Live from the Dome: Favored Bama meets hungry Dogs!

At the SEC Coaches’ Luncheon at the Hyatt on Friday, emcee Dave Neal asked Nick Saban if it was easier to keep a team motivated as a favorite, or if being an underdog was preferable. Whereupon Mark Richt said, “What does he know about being an underdog?”
Saban’s Crimson Tide is favored today by eight points over Richt’s Bulldogs, but an awful lot of folks — this correspondent included — are picking Georgia. Still, this matchup couldn’t have caught Saban unaware.
“Last summer I was at the lake (Burton, where every big-name college football coach has a summer house) and I was fooling around in the yard, and two guys rode up on JetSkis,” Saban told Richt at the luncheon. “One of them was your quarterback Aaron Murray and the other was your center (David Andrews). And they said, ‘We’ll see you in the SEC championship game.’ ”
And here both teams are, Alabama ranked No. 2 to Georgia’s No. 2, Alabama favored but not nearly a lock, Georgia trying to seize its biggest football moment in three decades. But you knew all that already. So enough of me talking.
I’ll be here until someone is the 2012 SEC champ, and I’d appreciate it if you’d join the fun and frolic. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

Dawgs will win because they are the hungrier team. Bama has won 2 of the past 3 national titles and yes they may want to win, but it’s human nature not to have that same hunger you once had after you’ve won it before. Georgia is hungrier, they want to prove that they are good enough. I think UGA wins by 10.

Great, now Saban will have NCAA investigators looking into how Murray got a JetSki, which will end with him being retroactively declared ineligible in 2024, which will mean we’ll have to vacate our wins from this year.

Remember, last year in the SEC title game, Georgia dominated LSU in the 1st half…they held LSU to no first downs and like 12 yards total offense in the 1st half…2nd half got away from them due to turnovers and Tyrann Mathieu’s punt returns, one for a touchdown. Georgia just needs to finish this time around. Alabama doesn’t have a dynamic pass rusher, they don’t have that one guy on defense that really makes you say “Wow, we gotta make sure we get rid of him!”…Bama is a great team, but they can be beat.

Last year’s LSU defense is much better than this year’s Alabama defense. LSU’s defense last year had Morris Claiborne, Tyrann Matheiu, Michael Brockers, Montgomery, Mingo, Minter, Simon, Ryan Baker, Bennie Logan, etc….all star type players…Bama doesn’t really have that much firepower on their defense. If not for two dropped balls by UGA receivers, UGA could have gone up 21-0 on LSU in a heartbeat and who knows? So not giving UGA a chance in this game is a huge mistake.

Aaron Murray is by far the better qb. 2 years ago he had a terrible line and zero running game. So any production from the O was all on him as a 1st time starter redshirt freshman. also the D was barnd new with people who didn`t know where to go or what to do IF they got there. Last year he was a 2nd year starter with a bad line and again NO Running Game! Again everything was on him to produce when his best reciever was a true freshman. He has not been blessed with the Ala line,RB,D, etc for all his years until now. But now his recievers have been marginal for a good part of the year with the best on the sidelines injured. McCarron hasn`t had to carry his offense even one time as a starter. McCarron can`t even begin to compare careers as a starter. With help from a strong supporting cast Murray will win today…..just like every other college qb has to have to become champion.

Nick Saban knows it’s coming…I could sense it in his speeches throughout the week. He knows what UGA brings to the table. 7-8 NFL potential NFL draft picks on defense…great rushing attack led by the best RB in the SEC in Todd Gurley (1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns, 1 on kick off return)…and Keith Marshall who is no slouch himself with 720 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns. The #1 QB in the nation in passing efficiency…and an O-line that while it may not be the most dominant, has improved throughout the season.

I’m a Tech fan and even though I can’t stand how much I’ve had to hear both the AJC and national media talk this week about how great UGA is, I have to admit that I will be pulling for them against Bama. Chase, you may not want to hear it but you got it wrong. Michigan was #11 in the country when we opened up the season against them and we broke their spirt and ruined Denard Robinson’s chance for the Heisman before it even really got going. Also, Mississippi State was undefeated when they can into Tuscaloosa. LSU had two weeks to get ready for Bama and we played them there at night. When is the last time Georgia has gone to LSU at night and beat them? We beat LSU on their home turf two games in row. Last year’s National Championship game then then this year. We lost to TAMU becaue AJ was under so much pressure and he was playing so tight. Since then he has been focused and on point just like he was during the NC game. That loss was a great loss for us and we needed it to let the pressure off of very young players. Georgia will see the result of that today. Here are Georgia’s wins this year: Buffalo, Missouri, Forida Atlantic, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Kentucky (barely), Forida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. Dude really? Can somebody explain what it is about headsets on players as they enter a stadium? It is at least annoying and at least rude for fans to wait, worshipfully, outside a venue and cheer and offer congratulations to the team only to have them glide by and acting like they could care less to even acknowledge the fans who are wishing them well. Can you imagine a guest speaker showing up at a school and entering an arena wearing a headset? Pretty conceited to me. They should at least have the courtesy to hear the fans when they get off the bus to the locker room door. Sportsmanship and sportsmen ain’t what they used to be.

Secondly, as I stated before, Alabama needed that loss to TAMU becasue McCarron was so tight he was starting to play very bad. Now that he has that loss under his belt, the pressure is off and he has be on every since. You Dawg fans will see that this year. We may have squeeked by LSU, but when is the last time Georgia went into LSU’s stadium at night and beat them after LSU had a full two weeks to get ready for them??????? That’s what I thought. Another key fact…last year UGA had no semblance of a running game. Crowell took himself out of the game after he got hit..and Carlton Thomas was too small to run against LSU’s defense last year. Murray had tons of pressure on him to move the ball on offense by himself. This year, we have Gurshall. Gurley will not come off the field unless he’s letting Marshall get carries. Gurley is tough and he’s going to carry the rock a lot in this one. The Dawgs running game will be the difference IMO.

