Heard often: Georgia’s path to the SEC championship game was facilitated by a schedule that didn’t include Western powers Alabama (No. 2 in the BCS standings), LSU (No. 7) and Texas A&M (No. 9).
Heard less often: Alabama’s path to the SEC championship game was facilitated by a schedule that didn’t include Eastern powers Georgia (No. 3), Florida (No. 4) and South Carolina (No. 10).
Heard often: Georgia’s biggest victory of the season was largely a function of six Florida turnovers.
Heard less often: Alabama’s biggest victory of the season was largely a function of four failed kicking ploys from the fertile mind of LSU’s Les Miles.
There’s a military acronym — RHIP. It stands for, “Rank has its privileges.” Ranking matters in college football, where two-thirds of the BCS standings consist of human polls, and privilege has tangible benefits. The benefit of being Alabama is that you never have to explain yourself. You’re Bama. ‘Nuff said.
On Nov. 5, 2011, second-ranked Alabama lost at home to No. 1 LSU. The Crimson Tide dropped one spot in the BCS standings. Two weeks later, Bama was back at No. 2, a position that enabled it to win the BCS title without taking its division or conference.
On Nov. 10, 2012, top-ranked Alabama lost at home to No. 15 Texas A&M. The Tide slid to No. 4, trailing three unbeaten teams. A week later, Bama was back at No. 2. Contrast this with Oregon, which was ranked No. 2 but lost at home to No. 13 Stanford. The Ducks dropped No. 5, behind three once-beaten teams. Mortals pay for losing. Alabama never falls far or stays down long. Alone among collegiate programs, it comes equipped with an aura.
But you know what? The halo fits. When you get as good as Alabama has gotten, you’ve earned the benefit of every doubt — not that there’s much cause for doubting. This is the premier program in the only conference that matters, and it keeps re-staking the claim.
Two years ago, its nemesis had the nerve to land Cam Newton and beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa after trailing 24-0 and won a national championship of its own, but where is Auburn today? Looking for a new coach. Where is Bama? Two games from a third BCS title in four seasons.
Even by Alabama’s lofty standards, its place in contemporary football is remarkable. It reigns over the sport in a way not seen since … Oklahoma under Bud Wilkinson? Notre Dame under Ara Parseghian? Bama itself under the Bear?
Alabama has been ranked No. 1 in each of the past five seasons, and in 2009 and 2011 it was No. 1 at the end. Bama moves inexorably from strength to strength. It has the ablest recruits, the wildest fans, the best coach.
About Nick Saban, all we need to know is this: He lost four first-round draftees to the NFL in April 2011 and won a national championship 8 1/2 months later. It was his third BCS title, and still he labors as if hellhounds were on his trail. Apologies to Urban Meyer, but Saban is the emperor of college football. Know how the NBA borrowed Jerry West’s silhouette for its logo? The BCS could do the same with Saban.
No, Alabama doesn’t win every championship, or even every game. It lost to A&M 2 1/2 weeks ago. It lost twice in a row to LSU, where once Saban worked. It lost to Utah in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2, 2009. Heck, it lost to Louisiana-Monroe in 2007. But that was near the end of Saban’s first season as coach, which ended with the Tide at 7-6. Alabama has since gone 59-7, which in this league in this era is outrageous.
Still, there are gradations within the greatness. If you look hard, you’ll note that the Tide’s defense is yielding 40 more yards a game this season than it did in 2011. (Now as then, Alabama leads the nation in total defense.) In eight quarters plus an overtime, the LSU of last season managed 331 yards and nine points against the Tide D; in four quarters last month, LSU as quarterbacked by the Georgia exile Zach Mettenberger managed 435 yards and 17 points.
If you’re Georgia, which has reached consecutive SEC title games without exactly swaying the electorate, those numbers offer hope for what looms as the Bulldogs’ most significant game since Herschel Walker split for the USFL. Any program in search of ultimate validation must get past Saban and his minions. The past five national titles have been taken either by Alabama or by a team that beat a Saban-coached Alabama.
Win Saturday and nobody will ever again ask these Bulldogs, “Yeah, but who did you beat?” Win Saturday and Georgia will have bettered Bama, and Bama is the best. ‘Nuff said.

I will say this about Saban, his teams are good all the time and don’t tend to get caught up in the highs and lows like most programs. Fortunately for Georgia, I think they’re hitting a high note at the right time. Hopefully, it’s enough. I know Rambo’s comments didn’t do them any favors.

It has to be Bama. Has to be. For UGA to get the national love it desires, it has to play and beat Bama. For Richt to show that his laid-back way is as good or equal to the “process”, he has to beat Saban. Alabama took our mojo on a late September night in 2008 with the whole country watching. This Saturday is a chance to get UGA back to where it was before that game kicked off.

