Heat Check: Destiny’s Dogs? No-bowl Jackets? Whoa, Nelly

Surrounded by the enemy: Tech's band in Athens. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Surrounded by the enemy: The Georgia Tech band in Sanford Stadium. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Our Heat Check arrives just in time to warm what promises to be a chilly week. Face facts, folks: There’s not much happening in local sports.

Kidding.

GEORGIA: Will play for the BCS title — some guy I know predicted they would — with a victory over Alabama on Saturday. Barometric reading: Three weeks ago, people were saying the Bulldogs would have no chance against the mighty Tide. A lot of those same people seem to have changed their minds, and I’m not just talking about Georgia fans. I’m talking about neutrals who see the Dogs as no less talented as Bama. Just as Bacarri Rambo said.

GEORGIA TECH: Paul Johnson now believes his Jackets didn’t give much of an effort in Athens. (Who knew, huh?) But if Tech can rouse itself to topple Florida State — maybe the nation’s most overrated team — in Charlotte on Saturday, the Jackets will be headed for what Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports calls potentially the worst BCS bowl matchup ever: Tech against Kent State. Seriously. Barometric reading: Then again, if Tech loses to the Seminoles, it might not grace any bowl. Tech insiders insist they’ll land in a bowl even at 6-7, but there now appears no guarantee their request for a waiver would be favorably met

FALCONS: Everyone around the team was heartened by the one-point escape from Tampa Bay, for good reason. It was a big-time win over a tough opponent, and the Falcons haven’t beaten many tough opponents … well, all season. Barometric reading: They can clinch the NFC South with a month to spare by beating hated New Orleans on Thursday and then watching the Buccaneers lose at Denver on Sunday.

HAWKS: Remember when it was suggested this team was about to embark on a nice little run? This team has embarked on a nice little run. Having won five in a row, the Hawks hold the fourth-best record in the NBA East. Barometric reading: Check the schedule. They might not lose again anytime soon.

BRAVES: Waiting for B.J. Upton to decide where he wants to play. The good news is that Upton has long been hailed as one of the game’s biggest talents. Barometric reading: The sabermetric reality is that Upton was half the player Michael Bourn was in 2012. According to FanGraphs, Bourn’s WAR (wins above replacement) rating was 6.5; Upton’s was 3.3.

The dark side of my personality would really like to see Tech beat FSU then lose to Kent State in the Orange Bowl. This has something to do with the stupid article Terence Moore wrote after FSU and Miami joined the ACC about how much better the ACC would be than the SEC.

Speaking of Terence, where is he these days?

Look, why don’t the coach and the administration realize that few fans would go to another disgusting bowl, but accept the program needs to improve or the coach needs to go. When you don’t bring in blue chip players, then you don’t win games. The arrogance shown by the coach indicates he should go, but when is the call of the administration.

Said it before and I’ll say it again, the best thing for Tech is to lose out (and I’m a Tech fan). Losing to FSU and IF they go to bowl, to lose there, would cement CPJ’s future and maybe we’d get a new coach for Christmas. I really do like CPJ, but his offense and recruiting just don’t cut it. It’s weird to root for your team to lose, but at this point we gotta think big picture.

Bama will beat the dogs and Fla will jump over them. If Ohio State wasn’t on probation, dogs wouldn’t be in the hunt. As it is, ND will be the champ this year, their defense is a killer. As for my beloved Jackets, ouch! This has been a tough year. I have so enjoyed the option offense and feel like we could rule the world with the right players. I still support CPJ even though most people don’t like him. I think Lee has got some real talent and could make a difference but defesne, geeze. We have none and that bites. So a bowl game? If GT beats FSU and Alabama beats Georgia, will that finally make the pollsters do the right thing and rank Oregon above both Florida and Georgia? No one their right mind believes Florida and/or Georgia are better than Oregon. Yes, the pollsters are crazy. That’s why they have ND ranked ahead of Alabama. It is a damn shame we are going to be forced to watch Alabama-ND in the BCS Championship Game. Both Sagarin and Massey have Alabama and Oregon at #s 1 and 2, respectively. Billy Bob Cyrus, you only had one cheesy country hit, but I think you hit the nail on the head with that comment, Murray will be ready, but being patient and controlled in the first half will be the key, turnovers will kill. Saban and Kirby will have some different looks on the defense guaranteed and will try to rattle him. I believe our defense can contain them enough to win, but our O line and Murray’s nerves are the key to the game.Sure would be nice to have Marlon and Michael out there too.If i’m Richt, I play all the backs in this game try to wear down that front , and have a few tricky plays and use that speedy freshman WR, their secondary can be beat down!