Roy – good points. But more important is the Bulldawgs didn’t keep their focus against LSU. They didn’t against South Carolina either but I think they learned their lesson there and have been playing with intensity and purpose since then. Jarvis Jones had a chance to go to the NFL last year – this is what he came back for.

I wanted this game. I wanted to play Alabama. They are the gold standard in college football. Had we played LSU, even had we won, we still would have been told we couldn’t be Bama…or “had it been Bama we would have lost.” I’m glad it’s Bama and we get the chance to play who most feel is still the best team in CFB. We’ll see about that.

Bama may win this game today and it will not be because they have won 2 of the last 3 BCS games because most of those key players are gone. It will be because they play better today than my Dawgs. I think Saban is an exceptional recruiter and motivator but I doubt he is any better coach than Richt, Miles, Spurrier, or James Franklin for that matter. He recruits better and motivates his players better than most anyone else but make no mistake, he most of the time has superior talent than other coaches. If he is so much better than everyone else, does anyone think he would have gotten Vandy into this game today with the talent Vandy has right now. Could he have made a contender out of Auburn with their current roster? What about Arkansas? He runs a pro style offense and a 3-4 defense as many others do. What makes his X’s and O’s superior to other coaches? Go Dawgs!

It’s common knowledge and an unquestioned fact that UGA head football coach Mark Richt has brought shame on the state of Georgia and made an embarrassing laughingstock of the state’s largest university. Even the most avid UGA fans understand this even when they won’t acknowledge it, bless their hearts.
The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football factory, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence morons who can barely read, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win the big games.
Richt is a product of the lawless environments of the University of Miami and Florida State University, where he learned well how to conduct himself in the most sleazy way, while pretending to the world to be a saint. Make no mistake about it – Richt is in coaching purely for the millions of dollars that have been wasted on him, and the millions more he will add until someone in Athens has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to run him out of town.
A truly shameful situation, especially since all Georgians, including UGA alumni and fans, have to live under this shadow of infamy.

I will say this. The dawgs have certainly earned my respect for their first half play. They played hard and tough. I still think we just wear them out in the 2nd half but if the dawgs play as tough in the 2nd half as they did in the first half then they have a shot. I just think we have a substantial depth advantage, especially on defense.

There was an obvious block in the back against Georgia on a punt earlier in the game that wasn’t called. The officials don’t see everything. The replay officials can’t call fouls — they can only review what is called on the field.

Georgia had so many missed opportunities in the 1st half. Turnovers, bad play calling, getting away from the run game….we cannot come out in the 2nd half pass happy. Gotta stick to the running game. We do not want to become one dimensonal vs. Bama.

This is just like last year. IF UGA doesn’t score to start the half, it’s not going to be good. Alabama knows that they have worn the defense down and will be able to run at will. The Alabama coaches know Murray will not beat them, so they’ll key on the run until they know UGA is forced to pass, then pin their ears back and pressure Murray. Georgia may score a garbage TD after Alabama pulls away. Alabama 31-14. Should have scored when we had the chance.

This one is feeling too much like last year when the LSU run game got cranked up in the 2nd half. The only difference is the Dawgs are down 10-7 instead of up at the half. I’m hoping UGA can somehow get into the fourth within a score…will need the OL and Gurley to pull off some big runs. A big key is this first drive…last year, Murray fumbled on the first drive and the flood gates opened…need to have a good drive to start the half.

well in terms of not looking like 2011, in the first half Alabama has played better than LSU did. Georgia had 154 yards of first half offense compared to 158 in this game (though both Georgia teams missed a FG on their second possessions which is kinda funny).
To open the 2nd half last year: Georgia received the ball; fumbled and LSU would turn a 3 pt halftime deficit into a lead and that as they say would be that

Neither QB hit call/no-call were game changers. Just an indication that the refs are not calling it both ways. The talking heads are saying it should have been called and suggesting that 90 should be suspended for the next game by the SEC. I would give the proverbial snowball a better chance than that happening.

Regardless though a 15 yard penalty just means our kicker would have kicked that ball another 15 yards farther. It was straight down the middle and would have been good from 40. The Dawgs are playing very well, people. As is the Alabama team. The score is essentially tied, and would be except for the terrible non-call.
We are very much in this game. Neither team is playing with perfection, but does perfection ever happen in football. I am very happy we’re in a position to win the game if we continue playing well. And, we deserve a major break to make up for the terrible non-call.
I did not like our non-interception. I think we should defend against the pass more and attempt sometimes dangerous interceptions less; still, I’d bet we get an interception or two if we can put Alabama in position to have to pass.
We’ve got to improve a bit against the run, but we’re not doing bad in that department. Also, I’m not so sure we should be running up the middle so much; what about some pitch outs to hit the outside? A lot of what has to happen now involves coaching staff identifying vulnerable points.
It’s time for Bobo to make a quantum leap. Dude, don’t give CKS – your brother – bragging rights.
Being down by a field goal should get our guys even more fired up. What can we do to hurt the Tide?
At the half, it is a very close, and very much winnable game. All we have to do now is win the 2nd half, and we’re fully capable of getting the job done.

That noncall on Murrays hit didn’t cost you anything. The poor call on a pass that was clearly not tipped just changed the whole game. That was a 14 pt swing. I said before hand the only way you guys can win is with a lot of luck. And so far that’s the only reason you’re ahead.