Only two championship banners fly over Sanford Stadium, 1980 and 1942. In 1942 Georgia beat UCLA in the Rose Bowl 9-0, to end their season 11-1 and recognized as national champions in six different polls. That same season Ohio State was 9-1, did not play in a bowl game but was recognized in several of the myriad of other polls. Back in those days there were almost a dozen organizations that selected a champion at the end of season. Even as imperfect as the BCS has been since 1998, it sure beats a dozen different polls.

None of what you just said is fact, it’s just your on personal bias.
When South Carolina played Georgia they were at full strength, both Clowney and Lattimore were at their best. Lattimore is gone now and Clowney is at 50 to 75% because of an ankle problem. With very little depth South Carolina is still a great team but no where near as good as they were when Georgia played them.
You putting down the win at Florida disagrees with every poll out there They have beaten 5 top 15 programs and are ranked 4TH. Georgia got 17 points on a great defense.

Excellent column, Bradley, and chock-full-of statistics to buttress your claims. Keep writing stuff like this and I like your chances for the sports writers Hall of Fame.
BCS is a definite improvement over what we had before when the Big10 and PAC10 champs were locked into the Rose Bowl, for example. Although I thought it (college football) was more fun for fans before the BCS since typically a few teams could talk smack about their #1 claims as opposed to the one or two in the BCS era.
No one prepares a team better than Saban so Bama will be ready. I also think their loss to A&M actually took a lot of pressure off them, especially their QB, enabling all of them to play loose and with much more freedom.
Georgia had virtually this same scenario a year ago and had a legitimate chance to knock-off LSU but did not. I think the UGA defense is stronger this year and they have a much better running attack. This year, however, I think it all comes down to Aaron Murray. Unfortunately, I’m not convinced the kid can play well in a big game. For video evidence, see the South Carolina and Florida games.
So while my heart is with the Bulldogs, my head says to pick Bama by 6.

Nor can anyone say ’since Team A lost to Team B, but Team C beat Team B, them Team B will beat Team A”… well folks, it didnt happen that way, UGA (Team A) beat Florida (Team C) and it was UGA that caused Florida to turn the ball over, so there you have it. UGA sitting at 11-1, #3 in the BCS standings and set to play Alabama for teh SEC championship has nothing or no one to answer to except itself.

You are correct, Alabama has earned the benefit of the doubt and while all of their wins have been by impressive margins (save LSU), the A&M and LSU games do show Georgia has a good chance in this one. While A&M wasn’t a terrible loss, given the season they have had, this is the same A&M team that gave up 57 points and almost lost to La Tech. Amazing how similar the teams are in terms of schedule strength and overall record. I’d give a slight edge to Bama’s defens and a slight edge to Georgia’s offense. Coaching you’d have to go with Saban, but Richt has had some success against him.

The last two games that both teams played were gimmes. Neither one was tested at all so you can’t put any stock on that. To the guy that said Bama got beat by a freshman quarterback, that freshman quarterback probably won’t win the Heisman only because he is only a freshman. Even so, AL was down 20-0 the week after playing a very emotional game against a jacked up LSU and came back and almost pulled it out but didn’t because of an errant pass in the end. That’s no comparison to the beat down that SC put on GA. GA has a shot but has to play almost a perfect game in every phase. It may come down to turnovers and coaching and AL does a good job of protecting the ball and their coaching staff is better.

The privileges that come with rank are earned and they are built on discipline exhibited over decades.
That is the difference between Alabama and Georgia. Both have good players, but Bama players understand (well most of them) that national championships are built on responsibility and consistency. Saban refers to it as playing to a standard.
What is the Mark Richt standard?

On Nov. 5, 2011, second-ranked Alabama lost at home to No. 1 LSU. The Crimson Tide dropped one spot in the BCS standings. Two weeks later, Bama was back at No. 2, a position that enabled it to win the BCS title without taking its division or conference.
I remember how in 2007 you were writing/howling that UGA deserved the national championship shot vs. Ohio St., and not LSU, despite LSU winning the SEC Championship game vs. Tennessee (because they beat Georgia in the SEC East). Now you’re discounting Bama’s championship last year because they didn’t win their division? Whatever Mark.

Bama is no doubt the top program in the country the past 4-5 years, but the 2012 edition is not unbeatable. As stated in the article, they lost at home to A&M and easily could have lost to LSU if Miles would have used his head for something other than wearing that giant hat (still gotta love him). Since the game in Jax, UGA is playing as well as anyone in the country while Bama is showing the effects of losing 5 starters since the beginning of the year. If Murray plays well, then the Dawgs will be playing for the BCS trophy. I say the Dawgs find a way and will have a shot at being the 6th SEC team to bring home that coveted crystal football (UT, LSU, UF, UA and AU). Not too shabby of a conference over the past 14 years, is it?

This is pretty much how I see it also. UGA will have to play by far their best game of the season and Aaron Murray will have to play the best game of his collegiate career to have any chance in this game.