I agree with Mark. GA does seem to have a chance to beat BAMA as BAMA does not look unbeatable.

That said, Saban has experience in coaching big games and knowing Murray’s issues with top 10 teams, he may have something special for him (In 2010, Saban made sure Tebow does not hurt them like the previous year and they were successful)

Good luck. Bama wins by 3.

UGA didn’t play the top 3 teams in the West(Bama, LSU, and A&M), Bama didn’t play the top 3 teams in the East(UGA, S.C. and Florida). 2 of the top 3 teams in the East are ranked in top 5, only one of the top 3 teams in the West is ranked in top 5. UGA beat the #2 ranked team at the time they played in Florida, Bama beat the # 5 ranked team when they played them in LSU. Your rationale is totally stupid.

CPJ makes me sick and here is why: It’s always the player’s fault when they lose a game and never his. Either it’s lack of execution or effort or both. Also, from what I saw on the field Saturday with my own two eyes: Forget lack of talent, GT lacks size across the board. CPJ’s recruits belong at a service academy or the WAC. When you looked at FSU play Florida and Clemson play USCe, there is no discernible size/ speed difference. I have never seen a Tech team so physically inferior. CPJ cannot continue to think he can outsmart other teams. Sometimes you just have to line up and smack somebody in the mouth. The entire defense and the offensive line is pathetically small and looks like a well-dressed, well-funded, GA Southern team.

It will feature two sorry teams that are not as sorry as sorry as someone like Auburn. Tech specializes in Upsets of the Stomach kind. Which makes this a suitable bowl for a team on the road to nausea and vomiting. Why should the Jackets go to a bowl game when it’s fan won’t even drive up the road to Athens to see a disgusting end to a losing season. 6-6? Losing season after we give up 42+ to Florida State. Our defense stinks! Florida State is in the top ten in almost every defensive catagory. Look for a massive beat down of about 45 to 14.

I called a sports station in Birmingham this morning and announced to the Tide Nation that Georgia will roll all over them this Saturday. I guarenteed a Georgia victory of 27-10. Alabama will take a 10 – 7 lead at half, but Murray & Gurly will turn it up 2nd half. Georgia D will rise up in 3rd qtr.

Gerogia reminds me of the NY Giants last year. The Giants were so-so first part of year, then they got hot at playoff time. Football is just that…….all depends when you get hot. Georgia is on fire right now and even though Alabama is playing good ball, they are just not playing at the same level of intensity of Georgia right now.

Alabama is everybody’s pick and that just give Georgia fuel to go out and put the beatdown on Crimson Tide.

Georgia will no doubt explode on Notre Dame. That will not even be close. Georgia wins NC easily by at least 28 points.

I am a Kent State grad (Ph.D 1972) and always rooted for the Flashes, who haven’t had much of a team since the 70s (when Jack Lambert and NICK SABAN played there). Johnson wants to go to a bowl game for his hard headed self, not for the fans. With all the coach firing going on he should be hitting all those teams up for their recruits instead of going to a sorry, nobody cares, bowl game. The recruiting at Tech is more like what you would expect from a division II school. Johnson is a sorry excuse of a recruiter and it shows especially on the defensive side of this sub-par team.

