capital One, LSU is headed for the Outback, and Florida is headed to the Sugar.

Bulldogs are going to the Peach Bowl aka Chick-Fil-A Bowl. It is not the National Championship game but it is as close as they can come to any championship bowl. If you do not win the SEC championship game, you are losers same as last year. Maybe 2018 (hint: 1942, 19080).

Magnificent football game. However, spike the ball and throw for the end zone might have made it even more interesting there at the end. Incredible game though. I think ‘Bama will be a good rep for the SEC in the BCS Championship Game.

Murray played as well as he ever has. The defense got gassed and the best oline in the game did their thing. Not being able to stop the run lost the game…not Murray.He is the reason we almost won

A&M’s going to the Cotton Bowl. We’ll probably be in the Cap One or Outback. That’ll be great consolation after this one. Ugh.
We should’ve spiked the ball at the end, but we should have thrown it on 3rd and 1 instead of running Gurley up the gut. Shawn Williams should have tackled Yeldon instead of letting a freshman punk him for six yards on 3rd and 5. We deserved to lose this game because of how well Bama ran the ball, but we certainly had a chance to win this game. We blew it. Period. End of story.

What sort of leadership is that? Seems that Richt was not sure what to do at the end of the game. Why spike the ball and then actually coach when you can let 20-year-old kids freelance the championship play away? I’m not from GA and don’t care who won, but that was the dumbest coaching decision I have ever seen in my life at any level? Did he think he could really run four plays in ten seconds? UGA’s defense is trash, but Richt did not even live up to his own players’ efforts.
You can say that there were many plays in the game, but you can’t argue that everything rode on that single play when it took place. What a disgrace. It must hurt bad to be a UGA fan. A BCS birth is not certain now. You lost the SEC, a place in the title game, and possibly a BCS birth. But, on a positive note, the nation was hoping for ND and BAMA–the two most historic teams will face off. You made many people happy with your loss.

UGA played only 3 decent teams all year. got blown out by one (SC), got one given to them by FL, and lost to AL. Nice rush defense, NOT. UGA not as good as you think. 3rd in East and 5th in SEC.

1st things first. To Big Gator: get used to being on the outside looking in for a long time to come with Muschump. As hard as this loss was, knowing we beat you guys helps make up for it. As for the last play, I don’t care what anyone says that was a bad call. Spike the ball, get two plays. That gives you time to tell the receivers if the ball is caught outside of the endzone bat it down. Still might not have won but at least we would have had a shot. And please get a new kicker for next year. I know Murray has the stats, he doesn’t have the “it” factor like Greene, Shockley, Stafford, etc. He seems to panic in big moments. My fear is he will be back next year and unfortunately we don’t have a soft schedule to hide it.

That was a spectacular game. This was not the Georgia team of the last few years that nearly always folded in the big game. Even with Alabama’s offensive line and running backs pounding them they hung in and didn’t quit. It was like a great heavyweight fight. As an Alabama grad and fan I was happy to see Alabama finally get back to a smash mouth running game circa 2008-09 even if it took not being able to handle the Georgia pass rush early in the game to get them to do it.

I have been saying this all year, once the players on this current UGA squad leave after this year for the NFL, there will be some major drop offs in UGA defense. Will Grantham hang around long enough to rebuild that unit? It may be a few more years before we see UGA back in the title game.
Cotton Bowl destination just does not seem right for the Dawgs.

The bulldogs played their hearts. I think the coaching staff had them ready to play. Murray played a good ballgame. UGA still needs to build from the inside out, meaning 4 and 5 star offensive and defensive linemen. With 15 seconds, if you spike the ball you probably have time for 3 passes to the endzone, or mabybe 2 passes and a draw to Gurley.

Guys after listening to coach Richt and seeing replay she play was great throw when Bama expect a spike to outside receiver crisscross! The ball was tipped so it fell to Conley who was running to the end zone on crossing pattern. Great year and know that we did not lay down our defensive depth was tested against the run but we definitely stretched the field against Bama. Love my dawgs!!!!!!! Great year coach Richt!!!!!!

Great game by GA and Bama…UGA fought hard, but came up short..2 things that I noticed in the game which was huge…UGA defensive line was steam rolled and gashed for 350yds against the run..misclock management at the end of drive by UGA at 5 was horrible..with no timeouts, design a play for your quarterback to throw the ball in the endzone and give your receivers a chance to win..UGA need to work on stopping the run next year, but uga fans should be proud of the doggs for a winning season…there’s always next year.