I know our defense can stop Bama’s offense. They are by no means high flying or explosive. Stop their running game and they will fall apart. McCarron isn’t the type of QB to throw it 30-35 times a game. I think our secondary will lock their receivers down and give Jarvis Jones enough time to get to McCarron. It’s gonna come down to our O-line’s ability to block Bama’s front. If they do, UGA wins.

Anybody that does not realize that UGA has a legit chance at beating BAMA is looking through rosé colored glasses….UGA has better linebackers and a better secondary. The D line is a push. Alabama has a better O line and I will give them the better QB also, just because AM has not played well in big games. The running backs are a push and I give the special teams to Alabama. UGA has better receivers….The coaching edge goes to Alabama…If UGA can make Ala one dementional on offense and stack the box, it will be a long night for Ala. If UGA can have a good mix of run/pass on O and not make special teams/penalties/turnovers a big issue they can easily win. To say UGA has NO CHANCE is just stupid….

It seems the Dawgs and Bama’s shortcomings this year
were contributed to not being able to contain a mobile
quarterback, USC and A & M.
Neither the Dawgs nor Bama have mobile quarterbacks,
thus I feel the Dawgs have an advantage with Jarvis
Jones and Ogletree.
Just need to slow down Bama’s running game, put pressure
on A. J. and I think things will work out.
A. J. has to be a little like Murray leading up to the USC game
thinking about Clowney; with A. J. not be able to sleep well
thinking about Jarvis. More pressure on A. J. than Murray leading
up to the big game.

Even as we blog our infinite wisdom, there are players and coaches looking for weaknesses in the other teams armor..and there are weaknesses with BOTH. For all the chest beating, our Dawgs have to play their very best to have a chance to beat the Tide. ALA is where they are for a reason, and that reason isn’t luck. It’s true they get the benefit of the doubt in ratings and officiating, but every traditional power does (see Ohio State, ND, etc). When you’re good, you get the benefits of being good. That said, they can be beaten. The only question is whether our players and staff have the will to do it. It will take more than talk by the players and fans or a strong desire to win. It will take, on the part of every player and coach, the sacrifice necessary to refuse to be beaten. I look forward to have the question answered on the field. Go Dawgs.

Heard less often: Georgia was humiliated and embarrassed 35-7 by one of only two ranked opponents, and it barely squeaked by the other, which had a beaten up line after running a gauntlet of Texas A&M, LSU and South Carolina, and after committing six turnovers–three of which were unforced–was still in a position to tie Georgia with two minutes to go.
Also heard less often: 98% of Georgia’s BCS rank is the accrual of Florida’s bruising schedule, and Georgia is only in this position because Florida beat South Carolina.
Alabama will boat-race Georgia because Saban will coach circles around Richt. Oh, and Murray will choke.

Kudos to everyone giving constructive commentary instead of blatant attacks on the teams. Both are great schools with great football programs, traditions, and expectations. Alabama may have better numbers on paper, but who knows what can happen any given Saturday? Both teams’ fans should be proud of their boys and enjoy the game with class this weekend. It’ll be a real Battle Royale and I for one am proud to call the SEC home.
Techies: quit the griping, focus on your own “gimme” game, and give thanks to Miami. And maybe try aiming your hatred at teams that are actually in your conference for a change–fueling the Georgia fire every year just makes you look petty and miserable. No one listens to the ravings of a 6-6 high school team, and UGA really doesn’t give a darn about the rivalry.

Donan, you must not be much of a college football fan. Your question demonstrates extreme ignorance of history and the popularity contest that has been the polls for the last almost 100 years. UGA claims two National Championships, Bama claims 14, Notre Dame claims ?. There is no National Champion of Division 1 football ever. That is what it is. You can claim whatever you want since it doesn’t really exist. There is now a BCS champion, still not a legit National Championship. UGA was designated by one of the polls to be number one in the nation five times so they could claim five but they choose to claim two. 1942 and 1980.

McCarron has the most pressure on him with the Heisman practically his if he had gone undefeated. He showed the pressure with his mistakes against A&M and LSU. Of course Murray’s reputation in big games is well known – did he turn the corner with his 2nd half play against Florida? Some think Florida has the best “D” in the country – maybe the most consistent any way. Ever since the Kentucky game UGA’s defense has at least been equal to any thing Florida or Bummer has shown. Personally I think LSU could have the best “D” as long as Less Miles doesn’t go in to prevent defense like he did against Bummer with 6 minutes left.