Bama AND UGA played: Auburn, Missouri, Ole Miss & Tennessee in SEC games & Florida Atlantic OOC
Bama played Arkansas Georgia played Kentucky
Bama played Miss State Georgia played Vanderbilt
Bama played LSU Georgia played Florida
Bama played A&M Georgia played South Carolina

Bama played Michigan Georgia played tech
Bama played Western Kentucky Georgia played Georgia Southern
Bama played Western Carolina Georgia played Buffalo

I don’t see a lot of difference. Maybe you give Bama a nod for Michigan as opposed to tech, but that’s it.

The difference between sticking with Mark Richt vs Paul Johnson through the lean years? Recruiting and past success at the FBS level, plus the ‘potential’ for better days ahead. Mark Richt got slapped with a new reality when Saban, Meyer, Miles, and Petrino came into the SEC. The bar was raised, program philosophies became more professional, and he got caught with his pants down because he had the longest continuous tenure. The same shoe does not fit CPJ. He won with an already stacked cupboard. Now this cabinet contains his own hand picked ingredients and well,…. look at the players on the field Saturday and they look like they do not belong at this level.

First, I cannot understand why we feel we have to kick the other guy while he is down.

Second, good luck to the Dawgs. They deserve to be there and if they can win it, they will likely beat ND and be National Champs. They will be as worthy as anyone else, so good luck to them.

Third, Tech should stay home if they lose to FSU (which is almost guaranteed). I should think that it would be an embarrassment to go to a bowl with a losing record. This team and it’s “coaches” are a disgrace to the institute. Tech should clean house and start over.

Fourth, The Falcons deserve a lot of credit. They have not dominated, but they do win. It is not easy to win a road game and they have done a lot of that. Well done. I hope they go all the way. It will take luck, but they have a lot of good players and very good coaching. Hats off the Arthur for putting together a terrific bunch. Plenty of room for improvement, but they are darn good.

Why are the Kent Sts. of the world playing in BCS games?? I’m sorry but when you sign to play at Kent St. it tells everyone that forfeit your chance at playing for a major university and competing in big time bowls. Kudos for getting a scholarship, it’s a great accomplishment. That being said, putting a Kent St. in a BCS bowl game slaps the face of any top 10 team that played in a real conference against real competition every week. What’s worse, is that on a given Saturday Kent St. could beat anybody in the country. However, playing in the Big 10, Pac-12, Big 12, SEC, and ACC (ok, maybe not the ACC) they would be a 6-6 team.

Seriously?? I will be asked to watch Kent St play in a BCS bowl game?? I’ll be missing that one, no matter who they play.

For the cosch to state that his team did not put fortn much effort says something about the coach. I would not want to work for or serve under such a person. I thought you were smoking ganja when picked the Puppies to win the SEC and advance to the national championship — but here they are — right at the door step. Could they beat Bama? They could, I suppose, but it’s a long shot in my opinion. Remember, it took the best college quarter back to arrive on the scene since Tebow and Newton to beat the Tide, and he is arguably better than both of them – and like Newton he will have an NFL career and possibly a legendary NFL career. Again, Georgia could win, but they don’t have the explosive offensive fire power A & M has.

Some serious idiot posts going on like Buzz 333. Tech is routinely ranked in the Top 10 Universities in the nation and in some rankings the world. That is and always should be our strength and focus. Not football. I want to win as much as the next person. But never to the detriment of our academics. Call me naive but I still believe we can do both even as a top university and only 12k of students. We should put the right people in place to figure out how to make both happen – Academic and Administration. In the end, my degree has served me very well. That should never change based on the Win/Loss record of the football team.

Let the players vote secretly so there are reperrcussions from certain coaches against particular players.

SEC IMPLEMENTS BCS PLAYOFF-
The SEC championship game is a play in to the BCS title game. I think last years BCS title, featuring TWO SEC teams is what forced the BCS’ hand and made them create the four team playoff for 2014. But hey, we’ve got half of it right now. The #2 and #3 teams are playing in the SEC championship game to be in the BCS title game.