What a collection of no-nothing fans. The last play was a back shoulder throw to a receiver in the end zone, and it looked open. Unfortunately for UGA, the ball was tipped at the line and wound up being caught by the receiver in the flat. Maybe he shouldn’t have caught it. Maybe UGA should have spiked the ball. That’s football. As a non-UGA, non-Bama fan, I just want to thank both teams for playing their hearts out. What a great game. No one needs to hang their heads over this one. The reason you spike the ball is that the clock stops on a first down in college football, and oh, by the way we had no timeouts. It is called situational football. If you were paying attention, CMR allowed the same thing to happen two plays prior and it cost us 9 more seconds. This is a hallmark of a CMR-coached team. It is inexcusable that CMR did not have his team ready for the situation. It was the BEST chance his team had to take a shot at the win. Those are the facts. CMR blew it!!!! Say what you want, but I am tired to the mediocrity, so go ahead and make excuses and we will have another lost decade of UGA football. We didn’t blow it…end of story, etc., as Hairy Dawg states it.
We simply ran out of town. the last play…pass was deflected. received caught it. The only way to stop the clock was to get it back to the line of scrimmage, get into formation…Murray to spike the ball. Remember, we used up all of our time outs when we stopped Alabama. Thus, we had no TOs left…It was a very hard-fought, tough game. i am a die-hard Dawg fan…feel for GA right now…and all I can say is GO IRISH and beat BAMA… GA has had one helluva year…now…

Don’t forget the refs. Murray gets a cheap shot to the head as he is jogging off the field and there is not penalty, bama’s qb gets hit in the head a second after he releases the ball 15 yards. This is with a ref walking right behind murray.
Throughout the game UGA wr’s were getting hit before the ball got to them and no pass interference penalties. King actually caught one where he got hit hard before he caught it. UGA’s swann, I think it is swann, gets called for pass interference but it is not by the ref right beside him, it is the one across the field.
Finally, want to know one of the reasons bama ran so good? It’s easy to run when your line is holding. You’re supposed to keep your hands inside, not bear hugging the defensive players.

No need to spike the ball, Dawgs knew what they wanted to do, Bama made the play, tipped the ball. Maybe the receiver should have had the instincts to bat the ball down, doesn’t matter. The game was lost by our inability to stop the Bama running game. They have a great Oline. Dawgs represented themselves well.
Can’t believe all the respect shown to the Dawgs by trolls from all over showing their jealousy of our success.

UGA played a very good game – good enough to win. But they are not one of the best teams in the country – not with that awful schedule.
Until tonight they played two meaningful games — in one they were murdered, and in the other the opponent decided to turn it over 6 times. And now they are 1-3 in ‘big’ games this year. Yes, they have talent, but very much overrated compared to other teams this season.

Good game. Both teams acquitted themselves well. Either would have represented the SEC well against Notre Dame. Anyone who starts the “fire Richt” nonsense should have his head examined. His team simply met up with another team that was every bit as good as the DAWGS. You can always find something you disagree with in a game, but I am satisfied that each team belonged in this game. The BCS game between the Irish and Tide should be a classic. Bring it home to the SEC, Alabama!!

if i hear another radio announcer, fan, commentator say uga deserves a BCS bowl bid over florida i will explode. UF 4-1 vs BCS top 12, UGA 1-2. Florida coming off a stretch of beating USC, LSU and vandy away turns the ball over SIX times and twice in the endzone and BARELY loses to UGA. UGA gets blown out by USC, has a bye, slips by UK and has to win ONE game all year to make it to atlanta and they barely do that. SIX turnovers and the game came down to the last play. With 6 turnovers you should win by 4 touchdowns… so no, UGA doesn’t deserve a BCS bowl game over florida..

This strongly Bama partisan fan is proud of our win, but Georgia has nothing to be ashamed of – they played a great game, and certainly the game could have gone either way.
As for the Bulldog fans who gripe about partisan refs favoring The Tide – get real. These great SEC refs are human, and might make mistakes at times, but they would not be stupid enough to flagrantly favor one team over another, and thus purposely make a wrong call.
Now let’s all us SEC’ers pull together for ALL of our teams in the upcoming games. I’ll certainly be rooting for the Bulldogs!

best football game i’ve ever seen. that last tipped pass was just an awesome effort by the alabama d-lineman to elevate and get a hand on the ball. amazing game, went all the way down to the end. no tipped pass, uga wins by three… literally play of the game. the tip meant more than 350 yards rushing, blocked fg, interception in the end zone…. all meaningless in comparison.

I cringed as the clock ran from 15 seconds to 9 seconds while we lined up in the shotgun…same as previous play when we lost 6 seconds, I believe, lining up. Hurry up was great, but we needed time in that scenario. Otherwise, the Dogs gave Bama all they could handle. How fouled up is the system that Florida, a team that lost to Ga will end up in a better bowl.
Nice season. I’ll have to pull for the Tide…..Notre Dame will get rocked!