@George P Burdell: I’m a UGA alum and I can spell “their”. It’s hard to make a coherent argument about the intelligence of others when you don’t even spell check your own writing. (PS it’s spelled “Herschel”). Georgia may have a PhD program in geography, but it also offers one of the top journalism programs in the country and receives accolades for its business school. Why don’t you look a little closer at the majors list? I know it’s so much longer and varied than Tech’s, so I hope you can make it through.
Oh and it’s not the Harvard of the south. It was modeled after Yale, down to the old campus buildings and eventual bulldog mascot. It is arguably the oldest public university in the nation (UNC also likes to claim it). Not an important distinction to you, but worth mentioning.
Moral of the story: don’t make fun of others if you can’t make good arguments. And also, don’t pick fights where there are none. Tech is a good technical institute and UGA is a great university. Tech wins basketball, Georgia wins football. There, we’re even now. Sheesh.

“you go on and keep believing that we have the 69th ranked rushing defense.”
Well according to the facts you are 69th in the nation against the run. Just the facts sir.
“Our final two games were against triple option teams.”
So.
“The games were both over at halftime.”
Well of course. You were playing a double AA team in GSU and Tech has one of the worst defenses in the nation. Duh!
“Do you think the 2nd and 3rd string should be able to hold them down. Do you think the coaches cared how many yards Ga Southern or GT were getting?”
So those are your excuses? The 3rd teamers, the coaches don’t care, blah blah blah.
“Stats are for losers…let’s just see who shows up on Saturday. Dawgs win a close one by 3 pts.”
The only possible chance UGA has is if they play a perfect game with zero turnovers, no penalties, and hope that Alabama pulls a Florida and turns the ball over 6 times. If you think you can actually play toe to toe physical football with Bama for 60 minutes with turnovers and penalties cancelling out then you are fit for the insane asylum.

These stats are misleading! there are two Georgia teams, the one before the Florida’s game and the one after. the one before Florida’s game has no chance in beating Bama! yes sir! Bama will run all over them. but the team after the Florida’s game is possessed and in a mission!! I
I honestly think Georgia and Bama D are very close with a little edge for Georgia, the Offenses are close depending on which Murray will show up and also for Bama to lose their top WR this week is not a good sign. BAma has advantage of experience and coaching staff. The loss to south carolina is probably the best thing that happened to Georgia. Go Dawgs

This game should be awful fun to watch. I’m proud we are there and as has been said, to be the best you have to beat the best.
We have to get Murray out of the pocket and he is going to have to run for some 1st downs and live to see another play. Staying in the pocket all day will not work nor will running up the middle. We have to run enough to keep them honest but the 24 points we have to score to win will need to come from Murray or a turnover by McCarron, which are few.
Win or lose, I’ll be here. No injuries to both sides and no refs screwing things up. Let the kids decide it on the field

Not entirely alone. Notre Dame started the season unranked, but rocketed up the rankings with each win. There’s no doubt the ND aura had a lot to do with that. But I would say that Alabama and Notre Dame are in their own aura class, with USC, Michigan, Oklahoma and Texas closely behind.

The OL for UGA has got to do enough to get Murray some time. Our WR and Te are very underrated and Bama has given up yards thorugh the air. Murray CANNOT stay in the pocket though. That is the key to the game. Murray must get on the edge outside of contain and run a little.

Happened against LSU as well last year in the dome. That is my big worry. That and Murray loosing his head in the big game and throwing INT’s like mardigraw beads from a parade float. If you throw the ball across your body over the middle to a covered receiver that is a QB mistake. Not an amazing defensive play. He also completely flubbed a pass in the 3rd quarter that wasn’t within 20 yards of a Florida receiver. I guess that was another UGA “forced” turnover.

“To be the man, you gotta beat the man!” sums it up. Georgia has done well under Richt, consistently winning and always talented but Bama has been dominant under Saban. I believe the talent on the teams is very close year in and year out. The difference is that the kids going to Bama know they are there to play football and that there is no safety net whereas at Georgia, if a kid goes soft or gets in trouble he will always get another chance. If you are of the mind that stuff like “developing young men” matters, Richt is your man. If above all your focus is winning, Saban is. Georgia is not Bama and never will be because the base doesn’t support a win at any cost approach. That’s not a knock on Bama and as a Georgia fan it’s fine with me. I think we have something for them this year, we’ll see. But regardless, Bama will be back in the hunt for the NC right away and Georgia will begin waiting on the stars to line up again.

For better or worse, this game will boil down to how well Aaron Murray handles the pressure that Bama is going to bring. I can understand why he does not want to talk to the media this week because this game is going to define his career at UGA. If he can take the heat and hit some open receivers then UGA has an excellent chance to win. However, if he reverts to anything like his performance against South Carolina or the first half against Florida, then this game could be over at halftime.

So, by the definition of UGA fans, no QB has ever made a poor decision and thrown a bad interception. Every interception ever thrown was because the defense was just unstoppable on that particular play. Is that about right?