It would be the 7th consecutive National Championship for the SEC if they win. There has never been such conference dominance in NCAA football, has there?

No matter who wins the SEC title, Notre Dame will be facing as many future NFL players, in one game, as they’ve seen the whole season. With the long recovery time available for the SEC winner, it’s hard to see Notre Dame staying in the game until the end.

No matter who wins the SEC title, Notre Dame will be facing as many future NFL players, in one game, as they’ve seen the whole season.

So there aren’t many future NFL players at Stanford, Oklahoma, Miami, Michigan, Michigan St, and USC combined? That’s good to know.

If (huge if) GT beats FSU will the polls discount the Florida win over FSU? As it stands, Gators would likely get more poll credit for beating FSU than UGA got for beating GT.

When #2 plays #3 one team will lose (right? or did they concoct a system to address this?). Any leapfrog (by Florida or others) over the losing team in the polls is purely subjective.

At least five SEC teams would beat Notre Dame, most handily, and quite possibly seven or eight. I’ll believe this until I see evidence to the contrary.

Very disconcerting to project the Braves starting lineup based on who they have on the roster today. To complement their good pitching the Braves need to be strong defensively up the middle, and they need (1) a right-handed bat between Heyward and Freeman, (2) a center fielder who can play (i.e., not Schafer), and (3) a bench. Hard to envision this team not taking a huge step backwards in the standings in 2013.

Bama v. Michigan was game #1 if I recall. Would you agree that any team of note, Bama, dogs, A&M,
Buckeyes are a better team today than they were Week 1?

You lost big to USC. FL lost to USC. You beat FL. The dogs today are not the same dogs that lost to USC.

That’s why you play the game and “on any given Sunday” hold true.

Comes down to motivation, execution, turnovers, special teams and the bounce of the ball.

Bama is used to the stage. USC and the Cocktail Party are nice stages but do not compare to the SEC! SEC! and BCS stages.

First, to say that UGA is as talented as Alabama is an overstatement. UGA has only played 2 real teams all season, one beat themselves with 6 turnovers. The other, UGA couldn’t keep up, and only scored in the final minute of the game (after Spurrier put in his third string).

Second, Tech will never go far with a AA offense. They need to get rid of Paul Johnson and his Community College offense.

Third, I love the Falcons, but they are going to get a taste of what is to come in the post season when they play the Giants. I don’t believe they’ll play more than 1 game in the post season.

@Jorge O’leary Tech’s recruiting problem is Georgia State’s football team. Where before, Tech’s players could be enrolled at Georgia State and play for Tech, because NCAA rules, if your institution does not have a particular program, you can participate at another nearby institution. Tech’s academic requirements eliminate a good number of top recruits from attending.

Tech. has a great fan base in the AJC blogs. Just don’t count on them to be at any of the games in the stadium that GT plays in. They come on hot and heavy to put down UGA, it’s fans, coach and anything to do with UGA, and yet, they can’t beat them, whenever they play. For folks that are supposed to be so smart and academically superior to UGA students, you sure show your lack of class on these blogs.
It is not UGA’s fault you are running a high school offense, have no defense and a head coach that hasn’t got a clue, how to win the big games, much less recruit good players. Maybe the NCAA will grant you a waiver for the bowl season and you can go, once again to El Paso, and lose again. The only reason you win any games at all, is the fact that the vast majority of Div. I schools, don’t get to play against such a weird offense even once in a years time, unless they play Tech. or one of the service academies. Even then, without a defense, you can’t out score any major player, even in the ACC. Add in the fact that Notre Dame, will soon be in your conference, and you might as well rename the Orange Bowl, “The Irish Bowl”, because the ACC, will most likely be represented by Notre Dame each year as the representative of that bowl game.

