Heat Check: Destiny’s Dogs? No-bowl Jackets? Whoa, Nelly

Surrounded by the enemy: Tech's band in Athens. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Surrounded by the enemy: The Georgia Tech band in Sanford Stadium. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Our Heat Check arrives just in time to warm what promises to be a chilly week. Face facts, folks: There’s not much happening in local sports.

Kidding.

GEORGIA: Will play for the BCS title — some guy I know predicted they would — with a victory over Alabama on Saturday. Barometric reading: Three weeks ago, people were saying the Bulldogs would have no chance against the mighty Tide. A lot of those same people seem to have changed their minds, and I’m not just talking about Georgia fans. I’m talking about neutrals who see the Dogs as no less talented as Bama. Just as Bacarri Rambo said.

GEORGIA TECH: Paul Johnson now believes his Jackets didn’t give much of an effort in Athens. (Who knew, huh?) But if Tech can rouse itself to topple Florida State — maybe the nation’s most overrated team — in Charlotte on Saturday, the Jackets will be headed for what Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports calls potentially the worst BCS bowl matchup ever: Tech against Kent State. Seriously. Barometric reading: Then again, if Tech loses to the Seminoles, it might not grace any bowl. Tech insiders insist they’ll land in a bowl even at 6-7, but there now appears no guarantee their request for a waiver would be favorably met

FALCONS: Everyone around the team was heartened by the one-point escape from Tampa Bay, for good reason. It was a big-time win over a tough opponent, and the Falcons haven’t beaten many tough opponents … well, all season. Barometric reading: They can clinch the NFC South with a month to spare by beating hated New Orleans on Thursday and then watching the Buccaneers lose at Denver on Sunday.

HAWKS: Remember when it was suggested this team was about to embark on a nice little run? This team has embarked on a nice little run. Having won five in a row, the Hawks hold the fourth-best record in the NBA East. Barometric reading: Check the schedule. They might not lose again anytime soon.

BRAVES: Waiting for B.J. Upton to decide where he wants to play. The good news is that Upton has long been hailed as one of the game’s biggest talents. Barometric reading: The sabermetric reality is that Upton was half the player Michael Bourn was in 2012. According to FanGraphs, Bourn’s WAR (wins above replacement) rating was 6.5; Upton’s was 3.3.

Somebody hand ARdawg one of Patched’s tissues.

Thin-skinned them Dawg fans are. Can’t handle the truth/facts I’m laying on them.

Here’s another “Ghirardelli brownie” just for you, ARdawg. Your Dawgs have played 6 good teams since the beginning of 2011 (Boise, SC, LSU, Mich St, SC, UF). They are 1-5 vs. those teams.

UGA is benefitting from the JOKE that the BCS is. I’m just stating facts/truths. Somebody’s gotta be ranked #3, so why not UGA. Really go and analyze all Top 10 teams, and their opponents, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Just like in politcs ……. THE media can fool “some of the people, ALL of the time”. I’m not “some of those people”.

GT fan change your moniker to SEC Hater…..that would be more accurate as you seem to insist on stating what the SEC is not vs. how good your team is (LMAO).

GT Fan: Please don’t try to show off your math skills on points allowed vs opponents in noncompetitive games, it’s just silly. Nobody cares whether the second stringers give up 7 or 14 when a games outcome is already decided..

The relevant math is 11/12 (UGA vs GT last 12 years or 91% wins) or 18/23 (UGA vs GT since 1990 or 78% wins). The only problem with this math would be the trend is definitely heading in the wrong direction for the nerds.

Im still waiting on a response as to how its politics and the SEC is overrated when they are 8-0 and have beaten The ACC; Pac 12; Big 10; Big 12 oh and the SEC in the BCS National Title game

Something other than tissues needed would be a better response

Sad to be a nerd and have to get your football wins vicariously through another school. That still never humbled you idiots. You still run your mouths like playground bullies. We destroyed your team and even took mercy on you by allowing you to score a TD on subs, lmaoff. Yet you still berate the Dawgs like they’re not good enough to shine your nerdy wingtips, lol. We took it easy on you, is that why you’re so upset? Because your team is the worst its ever been? You have no pride, because if you did, you would thank us for exposing you as the worst team Tech has fielded in years. Pitiful team, pitiful fans. You bring out the worst in our fans. We ridicule you because you are such poor sports. Some tech fans have class, but not many on this blog. Take your beating like a man. You wanted the game with us. You wanted the fight. So now that you lose, you can’t accept that fact. We are better than you at football and most everyone is better than you when it comes to showing class after a loss of epic proportions. Accept your loss at UGAs hands and move on and fix your team please…

The $ thing explained as well ………

SEC champ game tix are going for $300-$2500? Did I read that somewhere?

Why would someone be PROUD to pay those kinds of prices to watch a game you watch at a friend’s house or at a bar where your team’s fan club gathers? Did spending $500 to see the game in person make the outcome that much better?

Wouldn’t you rather pay $5.00 rather than $300, minimum?

This is what I’m talking about when I say the NCAA/BCS basically have SEC fans by the boils b/c you’ll feel “proud” after paying such outrageous prices for a ticket.

Save your $300-$500, buy a couple bottles of FINE whiskey, and invite some buds over to the man cave!

GT fan- I am just catching up here so I have not read all your posts.

I love facts and logic and consistently use them to help people like you to better understand things.

Fact- UGA is ranked #3 in the country
Fact- UGA is 1 of 3 teams who currently control their own destiny
Fact- If UGA beats Alabama (and yes that is a HUGE if) we will be playing for a National Championship (hence, we would be National Championship caliber)
Fact- The SEC has won 6 straight National Championships
Fact- This a football blog for an SEC football team who just whipped your team handily
Fact- You are grasping at straws and really have no argument

Those are all facts. So, what this looks like is that you just can’t handle the truth. The facts seem to make you upset.

Thats the best you have

You do realize people paid $3000 dollars to watch Tyson knock out Spinks in 90 seconds some 25 yrs ago

Super Bowl Tickets consistantly go for $1000 to $10000 every year

Just because only 345 fans are going the useless ACC championship game (which by the way has already been won by the SEC) doesnt make for a good argument

Now again please come up with something better and please wipe your nose :(

The idea that Ga Tech is playing for a championship and possibly going to a bowl, maybe a BCS bowl is just wrong. Kent State is about in there league but probably better. GT needs to mecifully end this season with a loss to F State and get on with the business of firing the coach and rebuilding yet another program. They have slipped a long way in resent years and I can’t believe alumni have not stormed the bastions yet demanding their dignity back.