While everyone seems to be so focused on how Alabama ran the ball, if they were so great why was Georgia running up and down the field on them all night so I think some of these people need to get a grip.
But, something that no one has mentioned is the non-call on roughing the passer when they hit Murray on the interception at the end of the first half. I still wonder, given the length of the pass, whether the interception would have been overturned since the roughing the passer would have probably happened first-that is, if they had called it. At worst it would have penalized them 15 yards and may have altered that field goal. That would have left Georgia needing a field goal at the end instead of a touchdown. I still cannot believe they did not call that after calling it against Georgia earlier. As always, some teams get the benefit of ref’s calls that affect the outcome and I would like to hear some Bama fan say that shouldn’t have been called.
Just wondering what the ruling on that would have been.

The fact is you controlled your own destiny. If you won last night, you play for the BCS Championship Game against Notre Dame and have a chance to win your first National Championship in 32 years. If you lost, you knew that you would fall behind Florida in the BCS rankings and not be eligible for a BCS bowl (no conference gets to send more than two teams). You knew this for over a week.
Everyone in college football knows that the BCS system is a crap shoot and that’s why it is being shelved in 2 more years. It sucks now, but it is what it is-an “everybody wins a trophy” type of system. While wanna bees like Louisville etc., get rewarded for underachievement, georgia needs to go to the Cotton Bowl, beat Texas by 30 and finish up a legitimate top 5 team! Think of where you came from just a few short years ago!
I could not be more proud of your players and coaches. They are top notch, though I think Grantham should have made adjustments and lined up Jarvis Jones in the middle instead of outside in the 2nd half. Same run defense, just more inside stunts and different looks for Alabama’s massive offensive line to contend with.
Nevertheless, Grantham is a great coach and georgia prepared for and played a tremendous game in the national spotlight. They won the hearts of many outside of the dog Nation (use Google and see for yourself). Coach Richt, Bobo, Grantham and company have brought you all the way back to national prominence. You can now compete NATIONALLY on the field and in the living room of the best recruits in America!
However, though I have gained a lot of respect for the Georgia program, I would not hesitate rolling one of you if you bark in my face in public.

I’m never a proponent of going for 2 unless you absolutely need to. That said, what a different game ending it might have been had Bama simply kicked the extra point when they scored in the 3rd quarter to make it 21-16. Of course, if they had been unsuccessful on the conversion, a UGA spike and a field goal places them in the NC game.

UGA fans love their dawgs but not with animosity that LSU, AuB, and FLA fans have against Bama, and I always appreciated that. I want to give credit to Georgia. All year long, I have been talking bad about yall and sayin I hoped we would play yall in the SEC title game so we could embarrass you. That didn’t happen and yall showed yall were a legitimately good team. It made for a great game and it all came down to coaching advantage and not to sound like an annoying Bama fan, but Richt has nothing on Saban, whether you like the guy or not, lets be real. The call at the end to not spike the ball was a terrible one. Georgia has needed to get rid of Richt for a long time and honestly, when Kirby Smart leaves, I would prefer him to be at Georgia and if UGA went on and would do it (which they wont since Richt has had two great seasons recently) they could probably get him. Why in the world would anybody think that a team running an up tempo offense with a play already called against a disorganized defense should spike the ball and let the defense catch its breath? The play was a fade route to the corner of the end zone and the ball was tipped. It takes exactly the same amount of time to line up and spike the ball as it does to line up and throw a fade. Why in the world was Buck Belue so stupid as to throw the ball to Lindsey Scott? Why didn’t he just throw the ball away and call a better play on 4th down rather than to throw into the middle of quadruple coverage? Because stuff happens in football. I have yet to see a receiver catch a spiked ball for a touchdown. i’ve seen plenty of receivers catch fades for touchdowns. The fade was definitely the better of the two options. It just didn’t work out.

Funny how you try to twist things Mark. Saban quickly admitted he did a poor job of managing the clock before he went into the halftime dressing room. Richt could have possibly lost the game at the end because of poor management of the clock. When asked Richt about it after the game, he didn’t take credit, he just acted like a ass. Somebody had to ask Richt, so dont blame it on the reporter.

The ball had already been picked off. When that happens then is the QB becomes a defensive player.
He just got the crap knocked out him AFTER the pick. Not while he was following thru with his pass.

I don’t dislike Bama, just the DA talk, ya’ll didnt exactly have the toughest schedule either….LSU and T A&M, please dont say Michigan lol, you play who is there. we were set to play Bama til we got the Missouri sucks shoved in our conference and had to play them

I don’t think no other SEC team could have played the Tides Like the Dawgs ! I you can say BAMA fan wasn’t sweating defeat, that would be crap ! The dawgs played well ! However if the Dawgs could have adjust to the run, that would have been GREAT !!!!!!! i STILL SAY, WHY THE dawgs didn;t SPIKE the Ball with 10 sec left in the game, that’s 2 plays to go for the win.
Remember, everyone thinking, BAMA was going to Blow pass the Dawgs. The Dawgs couldn’t stop them and BAMA couldn’t stop the Dawgs. That was one of the best SEC championships games played in History…… Go Dawgs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