There was a reason Florida turned the ball over 6 times. It was due to a relentless defense that Florida had no chance of slowing down. Driskel was under constant pressure which lead to some bad decisions. The Gators were getting racked play after play. Georgia’s defense dominated Florida. The Floria offense had no chance of getting in rhythm and their running game was inept against Georgia. Georgia took away their ability to run and Florida could not pass against Georgia. That is why they lost and why they turned the ball over.

Starting to Agree That UGA Should Drop Tech

November 27th, 2012
2:43 pm

A couple of things: 1. Tech fans should have known what CPJ was about. His GaSouthern and Navy teams never had good defenses. But he could get away with it because those schools never played anyone with good defenses, so the scores were always 52-45-type affairs. When he and Navy beat ND for the first time since WWII, it was ND’s wake-up call…they were horrible at that point. And then everyone said, “What if CPJ had big-time talent?” which was a legit question. Except he never has recruited any big-time talent. Your receivers drop passes. Your SR QB still makes many mistakes in reading the D and running the option. Your RBs have been decent, but not spectacular, and that offense can create some spectacular RB numbers. But they still don’t add up. This O can be stopped with good D players playing their assignments.

2. Stop with this UF “gave the game to UGA with 6 TOs” crap. UGA gave UF 3 first half Int’s and great field position, but the combination of UF’s horrible O and UGA’s suddenly stout D stymied UF every time. I was at the game, and you could feel it in the air… there was no way UF was winning that game. And let’s discuss their Offense. It has been pitiful all year. Yes they beat everyone but UGA, but it was their D that did it (until they played a hapless ACC team, FSU…oh wait, wasn’t FSU #1 in D and this horrible UF O destroyed them??). Anyway, UF’s O is bad, but their D is really, really good. But the tiebreaker rules are that head-to-head matchups break the tie, so UGA goes to the SECCG. The rules don’t say, “So and So SHOULD go based on ifs and buts.”

3. CPJ’s buyout this year is over $10million. And like $7.7M after next season. You Tech folk should have run your AD out on a rail rather than let him walk out to ClemPson. Your budget cannot afford to let him out for at least 2 years, so good luck with that.

Worst team in the BCS top 10? The winner is …. UGA. 1-1 vs. the only good teams they played, and the L was a total domination. And the W was 6 turnover aided.

The “experts” are starting to banter that Bama’s schedule is like UGA’s … only 2 good teams. Kinda, but then Bama has also played Michigan, a team that would beat everyone on UGA’s schedule not named SC or UF.

8-4 Miss St is to Bama what 8-4 Vandy is to UGA. The common opponents: UT, Mizzou, AU, and the mighy Owls of FL Atlantic

UGA won these by scores of 51-44, 41-20, 38-0, and 56-20.

Bama vs these same 4 “powers”: 44-13, 42-10, 49-0, and 40-7.

It’s tough to admit, as it would be for this GT fan if GT were in UGA’s position, but you can’t argue with the truth/facts……… BAMA has played a tougher, although not considerably tougher, schedule than UGA, and performed better in doing it. 9.3 pts for Bama’s D (#1) to 17.7 pts for UGA’s D (#16).

Oregon St, the Ranked team, and Top 10 ranked before losing @ UW, got drilled by the Ducks 48-24.

BTW, the other four teams (all 7-5) have been ranked this season as well. It’s – arguable – that the Pac 12 has the deepest league in the when you consider that all these team beat up on one another: UW, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Or St, Az, Az St.

UGA PLAYED TWO GOOD TEAMS IN THE REG SEASON. And they’re 1-1 in those games, getting their butts handed to them in one of those. Oregon lost IN OT to Stanford.

Patched Tire, the Pac-12 beats themselves up, just like the SEC, but they don’t get the respect they deserve, like the SEC does.