MB, that’s a very good column. There are more nuances to this game than msot bloggers here pick up on. Bama has the experience of being there for the big ones — and winning hem. GA doesn’t, but a win Saturday could change that, as you said. Once we get away from the homers shouting their team will wipe the other away, I suspect we’re looking at a good college game, maybe even better. I’d like very much to see Dawgs win.
As for Notre Dame — not that anyone’s thinking about it now — some have suggested the Irish would flop in the SEC. That’s ridiculous. Maybe if their schedule included the three powers in the East and the three in the West. But nobody’s schedule shapes up that way, and ND has a very good team. I’m guessing they’d have two losses if they were in the SEC this year, depending on the schedule. maybe

Bobby, the defense doesn’t have to be unstoppable to force a turnover. A lot of the time it’s a matter of the defense rushing the QB’s decision. Murray will be the first to tell you he has rushed many a throw which have resulted in INT’s, but the defensive pressure many times causes the poor mechanics.

ERIC C. – good observation…. If ND had lost on Saturday night, the Crocs are right there in the NC waiting for either team… UF just missed out like we did a few times in the early 2000’s….. Bama got the roll of the dice last year and made it into the NC game just like the Crocs did against FSU a few years ago… That’s why i’m proud of our SEC Chmpships under Richt because we could control the outcome with good play.

Why are you shocked? He’s the same guy that 2 years ago said that you should have to win your conference to play for the BCS. Then last year, he said the BCS was designed to match the 2 best teams (since Bama did not win the West). Now he complains that the loser of the SECCG should get the Sugar Bowl invite over UF. Shocked? Not me. He has a different argument every year, based on what would be best for his team. Great coach, but maybe an even better politician. He’s your classic flip-flopper.

As Lex said earlier today. Murray must roll out some out of the spread with 5 wideouts runnning 20 yards or so down the field, and he see’s a lane for a 10-15 yard gain, HE MUST TAKE IT to keep Bama from loading up on us. Spread them out, take their Corners and safeties and let Murray give them something to think about. Gurley off tackle will not be very successful

“Donnan of a New Era”
According to my 2012 Georiga Football media guide, UGA claims two (2) National Championships. On page 190 of the guide it states, “. . . five bulldog teams have actually been declared National Champions at season’s end by at least one of the national polls recognized by the National College Football Hall of Fame and included in the official NCAA Football Record Book.” However, UGA recognizes only two of those, 1980 and 1942. Those teams were consensus selections being chosen by at least half of the recognized polls. The Associated Press poll which is the one commonly used (but is not official) to declare the National Champion listed Georgia as first in 1980 but second in 1942. Most of the other polls in 1942 listed Georgia as first after winning the Rose Bowl over UCLA. The second place ranking in 1942 by the AP while most others listed Georgia as first has caused the confusion about the 1942 championship.

Sure are a lot of Bama bloggers on here guaranteeing a win. Wouldnt count your chicks before they hatch. UGA is playing well at the right time and if we play to our potential we have a very good chance of upsetting Bama. Notice I said upsetting as in Bama is the clear favorite. Murray needs to use his legs to pick up critical 3rd down conversions when his receiver isn’t open. He did this a lot more 2 & 3 years ago before the coaches shut it down with the fear of injury. Leave everything on the field Saturday and become an elite team by beating an elite team. GO DAWGS!!

Consensus National Champions
1980 (12-0-0) – Vince Dooley coached the Bulldogs to a perfect 12-0 season, including a 17-10 victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to win the National Championship. Georgia finished as the only team with no losses and no ties and was declared No. 1 by almost every poll.
1942 (11-1-0) – Berryman; DeVold; Houlgate System; Litkenhous; Poling System; Williamson System.

1942 – 11–1 Georgia was chosen as champion by at least half of the recognized polls. Georgia was led by All-Americans Frank Sinkwich and end George Poschner, along with a young back named Charley Trippi. The Bulldogs knocked off 9 consecutive opponents and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Georgia earned a Rose Bowl bid after it blanked Georgia Tech 34–0 in Athens to end the regular season. Georgia then edged UCLA 9–0 in the Rose Bowl
1980 – The Bulldogs beat Notre Dame 17–10 in the Sugar Bowl to finish 12–0 and claim the National Championship. Notable contributors during the season included Herschel Walker, Buck Belue and Lindsay Scott (Georgia was listed first by AP, Berryman, FACT, FB News, FW, Helms, National Championship Foundation, NFF, Poling, Sporting News & UPI).
Other years in which the Bulldogs finished with a #1 ranking in at least one of the final national polls and included in the official NCAA Football Record Book:[11][31]
1927 – With a 9–1–0 record, the Bulldogs were called the “dream and wonder team” and were ranked No. 1 in the nation with one regular season game remaining, but were upset by Georgia Tech by a score of 12–0 at Grant Field in Atlanta, Georgia.[32] Nevertheless, at the end of the season, Georgia was ranked number 1 in two polls recognized by the NCAA.[33] The Bulldogs were also listed as number 1 in two other polls of the 1927 season, but most recognize Illinois as the 1927 National Champion.[34]
See also: 1927 Georgia Bulldogs football team
1946 – Georgia went 11–0 and beat North Carolina 20–10 and was proclaimed national champions by one poll recognized by the NCAA.
1968 – Georgia was chosen by one national poll when they went 9–1–2 losing to Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. Overtime was not allowed in the NCAA yet so Georgia tied with Tennessee and Houston.

Bama will take this going away. And you all know deep down that’s what’s going to happen. Give me one reason why it will be different. Murray has only beaten one team ranked in his career. Um… isn’t Georgia like 0-2 in that dome in the last two years? With big blow out losses? Playing at home doesn’t seem to help Georgia whether they’re playing a team with the 70th best recruiting class or nearly the best. To win, our defense is going to have to set the tone early. Jarvis Jones and company are going to have to put McCarron on his back early and often the whole game. We can not give him all day to pass like he does every other game. Second, the d-line, linebackers and the rest are going to have to hit and tackle Lacey and Yeldon harder than they have ever been. Third, the Corners and Safetys can’t let Cooper run past them or even catch the ball. Take these four players out of the equation and Georgia will win the SEC Championship.
If our o-line keeps creating the holes they have been to establish the run game, then I think Murrary can pass all over them. Their secondary appears to be their weak length.
No matter how much Saban studies his playbook and gameplan and goes into toddler tantrums with his boys in bubbalussa, he will never be as much of a class act as Georgia’s coach Mark Richt.

I’m curious over the last two years what that result is? … I hate to do all the legwork… but thanks to wikipedia… I’ll do it.
UGA last 2 years against 6 ranked opponents: Boise, South Carolina, LSU, MSU, USC and Florida… outscored 171 to 155.
Alabama… 10 ranked opponents and outscored them 254 to 111. And that’s not an Oregon team, it’s a running game.
Look at that average, UGA gives up nearly 30 points a game, 28.5. Alabama only gives up 11.1 against ranked opponents. I think UGA will get smothered on offense and their inability to stop the run will kill them and that’s all Alabama want’s to do is run. And I don’t think Georgia will be able to stop them even when they know it’s coming.
Alabama big. Maybe not as big as our beat down last year but probably mid 30s and UGA might not score. Or Saban will destroy his players between the SECCG and the time they kick off in the BCS National Championship game.

I think people are calling on recent history, like this year, last year, year before. In that time Alabama has been phenomenal, UGA has been lousy but benefited from Florida and Tennessee sucking so bad and South Carolina playing a tougher schedule then they had to. South Carolina was ranked higher in the BCS last year than Georgia. They were the best team in the East.
Going on recent history, like this year alone, this game isn’t close. Not when UGA struggles to beat Tennessee and Kentucky and gets demolished by South Carolina. Sure you beat Florida, but Florida is horribly over ranked and needed massive bad play from FSU to win and still almost beat UGA.
They and Georgia are benefiting from the work of the SEC Western schools that have produced most of the SEC National Championships. And we just added A&M.

-This is the kind of talk that the Dawgs can not listen to this week….they can NOT be intimadated by the Ala. “aura”….If they go into the game with that mindset they WILL lose….They have to believe they can win( and they CAN) and plan on going in there to smack the other team in the mouth…
-Also,they must be prepared for some adversity….Ala WILL score and they MAY be ahead of the Dawgs early on,but the Dawgs MUST believe they can play with these guys, relax, and play their game….

Elimate their strength and ability to score. Pound (MLYC) McCarron Lacy, Yeldon, Cooper from start to finish. Our defense is going to have to look at ourselves like an offense knocking them backwards towards the opposite endzone. Because their o-line trys to steamroll opponents down the field, our defense will have to be much more physical and streamroll them back the opposite direction. We did it for the 1st half in last years SEC championship. We will have to do it for 4 quarters this year. Get ready and leave it all on the field. Go Dawgs!

LSU fan rooting for Bama? Whatever dude, it’s a free country. UGA does best when they are perceived to be the underdog, so Mr. LSU’s comments can only inspire our Junkyard Dawgs. Mr. Rambo’s comments are the one’s that give me pause. The uncertainty of it all is part of being a UGA fan. Back in the Dooley days, you just knew if the Dawgs were within a touchdown in the 4th quarter, they had a chance against anybody. If they needed a turnover, the ball found it’s way into our hands more often than not at the bottom of a pile. Lately the anticipation of winning has been replaced by the fear of choking, at least from a fan’s perspective. This team just needs to stay motivated, disciplined and hungry. We should be the underdogs vs Bama considering their body of work, no argument there and much respect for the Bama fans who are as passionate as we are, but I like our chances! Mark,
As you mentioned, I have heard over and over again that UGA beat a Florida team that had a terrible game and turned the ball over six times. People seem to love to discredit the quality of this win. My question for you is why hasn’t anyone mentioned the fact that UGA CAUSED 4/6 Florida turnovers? Florida didn’t just turn the ball over for fun (that role was played by Aaron Murray). Jarvis jones and the rest of the defense tormented Florida’s QB and FORCED Florida to turn the ball over. Their QB was constantly on his back, under pressure, getting hit, getting the ball stripped. Why is it that members of the media and fans of other teams fail to point out that Florida was forced to play bad by a relentless Georgia defense. Florida was physically beaten on both sides off the ball (Todd gurley physically ran over the Florida defense in route to a 100 yard performance, the defense physically defeated the Florida offense). Anyone who watched the game knows this to be true. So why is nobody bringing this to light when the Dawgs victory over Florida is being written off as Florida beating themselves? Let’s face it, Georgia beat Florida.