The entire Pac-12 had 11 out-of-conference losses, playing a considerably tougher out-of-conference schedule, compared to the SEC’s eight out-of-conference losses against a much weaker out-of-conference schedule. See here:

Pac-12 losses:

1) Notre Dame x2
2) Ohio State
3) LSU
4) Utah State
5) BYU
6) Nevada
7) Missouri
8) Colorado State
9) Fresno State
10) Sacramento State

(The last three all beat the putrid Colorado Buffaloes)

SEC losses:

1) Clemson
2) Texas
3) Rutgers
4) Northwestern
5) Louisville
6) Syracuse
7) Western Kentucky
8) La-Monroe

We can look at out-of-conference wins, if you like.

Honestly, I hope we don’t get a waiver. This is going to be a painful loss to FSU, and probably another bowl loss. I wish we could just lick our wounds at 6 – 6 and come back better next year. We need a real defensive coordinator, CPJ needs to develop a better passing game, and win at least 8 games next year. If not, then CPJ needs to go. I think his offense as is will work in FBS or weaker schools / conferences in BCS. We can beat half the teams in the ACC with it, but not the games we need to win the conference championship (teams like Clemson and FSU this year). Also we never will beat a decent team from the SEC, Big 10, Big 12 or Pac-12.

SEC = $$ to ESPN (who signed a mutli-billion $ TV deal with the league a couple years ago) and the BCS.

Comm Slive implores his league to avoid out-of-conf “trap games” that aren’t in-state rival games so the SEC “brand” can maintain its appearance of strength. 99% of people don’t look at the OOC opponent, just the score. Then they say, WOW, look at how strong the SEC is.

By scheduling cupcakes of the cupcake teams, thus assuring no OOC losses, it makes the SEC look better when the only games its teams lose are league games.

UGA is not better than UF, LSU, Oregon, Tex A&M or Stanford. Teams ALL ranked below UGA, but AHEAD of South Carolina (UGA’s daddy).

If you wonder why Rambo (not his real name for you uninformed. He changed it so he would be BAD) UGA footballers are quite often in the gray bar hotel, then take a look at how some of them, not all, they played Tech. What a bunch of thugs! They did every thing they could to hurt Tech backs: throw them to the ground and try to body slam, slapped one back’s helmet and then pointed his finger at him, etc. Tech may never beat UGA in football, but it really disgusted me to watch Tech playing against soon-to-be-on-the-street thugs after football is over. Congratulations Dawgs for having such a stellar representative of your scholarship. By the way, I represent one of the few who actually graduated from UGA.

ESPN & BCS are in bed together. ESPN is in bed with the SEC. The majority of NCAA $ is generated from the SEC.

Not real hard for these “suits” to get SEC team(s) in the BCS Championship game when these “suits” are the ones picking, er ranking, the teams to be played.

Case in point … it’s happening right in front of our eyes. UGA is NOT Championship caliber in 2012. There are too many teams ranked below them who have played tougher schedules, and/or outperformed the Dawgs. Again, just stating truth & facts.

Everyone was saying exactly the same crap when UGA won it’s last championship….in oddly enough, the Sugar Bowl vs……oddly enough Notre Dame. Not as tough a schedule as so-and-so. Could be three teams above them if not for the losses against heavier opponents, yada yada.

The BCS really hasn’t changed a darned thing has it? We still argue about the same old crap.

Notre Dame, UGA and BAMA are the only teams that matter right now and the game between UGA/BAMA should be one for the ages. I would say this is the first playoff game, but Notre Dame doesn’t have to play a Conf Championship (that’s ashamed). If they did, who would it be? Ga Tech?

SEC champ game tix are going for $300-$2500? Did I read that somewhere?

Why would someone be PROUD to pay those kinds of prices to watch a game you watch at a friend’s house or at a bar where your team’s fan club gathers? Did spending $500 to see the game in person make the outcome that much better?

Wouldn’t you rather pay $5.00 rather than $300, minimum?

This is what I’m talking about when I say the NCAA/BCS basically have SEC fans by the boils b/c you’ll feel “proud” after paying such outrageous prices for a ticket.