It is more like a strange religious cult that wears crimson and houndstooth clothing 365 days a year with flags hanging from cars just as often. Since there are no Pro teams in the state, it is like the equivalent of a minor league football team that just happens to be associated with a university. It’s kind of like a much larger scale highschool football atmoshphere. It seems much different and odd compared to the other SEC school atmospheres at UGA, Florida, LSU and others. Their team and fans don’t not seem as layed back, fun, and down to earth as UGA’s and others that are in the SEC.
They need to take notes this weekend in Georgia on what its like to be a part of a state and a great University with a Head Coach that is much bigger and prouder than just winning college football games. Go Dawgs!

Wonder why espn and the rest of the media talk up everbody else but Georgia. It doesn’t matter if UGA was 12-0 and ranked # 1 in the country right now. They would be talking up somebody else.
Its actually been kind of humorous each week when we move up in the rankings how they talk about everybody who lost or could have a long shot chance at a bowl game. Even our own David Pollack has sold out to the ones signing his paycheck. He won’t even speak up for his team and Alma Mater. It’s pathetic. It’s because they are all pulling for the largest markets that will pull in the highest viewership and ratings and generate the most mula. That’s the main reason Texas A&M and Missouri were brought into the SEC. Those are huge TV markets that generate a lot more revenue. UGA is going to have earn it’s publicity the old fashion way. They are going to have to win two more football games. No one will be able to ignore them after this is accomplished.

I pull for UGA and Coach Richt to win except when they play GT. I do so because I respect the University and what it means to the State of Georgia. I also find it very amusing to read the comments of UGA fans on the UGA blogs. Some are very well said and supportive of the program as they should be. However, I do not understand why some UGA fans are so fickle. It seems to me like they expect the team to win every game they play which will not happen. I am pulling for them to beat Alabama and I believe they will if they play up to their capability. If they do happen to lose, I hope some of their fans will not go back to the same old ways of throwing CMR and the team down like they did after the SC loss.

DONNAN OF A NEW ERA
The University of Georgia and most of us Dawg fans only recognize 2 Mythical National Championships 1942 when they split the MNC with Ohio State and of course 1980 when they were consensus National Champions, Georgia was voted number #1 in at least 1 poll in 3 other seasons 1927, 1946* (only undefeated/untied team) and 1968 though and that is where some fans get the 5 MNCs from. Just like Tech who claims 6 MNCs but when you examine more closely they in fact were named # 1 in at least 1 poll 6 times with 2 of those being Unanimous MNCs and 1 Consensus MNC, 1 Split MNC (1991) and then 2 in the same category as Georgia’s other 3. Until these things are decided on the field in a playoff as the other divisions of College football do it is highly subjective in some years and can be argued as to who was the best team for that year i.e. Auburn 2004, Georgia 1946, 2007 etc. Anyways it keeps us fans interested and talking back and forth about who was better.

Funny you didn’t mention Alabama was on Georgia’s schedule last year until UGA “volunteered” (Thanksgiving 2011) to play Mizzou instead and drop Alabama. Georgia was “kind” enough to even avoid Texas A&M to play a weaker (over inflated) MIzzou. That was alll done to avoid a reg season battle with a team (a National Championship Team) that at the very least, takes some of the wind out of you during the season….much moreso than Ga. Southern or MIzzou.

Alabama has come a long ways since they threw the brick into Curry’s office when he was coach there. If Nick Saban had failed with the money he took to come there they would have hung him rightfully so on the courthouse steps. Saban has been one of the very few who showed up for the money and produced. The man has guts. As for Richt until he wins this kind of game he is the leader in the clubhouse of a second rate division. Richt’s defining moment is Saturday, Saban has had his already.

Someone told me this story a while back, supposedly true, it is said that when Saban came to coach Alabama, he was asked to do a promotion for Dr. Pepper that would include a large cardboard cut-out of Saban, Houston Nutt, (then at Arky), and Tubberville from Auburn, to be used as displays at grocery stores. Saban would agree to do it only if he were made to look as tall as the other two coaches on the display. Now that’s funny, I don’t care who you are!

UGA lost to SC because they weren’t focused. Both sides of the ball played like they were in a daze. It was a wake-up call for UGA. They realized that you cannot just walk through a game in this league no matter how talented you are. Since then they have come together as a force to be reckoned with. Alabama had the same experience against A&M just not as bad. They know they can be beat so they will prepare for the coming battle with everything they have.

SEC IMPLEMENTS BCS PLAYOFF-
The SEC championship game is a play in to the BCS title game. I think last years BCS title, featuring TWO SEC teams is what forced the BCS’ hand and made them create the four team playoff for 2014. But hey, we’ve got half of it right now. The #2 and #3 teams are playing in the SEC championship game to be in the BCS title game.
It would be the 7th consecutive National Championship for the SEC if they win. There has never been such conference dominance in NCAA football, has there?
No matter who wins the SEC title, Notre Dame will be facing as many future NFL players, in one game, as they’ve seen the whole season. With the long recovery time available for the SEC winner, it’s hard to see Notre Dame staying in the game until the end.

I keep thinking way back to 1976 when Ga hosted Ala…both teams were ranked in the top 10. Ala still held that aura and was coached by the great Bear. Ga’s D left it all on the field that day…shutting out Alabama 21-0. They played there best D all season on that day. So much so that the very next game…Ga lost to a much inferior Ole Miss team. They were simply drained.
Folks….I see a similarity in this same game. I see Ga coming out and playing the best D they have all year. It will also represent the best D Alabama will have faced all year. Yes…better than Tex A@M. Just look at the personnel and talent on this Ga D. If these boys decide to really play….it’s going to be 1976 all over again. Too many nfl calliber athletes on this Ga D. It’s a simple case of mind over matter.

The original point of the article was about the psychological aspect of facing Bama. A&M beat Bama because they didn’t buy into the Bama mystique. They beat Bama psychologically. The Dawgs did the same to the Gators. We came out and popped them in the mouth and kept on punching. They were flustered and committed uncharacteristic errors because it wasn’t what they were expecting.
Winning this game is almost as much about psy ops as it about talent and execution. The Dawgs must not succumb to the Bama mystique. They are vulnerable. LSU proved it and A&M capitalized on it. Miles “hattered” himself and his team. They should have won. They dominated that game. But he outsmarted himself and they lost when they should have won going away.
The Dawgs need to come out punching and keep on punching.
Anybody remember “A Christmas Story” and what happened to the bully? Ralphie charged him and bloodied his nose and once he proved mortal, Ralphie went postal on him. The kid was twice his size. Bama is the bully and the Dawgs need to bloddy their nose and keep on punching. They won’t know how to handle that. Psy Ops folks… Psy Ops.

That “much inferior Ole Miss team” had beaten Alabama before Bama even played Georgia that year. It was a down year for Bama — they had three losses in 76.

Auras and mystique…
Those are simply the side effects of being consistently talented and executing at a high level. The BCSCG won’t be won in anyones “head”. It will be won or lost in the trenches.
Better be ready for 60 minutes of slobber-knocking…

Right. The dwags will be slobbering while Bama does the knocking.
Make it Bama by four TDs.

First of all this is ALOT better & hungry team of Dawgs of the past !! It’s defense is loaded with good “if not GREAT ” players. The turnovers against Fla was forced by this defense ! Yea we lost to the Cocks “no. 7 ” team but we beat the no. 2 team when they where on a roll. Great teams can over come mistakes as we did against the Gators. It will take alot more than Bama just lining up & running the ball to beat these Dawgs. We have just as good a running game as they have BUT our passing game is off the chain as they say these days !! Bama can’t stop both PERIOD Yea Bama will have they plays in both also !! But I agree with our players Our defense has ALOT to prove & they WILL prove it !! That’s what all this talk is about !! Proving that our defense is just as good or BETTER than their’s !! LET THE BIG DAWG EAT

Saban never repeats as National Champ.
It’s a rare feat that happens once every 35 years, 3% chance.
Odds are with Richt.

[...] Nick Saban has coached only five games against Georgia (winning three), but two rank as watersheds. College ball does not work like a well engineered machine. Any team can lose or win on any given day. There are only statistical probabilities that we can ever talk about if we’re going to really be objective about the game. Some teams have more consistently enjoyed superior coaching and recruiting at times and that allowed them to gain the statistical advantages during those times. Bama has had a good history of the statistics being in their favor. This however does not mean they cannot be beat. Whoever beats them gets to say they won on that day. This says nothing of the next day, week or year. Same goes for Bama. Some teams win games due to outplaying the other team and some win due to the other team not playing up to their potential. It’s college ball, theae are young men who are prone to error sometimes. Keeping this in my mind keeps me from becoming a fanatic and allows me to ulcers and strokes. May the best team on that day win.
